Food, Music, Dancing – A Touch of Bavaria!
Welcome to the 58th annual Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, a place to make great memories and discover a little touch of Bavaria!
Oktoberfest is a celebration of the community’s heritage. Nine German families were early settlers of the area.
Today the children of the community participate in sharing that heritage with others by joining in the Oktoberfest Dance Troupe.
“[The Troupe] gives them ownership in
the festival,” manager Kelly Grassman, explained. “It teaches them about volunteering, giving of their time and doing something for others.”
Created by a small group of women in 1990, the O’Fest Dance Troupe has grown the past 33 years from 54 boys and girls performing the Weaver’s Dance and the Chicken Dance to more than 400 dancers putting on an hour-long performance twice a day for four days. You can see their work
at The Village Bandstand Thursday, Friday and Saturday at noon and 6 p.m. Sunday at noon and 3 p.m.
The coaches volunteer eight months out of the year, holding rehearsals an additional 144 hours each summer and fall.
Marilyn Hall stores 1,000 costumes, and fits them to each year’s dancers. What’s extraordinary is that the program is free to anyone who wants to participate.
“Our collective goal is to make sure that anyone who wants to dance can.”
MUSIC! – All Kinds, Everywhere!
What’s a festival without music? Whether your taste runs to sacred, traditional folk, or Polka rock, there’s a venue with musicians sure to please at Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest. Check out the schedules that start on page 20 for venues and times.
ALPINE ECHOES
The Alpine Echoes Band plays music for happy occasions, specializing in German and Scandinavian music. And of course, no party is complete without the famous Chicken Dance. Orchestration includes accordion, drums, flute, tuba, cowbells, bass, trumpet and vocals.
CHARDON POLKA BAND
The “punks of polka” from Ohio return to Mount Angel, a fan favorite since their terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!
DIE SCHLAUBERGER (dSB)
Festival-goers across the nation have a love affair going on with America’s number one German Band, die Schlauberger. This band is a powerhouse of musical expertise and expends enough energy to light up energetic Oktoberfest crowds. From the moment they step on stage until they have wrung the final note, die Schlauberger has the audience up and dancing.
EUROPEAN TAKE-OUT BAND
The band is grown from German, Slovenian and Norwegian roots. Members have been entertaining audiences for years with accordians, bass guitar, drums and vocals. They make the Street Dance a party open to everyone.
FESTIVAL BRASS
Big and brassy, these wonderful musicians entertain in The Weingarten. The seven-piece ensemble formed in 1990 and has played hundreds of events throughout the Northwest. It’s a relaxed, fun-loving group of friends.
GRUBER FAMILY BAND
The Gruber Family Band goes back to the 1900s. Five generations later, the Gruber Family Band is keeping the tradition alive. Al Gruber brought the family band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest more than 20 years ago. When he retired, his grandson Michael, took over the job of playing the piano accordion, along with the button box. Toni and Peter continued on sax and the drums. Toni’s son. Martin plays piano, sax and clarinet and loves to sing.
MANUELA HORN & THE POWERKRAUTS
Manuela Horn, the Austrian Amazon known for her yodeling, dancing, rocking, acting and comedy will appear both solo and with her band the Powerkrauts at this year’s festival. After starting out in German TV shows, Horn got her big break in the 2009 America’s Got Talent competition, where she advanced to the
semifinals. Her motto is “It’s always Oktoberfest somewhere!” and she has appeared at Oktoberfests all over the United States. Manuela says she developed her yodeling talents when she was 12 and practiced while on long family road trips through Austria.
MARION COUNTY CITIZENS BAND
The Marion County Citizens Band is a diverse group of musicians who delight in bringing the joy of concert band music to the public. Their repertoire includes every genre of music, from Sousa marches to classic Glenn Miller arrangements to serious composers like Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams. They are the Official Concert Band of Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest.
ROSE CITY ACCORDION CLUB
The club is a non-profit organization comprised of individuals who share enjoyment and enthusiasm for the accordion. The club embraces all styles of accordion music and welcomes all who have an interest in the accordion whether they play or not. The players in the Prostgarten and the Hopfengarten are all volunteers. “Squeeze” some music into your life! For information about the club go to www.rosecityaccordionclub.org/
SALZBURGER ECHO
The 12-foot Swiss Alphorns, Austrian cowbells and harmony yodeling bring audiences face to face with European culture. The Alphorns shown in the photo to the left are a must-see!
S-BAHN
Why the name “S-Bahn”? S-Bahn is the commuter train that con-
nects cities in Germany with the suburbs. The S-Bahn connects people, it brings people together. Singer and accordionist Richard Tyce founded the S-Bahn in Vancouver in the 1990s. The band includes Bruce Henczel – drums, marimba, viola, vocals; Alexander Flock –guitar and vocals; and Jim Hopson – trombone, tuba, alphorn, bass guitar and vocals. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, the S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).
THE GORDANAIRS
The Gordanairs are back, bringing their unique blend of Old World music and dance. Whether by accordian or German slap dancing, they light up the venue. They hail from British Columbia and have spent decades recording and performing traditional German music, often pieces composed or arranged by leader Gordon Groening.
THE KLÄBERHEADS
The Kläberheads will return all the way from Ohio, celebrating almost 100 years of Oktoberfest performances throughout the country. Founded by German immigrant and self-taught musician Franz Klaber in 1930, the band is led today by his son, also named Franz Klaber. He is joined by a close-knit group of family and lovers of traditional German music.
Z MUSIKMAKERS
Z Musikmakers have delighted Oktoberfest audiences since the group’s founding in 1977 by Paul Zollner. This dynamic band entertains with traditional polka music, big band tunes and so much more. A guaranteed delight to all audiences!
Jim Kinghorn Chardon Polka BandThe Alpinegarten on South Garfield across from the Weingarten prides itself on doing things a little bit different. The venue is smaller than the Weingarten or Biergarten and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Learn to do the Chicken Dance, join in the songs, or step onto the dance floor. The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. The Alpinegarten is a WiFi hot spot!

ENGELGARTEN A Casual Atmosphere
Mt. Angel Oktoberfest’s newest venue is for those seeking a low-key, casual atmosphere.
The Engelgarten, meaning “Angel Garden,” premiered last year. You’ll find it on the north end of Garfield Street, in the Arts and Crafts area.
Festival spokesperson Monica Bochsler said the garten was the combination of a festival that keeps growing and a property owner who wanted to help.
“Engelgarten is one of those serendipitous events,” she said.
Bochsler describes the Engelgarten as “a low key place, designed for friendly conversation.”
There will be no live performances and no cover charge. Guests are welcome to bring in food purchased from one of the many vendors. Plus, festivalgoers can try some of Oktoberfest’s specialty brews!

Our Glockenspiel
It’s not every day you can look up and feel like you are on tour in Europe.
While having fun at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, you have that opportunity four times a day to view what might be the nation’s tallest musical animated Glockenspiel. Located in the heart of the village, it springs into action at 11 a.m., 1, 4, and 7 p.m. The bells toll, the music begins, and the seven carved figures begin their circular journey, sharing the history of the area. These figures, some carved by local volunteers, were designed to depict important remembrances of Mount Angel’s intriguing historical events and personages.
The Kalapuya Brave was one of many Indian natives who climbed the butte (Abbey Hill) to pray, at
what they called “Tapalamaho” or “dwelling place of the Great Spirit”.
Robert and Katrina Zollner, two of the earliest settlers, arrived here in 1867 with eight other German families. Robert, with only 25 cents to his name, was granted a homestead of 220 acres.
continued on page 42
Our Glockenspiel Tied to Our History
continued from page 40
Robert and Katrina are ancestors of the festival’s own Z-Musikmakers, who perform in the Biergarten.
Mathias Butsch arrived in 1878. He is dubbed “the father of Mount Angel.” He was instrumental in building the first church, railroad station, and general store. Most significantly, he is credited with inviting the Benedictine Monks to establish their monastery here.
Prior Adelhelm Odermatt arrived in 1881. The monastery was finally built on the butte that is now known as Abbey Hill – ancient Tapalamoho. Fr. Adelhelm came from Engleberg in
Switzerland, and suggested the town be called “Mount Angel”, the English meaning of Engleberg.
Sister Bernadine Wachter and her sisters came here in 1882 from the Swiss Convent of Maria Rickenback. Sister Bernadine became the first Prioress of the Benedictine Convent and their new school. The beautiful grounds are
on South Main.
Papa Oom-Pah, with his rosy cheeks, flowing mustache, checkered shirt, leather pants and playing his big tuba, came along to be the representation of Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest, first formed in1966. He is a true symbol of the fun and excitement of the Northwest’s best loved Bavarian folk festival.
Bavarian children are the grand finale, as they come forward on their swing, and proceed to sing one of the best loved songs of festival goers –Edelweiss. The song is sung by Mount Angel’s own school children. If you listen carefully at the end, you will hear them giggling.
Oktoberfest Thanks All Our Sponsors...
The Mount Angel Oktoberfest is an incredible community effort. Over 7,500 volunteers make it happen under the direction of a 19-member volunteer board of directors. A major part of the festival’s success comes from the support given by the region’s business community. Without their direct financial contributions and in-kind offerings the festival could not continue.
This year we welcome four new sponsors: Xfinity, home of the 10G Network, is coming alongside the Mt Angel Oktoberfest community to sponsor the WIFI Lounge in the Hopfengarten. Xfinity is growing service areas in Mt Angel to deliver world-class broadband, mobile, and entertainment that provides customers with technology that powers the future. We are thrilled to have them join our historic tradition!

We Couldn’t Do It Without You!
Les Schwab Tire Stores in the mid-valley come together to help sponsor the People Movers. Their generous donation allows Mount Angel to operate the shuttles for festival-goers. These trolleys takes attendees to parking, St. Mary Church, Mount Angel Abbey and downtown. They also provide Oktoberfest sponsorship for the Saluting Our Armed Forces Day, helping to reduce the cost of admission for our veterans and service men and women.
US Bank and its Mount Angel Branch are one of Oktoberfest’s oldest sponsors. US Bank has provided sponsorship to Oktoberfest since the very first festival in 1966. The bank sponsors the Mount Angel Dance Troupe; the young people of Mount Angel who perform each day at the Bandstand, including the Webertanz and the Engelberg Dancers. Thank you, US Bank.

Complete Wireless Solutions of Salem provides a wireless communications solution for the festival. The state-of-the-art digital integrated system is used for crowd and traffic control, coordination of entertainment, the movement of supplies among the food booths and the arts and craft show, and overall festival security.
Herc Rental of Salem provides the festival with forklifts, scissor lifts and other essential equipment used for set-up and tear down, security lighting for our parking lots and emergency power generation equipment. Enjoy a superb selection of premium quality wines, beers and scrumptious food from St. Mary Parish booth. Roth’s Fresh Markets also sponsors the Oktoberfest Kickoff Party the week-
end prior to the festival. Visit Roth’s the year round for great Oktoberfest beers, wines, and sausages.
Umpqua Bank sponsors the Prostgarten, a quiet gem tucked beside the little white house that is home to the Mt. Angel Historical Society on East College Street. Umpqua Bank assists us with the festival, making sure Oktoberfest has support for its financial operations.
NW Natural supports the musical offerings in beautiful St. Mary Parish Church. Free concerts are scheduled each day of the festival. NW Natural supports Oktoberfest during the most difficult parts of the Festival – set up and take down – Wednesday before Festival and Monday following Oktoberfest. NW Natural pitches in to feed the 150 volunteers hard at work. Perhaps you have rested under the NW Natural tents located throughout the festival. These spaces are always appreciated whether it is rain or shine.
Wilco a local, farmer-owned cooperative since 1967, supplies quality products in their retail farm stores including workwear & footwear, pet food & supplies, lawn & garden supplies, plants, hardware, paint and livestock feed/equipment. As supporters of youth in agriculture, Wilco sponsors the Farm Fun activities at the Kindergarten. Kids love the hay maze, pony rides and animals for petting.
Portland General Electric supports the Kindergarten area, helping kids enjoy the simple joys of being together as friends, having faces painted, and enjoying the balloons tied to fun shapes.
The Oregon Garden Resort is the proud sponsor of the family Alpinegarten. “We are truly proud to be a part of this wonderful family event. We know the visitors to Oktoberfest will love the interactive music in the Alpinegarten and they will surely enjoy their stay with us.” The Oregon Garden Resort is where many band members stay during the Festival.
Mt. Angel Sausage Company provides funding for the festival’s designated driver program and is Mount Angel’s own European style sausage maker. They are open year-round to enjoy Oktoberfest-like atmosphere and great sausage and beverages. Relax in the summer and enjoy a beer and sausage on their patio.
Donald RV & Storage presents the music at the Cruz-n Car Show. Donald RV & Storage helps with car show trophy expenses - thank you Donald RV & Storage, for your support of the Car Show in this special way, and your years of support for Oktoberfest.
Touch of Bavaria sponsors the Oktoberfest Olympics. They are located here in Mount Angel in the old Blacksmith Shop. Touch of Bavaria makes sure our distinguished guests and TV personalities are outfitted in the best Bavarian style, and have a great selection of tracht including authentic lederhosen and dirndls from Germany.
Oktoberfest says a great big DANKE SCHÖN to their sponsors for helping Oktoberfest become the Northwest’s best-loved folk festival.
Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation
The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for over 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world.
All the beers from Germany sold at the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality!
Mt. Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors.
We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver.
DESIGNATED DRIVERS pledge not to drink alcoholic beverag-
es while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks. All participants must be 21 or older with a driver’s license.
Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival in the Alpinegarten, Biergarten and Weingarten.
GET A SAFE RIDE HOME
– If you don’t have a designated driver, and find that you have passed the point where you can safely drive home, take advantage of onsite taxis usually found in front of the Biergarten, or arrange for a Lyft or Uber, both operate in our area. Load your app, the address of the Biergarten in the Mt. Angel Community Festhalle is 500 Wilco Hwy NE. and load your home address. Plan ahead and book a Shuttle ride on our website..
Know your limit and DON’T DRINK and DRIVE.
