Brandi Teeney’s faith takes her across the globe and home again

Brandi Teeney has two passions – sharing God’s love and swimming. This summer, she dove headlong into both.
During their 30 days in poverty stricken Latvia, they teamed with a local YWAM group to speak at schools about the dangers of human trafficking. They helped run a clothing bank and gave out more than 1,500 food bags.
After graduating from Silverton High School last year, Brandi set out with 13 other young women for Australia, Latvia and Amsterdam as students in the Discipleship Training School (DTS) of Christian missionary organization Youth With A Mission (YWAM).
“For us it didn’t matter whether they really knew Jesus or not; we came in and just loved them unconditionally the way Jesus loves people,” Brandi said. “As I’ve come home I’m still trying to work on that really hard; I’m here to serve; that’s totally what my purpose is. I’ve struggled a lot since being home but it’s been a good challenge and knowing this is where I’m supposed to be makes it a lot easier.”
The first three months in Australia, DTS students took classes and plunged into community service. They got a taste of homelessness when dropped on the streets of Newcastle for 24 hours with little more than their Bibles. In Amsterdam, days were more free form. “We did not have any planned ministry so we just woke up every day and asked the Holy Spirit what we should do,” Brandi said. “That led us to things like giving flowers and writing letters to girls in the windows of the red light district or singing worship songs in the center of the

“I’ll just go get in the water,” she said. “When you’re swimming, all you can focus on is what you’re doing in that moment – and you’re getting an awesome whole-body workout at the same time.” Her six-month overseas workout brought to the surface Brandi’s talents and passions. She did a lot of growing up. “When I went I was more timid and I think almost afraid of life,” she said. “I’ve become a lot more independent and, season by season, day by day, I feel ready to take life on. I don’t know what the future holds but I’m just really excited not to plan anything and see what God has for me.” Brandi keeps a blog of her experiences at www.lovesetyoufree.com.

Book it
Club members discover adventure, friendship, perspective
By Brenna Wiegand The women of the Ladies Literary Society – though they love books and discussing what they’re reading – Heidi Walker says they’ve become more of a social group. The group usually meets around 6:30-7 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month and rotate houses. It’s nearly 60 members strong, but on average about a dozen people show up each month, starting with snacks and beverages. “We usually have some sort of theme and we discuss the book and then of course we end up discussing all sorts of other life experiences we’re having; we’ve become a more social group,” Walker said. “We sort of tie in how the book might relate to our lives or whatever; it always ends up being a good discussion.” The book club usually reads a book a month unless it’s an especially long one. In choosing what to read next, group members offer suggestions and they vote on it. “We talk about the genre, the author and the reviews the book as gotten,” Walker said. “We have a lot of really avid readers in our group so there are a lot of different perspectives; a lot of different views that come out.” Here, members of the Ladies Literary Society offer some great books for summer reading. Canterbury Renaissance Faire runs July weekends The Canterbury Renaissance Faire is an indicator that time travel does exist. Guests to the festival will be whisked back in time to a Summer Market Faire from the era of “Good Queen Bess” (Elizabeth I, 1558 -1603.) Faire goers will be able to see, hear and experience what life was like in merry ol’ Elngland. He discovered the colorful glassworks when he was a young man working as a journeyman in California in the early 1960s. His job was to climb power poles and remove the old insulators and replace them with the new technology. “For some reason, I would take them home in my lunch box at the end of the day,” he said. “My colleagues knew I was collecting them and would give ones they took down to me.” Describing her husband as an “encyclopedia of information on insulators,” Rebecca Campbell said David enjoys sharing what he knows with others. David is hosting an Insulator Swap & Sell Saturday, Aug. 1, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Coolidge - McClaine Park. Glass insulators were first made in the 1850s to be used for telegraph lines, David said, adding during the Civil War, lines were strung on poles and the glass insulators protected the wire from burning the poles. With the utilization of electricity and the telephone, insulators were needed on power, telephone and railroad lines. As the advances in technology continued and wires began to be buried in the ground, glass insulators became obsolete. Collecting them just to because he liked them, it wasn’t until he visited an antique shop and found a book on insulators that he realized other people collected them and that they were worth something. People began collecting antique glass insulators in the 1960s. David recalls going to the first insulator swap meet in 1965 and the first national meet in 1970 in San Diego, Calif. An international organization of collectors of insulators, the National Insulator Association, began in 1973. At the time people were taking up the hobby, David sold 3,500 insulators so he could purchase Washboard Willie’s tavern in Spokane, Wash., in 1974. “I still kept some,” he said. Rebecca said when she started dating David in 1983, she knew about the insulators and the quest to find them

“He jokes he wishes he were younger because he would like to go scuba diving looking for insulators buried in the Columbia River,” she said. “When they built the dam, they flooded old railroad lines with glass insulators.” Even when they travel to other states or foreign countries, David is on the lookout for insulators. The clues to what the insulator was once used for is determined by its color, shape and size. The insulators have names such as frog eyes, beehive, pilgrim’s hat, hockey puck, corkscrew and Mickey Mouse. They can range in value from 25 cents to $20,000, David said. Howard Banks is the editor and publisher of Crown Jewels of the Wire magazine in Lostine, Ore. Banks said he once witnessed an insulator sold in a private sale for $65,000. “I think what makes insulators interesting to collectors is they are history you can hold in your hands,” Banks said. “Insulators made it possible to send a telegraph about the death of President Lincoln or the news of the wars.”

Rebecca said she thinks David is attracted to collecting because of the history. “David loves old things,” she said. “He loves learning the history of what went before us. Insulators are pieces of pioneer technology that is gone now.”

A special visitor Editor’s note: Long-time Our Town writer Vince Teresi was so taken by this piece by his friend Barbara Platt that he wanted us to share it with our readers. Sometime ago, I had a special visitor that started coming into the backyard every day. This new acquaintance of mine usually searched for his snacks about the time that I prepared a meal. So, I was given ample opportunity to study him on the walkway outside the kitchen window where he often observed me, too. This crow’s distinctive appearance was due to his (or her?) exceptionally large size. All other birds seen from my vantage point were dwarfed by comparison. When this uncoordinated creature bent down over his plump belly to take in nourishment, it occurred to me that he could easily topple over, drive his beak firmly into the ground and be stuck in that awkward position indefinitely!
The crow’s uncooperative attitude often caused him to be a target of various mischievous acts and regarded as an outsider on his own turf. Early on, newcomers were warned by regular visitors to avoid this reclusive character. Toward the end of my friend’s stay, he made a surprising entrance into the yard with another crow. It was shocking to realize that this was the standoffish bird I had come to know. All creatures that had been frequenting the neighborhood were astonished at his miraculous change of heart.
While viewing the crow, his unsociable behavior became apparent. The smaller birds tried to engage this unfriendly fellow in their comical antics, but he refused to take part. Occasionally, they displayed their frustration by chasing and

Squirrels invited this loner to perform in their high-wire acts on a favorite telephone line while chipmunks did their utmost to coax him into a frisky game of tag. He also was encouraged by all of them to participate in their numerous pranks but to no avail. Meanwhile, a raccoon family residing high above the ground in an oak tree seemed quite amused by the theatrics of those whimsical entertainers below.
When walking, those spindly legs jerked him slightly from side-to-side while moving forward with the gait of a silent screen player. Although wobbly in step, a loss of balance never became a concern. It was evident that nature had provided unique protection to allow for these discrepancies.

After being given some terrific travel tips, these two comrades disappeared from sight to follow another adventure. I wondered if the new companion would become part of my outdoor menagerie, but it eventually became obvious that this scenario was not going to happen. One morning I noticed a mother duck with her ducklings strolling back and forth on the walkway in front of my window. Whenever she decided to change direction, the young ducks turned in unison with military precision to follow her lead. However, I was not the only one to witness the exercise. The crow, a short
Within a brief period of time, one of the raccoons that had been residing nearby in their family oak tree clumsily plodded across the lawn directly toward the flock of ducks, causing them to scatter in fear. The crow immediately deterred the inquisitive neighbor from advancing any further by rapidly encircling it and furiously flapping his wings non-stop. Rather than endure such humiliation, this unwanted invader made a quick exit to the satisfaction of all. Once the small brigade of ducks had left, this impressive bird hastened back to his favorite vantage point on the walkway outside the kitchen window, making certain all was clear and that nothing else could interfere with our visual communication. As spring surrendered to summer, my special visitor made his last appearance. On that occasion, he approached the window and gazed at me for an extended period of time. This final gesture seemed to indicate that the moment had arrived for him to move on. So, without further hesitation, this extraordinary crow slowly turned away, spread his wings and soared into a rainbow-streaked sky… never to return. -- Barbara Platt

New brewery in the offing for pale ale fans By Melissa Wagoner “Anybody can make beer but what sells is the story,” said Belgian Underground Brewing owner Sheldon Lesire. Belgian Underground Brewing, a new nano brewery in Silverton, is brewing small batches of high quality, easy drinking beer in the memory of Lesire’s Belgian grandfather, or “opa,” who took part in the German resistance during World War II. “The Dutch only fought for five days, but the Belgians held out for 18. It’s a point of pride,” Lesire said. Lesire’s opa worked for the railroad passing along train schedules used to track German movement. “Three different times the Germans brought him in for questioning and three different times he talked his way out of it,” Lesire said. “There is this national streak of orneriness. The Germans overestimated the Belgians’ willingness to follow rules. Belgians joke that the national pastime is tax evasion.” Belgian Underground Brewing, a joint effort by Lesire and his father-in-law Dale Coleman, is full of Belgian spirit. Belgian Underground is rebelling against the popular Indian Pale Ale that many microbreweries are brewing – a big beer with a lot of hops – and making something more subtle, maybe even a bit evasive. “This is a drinking beer,” Coleman said. Lesire and Coleman began a once-amonth brewing hobby three years ago, finding recipes on the Internet and using them as a springboard for their own creations. “Dale is into home brewing and do-ityourself everything,” Lesire said. Now Belgian Underground is looking to become something more. The duo have spent the past year getting the word out by selling shirts and growlers with the Belgian Underground Brewing Logo and attending several events where they gave free tastes of their brew all in preparation for opening their own brewery. Now on the last leg of a long journey, they are

taking steps to become certified and plan to be selling to the public this fall. “Some of it is business but a lot of it is fun,” Lesire said. One of the aspects of opening a business that Lesire and Coleman have found most fun is being a part of a supportive brewing community. They have received help from local breweries in splitting bulk glassware orders, with the brewing process and even with procuring hops. “Most hops are already spoken for from farms in the area. We are so small, however, that we are essentially able to use their ‘rounding errors.’ We use so little at this point that we haven’t had any trouble at all procuring hops,” Lesire said. Coleman, who is still enjoying the creative brewing process, plans to brew full-time when he retires in two years but wants to retain the nano brewery status and that Belgian spark. “If we can sell 100 barrels we’ll make 99,” Lesire said.

College update: Here is a look at how former Silverton-area athletes fared in college competition this spring. Stephanie Wells, a junior at Montana, participated in the NCAA outdoor championships at Hayward Field in Eugene. Wells, who advanced to the NCAAs with a 152-7 throw at the regionals in Austin, Texas, did not have her best day in Eugene, finishing 24th at 144-0. Her career best is 155-6 and she threw 153-8 earlier in the season. Morgan Anderson, a sophomore at Oregon State, finished the season ranked No. 1 for the Beavers in the 1,500 (4:24.55) and second in the 800 (2:12.05). Devin Geiger, a sophomore at George Fox, finished third in the high jump (6-21/4) and 12th in the long jump (20-4) at the Northwest Conference championships. Geiger turned in seasonal bests of 6-6 in the high jump and 21-43/4 in the two events. Aaron Molstad, a senior at George Fox, took ninth in the 1,500 at the NWC meet in 4:10.77. Kelsey Rosborough, a sophomore at Linfield, won four doubles matches with partner Lukas Kleinman as the No. 1 doubles squad for the Wildcats. Rosborough also participated at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Andrew Axmaker, a Silverton resident who attended Country Christian High School, was a freshman infielder for the Chemeketa Community College baseball team. Axmaker hit .170 in 17 games for the 19-23 Storm, with one double, one triple and seven RBIs. All-sports success: The final totals are in for the Oregonian Cup, the allsports competition that covers athletics, academics and sportsmanship. Eager for new ones
At least five readers will not believe this, but my 45th reunion from Silverton High School is coming up next month. I know – I barely look 61 much less 62.
generation and changed us forever. We saw Neil Armstrong and 250 million beating hearts land on the moon, a charismatic president die, and an African American win an Oscar for the first time ever for his leading role in Lilies of the Field.
The time has flown since the class of 1970 left the hallowed halls of then-Silverton Union High School. We had a good class. In fact, so good that a few industrious members of my peers took it upon themselves to make a billboard much snappier than some Madison Avenue marketing genius did. For those of you who remember the liquid magic called Heidelberg beer, their boring sign read, “Promises To Be Good. In writing.” Our classmates thought it was missing something, so in the space between the two sentences, they added “Class of ‘70.” It made the papers, perhaps not in a good way but that is beer under the bridge. We inherited another class of 1970 and their younger minions from Kennedy High School in Mount Angel. Looking back to that time, 1969-70 to be exact, what a tough time it must have been for those kids to leave the familiarity and comfort of their smaller, private Catholic school for the “urban” and much larger Silverton Union High School. Think of it. You were often the lead actress/singer in the school musical, or the starting shortstop on a small school powerhouse baseball team. Top dog, head cheerleader, A/V stud muffin, budding valedictorian, or the presidentelect of the science club. Then you have to compete and be absorbed into a class of 250 other kids and their cliques. Most made lemonade out of the lemon they were served up. From a personal perspective, I would like to invite you all to our 45th reunion.
We have bonds, even if we didn’t always know it or show it. It’s different now. We have gone our separate ways on to hopefully bigger and better things outside the trauma of high school. But we have way more in common than differences. We can all draw Social Security now if we want to or get into the Palace Theater with the senior discount. We know about those cones that A&W Root Beer were served in, and just how many cute girls worked at Dairy Peak. We put our young hands into ice cold green bean vines to earn a buck or two, and were damn proud of our first check from hauling hay. We know it is really “Safeway Hill” and not “Danger Hill” just because the sign says, “Danger, hill.” We knew pretty much every word to every Beatles song, especially the “nah nah nah, nah nah nah” chorus in Hey Jude, as clever a lyric as was ever written. We sought Satisfaction from The Stones, and looked for This Magic Moment with our friends plus Jay and the Americans. The boys all dreamed of Van Morrison’s Brown-Eyed Girl and what happened in the green grass behind the stadium and the girls knew the Dave Clark Five was singing Because to them personally. We knew about the war in Vietnam but were sheltered safely away even as the ravages of war took its toll on a
In 1967, Sidney Poitier became the most popular actor with three huge movies, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, To Sir With Love, and In the Heat of the Night. We thought race relations had finally turned the corner for the better with the Civil Rights movement, only to see racism rear its ugly head in our 63rd year on this big blue marble. We are forever connected, even though we didn’t always make an effort to say “hi” in the hallway or invite you to an impromptu “gathering” on Snake Hill. Regardless of whether your zip code was 97381 or 97362, we are the Class of 1970, and the class of this part of the valley. We promised to be good, and we delivered. Our class reunion is scheduled for Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Creekside Restaurant, 242 S. Water St. in Silverton during the weekend of the Homer Davenport Festival. The cost is $25 per person for appetizers, a no-host bar, music that will make your feet happy, a collection plate for the 50th, and a chance to re-connect with old friends and meet some old “new” friends who you sort of recognize from Mr. Woodall’s class.
