By Melissa Wagoner In less than a year eight-year-old John Kloft went from being diagnosed with kidney disease to receiving the transplant of a new, healthy, functioning kidney, courtesy of his mother, Patty. “I’d do it again,” 31-year-old Patty said unhesitatingly. “I’ll never take health for granted again.” It’s been a whirlwind journey for the family, who received the devastating news that John had stage four kidney disease and would need a transplant in May 2020. It was in the midst of the pandemic, making healthcare decisions difficult. Thankfully, both Patty and her husband, Mike, were able to receive COVID vaccinations in February, early on in

the process, which enabled them to schedule John’s lifesaving surgery for March 17, 2021.
But the most difficult part was being away from her husband and son, who continued living in their California rental house near Stanford until April 19. “When I left and they had to stay, that was a hard two weeks,” Patty admitted. “That was the first time we’ve been away from each other – ever.”
“They waited three weeks past the second shot,” Mike said of Stanford Medical Center’s vaccination protocol. “And they still made us quarantine for 10 days.”
Luckily for John and Mike, they were kept very busy with blood tests – verifying that John’s body wasn’t rejecting his new kidney – and with schoolwork as well.
But all of the hassle became worth it when John, Mike and Patty Kloft, post surgery at Stanford. “We kept John on track, which is unusual,” Mike said of the second-grade classes John continued to attend virtually through Butte Creek Elementary School. Rather than fall behind, his reading – which prior to his surgery had been a struggle – actually came easier than ever once his health was on the mend. “After his transplant he was reading everything,” Patty said. So far, John is exhibiting far more energy than he has in a long time and happy to be back on the farm where he can explore with his dogs. “He gets a biopsy at six months,” Mike said of the monitoring John will continue to receive. Then, at one year, a checkup,” Patty continued. “Stanford is really thorough. They make sure he’s not showing signs of rejection. And then, two years after the surgery you’re considered good.”

Preparedness Good, but not completely out of the woods. Because, chances are high that John will need multiple transplants throughout his life. “A lot of people are getting 20 years,” Mike said hopefully. Adding that the family has had numerous potential donors volunteer to be tested the next time around. Family, friends, employees and even strangers have helped them through one of the hardest periods of their lives. “We want to thank all of the people who donated to John’s transplant fund,” Patty began. “We met our goal for $100,000.” “And we want to thank our customers and staff that helped while we were away,” Mike continued. “We made it. We’re back. And it’s so nice to be back.” Donations are still being accepted for the costly medications John continues to receive as well as for future surgeries at https://cota.org/campaigns/ COTAforJohnsJourney/blog/our-story.
By Melissa Wagoner In May, fire season had already been declared in numerous areas throughout Oregon, which has many agencies – the Oregon Department of Forestry among them – gearing up for the worst fire season on record and asking residents to be prepared. Which is Strong Silverton – a collective of both individual citizens and representatives from the Silverton Fire District, police cepartment, city and Red Cross, among others – has started a new platform. TBOne Ready is designed to help residents in the Silverton area prepare for the next emergency event. “We were heavily involved with organizing disaster aid during the ice storm and, remembering the wildfires, recognized that everyone in the city was focused on survival issues,” Strong Silverton member and TBOne Ready initiator Mike Ashland recalled. “We did OK, but we were not prepared. We felt we needed to strike while the iron

More importantly, allows households to register, connecting them with neighbors and encouraging the organization of both private and community-wide resources. “TBOne Ready is a simple way for people to know what to collect and be supported by their neighbors in their emergency preparations,” Ashland explained. “When disaster hits, the neighborhood will be

better able to survive collectively until help arrives.” While registration is absolutely voluntary, it is strongly encouraged as a way for neighborhoods to track supplies such as generators, ladders, CB radios, walkie talkies and cell phone chargers as well as information like emergency skills training and medical frailty. “There are no requirements whatsoever,” Ashland stated. “TBOne Ready is based on building community, trust and skills.” In an effort to spread the word about the program, and as a way to educate more people about the importance of disaster preparation, Strong Silverton is hosting a TBOne Ready training event at the Silverton Palace Theater on June 26. “TBOne Ready is here to voluntarily build a sense of community within small neighborhoods,” Ashland said. “Hopefully that sense of belonging and trust will translate into cooperation in preparing the whole neighborhood for a disaster.”

Junior First Citizen By Melissa Wagoner When Hailey Arritola found out she was the recipient of this year’s Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce Junior First Citizen Award – a $2,000 scholarship presented annually to a deserving senior at John F. Kennedy High School – she was beyond surprised. “I’m just super excited,” she enthused. “I didn’t expect this at all.” A member of the Future Business Leaders of America, the National Honors Society, JFK for Life, Habitat for Humanity and ASB Vice President, Arritola has an aptitude for leadership. “I like being involved in as much as I can,” she said. But it was Arritola’s involvement with the Habitat for Humanity – and one project in particular – that has felt especially significant.

Elise Suing receives Maureen Ernst Scholarship
By Melissa Wagoner
“Being online the entire first half of the school year has made covering activities, taking photos and gathering content very difficult,” Robby Morrissey, the Publishing Class instructor, wrote in his letter of recommendation. “Despite having never taken Publishing before, Elise has risen to the tough task of completing the yearbook. I’ve been so impressed with her creativity and ability to communicate and reach out to students to get what she needs for her pages.”
Maureen Ernst was a longtime member of the Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce and a passionate advocate for her community. So much so that, when she passed away in 2018, the chamber created the Maureen Ernst Scholarship, which funds a $2,000 unrestricted gift to a deserving John F. Kennedy High School senior each year. “When we remember Maureen, we remember her dedication to volunteerism and the friendly, positive manner in which she shared her love for Mount Angel to everyone she encountered,” Chamber Treasurer Kristi Brackinreed said at the presentation of this year’s award to graduate Elise Suing. “While reviewing Elise’s application, we saw many similarities to Maureen’s favorite things in life – Habitat for Humanity, Oktoberfest, leadership roles and athletics,” Brackinreed continued. “And just as Elise is the ASB Public Relations Officer, Maureen always served

as the Chamber’s PR rep.” Suing – daughter of Karen and Shawn Suing – is also a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish, where she became a member of the Junior Catholic Daughters of America in the third grade. And, in her senior year, became a staff member with the high school yearbook, despite this being an especially challenging year.
“I know that when I am having a stressful day Elise is the first to try and help or cheer me up,” Schmidtman said. “She also brings that vitality to the classroom by producing great work and unforgettable projects.... She is creative, and thoughtful with how she dives into her work.” She is also passionate, especially when it comes to helping in the community – even when the community in question is not her own.
“After the fires of September 2020, we as a leadership group, wanted to do what we could to help those affected,” Suing recalled. “We created the TriRiver Strong Fundraiser involving other schools in our league giving all proceeds to Santiam High School... Our JFK Leadership was able to raise $2,000 in hope that this gift would help them feel our support. I have always enjoyed opportunities to be a leader, but being able to give back to a community suffering such devastating loss was exceptionally rewarding.” Attending Oregon State University in the fall to study Business, Suing believes the things she learned growing up in Mount Angel – where community service is a city-wide tenet – will help her going forward. “Determining how I can share my gifts and talents with my community will be the first step I take,” she said. “... I hope to always be of service to those who ask and more importantly be of service without being asked.”

Success honored By Melissa Wagoner Riane Miles didn’t set out to teach business classes. A graduate of Oregon State University, she has a Master’s Degree in Agriculture Education. But when her alma mater, Silverton High School, reached out to her and asked, “What do you think about teaching business?” She thought – why not try something different? Never someone to do a thing halfway, Miles took the bull by the horns, getting her Career and Technical Education license in Business and becoming the school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advisor. “I did FBLA here in Silverton,” she explained. “So, I knew how important that experience was for me and I knew how important it was to grow that in Silverton.” That first year the club had 30 members. But Miles knew she could do better. And so, she did, growing the membership to a whopping 80 members at its peak in 2020 – prior to the closure of schools due to

the pandemic – and becoming the largest club in the state.
But even with the changes, Hawker believed Miles deserved to be recognized for all of the hard work she’s put into the program prior to the pandemic and since.
“It’s so much extra work,” Miles said of the endless hours she spends at events, chaperoning students on trips and overseeing monthly community service projects. “But that’s what it takes to grow a program.” All her hard work did not go unnoticed, at least not by senior FBLA member Bridgette Hawker, who – along with other students – nominated Miles for the 2021 Advisor of the Year Award. “I was one of at least a few who sent in nominations,” said Hawker. She first had the idea to nominate Miles during the State Business Leadership Conference held in Portland in 2019. “I sent one in and then asked other officers/members to nominate her as well.” And they did, first contributing letters of recommendation and then setting up an in-person award ceremony to compliment the virtual one held this year. “I was doing the sound,” Miles, who

never imagined she would be this year’s recipient, recalled. “Then they announced my name and my team came in with all this stuff.”
“[T]he Advisor of the Year is someone who works hard for their students constantly,” Hawker said. “Someone who encourages and supports students, someone who is inspiring. That’s exactly what Mrs. Miles is.... She pushes students to do the absolute best they can... She sacrifices her own time for her students, and she does the best she can to make sure her business classes are enjoyable and to make sure that our FBLA chapter offers something for everyone and is inviting to all.”
It was a much-needed boost to a year that has been incredibly difficult.
Miles’ efforts have paid off, with two freshmen participating on state championship teams and eight more qualifying for nationals. She’s looking forward to next year, when events will once again be held in-person.
“All my scheduled community service events were canceled,” Miles said. “Everything is virtual.”
“... I’m looking forward to having students back in the building and getting them back involved,” Miles said.

Silver Falls State Park is known for its natural beauty but it’s becoming known for its artistic beauty as well, owing largely to one man who is known simply as Peace, the Painter of Parks.

“I’m an artist and not particularly tied down,” Peace said of the journey that inspired him to work as the sole artist-inresidence at Silver Falls State Park for the first time in 2015. Coming off a pilgrimage for peace, in which the artist attempted to run across the United States, Peace felt he needed a change of pace – literally. And so, he hopped on his bike and headed out.
“I wanted it to be as authentic as possible,” Peace said. “The impetus that first year was I wanted the experience.”
“I decided, I’m not going to run anymore, I’m going to paint,” Peace recalled. “So, I put out to the universe – where should I go? And I heard a resounding voice say, ‘Go to Silver Falls.’”
But more importantly, he wanted others – especially those who could not physically make their own way into the canyon – to have the experience as well. “The next year, the manager of the Conference Center wanted everything to look like a photograph,” Peace said of his

Now, five years into his tenure at the park, he has just completed two of the most challenging paintings he’s ever created.
“I’ve been here since Jan. 20,” Peace said. He was given residence at the Silver Falls Conference Center during the project. Adding, “To put two paintings out in that time was a bit of a stretch.” The challenge was the size. One canvas, on which Peace painted a stunning South Falls rimmed by snow and ice, measures ten feet by four and a half feet. The other, another snowy scene, but this time featuring the iconic wooden bridge beside the South Falls Day Use area along with a bobcat and a beaver, measures seven feet
long by four and half feet tall. “It’s 11,000 square inches of canvas,” Peace said. “It’s been very pushing.” Utilizing few photographs for reference, Peace relied upon his own visualization and imagination to create the scenes, especially when it came to the bobcat and beaver. “They’re the two animals I’ve seen here all winter,” Peace noted. “I’ve been tracking them the whole time.” He was also observing the life cycle of trees, which features prominently – though much more subtly – in both paintings. “It’s always difficult because you’re putting it out there forever,” Peace said of the desire to make certain each painting is deserving of its place in one of the most popular state parks in Oregon. It’s a lot of pressure but surrounded by the beauty of nature it’s an artist’s paradise and there’s no place he’d rather be.

Foxes hoops squads win 6A challenge
The Silverton High basketball squads have just completed a stunning 10-0 run through the Class 6A Salem squads.
said boys coach Jamie McCarty. “Going 6-0 against the Salem schools was a memory that our seniors will always have.”
The boys team went 6-0, winning the games against Sprague, South Salem, West Salem, North Salem, McKay and McNary by an average of 22 points.
Both Silverton squads now return their attention to the Mid-Willamette schedule. The boys are 5-0 and control their own destiny. A win Wednesday, June 16 at 6-1 South Albany would go a long way toward giving McCarty a fourth league title in his four years at the helm.
One asterisk: North Salem, although a Class 6A school in terms of enrollment, is “playing down” at the 5A level. The Foxes girls went 4-0, losing out on two games because the McKay game was canceled and North is not fielding a team. What’s going on here? Is it the oddity of a COVID year? In one sense COVID played a huge role because the 5A schools in the Mid-Willamette Conference intentionally scheduled the Salem 6A schools to limit travel during the pandemic. Also, Silverton has elite basketball programs, winning a boys state title in 2015 and a girls state title in 2016 while perennially earning spots in Corvallis
for the 5A state tournament. Last year the girls were seeded No. 1 and the boys were No. 2 and both teams had reached the semifinals when the tournament shut down because of the virus. It also should be noted that the Foxes girls squad had taken down 6A’s No. 1 team, South Medford, in January, while the boys’ lone loss in a 25-1 season to date came against 6A Sherwood at a December tournament in Salem. “I think 5A basketball has been very good for many years.” said Tal Wold, the Foxes’ girls coach. “We have also done fine against the bigger schools.” “I think it was an exciting and different opportunity for our program and our players really stepped up for the challenge,”
Wold’s girls squad is 3-1 in league, with the lone loss a 51-48 decision May 22 at Corvallis, which has finished league at 7-0. Win out and the Foxes will finish one game back at 6-1. Cross Country: Silverton Coach Erik Cross and his staff already are gearing up for official fall workouts, which start Aug. 16. Summer training is scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. starting July 5. For more information on how to get involved call Cross at 503-269-6350. Softball: Foxes junior outfielder Marin Bliss was named second team all-state for
Class 5A. Teammate Jordon Shepherd, a senior outfielder, earned honorable mention. Silverton finished 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the Mid-Willamette Conference. Gymnastics: Silverton Gymnastics Academy turned in a series of exceptional performances at the state championships May 21-23 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. The squad’s bronze, silver, gold and diamond squads all took first place in their team competitions. The platinum team finished third. “Our teams did amazing at state,” said coach Celia Storey. “I was extremely proud of them.” Alumni watch: Former Foxes running standout Haile Stutzman turned in a pair of all-American performances at the NAIA outdoor track and field championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Stutzman, a sophomore at Huntington (Indiana) University, took fifth in the 1,500 in 3:56.00 and seventh in the 5,000 at 14:54.52. Follow me on Twitter.com @jameshday

Nola Jean Parkinson Nola Jean Minshew Parkinson, 89, passed away in her sleep early the morning of May 31, 2021, at her home in Silverton, Oregon. She was born on Sept. 5, 1931 to Dorothy Ruth Hudson Minshew and Robert Perry Minshew in Pocatello, Idaho. They soon moved to Twin Falls, where she spent the rest of her childhood. Nola enjoyed music and dance, and as a young child, was quite a talented tap dancer. Later, she played the French horn in the school band. Nola graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1949, before heading back to Pocatello to attend Idaho State University as an English major, where she joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. It was there she met a young pharmacy student, Fred R. Parkinson, who became the love of her life and her constant companion for the next 70 plus years. She and Fred married on April 8, 1951 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to Coos Bay, then to Central Point, where they spent the next few years.
Sept. 5, 1931 – May 31, 2021 Fred had begun saving to purchase his own drugstore almost immediately upon entering the workforce, and soon their dreams were realized when Fred and Nola bought Silverton Drug Store in 1955 and became proud members of the Silverton community. Nola helped out at the store in the early years, and was an avid bowler. Later on, she took up golf. She enjoyed volunteering with many local organizations, was a long-standing member of the local PEO, and also a member of multiple bridge clubs. When Fred took elected office as State Representative in 1981, she became his administrative assistant during biennial legislative sessions for the next six terms. She enjoyed their time spent together at the Capitol serving his constituency over those 12 years, and cherished the

friendships made with other legislators and their wives along the way. Due to her love of music, she was also very proud that all five of her children sang in the Choralaires, some at the same time, and she loved to watch them perform. Fred and Nola enjoyed an active retirement. Nola spent several months each year in Hawaii with Fred and her step-mother and best-friend Marj. Nola also loved the annual weekend Christmas shopping trips to Portland and Seattle which she enjoyed with her daughters and granddaughters. She looked forward to the annual camping trip to Hermiston with 100 of her closest family and friends, always wanting to be the first to arrive in their fifth wheel trailer, and the last to drive away. Nola left a legacy that was also her greatest joy: her family, and to Nola, the concept of family need not always involve blood. She opened her home and her heart to countless friends whom she treated like family.
Nola is predeceased by her parents, Robert Perry Minshew and Dorothy Ruth Hudson Minshew; her brother Robert Neil Minshew; and her grandson, Marshall Perry Briscoe. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Fred R. Parkinson; her five children: Pennie Day (Mike), Fred A. Parkinson, Shannon Montoya (Lem), Polly Briscoe (Dan), and Nicole Winnen (Jarod); sister, Linda Morrison (Earl); sister, Marjorie “Punkin” McGihon (Jon); brother, William “Buster” Minshew (Gretchen); and her step-mother, Marjorie Minshew. Also surviving Nola are 11 of her grandchildren: Erin Scott (Colin), Kevin Day (Katie), Adam Montoya (Jenny), Stephanie Boni (Pat), Kyle Day (Haley), Jordan Briscoe (Sarah), Carter Briscoe, Nolan Briscoe, Connor Winnen, Sydney Winnen, Casey Winnen, and 18 greatgrandchildren. A service was held on Saturday, June 5 at the Silverton Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with a private graveside service that followed at Union Hill Cemetery in Sublimity.

Life lessons
Class of 2021 got more than their share of them
To the graduates of 2021, my sincere congratulations for your wonderful accomplishments. It could not have been harder, right?
schools fought for what they thought was right. Your senior year was more memorable for what you did not get to do than what you were able to.
You weathered COVID-19, quarantines, wildfires, ice storms, and an entirely new but hopefully temporary “normal.” You learned online in your pajamas, caught sneak peeks of your friends on weekends or when the Zoom teacher was looking the other way, missed out on so many events like prom, homecoming, theater productions, speech competitions, club events, and the socialization that makes high school special. It had to have been a huge challenge to learn on-line, maintain friendships, figure out scholarships, and attract colleges with your academics, canary-like singing voices, cello skills, and athletic prowess. Your faces were covered with masks and hand sanitizer took the place of your favorite fragrances.
Basketball in June? Football in January? Graduation split in two?
The adults around you tried their best. They have never been through this either, and like many complex issues today, there are no easy answers. Someone says masks are stupid, COVID is no more than the
flu, and kids just need to be back in school. The governor is evil. The governor saved Oregon. Others argue that wearing a mask is not a panacea, but it helps. One family refuses to social distance, wear masks, quarantine, and get vaccinated because COVID is “fake news” and the vaccine was inflicted on an unsuspecting public way too fast. Another family stays in, plays board games, reconnects, binges on Netflix, and Facetimes grandma at the nursing home because SHE is the vulnerable one. Facebook becomes the purveyor of facts and the vehicle of rumors. No easy answers. Yet through the COVID chaos, fire fiasco, and ice storm incident, you survived. Your teachers and school staff did their best. The
Then finally, back to the classroom for what was left of your final year of high school. What a life lesson. You made it, learned from it, and it etched indelible scars and memories in your 18-year-old minds. Painful, but a life lesson. Now go forth with new strength to tackle whatever the world throws at you. You have the tools to handle anything after a year like no other. Good for you. Happy Fathers’ Day to all of those who play a major role in the life of a child. It reminds me of a wonderful song from a few years back sung by Brad Paisley – He Didn’t Have to Be. A beautiful and poignant story about a stepdad coming into a young boy’s life. If you are a dad, a stepdad, a caregiver, a foster parent, a custodial uncle, or a significant mentor and role model
June 29-July 3 9am-9pm
in a young person’s life, good job. It may very well be the most significant role you ever have. Sometimes you think they are not listening; then out of the blue they say something that proves they are. They pick up on your mannerisms. They like your music. They love your dad jokes, or at least pretend to. To Trevor and Briana – I love you dearly and am so proud of the adults and smart, funny, genuinely kind, ethical, decent human beings you have become. Do your best. Give this life your best shot. Jettison the lessons I did not mean to teach, like giving menacing looks when you interrupted Lonesome Dove with a request for an Eggo. If there is something I have taught you in this one shot I had to be a dad without an instruction manual, let it be loving other human beings and respecting the fact that we all have way more in common than differences. Seek commonalities. Build on that. “Looking back, all I can say about all the things he did for me is I hope that I’m at least half the dad that he didn’t have to be.”
