Taking action

By Peggy Savage Activism – and particularly student activism – has been in the news a lot recently.

Pro-life student Marcos Sanchez, 17, took action to put his cause in the spotlight April 11. He stood alone in front of John F. Kennedy High School in Mount Angel after walking out of school to protest abortion.

He didn’t stand alone for long, however.

Sanchez was joined by his mother and members of a family who had come to show their support for the cause.

After Sanchez walked out the front doors of the school at precisely 10 a.m. he stood on the sidewalk on East Marquam Street.

He was joined by his mother, Angela, and Michelle Valladares and her children, Isabel, 14, Maria, 11, Benjamin, 9, Sarah, 6, and two-year-old friend, Eliana.

“We are standing here for 900 seconds, to symbolize the 900 unborn babies aborted every day in the U.S.,” Sanchez said. “And

Participating in a nationwide effort to call for support of student mothers and to oppose abortion, Sanchez joined students from across the country in the Prolife Walkout.

“If athletes receive an unexcused class absence, that means they can’t participate in the day’s game, and that’s holding most athletes back from participating,” he said.

“And at JFK, a lot of students participate in sports. Also, I don’t think a lot of students want to stick their necks out. It takes some guts to stand out there and take a position on a controversial topic.

Some students are also indifferent about abortion. They don’t see that it affects them; they say they are pro-life, but they don’t take action. Being pro-life means taking action.”

“We are walking out to raise awareness of the cruel practices that happen every day through abortion,” Sanchez said. “We demand action to be taken to defund Planned Parenthood and reallocate taxpayer money to federally qualified health centers.”

A Kennedy High School senior, Sanchez is president and founder of JFK for Life. He said it is a 40-member club at the school, which has an enrollment of less than 200 students.

Sanchez said Principal Sean Aker gave permission to hold the event, but Aker reportedly said that he would neither encourage nor discourage the walkout.

Council votes to demolish Eugene Field School

The Silverton City Council has directed staff to proceed with plans for the demolition of the former Eugene Field School, which was built in 1923.

The 6-0 council vote on April 2 will pave the way for a new police station and eventually a civic center.

Former Mayor Stu Rasmussen asked the council to seek more public input on the issue – send out letters and post signs.

Mayor Kyle Palmer, however, countered that the meeting was the second opportunity for public comment, the matter had been on the agenda, and information was available on the city’s website and on social media.

Four audience members, including Silverton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stacy Palmer, spoke in favor of moving forward.

“I think, honestly, they (the public) are tired of talking about it,” she said.

“Repurposing that school for an emergency facility was not realistic,” Councilor Dana Smith said of one of the alternatives suggested.

Councilor Jim Sears predicted the public will be energized when invited to participate in the design of the new facility.

City Manager Christy Wurster said the 2018-19 budget being drafted will include funds for the demolition and added that staff will look at elements of the building that might be reused, such as the gym floor or obtaining a cast of the building’s entry columns.

Home-grown power

By Melissa Wagoner In the early part of 2018 a 12-acre solar farm began sending enough energy into the Portland General Electric grid to power 350 homes. This farm, on the west end of Pine Street in Silverton, is a movement toward more sustainable energy for local residents – a change that Elyce Brown, founder of the group Sustainable Silverton, applauds.

“Sustainable Silverton supports solar energy projects. Solar provides clean energy, energy independence, and quality local jobs,” she said. “Of course, any technology can have downsides if it is not appropriate; for example, certain tracts of land may be more or less ideal.”

The land in question, leased by Cypress Creek Renewables, a firm that develops and owns solar projects across the country, is indeed classified as high value farmland, which is why it is maxed out at the current 12 acres of panels. However, the land was previously utilized for one cutting of hay per year and Cypress Creek

“It’s already agricultural land,” ODFW Energy Coordinator Sarah Reif said.

“Cypress Creek came to us as part of their due diligence but it was all located on previously disturbed land.”

Although the impact of solar panels on this particular piece of land was minimal, Reif explained that regulations limiting the size of solar farms on agricultural land and the obligatory habitat research are important, especially in Eastern Oregon where farms tend to be much larger.

“If you place these solar panels on farms

you are choosing power over food,” she said. “If you place them on native habitat you’re choosing power over native plants and animals.”

Reif, a resident of Silverton, isn’t against solar power – just the opposite. Instead, she believes that care must be taken in order to maximize benefits and minimize negative effects.

“Relatively speaking this is where we need to go,” she said. “What I’m always advocating for is – let’s take a look at the whole state and where conflicts are most minimized.”

Amy Berg Pickett, Northwest Regional Zoning and Outreach Manager for Cypress Creek, said that solar power is not only low impact on the land on which it is placed but also as a contribution to the waste stream.

“The farms do not create any emissions or wastes,” she said. “The revegetation of the temporary disturbance is currently occurring and is comprised of native and regional grass mixes. The site will remain

previous and fallow for the life of the project. After decommissioning the land can be returned to agricultural use.”

The panels themselves, with a lifespan of more than 25 years, can be recycled, making them a relatively low environmental cost. They are also installable, not just by large solar farms like the ones Cypress Creek manages, but by private homeowners, a choice that Brown hopes more people will make.

“We are excited at all the possibilities that the clean energy revolution can provide us here in Silverton, and we feel incredibly lucky that the solutions to climate polluting dirty energy sources are win-win,” she said. “For example, by retrofitting our existing building stock for greater efficiency and locally-produced energy, we will see economic growth that is independent of population growth or loss of greenfield land area. By producing more of our own energy locally, we will be creating quality jobs, increasing the spending power of our residents, and building community resilience.”

With such program names as “GIRLS KREE-8,” “THE ART ZONE,” “Culture Jam Youth Program” and “Girls Rise Up,” DeMar’s focus has always been to enhance personal growth and empower people of all ages, especially youth.

“When I started working with kids, I wanted to be on the frontend of encouraging them to learn how to express themselves. People are vulnerable about their creative expressions.”

That sense of vulnerability extends to adults, too.

While teaching an autobiographical

art/writing course entitled “Artful Storycatching” at Portland Community College, she recalled meeting a particularly self-critical student.

She sent an e-mail saying: “I’d really like to take this course, but I’m not an artist and I’m horrible at it. I don’t know if my writing skills are that good, so maybe it’s not for me.”

DeMar encouraged the reluctant woman to sign up. The urging succeeded but for the first two weeks, her student wouldn’t share her art with the other classmates. In time, her confidence blossomed, and she was able to display her art. By the end of the course, she filled out her evaluation form, saying: “Thank you for showing me that I really am an artist. I had no idea.”

This type of personal transformation happens all the time,Carole said. “I think people just need that nudge.”

DeMar’s creative flair flows onto the design of her business cards – which are printed on the flipside of decks of playing cards: “Sometimes, people will say ‘That’s my lucky number or my favorite card.’ I just believe in the synchronicity of life,” she laughed.

Outside of the studio, she is a builder.

“To me, construction is another form of creativity – only on a much larger scale.

I also love gardening, both vegetables and flowers. I’m kind of an old farmer at heart,” she said.

I have tried dozens of granola bar recipes without success. Many of them are full of nearly as much sugar as their storebought replacements, they fall apart when I cut them, or they are tasteless and bland. Finally I have found the ultimate bar recipe and – bonus – it is gluten free, dairy free, devoid of added sugar, requires very little effort and – most importantly – they are delicious.

Line a 13 by nine inch rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a food processor pulse crust ingredients just until they are the consistency of coarse sand and just begin to clump together. Using the bottom of a measuring cup, pack the crust firmly and evenly into the bottom of the baking sheet. Now add the dates and almond extract to the food processor bowl. Pulse until the dates are in small pieces. Add the water a tablespoon at a time, pulsing until a somewhat chunky paste has been achieved. Spread over crust. Finally, add topping ingredients to the same food processor bowl and pulse

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” The eloquent quotation commonly attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt could have been written for Trish Ambrose.

In 2010, Trish and her husband, Rob, found that a dream about waterfalls would start a chain of events leading them from Pennsylvania to Silverton.

The couple, both 61, packed up their car and drove to Oregon’s “Garden City” in August 2010.

Having lived on the East Coast for over 40 years, they were happy, established – and surrounded by family and friends.

They have now been married for 39 years, have six children and five grandchildren, “with another on the way.”

“At that time, there was a tragedy that affected our family and community.

We felt the need to move. Rob found a church network that we were interested in. One of their leaders suggested we go to a conference in St. Louis, Missouri,” Trish explained. “A night or two before this conference, I had this dream. We were traveling up a mountain inside of a flying, open car -- like the one in the movie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I remember feeling frightened in the dream. I looked down and saw beautiful fir trees. Ahead of us was this high waterfall, and we sailed over it... and then I woke up.”

Two days later, they met Josiah Miller.

The lifelong Silverton resident was spending a year as an intern at the church which sponsored the conference in Missouri. After the conference concluded, an informal dinner was held at the home where Miller was staying.

“We went there and met this young man from Oregon,” Trish said. She started to ask him questions about Oregon “to be polite and out of curiosity.” She immediately perked up when he described fir trees and waterfalls in Silverton.

Putting it all together appeared seamless.

“They were looking for a new home and church community,” Miller said.

The couple flew home the next day.

While back home pondering their chance meeting with Miller -- and the dream of the waterfalls – a divine-like urging took

place. Rob recalls awakening one night, hearing the name, “Miller!”

“For me, it was strong direction that’s where God wanted us to go. I was very encouraged and excited,” he said.

“We’ve always believed that God is very real, present and involved in our lives,” Trish added.

While he marvels at the “synchronicity” that brought the couple to Silverton, Miller believes it was their determination that makes their tale unique.

“The truly interesting part of this story is that they listened and responded to the dream. I think that has drastically affected how they live their lives here. They have been very conscious and purposeful about digging their roots down deep and really giving themselves to the community.”

The friends now attend the same church.

In 2012, the couple helped organize the reception dinner for 300 guests on Josiah and Kalia Miller’s wedding day.

While her dream remains the gist of their story, Trish maintains that a pragmatic approach brought about the relocation.

They did visit Silverton before moving.

“Of course, there were other conversations we had with a variety of people, both here and back in Pennsylvania, and circumstances that needed to line up before a final decision could be made. They indeed took place, all propelled forward by that initial dream.

“Only then did we head to Oregon.”

Former Ontario Police Chief Donald E. Howes, 80, passed away on March 30, 2018, after a battle with cancer. Private service was held in Silverton on April 7, 2018, under the direction of Unger Funeral Chapel.

Don married Theresa Brophy on Nov. 21, 1959 in Burns, Oregon. They were married over 58 years. Don retired from Ontario Police Department in January 1993. He received commendations in a variety of areas but especially for his commitment to children and families, which much of his focus was around child abuse, including praise from Governor Barbara Roberts for his devotion to children. Don and his wife moved to Silverton in 1996.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert. He is survived by his wife Theresa; daughters Mylisa (Mark) Holland and Denise Totland; Five grandchildren, Jason Holland, Don (Jill) Holland, Greg (Brittnie), Holland, Nichole (Jason) Petersen and Kelsey (Danny) Cross; two sisters Dorothea Purdy and Helen Kennedy

Shiela McAllister

Born on a share cropper’s farm in Stafford County, Seward, Kansas July 12, 1932 to John Bothum and Jenny (McBride), Rex Bothum passed away at his home March 2, 2018.

His family moved to Woodburn, Oregon in 1946.

Rex attended Woodburn High School and joined the U.S. Army, serving most of his enlistment on Okinawa during the Korean War. He was discharged Dec. 12, 1952 and joined the Oregon Air National Guard and was sent to Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi for training as an Air Passenger and Operations Specialist which he completed Nov. 23, 1954 and returned to Portland Air Base.

Rex met his true love in 1959 and married Astrid Severin on Feb. 6, 1960 at St Marks Lutheran Church in Salem. They made their first home in Salem.

April 28, 1941 – March 24, 2018

Shiela McAllister, 76. of Molalla, Oregon died March 24, 2018 at her home. Shiela was born in Oregon and spent the bulk of her life near Molalla.

She was the oldest daughter of Evine and Walter Ellison. Shiela was a graduate of Molalla High School, and attended Concordia Portland, as well as what was then known as Western Business School where she received a degree. She worked for many Oregon firms throughout her career, spending most of her work life at Willamette Egg Farms.

Shiela was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, and was active in many church activities and events over the years.

In addition to frequent trips to the beach,

Shiela loved the whimsical and fun. Like her mother, she was a gracious giver of gifts and served up hospitality. The coffee pot was always on, and a snack was always to be had at her home.

Shiela is survived by her son Walter, daughter Ann, grandchildren John, Evine and Kjersti and two great-grandchildren, Zayne and June. She had many nieces and nephews who meant a great deal to her, as well as many cousins and friends that were the focus of her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Carol Lee. Shiela is interred at Miller Cemetery.

A celebration of Shiela’s life was held on Friday, April 13 at Grace Lutheran Church of Molalla. The humor of that date would not be lost on her.

He transferred from the Oregon Air Guard to the Oregon Army National Guard May 24, 1960 as Administration Supply Technician,Recruiter and First Sargent for Troop C, 1St Recon Squadron 82nd Armor. He was medically discharged from serving the country that he was so proud of. Rex and his brothers always had a horse on the farm in Kansas and Woodburn, and they became involved in rodeo. Often there would be as many as five Bothums entered in events at a rodeo.

After suffering a severe injury in a bull riding competition in 1965 Rex was forced to give up the sport and even though the doctor said “no more bull riding” he never said Rex couldn’t break and ride horses. Rex continued with that passion for the next 40 plus years.

In 1966 he and Astrid purchased a small farm in Silverton, the Lazy 2B Ranch, and continued with his love of raising and training horses and a few Longhorn cattle just to admire.

He was a charter member of Keizer Elks and and an associate member of Silverton Elks. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Appaloosa Horse Club, 1978-1987 and President1986-1987, traveling the US to promote the breed and attend meetings. Rex was a board member of the Oregon Appaloosa Horse Club and assisted in the formation of the Oregon Appaloosa Racing Association.

Rex was a past member of Salem Golf Club taking up the challenge of golf after his first heart surgery and later became a member at Evergreen Golf Club with two holes in one to his credit. He was a voracious reader of Western novels, US history and loved a good Western movie or TV program, often viewing the same one many times. He loved his elk hunting trips with his brothers, nephews and friends, and bird hunting and fishing trips with special friends. Rex enjoyed entertaining family and friends on holidays and outdoor barrel chicken barbecues on the farm, traditions he would not give up. He was the greatest story teller ever, sharing his last ones in December around a campfire at a celebration in Woodburn and later with his nephews and brother at home during his “final rodeo”.

Rex is survived by his beloved wife Astrid, of 58 years; sisters June Hammond, of Albany, Jean Bonacker, of Tigard, and Mary Lou Rhine, of Eugene; brothers Marvin, of Culver, and Jim, of Heppner, and many nieces and nephews and their families including those acquired in his marriage to Astrid. He loved each of them in his own special way. He had many wonderful friends and a special red-headed friend and spouse from Lodi, California. He was preceded in death by his sister Irene and brothers Keith, Kenneth, Kermit, J. Shirly and Tony.

By Mary Owen A chance visit to Silver Falls State Park led to a lengthy love affair that motivated a California couple to move to Oregon.

Thomas makes hiking sticks, birdhouses with Oregon license-plate roofs, and wooden refrigerator magnets.

Janet makes wine cork Christmas ornaments, plaques and picture frames with sayings burned onto them, as well as children’s T-shirts with an image of South Falls.

“Our daughter moved to Washington in 1990,” said Jim Thomas, who now volunteers with his wife, Janet, at the park they fell in love with. “Later that year, we drove our RV up to see her new digs. On the way, we stopped to visit an old friend in the Eugene area. He said, ‘Since you’re going north, you should stop at Silver Falls State Park.

“We had never heard of the park, but fell in love with it immediately,” Jim added. “We were a long way from retirement at that point, but we felt like we needed to consider this area seriously.”

The couple worked for a Los Angeles-area title insurance company, Jim as vice president and chief title officer, and Janet as supervisor of an internal support department.

Seven years after their first visit to the park, they camped there for a week.

“We did a lot of hiking,” Thomas said. “At that time, we looked at Sublimity and liked what we saw.”

The two returned to Oregon in the fall of 2004 for a twoweek vacation specifically to scout out communities, before finding a house in Sublimity that they loved.

“Surprising ourselves, among others, we bought the house and informed our company that we intended to retire at the end of the year,” Thomas said. “We moved in at the end of January of 2005, and have never been sorry.

We love Sublimity, and could not possibly be in a better neighborhood.”

Next-door neighbor Earl McCollum, an Oregon native, shares lots of information about Oregon with the couple.

In addition to ringing up and bagging items, store volunteers answer questions, provide trail maps and other informational handouts about the park, and “just visit” with people, Thomas said.

“Janet and I started volunteering at the park for events – Historic Silver Falls Days, Mother’s Day, the Christmas Festival.”

In the summer of 2009, the store moved into the historic log cabin that was previously used for events and was renamed the South Falls Nature Store.

“In my opinion it’s the best gift shop in the Salem area,” Thomas said. “The log cabin is an historic building, completed by the CCC [Civilian Conservation Corps] in 1938, and it is perfect for us.”

At the time of the move, Lou Nelson, president of Friends of Silver Falls, asked Thomas if he would commit to volunteering at the store on Friday mornings.

“I took it on, and I have never regretted that decision,” Thomas said. “Working in the Nature Store is my first retail job, but it could not be a better place. Almost all of our customers are in a good frame of mind when they come in, which makes it a very pleasant retail job.

Basically, the job consists of helping our visitors to have a wonderful experience in the park.”

“Our visitors come from all over the world, many of them for the first time, so it is always fun to gather their impressions of our state and our park,” Thomas said.

“We have a large map in which visitors can insert a pin in their home area, plus a visitor’s log for their information and comments.”

Volunteers are always needed, and half-day sessions are 2.5 hours in the winter to four hours in the summer.

“New volunteers will be working with a seasoned volunteer until they feel comfortable on their own, and our administrator’s office is close by when she is not in the store,” said Thomas, who serves on the Friends board of directors. “A volunteer parking pass is provided for the days that you are working in the store.”

The mission of Friends of Silver Falls State Park is to support the educational and interpretive opportunities available to park visitors and to promote the preservation and protection of Silver Falls State Park. Silver Falls is the largest of Oregon’s state parks and had over 1.3 million visitors last year. Over 90 percent of the funds FOSF uses to support the park come from sales in the group’s Nature Store.

Local athletes’ college seasons recounted

With spring upon us – kind of – it’s time to look back at how athletes with local ties fared in college action during the winter season: Izaak Tobin, Silverton: The redshirt senior wrestler at Oregon State University finished his career with a 17-16 record.

He was 2-2 at 149 pounds during his senior year. Tobin also wrestled at 133 and 141 during his years with the Beavers after scoring 131 wins and two state runner-up finishes with the Foxes.

Alia Parsons, Silverton: The Foxes sharpshooter who led the squad to the 2016 Class 5A title, moved from Grand Canyon University to Clackamas Community College where she provided instant offense off the bench for the Cougars, averaging 12.2 points in 19 games while adding 3.1 rebounds.

Clackamas finished 21-8 overall and 12-4 in the Northwest Athletic Conference South division. The Cougars advanced to the NWAC tournament but fell in the round of 16 to Everett.

15 times, averaging 6.2 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Nighthawks. He was third on the squad in assists and minutes played and fourth in steals.

Lakin Susee, Kennedy and Hailey Smisek, Silverton: Susee, a 5-7 sophomore, averaged 9.5 points in the 17 games she played for Chemeketa, which finished 9-18 overall and 7-9 in the NWAC South. Smisek, a 5-3 freshman, averaged 7.7 points in 27 games, led the Storm in steals (1.9 per game) and was third in assists (2.4 per game). Susee helped lead the Trojans to the 2016 Class 2A title, while Smisek took home a 5A title the same year.

Sam Roth, Silverton: Roth, who starred in the Foxes’ 2015 5A title run, played in all 26 games for Northwest Nazarene, which finished 13-13 overall and 9-11 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

first place. The eighth-ranked Buckaroos, 3-1 in district play, come to Mount Angel on May 4.

Julian Downey, Silverton/Santiam: Downey, who played with Roth on that 2015 state champion team and also led Santiam to a Class 2A title in 2017, averaged 4.5 points per game as a freshman at Warner Pacific in Portland.

The 5-10 Downey averaged 47.1 percent shooting on 3-pointers. The Knights were 24-10 and advanced to the NAIA Division II national tournament, where they turned in a 1-1 record.

Silverton, meanwhile, is 9-2 overall and 5-1 in Mid-Willamette Conference play after scoring a series sweep against South Albany and taking the Central series 2-1. The Foxes are ranked 10th in Class 5A, while conference foes Crescent Valley (8-1-1, 3-0) and Corvallis (6-0, 11-1) rank 1-2, respectively. Because the Mid-Willamette schedule consists of one series against the same team each week, Silverton does not play C.V. or the Spartans until after May 1.

Baseball: Kennedy is 9-1 overall, 3-0 in Special District 2 play and ranked No. 2 in Class 2A-1A by the OSAA. The Trojans, in typical Oregon fashion, have had five games washed out by weather issues. During spring break the squad captured a tournament hosted by Riverside and Irrigon, scoring 36 runs in their three games. Kennedy scored a critical early league win by triumphing 10-5 at St. Paul on Monday to take over

Kayaking

Escape for the mind, exercise for the body

By Melissa Wagoner Escaping from the stress of the daily grind just might be as easy as climbing into a kayak, pushing off from shore and letting the worries of the day float away.

“It gives me this peace,” Dawn Taylor, who works as a director of childcare for the State of Oregon, said. “It’s an escape to check out.”

Taylor, who has been kayaking for the past five years, got into the sport when a friend took her out.

“I was hooked,” she said. “It’s cheap, easy and quiet.”

Cynthia Gregory who, like Taylor, was born and raised in Silverton, also started kayaking as a way to relieve stress.

“I was looking for something to do that would help quiet my life from the ‘busyness’ and stresses of work and caring for elderly family members and get me close to nature, and something close to water,” she said. “I’ve always felt at home on or in water.”

Although both Gregory and Taylor are extremely comfortable in the water, not all kayakers are swimmers. Some even use kayaking as a way to overcome their fears.

Silvertonian Chris Mayou, who does not enjoy swimming, was able to work around her discomfort in the water by investing in a good floatation device and starting out close to shore. She also suggests that beginners utilize the many resources and safety classes available.

“A friend and I went to a swimming pool and we practiced getting into our kayaks,” she said.

Now, five years after her first kayaking trip with her brothers, she is out on the water for several hours twice a week.

She has also kayaked the San Juan Islands with a kayaking club and is an administrator for the Facebook group Flatwater Kayak Paddling Oregon, one of the many internet resources for both avid kayakers and those looking to break into the sport.

Cassandra Portner, the children’s librarian at the Stayton Library, also utilizes the internet as a way to connect with other kayakers and learn more about the sport.

“The first year I paddled I started to call it ‘Church of the Double-Bladed Paddle,’” she said. “A few friends joked that they’d

join that church. I started the Facebook group in 2011.”

The group, wildly popular, currently numbers nearly 25,000 members and has garnered Portner invitations to kayak all over the world; “[f]rom Norway to Tasmania, and in almost every state in the U.S., plus the provinces of Canada,” she listed. “It’s my dream to make a paddling pilgrimage someday.”

According to Portner one of the greatest things about kayaking is its accessibility, regardless of age and gender, and Gregory agrees.

“Everyone, including kids, can and should kayak,” she said. “Take a guided tour or class with a supportive group to help teach water safety and self-rescue. Kayaks are incredibly stable and easy to use and whether you use a sit-on-top sport kayak or a touring kayak, you’ll find fun and interesting places to go.”

Because kayaking involves a minimum number of accessories, finding the right kayak is paramount. Sit-on-top, sit-in, long or short are all questions that need to be addressed before purchasing what will be not only the most expensive item, but also the most important.

“Sit-on-tops are not as agile and you’re going to get wet,” Taylor said, who uses her open-air craft as an opportunity to get some sun. “It’s where you want to go and what you want to do.”

Mayou agreed. She uses her eight foot sit-in paired with a dry suit to kayak yeararound. She suggests that anyone looking at entering the sport visit one of the many outdoor stores in the area that allow customers to try before they buy.

“There are too many kayaks that don’t

have good floatation and they will sink,” she cautioned.

Boats, paddles and life jackets – all can get very expensive but Taylor and Mayou agreed that they can often be obtained through resale avenues and estimate the entire package at around $300 - $400.

“I think it can be a really inexpensive sport to get into,” Mayou said. “Once you have your equipment you don’t have a lot more cost.”

kayaking is an excellent way to break out of the daily exercise grind.

“Personally I lost quite a bit of weight and went from sedentary to active and got off of medications for cholesterol and high blood pressure,” Portner enthused. “Kayak has changed my life in a thousand ways.”

It has also changed the lives of many of her group followers, including some recovering from heart attacks and cancers who focused on paddling as an additional way of healing their bodies and minds.

All four of the women agree that no matter what gets kayakers out on the water, it’s getting out there that counts.

“Paddle your best boat the best you can,” Portner said in one of her “sermons.”

“Always want a better boat until there are no better boats for you. Gain skills the way that works for you, but keep on gaining skills until there are no better skills for you.”

Think local, act global I must hand it to Kyle Palmer, Silverton’s venerable mayor. He has the patience of Job and can hold his tongue with the best of them, even in the face of naiveté, ignorance, vitriol, and, on occasion, just plain stupidity. As someone once said, “You can’t fix stupid.”

Palmer must routinely “suffer the slings and arrows” of outrageous comments, often made on Facebook. I love the argument made that the City has a goal of reaching 14,000 people quickly. Uh, that was a projection made some years ago for future planning, so no, Kyle and friends are not in Los Angeles giving out cash incentives to people who can pad our population.

Kyle is always so patient, pragmatic, and does his homework before opening his mouth and answering thoughtfully.

He fields all questions thrown at him respectfully, articulately, with a little humor, and with facts. If he doesn’t know the answer, he won’t do like many people do and “wing it “or simply make up new “facts.” He tells them he will do some

Challenge the status quo. Or simply ask Kyle. If he doesn’t have the answer, he will have it for you soon enough.

But it is well-thought out, never condescending, and always polite. There are those who disagree with him and his other “handsomely paid” volunteers on the City Council and Planning Commission. Public discourse is great.

He will be the first one to tell you that.

I will be the first to tell you, “If you don’t like the direction we are heading, change it.” Go to meetings. Write or talk to our elected and appointed leaders, ask City staff about what makes water
