Mt. Angel Oktoberfest

The sounds of oom pah pa, the aroma of grilled sausage, and shouts of “PROST” herald the arrival of the 53rd annual Oktoberfest in Mount Angel . . . The festival kicks off with a traditional German Webertanz (weavers dance) performed by Mount Angel school children at noon on Thursday, Sept. 13, and daily through Sunday, Sept. 16.

CHARDON POLKA BAND – The “punks of polka” from

Ohio return to Mount Angel after a terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!

DIE SCHLAUBERGER – Festival-goers love this powerhouse

of musical expertise. From the moment they step on stage they have the audience dancing to renditions of German favorites and other crowd pleasing tunes. Their mission is “Keeping the Traditionalists on their Feet and the New Generation Interested.” Die Schlauberger (dSb for those who have difficulty with German) means the “Wise Guys” (kind of).

DONAUMUSIKANTEN – The “Original Donaumusikanten”

band was formed to meet the needs of Oktoberfest for an authentic Bavarian Band. The band returns to Oregon from banks of Germany’s beautiful Blue Danube River, courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest.

back to the 1900s. Five generations later, Al Gruber brought the band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. When he retired, grandson Michael took over the piano accordion.

ALPINEGARTEN A place for the family

The Alpinegarten on South Garfield across from the Weingarten prides itself on doing things a little bit different. Learn to do the Chicken Dance, join in the songs, take part in the contests. The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. If you are a beer geek, this is the place to try a great beer, both from the Northwest and Germany. Mount Angel Oktoberfest newcomers Molly B & The Squeezebox Band will perform, as will the Gruber Family Bavarian Band, sponsored by NW Natural, and the ever-popular Gordonaires European Musik. The venue is smaller than the Weingarten or Biergarten and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The entertainers do a great job of interacting with the crowd. The Oregon Garden Resort is the sponsor of the Alpinegarten. The Alpinegarten also is a WiFi hot spot!

WEINGARTEN There’s a party going on ...

The crowd is on its feet, clapping and smiling, the musicians are off the stage and on the tables... What’s this? Weingarten fans know it can only be the “Donaumusikanten.” The band has been performing at Oktoberfest more than 20 years. They were formed to specifically meet the needs of Oktoberfest for an authentic Bavarian band. Every year or so, one or two members swap out, which keeps the group fresh and exciting. They have made the Weingarten a showcase of Bavarian folk culture. The band returns to Oregon from banks of Germany’s beautiful blue Danube River courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. The Weingarten is also the place to hear Mount Angel’s own Z Musikmakers — a zany mix of talented family and friends who have delighted Oktoberfest audiences, young and old, since the group’s founding in 1977 by Mount Angel’s own Paul Zollner. Oktoberfest Board congratulates Benedictine Brewery on opening The monks at Mount Angel Abbey have become part of a 1,500-yearold monastic tradition, brewing artisanal beer. For years the Mount Angel Oktoberfest Weingarten has previewed the Benedictine Brewery’s Black Habit Ale. This year, the brewery’s new St. Michael’s Helles Lager is on the menu. In August, the Oktoberfest board joined the monks in celebrating the completion of the Benedictine Brewery and St. Michael Taproom, at 400 Humpert Road, NE. It opens to the public this month. The first days of operation will be during Oktoberfest, with limited taproom service available daily noon to 5 p.m. The official opening will be Sept. 22 - 23, noon to 8 p.m. At right, Abbott Jeremy in the new taproom with Mount Angel Oktoberfest Board President Chris Bishoff.

Our Sponsors Make Oktoberfest Possible The Mount Angel Oktoberfest is an incredible community effort. Over 7,500 volunteers make it happen under the direction of a 19 member volunteer Board of Directors. A major part of the festival’s success comes from the support of the region’s business community; without their direct financial contributions and in-kind offerings, the festival could not continue. Mt. Angel Vitamins is Oktoberfest’s newest sponsor. Created in 2012, Mt. Angel Vitamins is a local Premium vitamin and supplement line that is sold on Amazon and in retailers all over the US, and is manufactured right here in Mt. Angel. They sponsor the Hopfengarten, located right out their front door. Relax courtesy of their generosity. Papé Machinery helps Oktoberfest work and play. Papé provides the John Deere tractors to move the peoplemovers and a fleet of John Deere gators to control and support festival operations. They keep everyone in motion. Papé supplied the Pedal Tractors for the Pedal Tractor Race on Kick-Off Saturday, a fun tradition!

festival’s downtown and non-profit booth operations. Pepsi Cola is the soft drink of choice at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. Complete Wireless Solutions of Salem provides a wireless, state-ofthe-art digital integrated system used for crowd and traffic control, coordination of entertainment, movement of supplies among the booths, and for overall festival security. Herc Rental of Salem provides the festival with forklifts, scissor lifts and other equipment used for set-up and tear down, security lighting for parking lots and emergency power generation. Herc is a big part of the reason the festival goes up in a day, and comes down in a day. Mark E. Carter – UX Developer + Design helped guide the construction of the website for Oktoberfest.org. Mark keeps the site running smoothly and acts as an advisor to Oktoberfest on site content. Visit Mount Angel Oktoberfest at www.oktoberfest.org.

Les Schwab Tire Stores in the mid-valley come together to help sponsor the peoplemovers. Their generous donation allows operation of the shuttles, taking attendees to parking, the church, Abbey, and downtown. They also sponsor Saluting Our Armed Forces Day, reducing admission cost for veterans and service men and women.

McDonald Wholesale has a reputation for foodservice distribution excellence in the Northwest. The principals of honesty, integrity and reliability on which the company was built are still reinforced today. McDonald Wholesale supports Mount Angel Oktoberfest and the non-profit food booths in the downtown area. They set up a commissary to help food booths manage their supplies.

US Bank and its Mount Angel Branch are one of Oktoberfest’s oldest sponsors. US Bank has provided sponsorship to Oktoberfest since its very first festival in 1966. The bank sponsors the youth sports activities during the festival, which this year includes a 5th and 6th grade football game to Saturday morning festivities.

1859 Oregon’s Magazine is our advertising sponsor, helping us reach the entire state of Oregon. 1859 explores the landscapes, personalities, movers and shakers, history and architecture that is the jewel of the Pacific Northwest. 1859 presents the state’s rich history, it’s incredible destinations and colorful personalities.

Considering a property purchase? Let Ticor Title assist. Their Silverton Title and Escrow team is dedicated to creating a superior client experience with every transaction. Lufthansa has been flying a festival band to Oktoberfest for the last 28 years. It is the official airline of Oktoberfest. Their assistance makes the appearance of “Donaumusikanten”, a talented group of six German musicians possible. They play each evening in the Weingarten. Thinking of visiting Germany soon? Enter the Passport to Germany Raffle – airline tickets sponsored by Lufthansa! They know their way around Europe and the world. GUTER FLUG! Roth’s Fresh Markets helps the Weingarten to bring to you the magnificent sounds of the Alps, and the comfort of Gemütlichkeit. Enjoy a superb selection of premium quality wines, beers and scrumptious food from St. Mary Parish booth. Visit Roth’s the year round for great Oktoberfest beers, wines, and sausages. Columbia Bank and its Mount Angel Branch sponsor the Prostgarten this year. This quiet little gem is hidden behind the food booths on Garfield Street. The branch is on Charles Street. Columbia Bank also assists the festival with support for its financial operations. NW Natural supports the musical offerings in the beautifully restored St. Mary Parish Church. There are daily free concerts during the festival. Artists include the Cabin Fever, Loretta Kaiser, Second Wind, Unistus Choir and more. NW Natural supports Oktoberfest during set up and taking it down, pitching in to feed the 150 volunteers. NW Natural provides the tents downtown. They are appreciated rain or shine. Wilco, supplier of quality products in their stores, agribusiness and fuels departments, supports the Farm Fun activities at the

Kindergarten. Kids love the hay maze, pony rides and animals for petting. The farm kids who assist with the area appreciate funds they raise and use for their agricultural projects. Thanks, Wilco! Portland General Electric supports the Kindergarten area, helping kids enjoy the simple joys of being together as friends, having their faces painted, and enjoying balloons tied to fun shapes. PGE also provides the Mad Science in the Kindergarten Performance Pavilion. The Oregon Garden Resort is the sponsor of the family Alpinegarten. Resort operations manager, Christine Diacetis expressed her excitement when she stated “We are truly proud to be a part of this wonderful family event. We know the visitors to Oktoberfest will love the interactive music in the Alpinegarten and they will surely enjoy their stay with us and a visit to The Oregon Garden.” The Oregon Garden Resort is where many band members stay during the festival. Mt. Angel Sausage Co. provides funding for the festival’s downtown area. It is Mount Angel’s own European-style sausage maker. They are open year-round to enjoy Oktoberfest-like atmosphere and great sausage and beverages. Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy a beer and sausage on their deck. Donald RV & Storage presents the car music at the Cruz-n Car Show. It also helps with car show trophy expenses. Thank you, Donald RV & Storage, for your support of the Cruz-N in this special way, and your years of support for Oktoberfest. Touch of Bavaria sponsors the Oktoberfest Olympics. They are located in the old Blacksmith Shop on College Avenue in Mount Angel. Touch of Bavaria makes sure our distinguished guests and TV personalities are outfitted in the best Bavarian style, and have a great selection of authentic lederhosen and dirndls from Germany. Oktoberfest says a great big DANKE SCHÖN to the sponsors for helping it continue to be the Northwest’s best-loved folk festival.

Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for over 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world. All the beers from Germany sold at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality! Mount Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors. We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver. Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival. Designated Drivers pledge not to drink alcoholic beverages while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. Designated Drivers, after purchasing admission, can receive a wristband entitling them to water and soda during their visit to the venue. All participants must be 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. Get a Safe Ride Home – If you do drink and find that you have passed the point where you can safely drive home, take advantage of onsite taxis or call for a rideshare and have a safe ride home. Know your limit and DON’T DRINK and DRIVE.

McDonald Wholesale loves Oktoberfest! We’re proud to be delivering the best brats, sauerkraut, mustards and buns to Mt. Angel and all of Oregon. If you’re a food vendor, restaurateur, or chef enjoying the snacks, please give us a call and find out how we can make your business more festive. Prost!
