Willkommen! • The ENTERTAINERS

New for 2021 - Kids Polka Party! Tecie Zollner Astorga has been a part of the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest celebration since she was a toddler – singing on stage with her sisters, while her parents played in the band known as Z Musikmakers.

formed by our family; a few classics from the Sound of Music as well as ‘The Happy Wanderer’, a song that we recorded for the kindergarten dancers at the Bandstand venue this year,” Astorga described.

Now, with four children of her own – aged eight, six, four and two – Astorga is creating something entirely new, the “Kids Polka Party with the Astorgas”.

“After the sing-a-long, we will turn on some of our favorite polka dance music with balloons, bubbles and lots of fun.”

“One of our favorite family activities is to have dance parties in our living room, as well as sing songs together,” Astorga said of the part music plays in the life of her family. She and her husband, Ed, will share the fun with festival-goers in the Biergarten on Saturday, and Sunday from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m.

Though specifically created with kids aged two to 12 in mind, the event is open to all ages and abilities. “The Mount Angel Oktoberfest has always been a family-friendly, multi-generational festival,” Astorga said. “This is just an additional family-friendly option to participate in while you are enjoying the Oktoberfest with your kids.” -- Melissa Wagoner

“The ‘Kids Polka Party’ will start out with sing-along songs perWe are delighted to present our 56th Mount Angel Oktoberfest live and in person once again. For the safety of our guests and volunteers we will follow all applicable state and local government-mandated Covid-19 gathering rules. There are several reasons we decided to hold Oktoberfest. One of the most important is the financial importance of the eventfor our 50 non-profit food booths. These groups rely heavily on the income from Oktoberfest sales to fund their projects. Another is Oktoberfest, Inc. has expenses to be 4 • Sept. 16-19, 2021

met regardless of whether we hold a festival. Think property taxes, insurance, basic utilities. Finally, much of Oktoberfest is out of doors, where risk of Covid-19 transmission is greatly reduced. Food booth purchases are made out of doors, the Prostgarten and Hopfengarten are tents. The Biergarten and Weingarten have large outdoor tents. The Bandstand is open air. Kindergarten is an open field. We welcome you back and encourage you to help us follow the rules to keep our community safe!

Chardon Polka Band

Willkommen! ENTERTAINERS Willkommen!• The • The ENTERTAINERS

Many favorites return ALPINE ECHOES – The Alpine Echoes Band plays music for happy occasions, specializing in German and Scandinavian music. And, of course, no party is complete without the famous Chick Dance. Orchestration includes accordion, drums, flute, tuba cowbells, bas, trumpet andvocals.

CHARDON POLKA BAND – The “punks of polka”

from Ohio return to Mount Angel after a terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!

DIE SCHLAUBERGER – This powerhouse of musical expertise keeps the audience dancing to German favorites and other crowd pleasing tunes. Their mission is “Keeping the Traditionalists on their Feet and the New Generation Interested.” Die Schlauberger (dSb for those who have difficulty with German) means the “Wise Guys” (kind of).

DOPPELBOCK – A last-minute replacement band for the

Leavenworth Oktoberfest turned into a favorite of Oktoberfest audiences throughout Oregon and Washington. Blending the traditional German/Polka/Yodeling with rock and roll roots, they created what some call Polka Rock. Their goal is to boldly go where no accordion has gone before.

EUROPEAN TAKE-OUT BAND - The band is grown

from German, Slovenian and Norwegian roots. Members have been entertaining audiences for years with accordians, bass guitar, drums and vocals. 6 • Sept. 16-19, 2021

See schedule for times

FESTIVAL BRASS– Big and brassy, these wonderful msicians entertain at The Village Bandstand as well as rotating through the Alpinegarten, Weingarten and Biergarten.

GRUBER FAMILY BAND – Their family music history

goes back to the 1900s. Five generations later, Al Gruber brought the band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. When he retired, grandson Michael took over the piano accordion!

MOLLIE B & The SQUEEZEBOX BAND – The

award-winning Squeezebox, featuring International Polka Association Hall of Fame recipient Mollie B and twotime Grammy nominee Ted Lange, returns to Mount Angel. Their performances span genres with a repertoire of over 800 songs, and solid vocals in English, Polish, German and Czech.

SALZBURGER ECHO – The 12-foot Swiss Alphorns,

Austrian cowbells and harmony yodeling bring audiences face to face with European culture.

S-BAHN – S-Bahn is the commuter train that connects

cities in Germany with the suburbs. The S-Bahn band connects people. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).

Z MUSIKMAKERS – This is a zany mix of musically

talented family and friends who have delighted Oktoberfest audiences since the group’s founding in 1977 by Mount Angel’s own Paul Zollner. They present a festive mix of traditional and Bavarian-flavored music.

Family memories made here

The Alpinegarten on South Garfield across from the Weingarten prides itself on doing things a little bit different. The venue is smaller than the Weingarten or Biergarten and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The entertainers do a great job of interacting with the crowd. Learn to do the Chicken Dance, join in the songs, or step onto the dance floor. The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. This is the place to try a great beer, both from the Northwest and Germany. The Oregon Garden Resort is the sponsor of the Alpinegarten. The Alpinegarten is a WiFi hot spot! Mt. Whether you want to be inside near the stage at one of the classic Oktoberfest tables sitting or out under the tent, there is easy access to food and beverage and music! The Weingarten is a Wi-Fi hot spot. pFriem Oktoberfest $7 ABV 6.1% IBU 22 Our easy-drinking tribute to Munich’s Oktoberfest. Our HERITAGE

The Glockenspiel Story Look up and take a tour through time. Four times a day what may be the nation’s tallest musical animated Glockenspiel, located in the heart of Mount Angel, springs into action. At 11 a.m., 1, 4, and 7 p.m. the bells toll, the music begins, and the seven beautifully carved figures begin their journey, sharing the history of the area. For Oktoberfest it runs on the hour! The Kalapuya Brave was one of many natives who climbed the butte (Abbey Hill) to pray, at what they called “Tapalamaho” or “dwelling place of the Great Spirit”.

Robert and Katrina Zollner, two of the earliest settlers, arrived here in 1867 with eight other German families. They are ancestors of the festival’s Z-Musikmakers, famous for their performances during the festival. Mathias Butsch arrived in 1878. Dubbed “the father of Mount Angel,” he was instrumental in building the first church, railroad station and general store and invited the Benedictine Monks to establish a monastery here. Prior Adelhelm Odermatt arrived in 1881. He came from Engleberg, Switzerland, and suggested the town be called “Mount Angel”, the English meaning of Engleberg. Sister Bernardine Wachter came in 1882 from the Swiss Convent of Maria Rickenback. She was the first Prioress of the Benedictine Convent. The Queen of Angels Monestary is three blocks from downtown. Map page 39. Papa Oom-Pah, with his rosy cheeks and big tuba, became the logo for Mount Angel‘s Oktoberfest, first formed in 1966. The children are the finale, as they swing forward to sing Edelweiss. They truly are our future!

Our HERITAGE Our HERITAGE

Webertanz The Webertanz or traditional maypole dance, has been an important part of Mount Angel Oktoberfest for more than 30 years. School children open the festival at the Village Bandstand each day. They are followed by the boys in their light-hearted, athletic dances.

Jim Kinghorn

The dancing adds to Oktoberfest by including the youngest to the oldest members of our community. The dancers are an integral part of making Mount Angel Oktoberfest a folk festival. They are a symbol of the town coming together to make Oktoberfest great. The girls wear das dirndl (dirn’d’l), and the boys die lederhosen (lay’-dar-hoe-zen), which originated in the European Alps. Das Dirndl or peasant dress is a three-piece outfit: a jumper-like dress with the bodice, a white lace-trimmed blouse and a lacy apron. The embroidery on the men’s pants or lederhosen usually reflects hunting themes. The men’s outfit may have suspenders called hosentraeger.

Our HERITAGE

Die Früchtsäule “Meet me at The Harvest Monument!” - That’s a familiar request as festival-goers head off in different directions to find their favorite treats from the little food booth chalets lining the streets. Surrounded by benches, it’s a convenient place to rest if you have to wait for the rest of your party. Located in the center of Mount Angel’s downtown at the intersection of Charles and Garfield streets, it’s also a terrific place for watching the carved figures turn as the Glockenspiel chime the hour. Die Früchtsäule, or Harvest Monument, is directly across from the Information Booth. There you can pick up a program or report lost or found items. The Havest Monument has been designed by Philis Schmidt every year since 2002. The monolith at the center of village is decorated with beans, seeds, herbs and grains. She paints on plywood, then covers pictures with nature’s bounty. Many of the panels from previous years are on display in the Alpinegarten.

Let’s Celebrate Oktoberfest! (We’ll bring the spätzle if you bring the lederhosen) Enjoy deliciously authentic German food and drinks! — Schnitzel, bratwurst, Bavarian pretzels, & more — Be first in line to join our Glockenstein Club. Oktoberfest Has Amazing Volunteers Marlene Miesner has performed at every Mount Angel Oktoberfest – 56 years of sharing her talents with festival-goers! Marlene has played with a variety of bands throughout the early years on the Bandstand and in the venues. When the Prostgarten was added she was approached to help find accordion players to provide entertainment. As a member of the Rose City Accordion Club she enlisted club members and their friends. When the Hopfengarten was added she found more friends to help out! In 2020, Marlene played during the food pick up times for our year of a “virtual festival” due to the Covid-19 virus. She didn’t want to miss a year! She doesn’t miss a beat! Thank you, Marlene!

Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for over 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world. All the beers from Germany sold at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality! Mount Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors.

We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver. Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival in the Alpinegarten, Biergarten and Weingarten. Designated Drivers pledge not to drink alcoholic beverages while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks. All participants must be 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. GET A SAFE RIDE HOME – If you do drink and find that you have passed the point where you can safely drive home, take advantage of onsite taxis and have a safe ride home. Know your limit and DON’T DRINK and DRIVE.

Sponsors Make Oktoberfest Possible The Mount Angel Oktoberfest is an incredible community effort. Over 7,500 volunteers make it happen under the direction of a 19-member volunteer board of directors. A major part of the festival’s success comes from the support given by the region’s business community. Without their direct financial contributions and in-kind offerings the festival could not continue. This year we welcome three new sponsors: Ingelhoffer has been a supporter, sponsor, and attendee of the Oktoberfest for the last couple of years. Their award-winning mustards and sauces are the perfect pairing with our German-style brauts and sausages. We thank them for their sponsorship and continued support of this event. Bark Boys has provided top-notch landscaping supplies for commercial and residential needs since 1978. Oktoberfest was pleased to have them as a sponsor this year. You can see their good work at the Biergarten/ Festhalle grounds. Thank you Bark Boys! Small Town Pediatrics located in Silverton is also a new sponsor for the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. They are helping to provide family friendly spaces at the festival for those families with young children and babies. Their sponsorship helps to provide a private, comfortable space for breastfeeding moms and essential supplies for diaper changes and the much-needed group effort “potty breaks”. They look forward to becoming a long-time sponsor/partner with the event. Chacalaca Design helped to upgrade our web page, Oktoberfest. org. Bill’s work improved the mobile friendliness of the page and he troubleshoots our concerns. Visit Mount Angel Oktoberfest at www.oktoberfest.org to see his handiwork. K & E Excavating supports our families in the Kindergarten area by providing funding for the Performance Pavilion. Great shows available for all! K&E Excavating, Inc. has been providing excavating and construction services since 1998. Family owned and operated, they take pride in their work and stay determined to provide the best service possible. They understand that their success depends on their employees, and they firmly maintain that they have the best. Bi-Mart supports Oktoberfest by helping us get the word out. Bi-Mart is “part of the neighborhood”, and they have served generations of Northwest families with honest values for decades. Bi-Mart has a long history of giving back to their communities and Oktoberfest is pleased to be a recipient of their assistance. Mt. Angel Vitamins is a local premium vitamin and supplement line that is sold on Amazon and at retailers all over the U.S. Their products are manufactured right here in Mt. Angel, Oregon! They sponsor the Hopfengarten, which is located right outside their front door. Relax with your friends and family

courtesy of their generosity. Papé Machinery helps Oktoberfest work and play! Papé provides the John Deere tractors to move the people movers and a fleet of John Deere gators to control and support festival operations. “Papé keeps you moving.” This support allow for easy access during the festival. What a wonderful gift! Papé supplied the Pedal Tractors necessary for the Pedal Tractor Race on Kick-Off Saturday. It’s a fun tradition, and always good for a laugh! Les Schwab Tire Stores in the mid-valley come together to help sponsor the People Movers. Their generous donation allows Mount Angel to operate the shuttles for festival-goers. The constant movement of these trolleys takes attendees to parking, St. Mary Church and downtown. They also provide Oktoberfest sponsorship of the Saluting Our Armed Forces Day, helping to reduce the cost of admission for our veterans and service men and women. US Bank and its Mount Angel Branch are one of Oktoberfest’s oldest sponsors. US Bank has provided sponsorship to Oktoberfest since its very first festival in 1966. The bank sponsors the Mount Angel Dance Troupe; the young people of Mount Angel who perform each day at the Bandstand, including the Webertanz and the Engelberg Dancers. Thank you, US Bank. The Pepsi Beverages Company provides major funding in support of the festival’s downtown and non-profit booths operations. Pepsi Cola is the soft drink of choice at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. Their beverages offer a great selection of refreshing thirst-quenchers. Complete Wireless Solutions of Salem provides a wireless communications solution for the festival. The state-of-the-art digital integrated system is used for crowd and traffic control, coordination of entertainment, the movement of supplies among the food booths and the arts and craft show, and overall festival security. Herc Rental of Salem provides the festival with forklifts, scissor lifts and other essential equipment used for set-up and tear down, security lighting for our parking lots and emergency power generation equipment. Herc Rental is a big part of the reason the festival goes up in a day and comes down in a day. 1859 Oregon’s Magazine Oregon’s Magazine is our advertising sponsor, helping us reach the entire state of Oregon.
