OKTOBERFEST 2017 TIPS Die Früchtsäule: Meet Me at The Harvest Monument For many Mount Angel Oktoberfest-goers the place to meet is at die Früchtsäule, the Harvest Monument. Designed by Philis Schmidt every year since 2002, the monolith at the center of village is decorated with beans, seeds, herbs and grains. She paints on plywood, then covers pictures with nature’s bounty. If your party gets separated, it’s a great place to reunite.

Trolley, peoplemovers and free wheelchairs are at your service Need a little transportation help? The Silver Trolley runs from Silverton to Mount Angel Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pick up and drop-off at the lot between Seven Brides and Roth’s in Silverton, and Garfield Street by the Biergarten in Mount Angel. Shuttles every 20 minutes Friday 12 - 8 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. In addition, there are four new peoplemovers to bring folks in from outer parking lots thanks to the Chemeketa CTE welding program and business partners. See the map on page 25 for routes. There are free handicap parking lots. Display your DMV Handicap card and follow the directions of our traffic control people. Need additional assistance? The Providence Benedictine Elder Care Station is across from the bandstand. The Elder Care Station has free wheelchairs available. All venues are wheelchair accessible.

Friday Salute to Armed Forces

Mount Angel Oktoberfest and Les Schwab Tires want to say thank you to all who have served or are currently serving in our military. We appreciate the sacrifices you have made to help protect our nation. On Friday, thanks to sponsorship from mid-valley Les Schwab stores, Oktoberfest is extending to all current and former military personnel a $2 discount on venue admission. The Marion County Citizen’s Band performances at the Village Bandstand will be a patriotic salute.

The Passport is back and so, so easy A $10 ticket could be your “passport” to Germany. The grand prize winner gets 2 tickets to fly anywhere in Germany that Lufthansa flies from Seattle and $300 toward expenses. The second prize is two 2017 beer steins and two all-festival passes to the 2018 festival. The third prize is two 2017 wine glasses and two day passes to the 2018 festival. Tickets available at any admission gate, the drawing will be held Sunday at 6 pm in the Weingarten. Need not be present to win.

Alpinegarten A place for the family

The Alpinegarten on South Garfield across from the Weingarten prides itself on doing things a little bit different. Learn to do the Chicken Dance, join in the songs, take part in the contests. The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. If you are a beer geek, this is the place to try a great beer, both from the Northwest and Germany. Mount Angel is in an important hops-growing region and hops are a key ingredient for brewers. Performers include the Gruber Family Bavarian Band, sponsored by NW Natural, Oberkrainer Juhej, and The Gordonaires European Musik. The venue is smaller than the Weingarten or Biergarten and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The entertainers do a great job of interacting with the crowd.

all over in the Alpinegarten. Most come because it is so much fun and there is good food and music. Some come to the Alpinegarten for its craft beers, while others come to dance on the parquet floor.

Weingarten

There’s a party going on Take a look at the picture... The crowd is on its feet, clapping and smiling, the musicians are off the stage and on the tables... What’s this? Weingarten fans know it can only be the “Donaumusikanten.” The band has been performing at Oktoberfest more than 20 years. They were formed to specifically meet the needs of Oktoberfest for an authentic Bavarian Band. Every year or so, one or two members swap out, which keeps the group fresh and exciting. They have made the Weingarten a showcase of Bavarian folk culture. The band returns to Oregon from banks of Germany’s beautiful blue Danube River courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. The Weingarten is also the place to hear Mount Angel’s own Z Musikmakers — a zany mix of talented family and friends who have delighted Oktoberfest audiences, young and old, since the group’s founding in 1977 by Mount Angel’s own Paul Zollner. It’s a Wi-Fi hot spot.

More than 80 artisans and crafters feature offerings each year. They display their wares downtown on the north end of the festival. You’ll find everything from wooden toys to fine art. Handcrafted pottery, jewelry, painted and knitted clothing, greeting cards, hand puppets, dried flower arrangements, quilts, calligraphy, stained glass, and more await. Specialty crafts include Dutch lace, hand-painted Ukrainian eggs, Bavarian dried flower hair bands

and glassblowen figurines. The monks of Mount Angel Abbey present their handcrafted candles and their own “Abtei” soaps. The flower baskets and twinkling white lights add a charm to the booths, which are open all four days of the festival.

They have appeal for fans of bluegrass, singer-songwriter, Americana, country, and gospel.

DIE SCHLAUBERGER

Festival-goers across the nation have a love affair going on with America’s number one German Band, die Schlauberger. This band is a powerhouse of

musical expertise and expends enough energy to light up energetic Oktoberfest crowds. From the moment they step on stage until they have wrung the final note, die Schlauberger has the audience up and dancing.

DONAUMUSIKANTEN

The “Original Donaumusikanten” band has been performing at Oktoberfest more than 20 years. They were formed to meet the needs of Oktoberfest for an authentic Bavarian Band. Every year or so, one or two band members swap out, which has kept the band fresh and exciting. They have made the Weingarten a show case of Bavarian folk culture. The band returns to Oregon from banks of Germany’s beautiful Blue Danube River, in Bavaria, courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. They come to Mount Angel as a part of a cultural exchange program with the Federal Republic of Germany. They are volunteers!

EUROPEAN TAKE-OUT BAND

The European Take-Out Band has grown from German, Slovenian, and Norwegian roots. Members have been entertaining audiences for several years. Bobbie on accordion, Roxi sings, Hal plays the bass guitar and PapaJohn is their drummer. Terry is band leader on the accordion.

GORDANAIRS

The Gordanairs European Musik returns to Mount Angel from Vancouver, B.C. The groups was created by brothers Gordon and Danny Groening. The Gordanairs play at all major Oktoberfests in the Northwest and are well received not only for their Bavarian European Musical style, but as well, for their entertaining performances.

GRUBER FAMILY BAND The Gruber Family Band has been playing music for a long time. The family music history goes back to the 1900s. Five generations later, the Gruber Family Band is keeping the tradition alive. Al Gruber brought the family band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest more than 20 years ago. When he retired, his grandson Michael, took over the job of playing the piano accordion, along with the button box. Toni and Peter continued on sax and the drums and the newest addition to the band is Martin, Toni’s son. Martin plays piano, sax and clarinet and loves to sing.

LIEDERKREIS!

The Liederkreis started in 1996 as a small group of friends who

liked to sing German songs and have fun. Now, quite a few years later we still sing and have lots of fun together. However, the number of our singers has grown considerably. Each spring and Christmas the Liederkreis performs in at least one public concert in Portland, and we also sing at several ethnic festivals and benefits, bringing our concert program to many very appreciative audiences.

SALZBURGER ECHO

Hang on to your Lederhosen, the Salzburger Echo is not your ordinary German band. Performing in the styles of German, Austrian and Swiss musicians, as well as their own brand of fun, they bring an energy and flair not often seen in North America. Their 12-foot Swiss

Alphorns, Austrian cowbells and harmony yodeling brings audiences face to face with European culture. Since their beginning in 1993 they have toured the U.S. and Europe.

S-BAHN

S-Bahn is the commuter train that connects cities in Germany with the suburbs. The S-Bahn connects people. Singer and accordionist Richard Tyce founded the S-Bahn in Vancouver in the 1990s. The band includes Bruce Henczel – drums, marimba, viola, vocals; Alexander Flock – guitar and vocals; and Jim Hopson – trombone, tuba, alphorn, bass guitar and vocals. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, the S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).

Our HERITAGE

Glockenspiel Helps Share Our Story Each year for 52 years, Mount Angel has celebrated its German heritage in a special way with its annual Oktoberfest. This small agricultural community, about 20 miles north of Salem, has a rich history stretching back to the “Old World.” The first European and American settlers appeared in this area in the 1850s. They discovered this land was more than just picturesque – it had a rich fertile soil where they could raise their crops. Settlers began to arrive in multitudes, swarming to the community as the word spread of the advantages of living here. It was reported in 1868, that one farmer grew wheat as high as seven feet tall. A group of German Catholic settlers began to influence the community in 1867. The first to arrive was Robert Zollner and his family (forebearers of the Zollners in Z Musikmakers). They settled near a creek on a hilly section of land just north of Mount Angel. The creek to this day bears his name.

of Benedictine Monks from Engelberg. Four different names for the town within a threeyear period indicate how fast events were moving between 1880 and 1883. Railroad crews named the place Fillmore. Within a few months a post office was established giving the community the name of Roy. On July 12, 1881, George Settlemeier, who owned the land on both sides of the track, platted a town of 75 lots and called his town Frankford. On Sept. 20, 1882, Benjamin Cleaver, the postmaster, purchased Settlemeier’s town for $480 and changed the name back to Roy. On Nov. 16, 1881, Father Adelhelm told the Archbishop of Oregon City that he had chosen “the butte near Fillmore” as the new home for the Oregon Benedictines. That same day, the Archbishop appointed Adelhelm pastor of Fillmore, Gervais and Sublimity. Father Adelhelm approached Postmaster Cleaver and asked him to change his new town’s name to Mount Angel, the anglicized name of the Benedictine Monk’s Swiss home at Engelberg. Cleaver agreed.

The Glockenspiel figures tell the Mathias Butsch was history of Mount Angel with the so impressed with Zollners, right, Mathias Butsch, top what he found here and Fr. Adelhelm Odermatt, above. that he advertised the advantages of the area in two Midwestern German language newspapers. With the arrival of Butsch, the Catholic community found their leader and Mount Angel its true “founder.” It wasn’t long before the German language became commonplace in and around the settlement.

Rapidly the town developed its own unique character. On Nov. 9, 1886, the Benedictine Sisters purchased 23 acres of land in Mount Angel for their community. In July they laid the cornerstone for the first brick building in the community. The arrival of the monks and sisters had a profound impact on Mount Angel and the whole state of Oregon. The town was not only developing into an important agricultural center but also a center of learning and culture.

These early German Catholic settlers at first attended church more than nine miles away in Saint Louis, at times traveling on foot. At that time Mount Angel was not even a respectable crossroads. About 1880 two events coincided to ensure Mount Angel’s survival as a community. The railroad was completed on Oct. 4, 1880. The small band of Catholic families built a church that was completed in 1881, just a few months before the arrival of Father Adelhelm Odermatt who was looking for a place to establish an American home for his Swiss Community

The people of Mount Angel are delighted to share their heritage with you!

Mount Angel became an incorporated town on April 3, 1893 and a city in 1905. This small settlement started by nine German families has grown into a charming north Willamette Valley community of almost 4,000 people. It is well known for its prestigious Benedictine abbey, seminary, Benedictine Sisters monastery and home of its famous “Old World style” Oktoberfest.

Sponsors Support Community Efforts The Mount Angel Oktoberfest is an incredible community effort. Over 7,500 volunteers make it happen under the direction of a 19 member volunteer Board of Directors. A major part of the festival’s success comes from the support of the region’s business community; without their direct financial contributions and in-kind offerings, the festival could not continue. Papé Machinery helps Oktoberfest work and play. Papé provides the John Deere tractors to move the peoplemovers and a fleet of John Deere gators to control and support festival operations. They keep everyone in motion. Papé supplied the Pedal Tractors for the Pedal Tractor Race on Kick-Off Saturday, a fun tradition! Les Schwab Tire Stores in the mid-valley come together to help sponsor the peoplemovers. Their generous donation allows operation of the shuttles, taking attendees to parking, the church, and downtown. They also sponsor Saluting Our Armed Forces Day, reducing admission cost for veterans and service men and women. US Bank and its Mount Angel Branch help Oktoberfest spread the word about this great festival by financing a major portion of the festival brochure printing costs. US Bank has provided this service to Oktoberfest since the first festival in 1966. The bank also sponsors the youth sports during the festival, which this year includes a 5th and 6th grade football game on Saturday morning. The Pepsi Beverages Co. provides major funding in support of the festival’s downtown and non-profit booth operations. Pepsi Cola is the soft drink of choice at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. Complete Wireless Solutions of Salem provides a wireless, state-ofthe-art digital integrated system used for crowd and traffic control,

coordination of entertainment, movement of supplies among the booths, and for overall festival security. Herc Rental of Salem provides the festival with forklifts, scissor lifts and other equipment used for set-up and tear down, security lighting for parking lots and emergency power generation. Herc is a big part of the reason the festival goes up in a day, and comes down in a day. Mark E. Carter – UX Developer + Design helped guide the construction of the website for Oktoberfest.org. Mark keeps the site running smoothly and acts as an advisor to Oktoberfest on site content. Visit Mount Angel Oktoberfest at www.oktoberfest.org. McDonald Wholesale has a reputation for foodservice distribution excellence in the Northwest. The principals of honesty, integrity and reliability on which the company was built are still reinforced today. McDonald Wholesale supports Mount Angel Oktoberfest and the non-profit food booths in the downtown area. They set up a commissary to help food booths manage their supplies. 1859 Oregon’s Magazine is our advertising sponsor, helping us reach the entire state of Oregon. 1859 explores the landscapes, personalities, movers and shakers, history and architecture that is the jewel of the Pacific Northwest. 1859 presents the state’s rich history, it’s incredible destinations and colorful personalities. PGE also provides the Mad Science in the Kindergarten Performance Pavilion. The Oregon Garden Resort is the sponsor of the family Alpinegarten. Resort operations manager, Christine Diacetis expressed her excitement when she stated “We are truly proud to be a part of this wonderful family event. We know the visitors to Oktoberfest will love the interactive music in the Alpinegarten and they will surely enjoy their stay with us and a visit to The Oregon Garden.” The Oregon Garden Resort is where many band members stay during the festival. Mt. Angel Sausage Co. provides funding for the festival’s designated driver program. It is Mount Angel’s own European-style sausage maker. They are open year-round to enjoy Oktoberfest-like atmosphere and great sausage and beverages. Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy a beer and sausage on their deck. Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation

The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for almost 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world. All the beers from Germany sold at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot

(Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality! Mount Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors. We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and

use a designated driver. Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival. Designated Drivers pledge not to drink alcoholic beverages while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks.
