A Zenith of giving
By Brenna Wiegand Silverton Zenith Women’s Club is a successor to the Silverton Junior Women’s Club, formed in 1932 to provide women a monthly reprieve from their daily demands. “A lot of them were on farms and their lives revolved around children, home and farm duties and it was a big thing for them to get together once a month and socialize with other adult women,” said Zenith Women’s Club President Barbara FischerChase. “They started getting involved in projects to help the community and set out to be a philanthropic organization.” As club members got older and times changed, it became harder to recruit younger members whose lives had become more complicated and in 1969 some of the more mature women broke off to form Silverton Zenith Women’s Club, whose members currently range from their 30s into their 80s. When the Junior Women’s Club disbanded in 1998, they asked Zenith to
take over their Tree of Giving project, which is now one of the club’s biggest undertakings. Zenith partners with Silverton Area Community Aid, Silverton Together, Silverton Fire District, Les Schwab and others to place Christmas trees at Hi-School Pharmacy, Rite Aid and five local churches. The trees are festooned with tags describing specific clothing needs of children from low-income families. Community members take these home, fulfill the listed needs and deliver the wrapped gifts to the club. “The fire department comes in with lots of toys that we sort by age to include with the clothing and any extra games or books, so each child gets a good Christmas,” Fischer-Chase said. Another major project is providing layettes to new mothers at the hospital several times a year. “Last year we donated about 110 layettes
to the birthing center,” Fischer-Chase said. “We purchase new items and work with groups that make little knitted hats, sweaters and blankets and make nice little bundles the hospital gives out.” For many years they’ve collected motel soaps, shampoos and such for distribution among homeless students and last year they started a feminine hygiene project. “Our women found out that there were girls missing school because their families couldn’t afford hygiene products,” FischerChase said. “These are given to the school counselors for distribution and include extra packets to get them through the summer.” With help from the City of Silverton and high school students, Zenith Women’s Club maintains Town Square Park, which owes its existence to this focused, seemingly tireless group of women. About 25 years ago the city came to Zenith to assist in demolishing an old car dealership on the quarter-acre plot and, with then-president Michelle McColly

Silverton Zenith Women’s Club makes connections for philanthropic projects Wheelchair Games and last year provided $750 scholarships to four Silverton High School graduates. Such endeavors require a steady stream of funds and the group has greatly benefited from grants provided by Oktoberfest and Judy’s Party and other generous donations from the community. The club typically nets $1,000-1,500 at its Family Bingo fundraiser in the fall, and about the same amount at its adults-only “Championship” Bunko Night. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Bunko night on Saturday, April 4 at the Silverton Elks Lodge.

versatile park along Silver Creek. Zenith has participated in many other events as needs arise – Relay for Life, helping victims of domestic violence and,
at the Oregon State Fair, assisting police in distributing ID bracelets for kids in case they are separated from their folks. They’ve taken part in the National Veterans
“It helps the Elks and it helps us,” FischerChase said. “Silverton is a very special community; there’s a lot of working together.” With 40 members, Zenith is one of the largest women’s clubs in Oregon. It belongs to the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the latter from which Zenith receives its insurance and non-profit status. Although they have a good time getting together, the club has kept its focus on meaningful philanthropic work and in the process has become a well-oiled machine.
“A lot of the spouses were reluctant to come to the Bunko fundraiser, but it only takes one time and they’re hooked,” Fischer-Chase said.
“When I stepped into the presidency, I found that it’s really a pretty easy job,” Fischer-Chase said. “A lot of things that come up I can delegate to the appropriate committee[.]”
The Elks also hold their monthly prime rib dinner that night and by giving a heads-up when purchasing Bunko tickets attendees can enjoy the meal at 5 p.m. then play at 7.
The club has about 15 different committees. Some of these women, including Jeannette Olafson, Ruth Kaser, Charlene McColly, Shirley Smith and Rita Doerfler have been club members more than 50 years.

Volunteer opportunities abound at hospital
By Nancy Jennings
What’s Needed & How to Help
In tightknit communities like Silverton, one doesn’t have to look far to find a need or cause to contribute to in order to help make a positive impact.
Available volunteer positions include: Information desk, clerical, gift shop, espresso coffee shop, CareVan (drivers and dispatchers), chaplains, and family visitor lounge. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, complete an interview, background checks, and training.
According to Legacy Silverton Medical Center Volunteer Services Manager Kay Seiler, volunteers are highly valued and always needed at the hospital. “They choose to be here and make our days better. They really make a difference. Our shifts are typically four hours a day (8 a.m. to 12 p.m., or 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) We’d love to have volunteers help once a week or every/ other week,” Seiler said, adding that those wanting to cover more shifts are enthusiastically welcome. Training is provided and lasts as long as necessary for each individual. While their assistance is needed year-

round, winter and summer months present special challenges due to some volunteers heading South for family holidays and warmer weather – or vacations taking them elsewhere

in the summertime. Marie Jackson, the hospital’s volunteer coordinator, encourages younger people to consider becoming a volunteer.
The experience can help shape their decisions on future careers, even possibly in the medical field. “Most of our volunteers are retired. The first thing I hear when they come in to get an application is ‘I’m so bored at home or I’m new to the area and I want to meet new people and make new friends.’ “We have younger volunteers, too, who are trying to decide what they’re going to do with their life. They can go into a department like ‘Med/Surg’ and just sit there to answer phones and take messages, while at the same time they’re right in the middle of everything. So, they’re learning ‘is this the kind of environment I’d want to work in or not?’” Jackson explained. “We hope that maybe they’ll come back and work for us someday,” Seiler added.

The ones who love you appreciate a personal touch
Sending photos to relatives – especially ones who don’t have a cellphone or a computer – can feel like a drag. But I used to be great at it. In college I wrote lengthy letters to my grandmothers – two grandmothers and a great grandmother – and I dutifully mailed them with a 33-cent stamp affixed to the corner. Many of these missives had photos inside, nothing amazing, most were outof-focus pictures of my dorm room. Here’s my bed. Here’s my roommate’s bed. Here’s my desk – really boring stuff but, for three women who had never been given the opportunity to attend college, let alone live in a concrete dorm room the size of a walk-in closet, I thought they might be interested. Apparently, they were, or at least they pretended to be, keeping every letter and stack of photos I sent throughout
And the photos, although of much higher quality and of more interesting subjects – namely her three great, great granddaughters – were very few and far-between.
those years and beyond into the present day. I know because two years ago, when my great grandmother passed away at the age of 94, it became my job to go through the drawers upon drawers of old letters, cards and photos stashed in a spare room. What I found there, as I made neat piles of letters from my many cousins, was that my pile was embarrassingly small. When email and text messaging took over as the most used form of long-distance communication I often forgot to write for months at a time.
But what’s done is done – so they say – and I put my guilt aside, got on with the project and prepared the stacks of memories, that were handed out like grab-bags, after the funeral. Most of the recipients felt much as I expected – surprised at being handed a paper sack full of memorabilia they had sent away, maybe a little guilty at how few items were in their bag. But one cousin – whom I hadn’t seen in about 30 years – had a truly unique reaction. She began to cry as she carefully removed each and every photo, smoothing them with her hands. “I lost my photos in a house fire a few years ago,” she explained.
Wedding photos, baby pictures, obligatory school pictures, all had gone up in smoke never to be seen again – or so she thought. Now, here they were, carefully preserved for posterity by our grandmother. And as I sat there, watching her laugh and cry over the first teeth, bad haircuts and prom photos of her two boys I realized all the many reasons to give those photos, write those letters and just share life with those you love. It’s important because they love being a part of every moment – even the boring ones – watching you grow and change even when they can’t be there to see it happen. And because some day they won’t be there and all that will be is a box full of memories. But mostly because, when the world is burning down around you, your family has got your back.

Kennedy girls claim basketball 2A title
The Kennedy High girls basketball team roared out to a 17-2 lead and were never seriously threatened Saturday, March 7 in the Trojans’ Class 2A tournament championship game against Monroe. Kennedy, the top-ranked team in the tournament, bounced the Dragons 48-26 in Pendleton to win their third title in the past five seasons under co-coaches Kerry Hall and Peter Hall. Sophia Carley scored 7 points and Ellie Cantu added 6 during Kennedy’s hot start. The Trojans led 17-4 at the quarter, 29-15 at the half and 42-20 heading to the fourth. Carley finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. The senior post finished second in the tournament in scoring with 61 points and led all players in rebounding with 32 and was a unanimous selection on the all-tournament team. Cantu added 13 points for the winners and also made first-team all-tournament. She finished fourth in the tourney in scoring with 39 points. Also contributing for Kennedy were Hailey Arritola, a second-team all-tourney pick, and Catherine Butsch with 4 points apiece. Arritola added 5 rebounds, while Cantu and Reese Hall pulled down 4 apiece and Rylie Newton and Grace Schaecher were credited with 3 each. Arritola, Cantu and Elise Suing dished off 2 assists apiece. Kennedy also took home the sportsmanship trophy for the eight-team event. Kennedy, which finished 26-4 overall and a perfect 14-0 in the Tri-River Conference, led the tournament in defense, allowing just 31.7 points per
game. The Trojans defeated Coquille 50-36 in the quarterfinals and Bandon 51-33 in the semifinals. The Silverton boys and girls teams both finished unbeaten Mid-Willamette Conference seasons and were preparing for the state Class 5A tournament in Corvallis as Our Town presstime approached. We will have an update in our April 1 edition. Wrestling: Silverton advanced three athletes to the finals and finished sixth in Class 5A at the OSAA championships in Portland. Finishing second for the Foxes were Kaden Kuenzi (126 pounds), Robert Guenther (138) and Kody Koumentis (145). Kuenzi finished his career with two state titles and two runner-up trophies. Koumentis won a pair of state titles at Marshfield of Coos Bay before transferring to Silverton for his senior year.

The Foxes finished with 86 team points. Crescent Valley won the team title with 303, while two other Mid-Willamette Conference teams – West Albany 5th) and Dallas (8th) – also had strong showings.
Kuenzi was pinned in 5:01 by Crescent Valley’s Chance Lamar. Kuenzi was 45-5 this season, with four of the five losses to Lamar. Guenther (35-8) was pinned 2:50 into his championship match against Hunter Mode of Crook County, while Koumentis (39-11) lost 5-3 to Austin Dalton of Lebanon.
Adam Beltran (106) and Cole Boen (182) both participated for Kennedy, in just its third year of wrestling, but neither athlete placed in the 2A-1A competition.
The Community Roots School
Football: All-Mid-Willamette Conference lineman Tashaun Treat of Silverton has announced that he will play college football at Shasta Community College in Redding, California. Bowling: The Silverton girls, who won the district title in January, took home eighth at the state tournament held Feb. 22-23 at Firebird Lanes in Salem. Cassie Rooke took 22nd, Shelby Copeland was 23rd and Kylie Hettwer was 27th in the all-star standings for Silverton, while Katherine Howe was 44th and Lilly Fowler was 47th. Running: Nearly 350 runners and walkers participated Feb. 22 in the 5K and 10K Wurst Festival runs in Mount Angel. Tom O’Neil, 15, of Canby, won the 5K in 18:08.88, followed by Deanna O’Neil, 55, also of Canby, the first woman finisher in 19:31.83. Former Kennedy High athlete Leonel Jines, 27, was fourth in 20:43.50. Donovan DeWhitt, 18, of Happy Valley, won the 10K in 33:36.94. Heather Spurling, 29, of Portland, took 14th in 41:51.52 and was the first woman finisher. Foxes football coach Josh Craig, 29, was 45th in 50:14.98. Spring: Yes, the daffodils are out and folks downtown already have seen throngs of runners. That’s because the high school season has moved into spring mode. Athletes began practicing March 2, with the first OSAAsanctioned contests a go for Monday, March 16. Other Silverton athletes who participated were Owen Magill (5th at 195), Jacob Moore (won two matches at 113), Steven Powell (won one match at 160), Hayden Forster (138) and 170-pound Nathan Kuenzi, who had to medically forfeit his two matches because of a hand injury.
“I thought our kids competed well at state,” said Wilson, in his first year with the program. “Getting three kids into the finals isn’t something that happens often. So it was fun to see those seniors accomplish that together. Obviously, it was disappointing that we lost all three, but it doesn’t take away all the work those kids put in, and all they have done for Silverton wrestling.”

“In my opinion those two kids (Kuenzi and Lamar) are the best wrestlers in the state of Oregon at any weight class or division,” Foxes coach Jared Wilson told Our Town. “I love the fact that Kaden chose to go the same weight and challenge himself. He could have gone a weight class up or down and most likely have won another state championship. The leadership qualities he portrayed in making the decision says a lot about the type of competitor Kaden is. There are not a lot of kids out there that would have chosen that path.”

People Out Loud
True sweethearts
It’s good knowing the’re out there
There is a sign at Robert Frost School that implores everyone who passes there to be kind. Because of confidentiality, suffice it to say that a group of young people, mostly girls, have been exceptionally kind, respectful, inclusive, and tolerant with a young girl who is on the autism spectrum. I love this particular kid. I’ve met her several times, and she is a sweetheart. She has her moments – kind, loving, teasing, and fun, then an outburst or two reminding others that autism can be tough for everyone. But in telling her story, her grandpa broke down. It was so touching, so poignant, and so very sweet. The fact that young kids, not always well-known for practicing the fine arts of patience, empathy, and inclusion, would say hello to her every morning, ask how her day was going, and didn’t run away in terror during a not-so-good episode, struck a touching chord with her gramps. I get that. Grandkids are incredible and absolutely fill our hearts

with love, our heads with patience, and souls with gratitude. It’s like a love I’ve never felt before. They smile, you melt. They say something witty, inadvertently or otherwise, you crack up. You think about them and your day suddenly becomes brighter. Her grandpa, a kind and wonderful man, experienced pure joy in an otherwise chaotic environment. It is one thing to walk in the hallways with kids 8-11. Loud, boisterous, goofy, fun, a bit self-absorbed. It is another thing to see them stop to talk with a young girl with special challenges in life, who is not always the life of the party or leader of the in-crowd, and is often alone.
To the young girls who stop and take the time to recognize her, recognize her humanity, see her as a peer, tolerate her “differences,” and treat her with kindness, as we all want to be treated, let me say two things. Bless your sweet little hearts. And God bless your parents. All of you, as well as the educational professionals who work with these kids every day – keep up the good work and thank you. We need this more than ever in our everyday lives. I really liked Jim Webb. He was a gentleman. Kind, soft-spoken at times and passionate at others. Incredibly talented contractor. Great wit, fine sense of humor, and wild about his wife, Linda. Pictures of them are so darn cute. Loving, laughing, and living. We lost him this month and it is not a happy time for his family, friends, and a bevy of people who knew him or of him. Linda shared with me an insight the public would not necessarily see:

“He was a natural teacher who mentored many young carpenters. One such carpenter said Jim taught him a lot more about being a man than how to swing a hammer. I’m going to miss that rascal. He was my sweetheart.”

“Travel was his thing. He loved meeting and knowing people from all different cultures and was respectful to all. His customers loved him. He was an interesting grandpa. No computer games. He would look at bugs with the grand kids under a magnifying glass and bought them magazine subscriptions he could learn from. He took them on dog walks and they collected treasures along the way. Jim would inner tube with them and talk seriously with them.

“He had a kindness and intelligence to him. His artistry as a carpenter was remarkable. We were house addicts. He loved music and especially the blues.
