Monday, Nov. 2 – Thursday, Nov. 5 Monday – Thursday: 10am - 5pm • Friday 10am – 1pm Dr. Michael Kim is announcing the SEVENTH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN CANDY BUY BACK PROGRAM. We will pay any child $2 PER POUND for their unopened candy, and we are also going to hand out free toothbrushes. Kids can still have all the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well. We will be sending all of the un-opened candy and toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss to the troops again this year. Last year we sent over 200 lbs! Dr. Kim is utilizing this program in an effort to help educate the youth of the community and the drawbacks of eating candy containing high amounts of refined sugars. Offering to buy back children’s candy will help them learn about dental hygiene and give them the chance to get involved with the community. There is no candy minimum, and all children must be accompanied by a parent / guardian.

Helping Hands

Ready to serve By Kristine Thomas Mike Norman and Jennifer Ohren simple consider themselves as “agents.” Understanding and believing St. Joseph Shelter and Mission Benedict are the ministries of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel, they both feel called to serve the Sisters’ ministries. “This is not my work,” Ohren said. “It’s God’s work in my hands. It’s evident to me and others that this is my calling. It’s hard work but when I am helping others, I am helped.” Although they have only been on the job three months, Ohren and Norman have enthusiastically been tackling a list of projects, from the remodeling of rooms at St. Joseph’s Shelter to reorganizing Mission Benedict, the food bank. Ohren is the director of client services. Norman is the director of operations. Together, they form a dedicated team when it comes to finding solutions to help those in need in the community.

New faces at St. Joseph Shelter/Mission Benedict

A 1987 graduate of Silverton High School, Ohren had been working at Outside In, a homeless youth shelter in Portland. “Taking this job gave me the opportunity to come back to my hometown,” she said, adding her days are busy with everything from ordering food from Marion-Polk Food Share to “putting out fires.” “I am really excited to be working here,” she said. Norman was working as a resource specialist for NW Senior Disability Services prior to coming to Mount Angel. Fr. Philip Waibel, OSB, of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mount Angel said the board knew they were getting more than people to do a job when they hired Ohren and Norman. “They truly reflect the goals of the ministry and they have a desire to help people through their ministry,” Waibel said. Sr. Sandra Meek who is the administrator of the Queen of Angels Monastery, said Ohren and Norman are “an amazingly

good match” to serve the Benedictine Sister’s ministries. “They have a sense of calling,” she said. “They are called to love and serve God.” “They are a match for what the ministry needs and what the Sisters wanted,” Fr. Waibel added. Given their combined work experience, they know how to connect clients to resources and how to meet goals. But beyond knowing how to do their respected jobs, they have a deeper understanding of the many reasons people turn to St. Joseph Shelter or Mission Benedict for assistance. Norman said one reason people turn to St. Joseph’s Shelter or find themselves living with friends or relatives is because there is a a shortage of housing. “There is a 99 percent occupancy rate and a 1 percent availability of housing,” he said. “Many people don’t have three times the rent to quality for housing or they have credit issues. People are scrambling to make ends meet.”

Ohren said they are also seeing more clients who are grandparents caring for their grandchildren. Since beginning work at the food bank, Ohren said she has seen an increase clients from 61 families in June to 108 families in August. Mission Benedict is open from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays. To do their work, they are counting on assistance from the community. Their current want list includes 10 queen mattresses, five bunk beds and bedding for the shelter. For the food bank, they need nonperishable items including soup and chil, personal care items, diapers and bottled juices. For both places, they could use more volunteers and cash donations. Spend a little time with Ohren and Norman and it’s clear they serve humbly, and despite the amount of work or the stress of the day, they find joy and some humor in what they do. For information about needs or volunteer opportunities at St. Joseph Shelter or Mission Benedict , call 503-845-6147.

SACA provides food plus tools to promote self sufficiency

By Kristine Thomas Silverton Area Community Aid Executive Director Teresa Warriner is counting down the days until the 39th annual Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 17. And she’s hoping what’s on the food bank’s shelves now will be enough to serve the between 200 to 400 families who visit each month. “What you see on the shelves is all we have left. We are getting really low,” Warriner said in early October. “We count on the food drive each October to replenish our shelves.” In 2014 the drive netted 10,000 pounds of food. “Last year, we gave away 500,000 pounds of food,” Warriner said. “We depend on donations and we receive 30 percent of our food from Marion-Polk Food Share, that delivers each week to SACA.” Although the economy has picked up, Warriner said many people are still struggling to make it. “Look around here,” Warriner said. “We haven’t slowed down. We opened an hour ago and we already have three requests for financial assistance to pay water and electric bills. The requests for financial assistance have increased the last three months. We aren’t sure of the reason why.”

39th annual food drive Oct. 17 Items needed: Soups, chili, tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, healthy snacks, dinner mixes, cereal, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, flour, sugar, diapers, personal hygiene items and coffee. How to help: Set a sack of donations on your doorstep by 9 a.m. Sturday, Oct. 17 to be picked up by a SACA volunteer or drop off at 421 S. Water St. from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. weekdays. 503-873-3446 Reasons clients visit SACA are varied. A car breaks down and a family is faced with the choice of paying to get it fixed or paying a utility bill. Or a health issue crops up and a job is lost. Or there’s a cutback in work hours and a paycheck shrinks. Housing, food, utilities – the bills don’t stop despite the changed circumstances. “People think we live in Mayberry. There are hunger issues in our community. Most people don’t have any idea about the need for food and help people need. There are families, people you know, who are struggling to make ends meet,” Warriner said. “We joke that we think we need to have a reality TV show to give community members an idea what happens here and who we are serving.”

Warriner said there has been a subtle but significant change happening at Silverton Area Community Aid. “We are becoming more of a social service agency,” Warriner said. “We have a case manager who prescreens clients. We offer two classes a month and we provide our clients with resources and referrals for a variety of things from help writing a cover letter and resume to get a job to how to apply for food stamps.” Warriner said SACA’s goal is to help people become selfsufficient. “Our ultimate goal is to put ourselves out-of-business. SACA is not a place where people get a hand-out. Instead, it’s a place where they get a hand-up,” Warriner said. Community members not only give financial and food donations, they also provide the encouragement and reassurance clients need to turn to SACA for help. “Most people are recommended to go to SACA from their friends, family or church.” Knowing how difficult it can be for someone to ask for assistance, Warriner said its her staff’s and her volunteers’ goal to welcome everyone who comes through the door with a warm and friendly smile. “We believe in the importance of treating everyone with the respect and dignity that they deserve,” she said.

Silverton Family Dentistry, in partnership with Silverton Together, is donating new coats to keep local children warm this winter. Call Silverton Together at 503-873-0405 for donation information.

The Man about Town

Oh, my gourd... So the Silverton City Council has determined that the future home of the Silverton Police Department will be on the old Square Deal Lumber property.... Rumors that Krispy Crème and Dunkin Doughnuts both applied for business licenses the next day couldn’t be confirmed as of press time.... The footbridge is back open and the foundations are set in the anticipation of the arrival of the engraved panels to complete the Silverton Veterans Memorial Plaza in Town Square Park. Assuming the panels arrive on time, this wonderful project is on track for an opening ceremony on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 3-5 p.m. Join The Man in saluting the dedicated group of volunteers and donors that have made the Plaza a reality. Hey you... That’s right, YOU... Put down this incredibly entertaining bit of prose for a moment and go prepare a sack

That’s quite a crop you have there (OK, if not now, at least by Oct. 22)... At last you can sit back and bask in the glow that comes from helping others and read on you wonderful, generous and darned good lookin’ person....

of nonperishable food items for the Silverton Area Community Aid Food Drive. Have the sack on your porch for pick up by 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 and help out your neighbors in need.... Do it... Do it NOW......(But don’t forget to come back and finish reading this paragon of journalistic excellence...) No, wait, stop reading again and now go fill a bag with new or lightly used coats, jackets, sweatshirts, scarves, gloves and hats.... Now get in your hoopty and deliver said bag to Silverton Together or one of 40 local sites.... Do it... Do it NOW

Calling all present or aspiring sugar based architects (Yes, I’m looking at you Victor...), The Gordon House is having a Gingerbread House Contest. Go to thegordonhouse.org to sign up now, contact the city to get your building permits in order and get your project started so it can be submitted for display by Nov. 20. There are several categories for adults and children, amateurs and professionals. The houses must fit in a 15” X 15” square and be mostly edible.... (It makes one wonder why all houses aren’t built this way... The Man’s gonna call up Dennis Downey and see if his crew could build me a full-sized house with those round swirled rock candy windows, a frosting roof, gumdrop trees and an M&M driveway...) For

The Old Curmudgeon

A bit old-fashioned

Some things never go out of style

The amazing Lawrence Stone along with his devoted crew Gregg Sheesley, Ron Nelson and Greg Hart have done it again.

with an offer of a ride to Marquam. It must have been a year since I had visited the metropolis of Marquam, and what a surprise!

The 2015 Sidewalk Shindig gave the residents of our beloved Silverton a great day of entertainment.

A new country story – and not just a country store – but one that looks like a country store ought to look.

Thanks, guys. I personally had a very special happening. Some of you may remember that last year I wrote about the joy I had in teaching a young married couple to waltz. They had been married a few years but had never learned to dance together. Well, I was standing in the parking lot by the Towne House during Shindig when this couple came up to me with big smiles and gave me a big thank you -- a hug from the lady. I had added something to their love for each other. Made me feel rewarded. I sometimes think of things we have

TINA ’ S Landscape

1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 is the easy to follow beat, the man with his right hand in the small of the lady’s back and left hand holding her right hand high, moving in unison in an acceptable and gentle form of contact between the sexes. We’ve lost it. But then, as long as you have never experienced it, you probably don’t miss it...

Not only does the store say “welcome,” but the charming owners say welcome!

A good friend of mine, Jerry Grulkey, dropped by one recent Friday afternoon

I asked them why they decided to open the store and they replied “We think it

Glenn and Vick Burbage are longtime residents in the area, their home just down the road. They have family close by as well. Their “welcome” handshake means something, and they are dedicated to be of service to the community, their friends and neighbors.

Now all of this does not mean you have to be a registered resident of the Marquam community to receive this big welcome and enjoy this convenient place to replenish your larder or buy a six-pack of beer. It is right on Hwy 213, with the antique gas pump right there, just for show. Maybe the owners will install a socket so you can recharge your electric vehicle someday. OK, I was impressed. You will be, too. Drop by and say hello to Glenn and Vicki.

“Scissor art is a German art form called scherenschnitte based on silhouette cutting which began in France many centuries ago. It’s also done in the Orient and nowadays it’s done with lasers but I continue to use fine-pointed, surgical scissors for my cutting,” Bornzin said.

Bornzin created a few pieces in his free time, one in high school, one in college, and two while he was in the seminary. Another influence on Bornzin’s art was its connection to his faith.

The now-retired Lutheran pastor served internships in both Sacramento and Spokane. It was his time in Washington that helped shape his artistic choices, scenes of the wilderness and natural landscapes. Bornzin said finding time for his art while serving as pastor was difficult. “I was ordained in 1966 and served as a Lutheran pastor for 40 years,” Bornzin said. “That included some

“I don’t usually keep track, but I know on the smaller ones it will be a day or two of four to six hours of cutting,” Bornzin said. “I’ll cut for two to three hours at a time, then I’ll take a break, eat lunch, eat dinner, then come back to it in the evening. Big ones can take a week or two. Maybe 40 or 50 hours, I don’t keep track. “As long as the good Lord gives me the eyesight to do it, I’ll keep doing it,” Bornzin said with a chuckle. Beyond fitness By Tanner Russ

Discovering the joys of yoga, personal training and intuitive eating, Bridget Schuch wants to share with others the harmony and balance she has in her life. That’s why she opened Gratitude Yoga and Movement Space this summer in Silverton. “Only the individual knows what it feels like to be in their body, only they get to decide their capacity to change,” Schuch wrote on her web page, adding she hopes she can give her clients the guidance and support they need to reach the places they are going while being a role model. Schuch added “Gratitude Yoga and Movement Space was created with the vision for a non-competitive environment that promotes movement of the body for all aspects of health. It is a space that encourages each individual to pursue their movement journey in whatever way feels most appropriate for them. Without judgment, we want to gently guide individuals in all ranges of activities in a supportive and caring space.” Yoga classes include Slow Flow Yoga, Yoga to Go and Vinyasa Flow. There also are Pilate, PiYo, Bootybarre and Movement for the Body classes. Schuch and instructor Rita Horter said the community has been supportive of the new studio. “Everyone has been very welcoming, 100 percent yes,” Horter said. “People have been asking me for years when I was going to teach in a non-gym setting.” For Horter, the drive to teach is based in benevolence. “I love helping people move their bodies! I grew up a dancer and so there was never a time where I wasn’t involved with movement on some level,” Horter said. “I love teaching people to trust in wisdom of their own body and learn to be the authority of their bodies and an advocate for their own wellness. No one else can do that for you. My favorite thing is when people tell me they know how to listen to what their body is telling them. That’s a powerful thing some people

spend their whole lives trying to learn.” A holistic health coach, Horter also helps clients navigate the world of nutrition advice by discovering what food and nutrition charges work for each individual. Schuch is completing her certification process as a health coach for intuitive eating. Both instructors have goals going forward for themselves and the business. For Horter, it is about expanding the classes that she teaches to welcome new students with a personal benefit as well. “In October, I’m taking a course at Studio Mamalates to learn how to work with postpartum women to provide safe and effective birth recovery exercise options and ‘mom and baby’ classes,” Horter said. “This is somewhat selfish, too, as I’m due with my second baby in February.” For Schuch, it’s about spreading yoga around, and improving as an instructor. She wants to keep introducing people to what yoga is and how it can help them with their health and exercise regime. “This is my vision and I am completely open to how it evolves,” Schuch said She’s eager for people to provide feedback on what types of classes and programs they would like to see offered. “Perhaps in the future it would mean bringing other instructors on into the space, I am completely open to that,” Schuch said. “I am completely open to the fact that you have to find the yoga instructor that resonates with you. In the future, I’m definitely considering bringing on other yoga instructors as attendance allows for that. That’s definitely something that I want to do. My vision is yoga here.”

Defensive juggernaut

Kennedy keeps tight rein on scoring

The Kennedy High football team’s defense continues to keep the Trojans among the elite football teams in Class 2A division.

carries, including 44- and 31-yard touchdown runs. The 5-11, 210-pound Lopez, meanwhile, banged away for 93 yards on 12 carries.

Kennedy improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Tri-River Conference on Oct. 8 via a 14-6 win against Regis.

Silverton’s football team, meanwhile, fell a game behind the leaders in the Mid-Willamette Conference with losses against Corvallis and South Albany. The Foxes, who have been battling major injury issues, are 2-2 in league play, looking up at Lebanon, Crescent Valley and South Albany at 3-1. It’s been a wild season in the MWC, with Silverton scoring impressive wins against both Lebanon and Crescent Valley.

The Trojans, who have allowed just 48 points, are tied with Central Linn atop the Tri-River, which boasts three of the top four teams in the state in the latest OSAA rankings: Kennedy is No. 1, Central Linn is second and Regis is fourth. Kennedy visits Central Linn on Friday, Oct. 16 with statewide bragging rights on the line. “They take a lot of pride in what they do,” second-year Kennedy Coach Joe Panuke said after the emotional Regis win, which included stopping four drives deep in Kennedy territory with interceptions. Angel Mendez intercepted passes at the 10 and in the end zone and Owen Seiler and Bishop Mitchell stopped drives with

picks at the one as the Trojans faced a continual assault from Regis’ complicated offense. “We practiced it and prepped for that,” Panuke said of the series of fakes and options and misdirection the Rams deploy. “You have to look at your keys, trust your coaches and trust your reads.”

“Our defensive line played their butts off,” Lopez said. “We battled and my buddy Angel made some great plays for us.”

“We were a little short-handed, that’s not an excuse at all, but we had a lot of rookies out there,” Foxes Coach John Mannion said after the Oct. 8 South Albany game.. “It kind of showed in the first half. The dam broke, and when it broke, it broke.

Mitchell and Lopez keyed the offense as well. The speedy 5-9, 170-pound Mitchell rushed for 117 yards on 15

“I thought they showed some good resilience, and they played well in the second half. No one hung their head, and

For senior fullback-linebacker Jacob Lopez, who made a series of thunderous hits, it was a little more basic than that.

Soccer: The Silverton girls squad is out to a 2-0 start in MWC play via a 5-0 win vs. Lebanon and a 3-0 victory against Woodburn. The Foxes are 6-1-2 overall, ranked No. 11 in Class 5A and have outscored opponents 34-8. Silverton lost the league title by one point to Corvallis a year ago and seems headed toward another showdown with the Spartans. The two sides close out the league season with a contest Oct. 27 in Corvallis. Silverton’s boys soccer squad, meanwhile, lost 2-1 to Lebanon and 3-0 to Woodburn and is 2-4-3 overall under third-year Coach Kyle Calder. “I think we have a great opportunity

in front of us to be competitive in this, historically, strong league,” Calder said. “Our preseason has prepared us for what lies ahead; now it is just about going out and playing our brand of soccer. We have showed glimpses of our potential, and I think if we can play to that potential consistently, we will be a strong contender for a playoff spot this year.” Leading the way for the Foxes are its back line of defenders Aiden Bahr, Kirk Martinson and Chase Ellis and goalkeeper Ethan Risby. In addition, freshman Isaac Doyle has given the team a spark with his play in midfield. Volleyball: Kennedy and Silverton both are in second place in their respective leagues. The Trojans are 6-2 in the TriRiver, trailing only 9-0 St. Paul. The Trojans are ranked No. 4 by the OSAA, with St. Paul at No. 2. Kennedy is 15-4 overall and had a nine-match win streak broken by St. Paul on Oct. 7. The Foxes are 7-3 in the Mid-Willamette, trailing only 10-0 Lebanon, which is ranked No.

Cross country: Silverton and Kennedy both participated in the Oct. 9 SandelieWest Nine Golf Course XC Classic in West Linn as they continue preparations for district and state competition. The Foxes finished 17th in the boys race, led by freshman Haile Stutzman, who took 69th in 16:29.1. Adrian Parra was 44th in 16:08.2 for Kennedy, which was 35th as a team. Maddie Fuhrman finished eighth in 18:05.2 to lead Silverton to 22nd in the girls team race. Kennedy was 29th, led by Kaylin Cantu’s 40th-place finish in 19:21.5. It’s all about serving This is a beautiful time of year and the foliage is soon to be spectacular. The days have been comfortably warm and the mornings and evenings crisp and cool. I love it. It is also the time when we ramp up for winter activities, the holidays and fundraising for good causes. Here are a few near and dear to my heart. Judy's Party - A legacy of love is a Silverton Chamber of Commerce event to raise money for nonprofits which represents what the late and irreplaceable Judy Schmidt lived for - helping people. The event is 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Mount Angel Festhalle. They will be things Judy loved and cherished including live music, camaraderie as well as great food from local restaurants and a silent and oral auction. Tickets are $35. Please come and toast this amazing woman. Call the chamber at 503-873-5615 to get tickets. The Rotary Club of Silverton and Rotary International are all about "Service Above Self." But when I went to the Silverton Verizon store for technical phone support, Faith Moen helped me. I am not 100 percent sure, but I think she wanted to help me and enjoyed doing so. She smiled constantly, apologized when the phone technician was not lightening fast, laughed at my dumb jokes, and was pleasant from start to finish in a 30-minute interaction. She solved my problem, was highly professional and was absolutely charming. I wish I had been an Army General and could grant her a battlefield promotion. It would have certainly increased her pay grade. Now when I shop local at Verizon rather than drive to Keizer Station, I have Faith.
