DON’T BE CAUGHT IN THE DARK WITHOUT A PLAN!

ON MONDAY, AUG. 21 the moon will pass between the

Earth and the sun. A total eclipse can best be appreciated by those who are standing in the “Path of Totality.” From this vantage point, the moon will fully cover the sun, and the closer you are standing in the very center of this miles-wide path, the longer the eclipse will last. This is the first eclipse to cross through the continental United States since 1979.

Never look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse (total or otherwise) without eye protection.

Oregon’s Mid-Willamette Valley sits in the middle of the Path of Totality. The innermost part of the shadow (the umbra) will strike through the Santiam Canyon where it will sustain for two minutes or more. The eclipse will still be seen further south in Sweet Home and Brownsville along the southern-most edge of the path, but will only be viewable for a minute or less.

OF TStayton OTALISublimity TMehama Y Gates

According to NASA, you can use aluminized mylar filters or Les (Ladislav) Palenik © 123r f.com. #14 welding glass as inexpensive filters to view the sun. Alternatively, you can use a pin-hole projection on a screen to see the effects of the eclipse. There are, of course, various professional grade optical instruments and viewers to enjoy this rare event right here in Oregon. For more useful tips and information, go to eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety.

SHIMANEK BRIDGE

Linn County’s newest and longest covered span features red paint, portal design and louvered windows, all similar to the former span which was built in 1927. The first bridge here is believed to have been constructed in 1861. The covered bridge was built in 1891. In 1904, the county rebuilt the bridge, but it washed out in 1921. The replacement lasted until 1927, when high water damaged the piers and it was replaced again. In 1966 the current bridge was completed.

HOFFMAN BRIDGE

Built primarily with hand tools, the upper timbers show adze marks where workers shaped them by hand. The bridge is painted white and has two Gothic windows on each side.

Built in 1932, the bridge features a narrow slit window on both sides of the structure. Originally the portals were rounded, but were entlarged to allow larger loads. In 1963, the bridge was bypassed and20 the state relinquished control to Linn County. In the flood of 1996, the bridge sustained severe damage. An Oregon Covered Bridge Program grant paid for repair.

SHELBURN

Weddle is a typical example of Linn County’s open-sided covered bridges. It was bypassed in 1980 by a concrete bridge downstream and neglected. It eventually became a safety issue, and was scheduled to be demolished but local covered bridge enthusiasts with the help of State Senator Mae Yih saved it. It became the bridge to receive the Oregon Covered Bridge Program grant. In 1989, the Cascade Forest Resource Center was formed to rebuild the Weddle Bridge across Ames Creek in Sankey Park. The historic bridge is now the site for many events.

HANNAH BRIDGE

Thomas Creek, named for Frederick Thomas who obtained a donation land claim on the banks of the stream in 1846, has five covered bridges in Linn County, with the Hannah being the newest. It is the characteristic Linn County covered bridge design, which includes segmental arches, exposed beams at the gable ends, and board-and-batten cladding. It was built primarily with hand tools.

During the mid-1850s pioneers used hand tools and determination to build covered bridges in Oregon. According to the Oregon Covered Bridge Society, by the early 20th century the state provided standard bridge designs, most incorporating the Howe truss. The abundance of Douglas Fir and the shortage of steel during the world wars continued construction of covered spans well into the 1950s. Wooden bridges were covered to keep the truss timbers dry. A covered bridge could last 80 years or more, while an uncovered span would deteriorate in a decade. For more information see www.covered-bridges.org.

Shaff Rd S

Built to highway commission specifications, the Larwood is a standard 105-foot length, with partially exposed trusses, white-washed interior and rounded portals. The span is located three miles north of Lacomb, next to Larwood Wayside Park, a favorite with fishermen and swimmers.

STAYTON-JORDAN BRIDGE

Prior to 1986, the Jordan Bridge spanned Thomas Creek in Linn County several miles east of Scio. When the county announced the bridge was to be replaced, Stayton residents asked to take title to the structure. A covered bridge preservation company was formed, enlisting volunteers and Marine Corps reservists for the 6th Engineering Battalion in Salem. The span was rebuilt over the Salem Power Canal and dedicated in June 1988. In 1994, however, Christmas lights ignited and the bridge was destroyed. Citizens constructed a new bridge, dedicated in September 1998.

SHORT BRIDGE

This is the sole survivor of the covered bridges which crossed the South Fork of the Santiam River. It is one of the few remaining in the county to have a wooden shingle roof. When built, the bridge was commonly known as the Whiskey Butte Bridge.

Mid-Willamette Valley Guide

Brownsville, one of Oregon’s early settlements, had its beginnings in 1846, when a group of families came west on the Oregon Trail and claimed land in the lush valley of the Calapooia River. Soon there was a ferry, a store and by 1858, the communities of North Brownsville and Amelia. A dam was built to supply water power for industry which eventually included a grist mill, woolen mill, sawmill, furniture factory and tannery. The railroad came to town in 1880. By 1884 North Brownsville was a bustling manufacturing and trade center serving a population of 300. In 1895, the north and south sides of the river consolidated as the City of Brownsville. The city celebrates its history. It is home to the Linn County Historical Museum, Historic Moyer House Museum, Pioneer Picture Gallery, Living Rock Studios, Carriage Me Back Historical Drama weekend, annual Pioneer Picnic and August’s Antique Faire. It was also the location for the film Stand By Me, and July 23 is celebrated as Stand By Me Day. Brownsville Chamber of Commerce has more information: historicbrownsville.com or 541-928-0831.

FOSTER & GREEN PETER RESERVOIRS There are many water and woodland activities at these beautiful sites. Foster Reservoir has good bank access at several rest stops and campgrounds, and three seasonal boat ramps and features trout, bass, perch and catfish. Boat angling is best April 1 to mid June. Bank angling is popular near the dam at the Army Corps of Engineers park and at flat areas along the south side of the reservoir. The forested setting of Green Peter Reservoir in Whitcomb Creek County Park provides spectacular mountain views, bird-watching, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping and water skiing. Jet skis, speed boats and fishing boats welcome. It is a premier kokanee fishery and also supports stocked rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. linnparks.com
