Santiam, the 2013 Guide & Business Directory for the North Santiam Canyon, is your guide to opportunities here. Water is the element that connects the communities of Mehama, Lyons, Mill City, Gates, Detroit, Idanha and Marion Forks. The North Santiam River, its tributaries and Detroit Lake form the backdrop for daily life. Our magnificent natural setting shapes both work and play in these wonderfully distinct communities. If your aim is recreation, this is the place. Choose from kayaking, rafting, tubing, skiing, swimming, hiking and golf. Those in the mood for relaxation enjoy fishing and beautiful views. For those looking for opportunity, the area offers both business and natural resources.

30

Businesses listed in the directory section play a vital role in the local economy, providing products, services and jobs. The organizations listed enrich the canyon’s civic and social life. Bringing them together for you in this guide is a community contribution by the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce and its members. While other rivers in the Willamette system may have more fanfare, the North47Santiam has the most fish. We think you’ll find the communities along the North Santiam also have the most26promise! 6

North Santiam River A 92-mile tributary of the Santiam River, the North Santiam originates in the Cascades near Mount Jefferson. During spring snowmelt it offers many Class III and Class IV rapids, including Spencer’s Hole, Carnivore and Mill City Falls. During the summer the North Santiam moves at a more relaxing pace with Class II rapids. In September and October when Detroit Dam releases water in preparation for winter rains, Class III whitewater returns. The scenery is lush, particularly in the autumn, the wildlife plentiful, the water clear. Fall trips may include sightings of migrating salmon.

The North Santiam Canyon is home to some of the best water recreation in Oregon, with the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake offering opportunities for kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming. Detroit Lake is a multi-purpose water project, created by the Army Corps of Engineers upon completion of the 463-foot Detroit Dam in 1953. Powered by two generator units, the dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation, and a recreational lake. Detroit Lake is nine miles long, holds 455,100 acre-feet of water and has 33 miles of shoreline. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the waters annually with 125,000 rainbow trout along with 4 | North Santiam Canyon Guide & Business Directory 2014

fingerling rainbow trout, kokanee and Chinook salmon. There are also brown bullhead, largemouth bass and pumpkinseed in the reservoir. The main game of the North Santiam River, Steelhead and Chinook Salmon, make their way to the area in May and remain until August. Substantial runs of these fish continue to be abundant in the North Santiam below Detroit. The downstream point of the fish runs is located at Packsaddle Park about 60 miles upstream from the Willamette. The North Santiam is a popular spot for kayaking and float trips, with access to the river provided at many of the communities and at parks from Lyons and Mehama to Big Cliff Dam.

Elkhorn Golf Course An exceptionally scenic course, Elkhorn offers a challenging 18 holes of golf, even for the low handicapper. Elkhorn is an 18 hole regulation length course, 71 par, 6242 yards. There are chipping and putting practice areas for golfers interested in working on their short game. The course is located at 32295 North Fork Road SE, Lyons.

Santiam Horse Camp The Santiam Horse Camp and day-use area lies at the starting point for a system of trails for horses, bicyclists, and hikers in the Santiam State Forest. The area features room for trailer parking with corrals and stock water for horses, and offers trail users miles of diverse forest with clear streams and unique geological formations. The camp, located about two miles south of Gates, is open May through October. For more information contact the Santiam State Forest, 503-859-2151.

Explore! EXPLORE

EXPLORE

The North Santiam Canyon is a mecca for hikers. There are trails seemingly everywhere you look. Riverside meanderings. Hill climbs that will test your stamina. Amazing meetings of water and rock and old-growth trees, with moss everywhere, water gurgling on all sides. Here is a look at three representative jaunts (please see William L. Sullivan’s “100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades” for more options … than you thought were possible… he’s the best there is). The wilderness area is more than just a place to mosey among the trees. It is a symbol of the fight that took place in the 1980s over Forest Service logging. It helped turn a small nocturnal bird into a bumper sticker and changed the way Oregon does business. Interestingly, the region’s first industry was hard-rock extraction, with the buildings of Jawbone Flats, the old mining town at the center of the wilderness, still standing, incongruously, amid a cathedral of old-growth trees. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center maintains and stewards Jawbone Flats, a rejuvenated historic 1930 mining town in the heart of the 35,000-acre ancient forest watershed of the Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Recreation Area. The Opal Creek Forest was first inhabited by Native Americans. Miners arrived in the valley and discovered gold in 1859. The Jawbone Flats mining camp began in 1930. Some roads and the Gold Creek Bridge were constructed in 1939 under President Roosevelt’s New Deal. Friends of Opal Creek was established in 1989 to secure permanent protection of the Opal Creek ecosystem. In 1992, mining ceased and the Shiny Rock Mining Co. gave Friends of Opal Creek a land gift valued at $12.6 million. Included were 151 acres of land: Jawbone Flats and a stand of old-growth forest. In October 1996 federal legislation established the 20,827 acre Opal Creek Wilderness, the 13,538 acre Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area and a 3,066 acre

Heritage & History

Glaciers formed what today is known as the North Santiam Canyon Life Museum Canyon, carving out the area from 143 Wall St., Mill City Lyons-Mehama to Gates, as well Memorial Day - Labor as the hollow where Detroit Lake now exists. The canyon served for Day, Open Fridays and centuries as a highway for Native Saturdays Americans, especially the Santiam or by appointment: band of the Kalapooya, Klamath, 503-897-2816 and Warm Springs tribes. In the late 1870s, white settlers arrived from the Willamette Valley. Between 1888 and 1890, the Oregon Pacific Railroad penetrated the North Santiam Canyon and encouraged the growth of small towns along its path. Originally designed to be a transcontinental railroad before succumbing to financial difficulties, the railroad became a means for the transportation of huge quantities of logs to feed the Willamette Valley’s timber industry, from Idanha to Corvallis. The canyon’s economy was dependent on logging, farming, lumber mills, and mining for most of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Hammond Lumber Company’s mill, established in what would become Mill City, was one of the largest Douglas-fir mills on the West Coast. To get an up-close encounter with local history and wilderness, visit Jawbone Flats. The old mining camp’s historic 1920s buildings remain, giving visitors a sense of the life of the old west in the Oregon Cascades. Jawbone Flats is owned and operated by the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center. Call 503-892-2782 for more information. The best way to learn about the area’s rich and interesting history is by visiting the Canyon Life Museum, housed in the historic 1927 Southern Pacific Railroad depot located at 143 Wall St., Mill City. Exhibits vividly demonstrate the development of the canyon, including the fascinating life of early settlers. Read the diary of the young wife of a logger and examine the grainy sepia photographs of miners. Displays also include a three-dimensional topographic map of the canyon.

Jawbone Flats at Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center

In February 2013 the North Santiam Historical Society 503-892-2782 was awarded a $40,000 grant from the Meyer Memorial www.opalcreek.org Trust to help complete the restoration of the neighboring building, former home of the Mill City State Bank. Once restored, the building be used as an addition to the museum. Plans call for the annex to house photographs and artifacts from 1935 to 1985.

Breitenbush Hot Springs The Breitenbush Hot Springs, about 10 miles northeast of Detroit, were used by Native Americans for healing and ritual purification. President Theodore Roosevelt granted the land that includes the springs in a homestead patent in 1904. Merle Bruckman purchased the land in 1927 and converted it into a health spa, which he operated for more than 20 years. Alex Beamer bought the then-dilapidated facilities in 1977 and converted the area into the modern Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort & Conference Center. In addition to its renowned hot springs, the center offers healing arts and massage, daily well-being programs, performances, hiking trails, and workshops. Breitenbush hosts more than 150 events each year. Visit www.breitenbush.com or call 503-854-3320 for information. 10 | North Santiam Canyon Guide & Business Directory 2014

In 1886 four entrepreneurs from Stayton gave Mill City its name when they purchased land next to a falls on the North Santiam River. The men had machinery hauled up on wagons from Stayton and constructed a mill. A small community formed around the mill in the following years and Mill City’s first post office was established in 1888. The city was incorporated in 1947. Today Mill City is the largest community in the North Santiam Canyon. Recreational opportunities include three parks that offer playgrounds, boating, fishing, water activities and picnicking. The city has a fire hall, a city hall, stores, restaurants, a post office, a pharmacy, a museum, a senior center, a library, a video store, a visitors’ center and retail stores. It is subdivided by the scenic North Santiam River; north of the river is Marion County and south of the river is Linn County. The two dams that control the river flows are well upstream from Mill City, which means great salmon and steelhead fishing and lots of river recreation.

Detroit

The completion of the dam, and the filling of the lake it created, transformed the city from a logging community into one of the most popular tourist attractions in Oregon. Detroit today offers an appealing balance of small-town friendliness and recreational excitement. The lake is a popular location for boating, fishing, swimming, sailing and other water sports. Aside from water activities there are opportunities for camping, picnicking, biking, hiking, hunting, and backpacking. In the winter, Detroit offers access to sledding and skiing. 14 | North Santiam Canyon Guide & Business Directory 2014

Idanha

Idanha’s original name was Muskrat Camp. It later adopted the name Idanha, a name that was inspired by the Natural Mineral Water Company in Soda Springs, Idaho. The company bottled water called “Idan-Ha.” The Oregon Pacific Railroad system was completed along the North Santiam River up to Idanha in 1889 but construction didn’t continue eastward because of a lack of funding. The post office was established in 1895 and the city was incorporated in 1950. Idanha is the smallest town in the North Santiam Canyon and the highest settlement along the North Santiam River. Located in the shadow of Mt. Jefferson three miles east of Detroit, Idanha has a store, café, post office, library and a city park. It is located about halfway between Salem and Sisters.

Marion Forks

Marion Forks is an unincorporated community on the North Santiam Highway, 15 miles south of Detroit. named for the nearby river fork where Marion Creek meets the North Santiam River, it is home to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Marion Forks fish hatchery, just south of the community. The Willamette National Forest Marion Forks Campground is near the hatchery, next to Marion Creek.

GENE’S MEAT MARKET

Marion Forks Guard Station Marion Forks Hatchery offers a large pond where visitors can feed adult rainbow trout. Adult steelhead and salmon can be viewed at Minto Pond adult salmon holding facility June - October. There are two National Register of Historic Places listed structures in the Marion Forks area, Independence Prairie Ranger Station and Marion Forks Guard Station. Independence Prairie Ranger Station, built about 1910, is the oldest standing administrative structure associated with what is now the Willamette National Forest. It exemplifies late pioneer architecture using native materials and elementary design. The Marion Forks Guard Station was built in 1935 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
