A history of The Oregon Garden 1940s Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) explores the idea of developing a botanical garden. 1980s City of Salem contacts OAN about building a botanical display garden. 1990 The Garden is listed in OAN’s long-range plan. 1994 The newly formed Oregon Nurserymen’s Garden Foundation holds its first meeting. 1995 The site is selected in the city of Silverton. The agreement includes the development of a wetland system to recycle the city’s treated wastewater. 1997 Groundbreaking is held June 27. 1999 The J. Frank Schmidt Jr. Pavilion, Native Oak Grove and Wetlands are dedicated. 2000 The Conifer Garden, Rose Garden, Children’s Garden, Hughes Water Garden, Northwest Garden, Bosque and Chez Garden are created. 2001 Grand opening celebration is held June 29 to July 3. Silverton Market Garden is created. 2002 The Gordon House, Rediscovery Forest and National Resource Education Center open. 2003 Pet-Friendly Garden is created. 2004 Visitor Center, Sensory Garden and Honor Garden are completed. 2005 Lewis and Clark Garden created. 2006 Moonstone Garden Management begins managing the Garden. 2007 Groundbreaking ceremony for the Oregon Garden Resort is held May 1. 2008 The Oregon Garden Resort opens in October. 2012 Fire Safe House is created. 2014 The Discovery Pavilion is built in the Rediscovery Forest. 2016 The Oregon Garden celebrates its 15-year anniversary.

Specialty Gardens Silverton Market Garden Many of Oregon’s 147 agricultural products grow here, including berries, grapes, grass seed and hops. Egg-laying chickens also make their home in this garden, and produce from the garden is donated to families in need.
Children’s Garden Youngsters can dig for dinosaur bones, play in a hobbit house, enjoy the miniature train garden and marvel at our collection of weird plants.
Pet-Friendly Garden Fido will love this garden, which showcases which plants are friendly and which are toxic to pets.
Rediscovery Forest This dynamic 15-acre working forest is a collaboration of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute and The Oregon Garden. Enjoy strolling along the pathways beneath tall Douglas-fir trees, and learn about Oregon’s sustainable forests. During the holiday season, visit the forest for Christmas in the Garden – featuring light displays, an ice skating rink and a holiday market.
Sensory Garden This therapeutic garden includes plantings from around the world and is designed to activate all of your senses.
A-Mazing Water Garden Conifer Garden This garden is an American Conifer Society Reference Garden, boasting one of the largest collections of dwarf and miniature conifers in the country. Some are one-of-a-kinds collected from around the world. In partnership with the American Conifer Society, an expansion of the Conifer Garden is planned.
Wetlands
This unique garden combines wildlife habitat and treated wastewater recycling, two functions which are usually kept separate. Winner of the 2002 Honor Award for Environmental/ Sustainable Design from the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Oak Grove The 25-acre native oak grove features the 100-foot Signature Oak, a 400 year-old tree designated one of Oregon’s “Heritage Trees.”
An innovative partnership between the city of Silverton and the Garden, the Wetlands cool the city’s treated wastewater. The water travels at up to 700 gallons per minute through a series of ponds, creating a habitat for wildlife and plants.
Northwest Garden This garden’s landscape design showcases plants and trees that thrive in our region. One of our first completed gardens, this is an excellent place to gather ideas for your own landscape. The Horticulture Staff’s Favorite Plants
Spring
Ribes sanguineum Flowering Currant: A spectacular Oregon native, this beautiful early flowering shrub attracts a multitude of pollinators, including hummingbirds, to its beautiful chain of pink to magenta flowers. Magnolia stellata Star Magnolia: Early flowering and native to Japan. You can find this handsome shrubby tree located throughout the Garden and bearing fragrant, densely distributed buds in early spring before the leaves emerge.
Summer
Cynara cardunculus Cardoon: A wonderful addition to any garden. Cardoon is very closely related to artichoke and shares it’s wonderful flower form only smaller and blooms prolifically. Displayed near the Visitor Center and the Silverton Market Garden. Vitex agnus-castus Chaste Tree: Native to Central Asia, the Vitex, with it’s tall, bright and blue spikes of long lasting flowers, are not only a show stopper, but easy to grow and care for. They prefer full sun and can be found atop the Fuchsia Trial Garden and near the Visitor Center.
Fall
Tricyrtis hirta Toad Lilly: This herbaceous perennial begins blooming at the end of September and continues until frost. The spotty leaves and flowers give rise to their quirky common name. They prefer moist, well drained soil with partial sun and can be found near the Rose Garden and in the Children’s Garden. Humulus lupulus Common Hop: An important agricultural commodity here in the Willamette Valley, hops are used in the brewing process as well as in herbal medicine. Found in the Silverton Market Garden, their amazing exponential growth rate is surpassed only by the beautifully aromatic flowers or ‘cones’ they put on in the early fall.
Winter
Cornus sanguinea ‘Mid Winter Fire’ Blood Twig Dogwood: Found throughout the Garden but barely noticed until after a hard freeze, this particular cultivar possesses bright yellow/orange stems that transition to a bold red at the tips. We recommend pruning them only in the early spring once the leaves begin to emerge, enhancing their spectacular winter display.
www.oregongarden.org
Sarcococca confuse Sweet Box: By far the most beautifully aromatic plant in the Garden. You will find this dense, low growing, evergreen shrub bordering the Children’s Garden as well as along the walkway in the Sensory Garden. Small white flowers emerge in mid-January and continue through February.
