Willkommen! • The ENTERTAINERS Use your Oktoberfest program schedule to ensure you find the bands you love and the beverages you prefer. A sampling of the changes: Z-Musikmakers will be in the Biergarten this year; no Weingarten performances. Find them in their new venue and settle in for good times. Chardon Polka Band will play in the Weingarten and S-Band will play the Alpinegarten. Andechs biers have moved to the Alpinegarten from the Prostgarten, where you’ll find new Oregon beers. Weihenstephan and pFriem biers have moved from the Alpinegarten across the street to the Weingarten. Keep your Oktoberfest program handy or use a smart phone to click on Oktoberfest.org for more.

New for 2019 – Klaberheads Every year Oktoberfest brings new faces as children join in the Webertanz at the Bandstand, learning the traditional folk dances and sharing them – part of the joy of being together. There will be new faces on the stage, too, as Hamilton, Ohio sends Mount Angel its longest running band – The Klaberheads. Of course, the group didn’t start out with that name. Jim Kinghorn
Things have moved a bit...
The original Franz Klaber Orchestra was founded in 1930 and led by Franz Klaber, a German immigrant from the Saxony region of Germany. He taught himself to play mandolin and violin, and later, the saxophone. The first version of the Franz Klaber Orchestra consisted of a five piece band of fellow German-Americans that played a lot of German folk songs at gatherings and festivals of the Deutscher Hausverein, the local German Society. Franz Sr.’s vision was a band that mixed popular music with traditional German songs. Franz’s daughter Mary Ann sang in the band, and Bill and Franz Klaber, Jr. both joined the band while they were in junior high school. At the age of 24, Mt. Angel Oktoberfest
Franz took over the band when his father died in 1963. Franz Jr. took his father’s musical passion and built upon it; leaving his own indelible mark by expanding the band, its repertoire, and instilling an enthusiasm and showmanship. Under his leadership, the band affectionately became known as the Klaberheads. It’s a name that is used for the band as well as the fans! In 2006 his daughter, Erika Klaber took over the reins. Erika has continued with her father and grandfather’s vision, and has put her own imprint on the group, playing a steel drum in the band. No one could have imagined how well this beautiful instrument would blend with German music! With a Masters degree in Music Education and Ethnomusicology, Erika has been able to expand the musical repertoire. The fourth generation of Klabers are joining in. Erika’s daughter, Emily Muench, performs with the band, and several of Franz’s and Bill’s children and grandchildren have been active members. Mt. Angel Shopper

Willkommen! • The ENTERTAINERS
Returning Favorites – See schedule for times CHARDON POLKA BAND – The “punks of polka”
from Ohio return to Mount Angel after a terrific debut in 2017. Their up beat music and great fun old favorites are delivered in a not so traditional style as polkas sometimes “morph.” Comedic oddball favorites and bizarre audience participation songs are to be expected!
DIE SCHLAUBERGER – Festival-goers love this power-
house of musical expertise. From the moment they step on stage they have the audience dancing to renditions of German favorites and other crowd pleasing tunes. Their mission is “Keeping the Traditionalists on their Feet and the New Generation Interested.” Die Schlauberger (dSb for those who have difficulty with German) means the “Wise Guys” (kind of).
DONAUMUSIKANTEN – The “Original Donau-
musikanten” band was formed to meet the needs of Oktoberfest for an authentic Bavarian Band. The band returns to Oregon from banks of Germany’s beautiful Blue Danube River, courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest.
DOPPELBOCK – A last-minute replacement band for the
Leavenworth Oktoberfest turned into a favorite of Oktoberfest audiences throughout Oregon and Washington. Blending the traditional German/Polka/Yodeling with rock and roll roots, they created what some call Polka Rock. Their goal is to boldly go where no accordion has gone before.
FESTIVAL BRASS– Big and brassy, these wonderful musicians entertain at The Village Bandstand as well as rotating 6 • Sept. 11, 2019
through the Alpinegarten, Weingarten and Biergarten.
GRUBER FAMILY BAND – Their family music history
goes back to the 1900s. Five generations later, Al Gruber brought the band to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. When he retired, grandson Michael took over the piano accordion!
SALZBURGER ECHO – The 12-foot Swiss Alphorns,
Austrian cowbells and harmony yodeling bring audiences face to face with European culture.
S-BAHN – S-Bahn is the commuter train that connects
cities in Germany with the suburbs. The S-Bahn band connects people. With a diverse and eclectic repertoire, S-Bahn specializes in Oktoberfests (German) and Malankas (Ukranian).
THE GORDANAIRS – Returning from Vancouver B.C.
The Gordanairs bring Bavarian European musical style to Mount Angel. They treat audiences to German traditions such as folk dancing (Schuhplattling), songs played on the cowbells, alphorn performances and their always popular audience participation favorites.
Z MUSIKMAKERS – This is a zany mix of musically
talented family and friends who have delighted Oktoberfest audiences since the group’s founding in 1977 by Mount Angel’s own Paul Zollner. They present a festive mix of traditional and Bavarian-flavored music.

The Alpinegarten is open to families with children until closing each night. If you are a beer geek, this is the place to try a great beer, both from the Northwest and Germany. The Gruber Family Bavarian Band, Gordonairs European Musik, Salzberger Echo, Doppelbock and S-Bahn entertain. The venue is smaller than the Weingarten or Biergarten and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. The entertainers do a great job of interacting with the crowd. The crowd is on its feet, clapping and smiling, the musicians are off the stage and on the tables... What’s this? Weingarten fans know it can only be the “Donaumusikanten” from Germany. The band has been performing at Oktoberfest more than 20 years. Every year one or two members swap out, which keeps the group fresh. They have made the Weingarten a showcase of Bavarian folk culture. The band visits courtesy of Lufthansa, the official airline of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. pFriem Marzen Oktoberfest ABV 6.2% IBU 22 6 Tokens Our easy-drinking tribute to Munich’s Oktoberfest. Activities, Entertainment and Fun!
Oktoberfest in Mount Angel has entertainment for the whole family. For the young folk, there is a whole day’s worth of free fun and entertainment in the Kindergarten. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., the Kindergarten has lots of activities for the young (and not so young) crowd. The Petting Farm sponsored by Wilco is staffed by members of a local 4-H Club, the animals are well attended and avail18 • Sept. 11, 2019
able for petting and feeding.
There’s also a hay maze and things to climb and bounce on. Do not miss the ever-popular Wiener Dog races which start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. In the pavilion, magic and family-friendly juggling take center stage. There is also some “Mad Science” coutesy of PGE. It’s enough to keep parents and kids occupied all afternoon. When hungry, there is

lots of reasonably priced food that can be purchased from the goody booth in the Kindergarten area. The Kindergarten is located in the St. Mary’s Public School play yard across the street from the church. Webertanz (May Pole Dance) and other Bavarian folk dances are performed each day at 12:15 at the Bandstand. After their show they invite kids from the crowd to join them in the famous Chicken Dance. Our HERITAGE
Glockenspiel Shares Story of Our Town It’s not every where you can look up and take a tour through time. Four times a day what may be the nation’s tallest musical animated Glockenspiel, located in the heart of the village, springs into action. At 11 a.m., 1, 4, and 7 p.m. the bells toll, the music begins, and the seven beautifully carved figures begin their journey, sharing the history of the area. For Oktoberfest it will run on the hour!
The Kalapuya Brave was one of many natives who climbed the butte (Abbey Hill) to pray, at what they called “Tapalamaho” or “dwelling place of the Great Spirit”. Robert and Katrina Zollner, two of the earliest settlers, arrived here in 1867 with eight other German families. They are ancestors of the festival’s Z-Musikmakers, famous for their performances during the festival. Mathias Butsch arrived in 1878. Dubbed “the father of Mount
Angel,” he was instrumental in building the first church, railroad station, and general store and invited the Benedictine Monks to establish a monastery here.
Prior Adelhelm Odermatt arrived in 1881. He came from Engleberg , Switzerland, and suggested the town be called “Mount Angel”, the English meaning of Engleberg.
Sister Bernardine Wachter came in 1882 from the Swiss Convent of Maria Rickenback. She was the first Prioress of the Benedictine Convent. The Queen of Angels Monestary is three blocks from downtown, see the Heritage Trail map on page 38. Papa Oom-Pah, with his rosy cheeks and big tuba, became the logo for Mount Angel‘s Oktoberfest, first formed in 1966. The children are the finale, as they swing forward to sing Edelweiss. They truly are our future!

Webertanz The Webertanz or traditional maypole dance, has been an important part of Mount Angel Oktoberfest for more than 30 years. School children open the festival at the Village Bandstand each day. They are followed by the traditional mother-daughter dances and the boys in their light-hearted, athletic dances. The dancing adds to Oktoberfest by including the youngest to the oldest members of our community. The dancers are an integral part of making Mount Angel Oktoberfest a folk festival. They are a symbol of the town coming together to make Oktoberfest great.

The girls wear das dirndl (dirn’d’l), and the boys die lederhosen (lay’-dar-hoe-zen), which originated in the European Alps. Das Dirndl or peasant dress is a three-piece outfit: a jumper-like dress with the bodice, a white lace-trimmed blouse and a lacy apron. The embroidery on the men’s pants or lederhosen usually reflects hunting themes. The men’s outfit may have suspenders called hosentraeger.

Hi there, Silverton! We’re new here! But we’re not new to Real Estate. Bella Casa Real Estate Group launched just a few towns away, in McMinnville, Oregon, in March 2007 with the goal of being a different kind of brokerage. We are a professional cooperative and we invite you to find out more about us by visiting our website! We’re also not new to Silverton. Our agents have been serving in this community for many years! We invite you to connect (or reconnect) with them next time you are thinking about buying or selling a home.
So... the only way that we are technically new here is that we are opening an office in this great town. We look forward to having you stop by and we are thrilled to be (sort of) new here.

Oktoberfest Encourages Moderation The highly quaffable beers of Bavaria are brewed according to a law that has been in effect for almost 500 years. The Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, enacted by Duke Wilhelm IV, is still in force today, making it the oldest consumer protection law in the world. All the beers from Germany sold at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest are still brewed in accordance with Das Bayrische Reinheitgebot (Bavarian Purity Law). No wonder these beers are of superior quality! Mount Angel Oktoberfest and its distributors encourage everyone to drink responsibly. The fine beverages and wines at our festival are best consumed in moderation and savored for their unique flavors. We applaud festival goers who drink responsibly and use a designated driver. Patrons not consuming alcohol have the opportunity to sign up as an official Designated Driver from 5 p.m. until closing each day of the festival. Designated Drivers pledge not to drink alcoholic beverages while at the festival and to provide safe transportation for their friends in the group. All Designated Drivers receive a wristband and soft drinks. All participants must be 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. GET A SAFE RIDE HOME – If you do drink and find that you have passed the point where you can safely drive home, take advantage of onsite taxis and have a safe ride home. Know your limit and DON’T DRINK and DRIVE.

Sponsors Make Oktoberfest Special The Mount Angel Oktoberfest is an incredible community effort. Over 7,500 volunteers make it happen under the direction of a 19 member volunteer board of directors. A major part of the festival’s success comes from the support of the business community; without their financial contributions and in-kind offerings, it could not continue. This year Mount Angel Oktoberfest welcomed 4 new sponsors: Louisiana Grills is sponsoring the Bandstand. During Oktoberfest they will unveil their latest collection of wood-pellet grills, the Founders Series. It represents the work of Mount Angel’s Joe Traeger, founder of the original pellet grill, and Dan Thiessen, an accomplished innovator in the pellet grill industry. The Founders Series comes equipped with Smart Touch™ control pad with WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity. You can enjoy a backyard party and control your grill’s temperature with precision and ease, right from your mobile device! Chacalaca Design helped upgrade our web page. Bill’s work improved the mobile friendliness of the page and he troubleshoots concerns. Visit Mount Angel Oktoberfest at www.oktoberfest.org to see his handiwork. K & E Excavating is supporting our families in the Kindergarten area by providing funding for the Performance Pavilion. They have been meeting excavating and construction needs since 1998. Family owned and operated, they take pride in their work and are determined to provide the best service possible. K & E Excavating understands that success is dependent on employees and they firmly maintain that they have the best.
being “part of the neighborhood” they have served generations of Northwest families with honest values. Bi-Mart has a long history of giving back to their communities and Oktoberfest is pleased to be a recipient of their assistance. Mt. Angel Vitamins is a local premium vitamin and supplement line that is sold on Amazon.com and at retailers all over the US. It is headquartered right here in Mt. Angel, Oregon. They sponsor the Hopfengarten, which is located right out their front door. Relax with your friends and family courtesy of their generosity. Papé Machinery helps Oktoberfest work and play! Papé provides the John Deere tractors to move the people movers and a fleet of John Deere gators to control and support festival operations. They keep everyone in motion. Papé supplied the Pedal Tractors for the Pedal Tractor Race on Kick-Off Saturday, always good for a laugh! Les Schwab Tire Stores in the mid-valley come together to help sponsor our People Movers. Their generous donation allows Mount Angel to operate the shuttles. The constant movement of these trolleys takes attendees to parking, the church, Abbey and downtown. They also provide sponsorship of Saluting Our Armed Forces Day, reducing cost of admission for Vets and Service men and women. US Bank and its Mount Angel Branch is one of Oktoberfest’s oldest sponsors. US Bank has provided sponsorship to Oktoberfest since its very first festival in 1966. The bank sponsors the Mount Angel Dance Troupe; the young people of Mount Angel who perform each day at the Bandstand, including the Webertanz and the Engelberg Dancers. Thank you, US Bank.
