During the mid-1850s pioneers used hand tools and determination to build covered bridges in Oregon. According to the Oregon Covered Bridge Society, by the early 20th century the state provided standard bridge designs, most incorporating the Howe truss.

Shimanek Bridge is Linn County’s newest and longest covered span and features red paint, portal design and louvered windows, all similar to the former span which was built in 1927. The previous covered bridge was built in 1891. In 1904, the county rebuilt the bridge, but it washed out in 1921. The replacement lasted until 1927, when high water damaged the piers and it was replaced again. In 1966 the current bridge was completed.

Wooden bridges were covered to keep the truss timbers dry. A covered bridge could last 80 years or more, while an uncovered span would deteriorate in a decade.

HISTORIC BROWNSVILLE Brownsville, one of Oregon’s early settlements, had its beginnings in 1846, when a group of families came west on the Oregon Trail and claimed land in the lush valley of the Calapooia River. Soon there was a ferry, a store and by 1858, the communities of North Brownsville and Amelia. A dam was built to supply water power for industry which eventually included a grist mill, woolen mill, sawmill, furniture factory and tannery. The railroad came to town in 1880. By 1884 North Brownsville was a bustling manufacturing and trade center serving a population of 300. In 1895, the north and south sides of the river consolidated as the City of Brownsville. The city celebrates its history. It is home to the Linn County Historical Museum, Historic Moyer House Museum, Pioneer Picture Gallery, Living Rock Studios, Carriage Me Back Historical Drama weekend, annual Pioneer Picnic and August’s Antique Faire. It was also the location for “Castle Rock” in the 1986 film Stand By Me, and July 23 is celebrated as Stand By Me Day. Brownsville Chamber of Commerce has more information: historicbrownsville.com or 541-928-0831. M I D - W I L L A M E T T E VA L L E Y G U I D E

FOSTER & GREEN PETER RESERVOIRS
Diverse campgrounds from rustic tent sites to full RV hookups and comfortable cabins.
There are many water and woodland activities at these beautiful sites. Foster Reservoir has good bank access at several rest stops and campgrounds, and three seasonal boat ramps and features trout, bass, perch and catfish. Boat angling is best April 1 to mid June. Bank angling is popular near the dam at the Army Corps of Engineers park and at flat areas along the south side of the reservoir. The forested setting of Green Peter Reservoir in Whitcomb Creek County Park provides spectacular mountain views, bird-watching, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping and water skiing. Jet skis, speed boats and fishing boats welcome. It is a premier kokanee fishery and also supports stocked rainbow trout and smallmouth bass. linnparks.com M I D - W I L L A M E T T E VA L L E Y G U I D E
