Water update By Kristine Thomas Melody Harpole of Harpole’s Produce in Silverton describes this summer as the “tomato summer.” “The hot, dry weather makes it a good summer to grow tomatoes,” she said. “When we have rainy, cloudy summers, it’s harder for the tomatoes to ripen.” Harpole, 39, has learned from her years farming that the weather goes in cycles, some years hot and dry and other years, rainy and cloudy. There are pluses and minuses to each cycle. Knowing the weather patterns helps her determine what kind of crops to plant, even down to the variety of the tomato. “This summer, a lot of farmers have said it’s more labor intensive moving irrigation pipes so they can water their crops,” she said, adding with the shortage of water, some farmers have been cut off from drawing water from creeks to irrigate.

Harpole farms two pieces of property, one near the Gallon House Bridge that borders Abiqua Creek and the other where she has her produce stand, 8071 Mount Angel Highway, NE, Silverton. Her family’s water rights on the Abiqua date to the 1940s. Harpole said there have been days when the creek has been dry and other days where the water has been barely a trickle. On Aug. 12, the water was higher than Harpole has seen it in awhile. “It’s because no one is running their pumps to irrigate,” she said. Her farm near Mount Angel Highway is irrigated by well water. “My well is fine. I have heard of a lot of people whose wells are running dry,” she said. “But we irrigate one of properties from the Abiqua. When it stops flowing, as it has at times this year, I can’t irrigate. I believe that we will have to replace a dozen fruit trees that were planted this

“It’s been a hot summer and all anyone is talking about is water,” Walker said. “There’s hardly any water in the creek.”
Both numbers are based on a seven-day average, he added.
He encouraged the council to begin investigating ways to store water, such as underground reservoirs. He also expressed concern about the snow pack being less in the winter and the need to collect and store rain from the fall and winter months. Silverton Public Works Director Paul Eckley gave the council an update on how the city’s Stage 1 Voluntary Water Curtailment was working. At a special meeting on June 22, the council voted to activate Stage 1 of Voluntary Water Curtailment.
“I know a lot of people have complained about us using all the water in Abiqua but there is still water going over the dam,” he said. Silverton’s water system is not dependent on snow melt, but rather rainfall. The city’s main water source is Abiqua Creek, followed by Silver Creek and the Silverton Reservoir. The city’s dam at Abiqua Creek was built in the 1940s and is gravity fed. Water from Silver Creek has to be pumped, and a new pump installed this month.
Eckley said on July 28, Marion County went from moderate to severe drought.
The city has the first water right on the Abiqua, dating back to Jan. 25, 1917. He said the city’s water rights on Silver Creek go back to the 1940s.
Last summer, Eckley said Silverton residents were using 2.1 million gallons per day. This year, he said, residents are using 2.2 million gallons per day.
At the city monitoring station below the dam, the water is flowing at 230 gallons a minute, Eckley said. Last September, it was flowing at 150 gallons a minute.

Silverton City Manager Bob Willoughby said it appears the Stage 1 Voluntary Water Curtailment is working “and we may not have to go to Stage 2,” which is enhanced voluntary conversation and curtailment. Stage Three is mandatory restrictions.
Metro Lic. #9404
Eckley said when it comes to the weather, “we are not magicians. We can’t predict if we will have to use water from Silver Creek. It all depends on if we get rain or not. We are keeping a close eye and monitoring the situation.” Editor’s note: What has your experience been with the drought this summer? Has your well gone dry? What have you done to conserve water? If you are a farmer, what changes have you made? What concerns do you have? Please send an email to kristine.t@mtangelpub.com if you would like to share your story or concerns.

and especially kids,” Hunter said. He said he relocated to Oregon to be closer to family, discovering Silverton via the Internet. His lifelong love of the outdoors was a strong attraction to the position as development director. “I have always been in awe of The Oregon Garden, but never thought I’d have the opportunity to be a part of its many impressive projects and programs.” Hunter’s priorities include strengthening the foundation’s capacity to fund future garden initiatives; improving the foundation’s endowment program; and addressing financial needs of facilities and projects at the garden. Danger? ... If you spend much time in front of a television, chances are there will be one of those not-so-real, reality shows on. One of the least obnoxious I have found is called American Pickers where Mike and Frank travel the backroads looking for rusty treasures that they can resell. Well, it turns out that they are coming to film in Oregon and if you have a large collection of quality “rusty gold,” you might even end up on the show. Call 1-855-OLD-RUST or e-mail americanpickers@cineflix. com with your name, contact info and description of your items to see if you have what it takes to be a reality star..... and no Darby, Ken doesn’t qualify as a “vintage item”.... If you’re also looking for old stuff (that’s what you call a segue...), there will be a lot of it on Main Street in Silverton on Saturday, Aug. 29. Come on down to (you guessed it) “Old Stuff on Main Street” and take home a treasure or two.... Given this busy fire season we’re having, it would be easy to imagine there might be times when all the fire trucks are out on calls... But have no fear, Chief Bill Miles will just walk right over and handle your emergency....and he’ll make it, too, as he proved at the recent Relay for Life event where he logged 22 miles in the support of the fight against cancer.... That’s 88 laps of the high school track. Rumors that he still can’t walk in a straight line could not be confirmed... Useless fact of the month: A duck’s quack doesn’t echo, and no one knows why. Silverton will soon be baker-less no more. After visiting Silverton, well traveled Dan Lliteras found a place to call home but found the city had one big thing missing.... the smell of freshly baked bread. To remedy this grievous flaw he is opening Silver Falls Bread Company on McClaine Street. Shooting for an October opening (the oven has yet to arrive from Italy), there

will be no retail sales but you will be able to purchase his goods next door at Gear Up. This exciting news leaves The Man with only one question...will those wonderful aromas be gluten free? The hills will be alive with the Sounds of Bratwurst... Four of the great grandchildren of Captain and Maria von Trapp will be performing two shows to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mount Angel Oktoberfest. The von Trapps concert is just one of the many additional ways for you to enjoy this year’s “50 years of Celebration.” I can’t wait to hear them sing my favorite song from The Sound of Music...”How do you solve a problem like The Man-a?” Anyone who has been in the area very long, knows that the dramatic rise in elevation over on East Main Street has been affectionately known as Danger Hill, and it has long been signed as such.... Well, apparently that didn’t meet some sign standard (someone from the group “Citizens for the Abatement of Risk Management” was probably offended... and we can’t have that). Sooooo, from this point forward, please refer to it by it’s new official name: “12% grade, no trucks and watch out for deer hill”.....just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? See you on the street...

The Old Curmudgeon
Reason to celebrate It must have been in 1998 that I drove a friend to Mount Angel from Albany where Velva and I were living at the time. We were helping our friend pick up a car which had been repaired in Mount Angel. It just so happened that Oktoberfest was in full swing when we arrived. Until that day, I had not heard of Mount Angel or Oktoberfest. I had a little time, so I took in as much of this event as I could. Wow! I was impressed, especially how this small town could produce this great event. It was amazing. I started thinking if Velva and I lived in Mount Angel, we could cut the distance to visit her daughter in Portland in half and before long, we had an apartment practically in the middle of Oktoberfest, right behind the Weingarten. I didn’t miss a day of Oktoberfest, enjoying all the sights, sounds and people. I lost my dear Velva four years ago and moved to Silverton, but I haven’t missed a day taking in all the entertainment of this world class event. You can bet I won’t miss a day of it this year either, especially since we will be celebrating Oktoberfest’s 50th anniversary. Through the years, I have had the pleasure of knowing the wonderful crew who make this event possible and I salute them. I also have met many of the talented musicians who have traveled long
distances to make you want to dance the Polka or flap your wings, shake a little tail in the Chicken Dance, sing rowdy and joyous songs or just get a few hearty laughs. Sometimes, I get the feeling that a lot of Silverton and Mount Angel residents think this is much ado about nothing. Or how could it be that good if it’s right in our backyard? If you had to drive a couple of hundred miles away, it might be worthwhile, right? Hey! Take my word for it. Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest is a world-class festival with people from all over the world, close to 400,000 strong, join in the festivities. I will let you in on a little secret. The city of Silverton runs a trolley service during Oktoberfest so you can be smart and avoid the parking hassle by leaving your car in the big vacant lot just north of Roth’s. (Just don’t tell them who told you.) The 50th anniversary of Oktoberfest starts on Sept. 17 and goes to Sept. 20. Mark your calendar and join the fun. Enjoy the celebration. I know I will.

After waiting for months to hear about my media credential for the biennial championships, I finally received an email from the Local Organizing Committee in Beijing. I needed to gather about 10 documents, and go in person to the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco to obtain a journalist visa.

Like a wise person once said, don’t assume anything in this life. Arriving in San Francisco, I took the BART train downtown and decided to walk the 20 blocks to the Chinese Consulate on Laguna Street, despite having recently injured my Achilles tendon. Limping up yet another hill, I realized too late I should have gotten a cab. There were none in sight.

Easy enough, I thought, and booked my flights to go down and back in the same day. I had been through this drill before, having gone to the Russian consulate in Seattle in 2013 to get a visa for the Worlds in Moscow and thought this would be much the same.
Farmer Friendly Road Service Available
After a 40-minute walk, I reached the consulate. Following instructions to turn the corner and go to the visa office, I was surprised to see a long line waiting outside. Then I saw – and heard – the amplified chants of protesters on the sidewalk in front of the entrance. “China is a murderer, Shame on China. China is a Liar, Shame on China.” About 30 protesters were yelling in unison, aided by bullhorns and drums. The doors to the
I soon gathered the protesters were Tibetans and sympathizers, who were assembled to protest the recent death of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche. A 65-year-old Tibetan Buddhist monk, Tenzin died in a Chinese prison in early July. He was serving a life sentence for allegedly “setting off explosions” and inciting separation of Tibet from China. The U.S. State Department and a number of human rights organizations had long urged China to release Tenzin from prison, after he was convicted in a closeddoor trial. Instead, Chinese authorities reportedly denied him medical care in prison, leading to his death. When the protesters showed up, the consulate officials locked the doors and did not say when or if they would be reopening. Since I was just there for the day, I had no choice but to wait. As minutes stretched into hours and the line to get in the consulate office kept growing, tempers began to flare. Some of those waiting needed to get their passports, which were locked up inside the office, in order to make flights that day or the next day. Verbal confrontations between those waiting and the protesters started to become more frequent and intense. I sympathized with the protesters, but I needed the visa. Another trip down here would be time and money wasted, so I stayed out of any arguments and focused on being calm and patient. Nearly three hours passed. The door finally cracked open and two people near the door got in before it closed again.

Ritchie has been a freelance writer since 2004, and has attended and written about three World Championships (Moscow, 2013; Daegu, South Korea, 2011; Berlin, 2009), as well as three Olympic Trials and numerous national championships. In June, Ritchie became the first recipient of the James O. Dunaway Memorial Award for excellence in track and field journalism, presented by the Track and Field Writers of America. James Dunaway was a freelance journalist who covered track and field for more than 50 years. Dunaway passed away earlier this year.
When covering the Moscow Worlds in the Luhzniki Stadium, site of 1980 Olympics, Steve Ritchie met Xin Li, a journalist from Beijing. “We were seated next to each other throughout the meet and became friends. She will also be at the Beijing Worlds and that will be fun to see her again.”
Ten minutes later it opened again. This time five people were let in. At that point the crowd surged forward en masse, pressing those near the door up against the walls and each other. It felt like I couldn’t move or breathe. I tried to stay upright so as not to be trampled. The doors finally opened again and stayed open. Despite the repeated instructions of the security guards, a single file line was never formed. I held my ground in the pushing, shoving, and yelling and
after 10 minutes, I was ushered inside. The crush of the crowd had been so great the water in my backpack had burst open soaking everything inside. But I was in, and within 30 minutes had managed to submit the papers and had a receipt for a visa to be picked up in three days. My nieces, who live in the city, got the visa for me, saving me a trip to San Francisco, and the first hurdle for this trip was finally cleared. Next up: Navigating the “Great Firewall of China.”

Traeger, Denn race to victory
Baseball team honored
Michael Traeger of Silverton captured the Homer’s Classic 8K covered bridge run in 28:47.2 on Sunday under stellar running conditions with a cover of clouds and the temperature about 70 degrees. Traeger, 28, finished about 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Steven Schaefer, a Portland resident and former Silverton High School athlete. Schaefer ran 29:12.7. Michael Snyder, 45, of Portland was third in 29:32.3. Traeger was second in last year’s event. Kennedy High athletes Adrian Parra and Noe Jines finished strong, with Parra taking fifth in 30:37.9 and Jines sixth in 30:45.5. A little farther back in the pack were two remarkable age-group runners from Salem. Wilson Herrera, 8, finished 48th in 45:03.6 and his 6-year old brother JJ was right behind in 49th in 45:07.8. Anna Denn was 11th overall in 31:40 and took home the trophy for top women’s finisher. Denn, like men’s winner Traeger, was the runnerup in 2014. Kennedy runner Kaylin Cantu was second among women in 35:31.7 and Alejandra Lopez placed third in 36:16.4. Cantu was 16th overall and Lopez was 18th.
female finisher. The 2-mile event also featured some strong age-group runners. Silverton’s Kanoa Buckley, 6, was 16th overall in 20:31.6 and his sister, Kailea, was 17th in 21:29 and second overall among female runners. The event attracted nearly 170 participants, with proceeds benefiting youth running programs in Mount Angel and Silverton. See www.racenorthwest. com for complete results. Little League: The Mount Angel Little League 9-10 baseball all-stars came within one game of a state title.
Hosea Catterall of Silverton took the 2-mile title with a run of 10:57.8. Catterall finished about nine seconds ahead of runner-up Wolf Seifer of Salem, who ran 11:06.4.
Mount Angel, the District 7 champions, finished second in its pool in the state event, hosted by Hermiston. Mount Angel took down the previously undefeated Medford Nats 18-5 in the semifinals to advance to the July 29 title game but fell to La Grande 10-3. Mount Angel had lost its opener in pool play, 14-0, to North Bend but rallied into the semifinals behind a 12-2 win vs. Hollywood/Rose City of Portland and a 13-3 victory against Tigard.
Eispeth Liermann of Silverton finished 12th overall in 19:34.8 and was the top
Members of the team included: Brian Beyer, Charlie Beyer, Luke Beyer,

Brett Boen, Riley Cantu, Andrew Cuff, Matthew Hopkins, Brody Kleinschmit, Ethan Kleinschmit, Ryan RedmanBrown, Julian Rios, William Schaecher and Cameron Traeger. The manager was Ryan Kleinschmit, with assistance from Bon Beyer and Shayne Kleinschmit. The team was honored Aug. 4 in Mount Angel. The boys were delivered to Garfield Street on a fire truck, lights flashing and sirens roaring. Their arrival kicked off National Night Out for the town. About 200 community members were there to applaud. Volleyball: Jessica Schmidtman is the new volleyball coach at Kennedy High. Schmidtman, who has been an assistant with the program for the past seven
years, replaces Staci Sprauer, who led the Trojans to the Class 2A state tournament the past three seasons, with a high finish of fourth in 2013. “Coach Schmidtman will do an outstanding job,” Kennedy athletic director Kevin Moffatt said. “She has been an assistant for the past seven years so she understands the ins and outs of the program. The kids all have great respect for her, she is knowledgeable about the sport, and she is a great teacher. Couple that with her competitive nature and desire for excellence and I think we have an outstanding hire for our head volleyball job.” Follow me on Twitter.com @jameshday. News tip? Making it big time Benny is hitting close to home. For those who don’t know, Benny is an anonymous do-gooder who has been stashing $100 bills in different shops around the valley for a few years. Recently, an unsuspecting patron of the arts was visiting Lunaria Gallery Aug. 2 and is now the beneficiary of Benny’s largeness. The shopper fell in love with one of Judee Moonbeam’s beautiful backpacks and wanted to use it right away. An artist behind the counter, Rebecca Cozart, took the tissue out of the backpack and found the crisp $100 bill signed by the benevolent benefactor. The shopper was excited as this was the first art item she had ever purchased. Nice work, Benny. You are most welcome in Silverton and Mount Angel anytime. Delbert Haener and Sheldon Schnider may see their hand-prints in the Hollywood Walk of Fame soon, now that the Mount Angel pair have received rave reviews for their July performance in Oregon Region of Providence Health and Services film series, How We Care, narrated and hosted by Portland television celeb Mike Donahue. The video, expertly coordinated by Cheryl Havens, dietitian at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center, focused on PBNC’s farm-to-table program. PBNC Foundation Board member Haener was interviewed extensively as he just came in from

the field harvesting broccoli and fellow board member Schnider’s blueberry patch made the final cut, too. Staff member Donna Pfeiffer and volunteer Ben Mueller also were part of the interview and filming. Congratulations to the men “outstanding in their fields,” and the entire PBNC crew for putting on a “two thumbs up” show. John Inoue was awarded the prestigious Samsung Scholarship, valued at $2,000, for his excellence and participation in the program. Eligibility for scholarship, the only such one awarded this year in Oregon, requires that the applicant have family members who have served in the U.S. military. John’s family’s military service spans generations, which his mother, Margaret, has well documented. Congratulations to John, Vanessa, Kayla, and Arely. You represented yourselves and your community spectacularly. John and Inga Mannion of Silverton are certainly established and successful in so many things - educators, mentors, parents to some awesome children, awardwinning football coach and community-minded people. THANK YOU!!
The Silverton High School Alumni Association held a Silent Auction at their 17th Annual Fundraiser for alumni and friends on August 7, 2015. The SHSAA Fundraiser was held once again at the Festhalle in Mt. Angel. The SHSAA Board of Trustees sends a tremendous “thank you” for allowing us to hold our Fundraiser at their facility. We hope to have a continuing relationship. In addition to items donated for the Silent Auction, many in-kind and cash contributions were received. We had over 115 donors with more than 170 Items for Auction Bidding. As a result of the tremendous support from the greater Silverton business and academic community, the Silent Auction raised over $4,440.50 to help support the Scholarship Program for the graduating seniors of SHS. Additional cash donations in lieu of items donated for the auction totaled $1,385. Our 50/50 and drawing awarded $346 to SHSAA and $346 to a lucky ticket holder. The SHSAA desires to provide special recognition and a heartfelt thanks to the following persons and businesses that unselfishly contributed to the outstanding fundraising effort: 3 Ten Water Almquist Studios

We also want to thank the many Silverton Alumni who stepped in Friday morning to help us set up for the Fundraiser and Auction. Additional thanks go to the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) from current Silverton High School attendees for setting up the tables and chairs early Friday morning. They returned following the event, helped clean up and put all tables & chairs back into the storage areas.
We look forward to another Fundraiser in 2016!
