Santa’s list

Lights, skates, gingerbread, nuts! – it’s the holiday season The holiday light adventure starts with a trip though the candy cane tunnel that leads to the magical world of floating umbrellas, brilliantly lit flowers and more. There is music and food to enjoy.

By Laura DeVito At first, I wasn’t sure it was actually him but his jolly laugh, rosy cheeks, snow white beard and twinkling blue eyes gave him away, even though he was wearing jeans, a flannel shirt and a baseball cap. A newcomer, I quickly learned Santa Claus’ second home is Silverton.

For those keen on meeting Santa’s reindeer, they will be in from the North Pole to visit Dec. 10 - 13.

And with all the holiday appointments he has in Silverton, Mt. Angel, Scotts Mills and Silver Falls State Park, it’s no wonder he spends so much time here.

Christmas in Scotts Mills

Believing happiness and joy are contagious, Santa Claus shared he thinks there is something magical about living in a small town. And while he wouldn’t share who is on his naughty and nice list, he did divulge where he plans to be celebrating this festive season. Here is his list:

Santa’s first Christmas tree lighting of the year will be Thursday, Dec. 3, 6 p.m. at Scotts Mills’ City Park. In the spirit of giving, guests are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Scotts Mills Food Cupboard.

Christmas at The Oregon Garden

Scotts Mills Elementary School students will present their holiday program atMonday, Dec. 7, 6 p.m. at the auditorium at Silverton High School.

There’s something about twinkling holiday lights that concoct the perfect setting for getting into the Christmas spirit and sharing Christmas cheer. An adventure to The Oregon Garden’s light display should be a must-do on everyone’s list, Santa Claus said.

He is especially excited about the ice skating rink open now to Jan. 3, seven days a week. To work off all the cookies and other sweets he’ll be eating, Santa plans

Silverton Tree Lighting It’s a time-honored tradition for community members to gather in Town Square Park on the First Friday of December – this year Dec. 4 around 6 p.m. to listen to holiday songs, enjoy hot chocolate, pop letters to Santa Claus into the post box and visit with friends.

Santa Mouse and Santa Claus

This year, Santa Claus is making a grand entrance escorted into Town Square Park by the Silverton High School Marching Band. He will then hop onto a ladder of a Silverton Fire Department truck, be lifted into the air and wave a magic wand to light the town Christmas tree at 7 p.m. After the tree lighting, Santa looks forward to meeting with children at the United Methodist Church, next to Town Square Park.

After the tree lighting, community members are invited to visit local shops and restaurants for First Friday. Make sure to bring your Silverton Shop Hop Passport and get stamps for a chance to win prizes. The Shop Hop runs through Dec. 15. Purchasing items at local businesses, is

“What better way to celebrate the Old World flavor of Mount Angel than with a festival highlighting the hazelnut and a German Holiday Markets.”

The fourth annual Mount Angel Hazelnut Fest and German Holiday Market runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While strolling through, have a taste of Oregon wine and beer with foods inspired by hazelnuts. There also will be music, a Children’s Cookie Walk and St. Nicolas Children’s Craft Room sponsored by the Mount Angel Public Library.

Christmas Festival at Silver Falls State Park

Gingerbread House Exhibition

The 38th annual Christmas Festival at Silver Falls State Park is Saturday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the South Falls Historic District.

Be prepared to be dazzled at what can be constructed using some gingerbread, frosting and candy. The Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon House adjacent to The Oregon Garden is hosting a Gingerbread House display. The public is invited to view a collection of edible houses, displayed through Dec. 30. Prizes will be awarded, both serious and silly.

Depending on the weather, there may be snow at the park so make sure to bring gloves, a heavy jacket and good shoes so you can hike the trails. A visit to Silver Falls State Park is like stepping back in time as visitors enjoy cookies and hot chocolate near the fireplace and make crafts including wreaths, holiday cards and ornaments. Admission is free to the event, parking is $5.

The Gordon House will be open for self-guided tours, so guests can see the gingerbread houses, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house, and vote for their favorite small edible house. If you want to try your skills at constructing your own gingerbread house, there will be a Gingerbread House Construction Zone during Reindeer Weekend at The Oregon Garden. The Construction Zone is 4 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 12 and 13. Yummy building materials will be available for guests to try their hand at creating an edible house right on the spot. Refreshments and drinks will be served. The Gordon House is located at 879 West Main St., Silverton.

Dec. 5 a Holiday Pop-up Co-op will be held at Seven Brides Tap Room on First Street from noon to 4 p.m. The event is organized by Silverton’s Local Motive Co-op, a food advocacy group.

“The Silverton Co-op’s mission is to be a community-owned grocery store that provides convenient access to a variety of locally raised or produced foods and other products and to foster a healthy and economically viable environment for our farmers and our community,” group member Jason Codner explained.

Day of Service planned to counter flier Plastic sandwich bags with a piece of hard candy and a flier were left on driveways in some Silverton neighborhoods the weekend of Nov. 14.

What surprised many residents was what the flier said: “Join The Klan And Save Our Land!!!” The flier gave information on how people could join the Ku Klux Klan.

Disappointment and outrage that this was happening in Silverton was share on the Facebook page Silverton Connections, where there were more than 140 comments.

Silverton Police Chief Jeff Fossholm said he received two official complaints. Fossholm said leaving the flier is not a crime. Whoever distributed it is protected by the First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech.

“The flyer does not indicate anything racist or hatecrime related,” Fossholm said.

Fliers also also reportedly distributed in Molalla, Beaverton, Oregon City, Gresham and West Linn.

Fossholm’s advice to the community is to “ignore the propaganda.”

Mount Angel Police Chief Mike Healy said there were

no fliers reported in his city.

Silverton resident Dawn Tacker was appalled by the flier.

“I know that, in theory, hate groups exist in our country. But to see hard evidence in our small town, known for standing up for what is right, was sickening,” Tacker said. “Silverton is at its best when community members are facing challenges. All you have to do is watch how the town rallies to help when a family loses their home to fire, for a recent example.

The KKK values do not reflect Silverton’s. I have no fears about the KKK gaining any kind of significant following here, yet we all have a responsibility to stand up for what is right.

Tacker said to counter the KKK propaganda, she and others are planing a Day of Service to coordinate with the nationwide efforts on Martin Luther King Day, which is Jan. 18.

“Our goal is to come together as a town and serve in ways that reflect Silverton’s tremendous kindness and generosity. Everyone is welcome to join,” Tacker said, adding there is a public Facebook group called “MLK Day of Service - Silverton, OR” where people can find more information.

A public workshop will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Silverton Community Center, 421 S. Water St. The city of Silverton is taking a look at the community’s long term goals and aspirations.

Everyone is invited to participate in Envision Silverton 2035. The only prerequisite is an interest in the future of Silverton.

“These kids are civic-minded,” Palmer said. “They are ready to jump in and do community work.”

The Interact Club is a service club for youth 12 to 18 years old. Each club is sponsored by a Rotary Club, which provides support and guidance. Interact’s name is a combination of the words “international” and “action.”

But Silverton Rotarians Janet Dalisky and Kyle Palmer know it’s something more.

They have spent time volunteering with the students and have insight into what motivates them.

On this day, candles are lit throughout the world for one hour in each time zone creating a light of remembrance that encircles the globe for 24 hours.

What amazes Dalisky and Palmer is how the local club has grown in the last six years.

They attribute the growth to its advisor, John Mannion, and to the leadership of the club’s presidents over the years.

“This club is really student driven,” Mannion said. “We just provide guidance.

The Interact students know they are doing good things for the community.”

Mannion said when he started as advisor there were about 10 members. Now, there are 57.

“It’s been fun to see the club grow and to see how the students are involved,”

Dalisky said. “We are hoping they all become Rotarians.”

“There has been a real difference in the club since John became the advisor,” Palmer said.

“Any community is as good as the people who live in it,” Mannion said. “I think these students are civic-minded and know it’s important to pitch in.”

Silverton High Principal Mark Hannan said he thinks Mannion, who is also the school’s football coach, has been instrumental in the club’s growth.

“The kids want to follow and learn from him,” Hannan said.

It’s also the way students are at Silverton High, he said.

“This student body gets the whole payit-forward mentality,” Hannan said, adding not only do the students do things to benefit their community but also for far-reaching organizations like Medical Teams International.

Dalisky serves as the liaison between the Interact and the Rotary Club. She sends group texts to students about upcoming events such as Christmas caroling and receives texts from the club’s co-presidents, seniors Nichole Beyer and Adrienne Metzger.

Both Palmer and Dalisky said they are impressed with co-presidents’ leadership abilities and enthusiasm.

“She was going to a meeting so I decided to go with her,” Metzger said. “This club is totally service based and it’s a way to give back to our community. I feel really blessed to grow up here and it feels good to give back.”

Beyer decided not to participate in sports her sophomore year, leaving her time for new activities. Her brother, Eric, was a senior and encouraged her to join Interact. When she was a junior she met Dalisky and that meeting inspired her to help the club grow and do more.

“I think as teenagers we often get caught up in the trivial affairs of life,” Beyer said.

Dalisky has plans for the students to help with the Homer Davenport Community Festival and delivering Rotary-purchased dictionaries to all fourth-grade students in the Silver Falls School District. In addition, before graduation the Interact Club members beautify the high school, including spreading bark dust.

“I think as teenagers we do a lot of stuff for ourselves,” Metzger said. “This club allows us to do stuff for other people.”

The Interact Club recently donated 758 pounds of food to SACA. It’s also written and delivered Valentine Day’s cards to local nursing homes.

“Our club is easy to join,” Metzger said.

“All you have to do is show up. It doesn’t require much of you and what you get out of it depends on how much you put into it.”

By Tanner Russ There is a reason the volunteer and staff firefighters of the Silverton Fire Department take on an extra project every December.

“Every child should open up a gift on Christmas and every child should go to bed with a full tummy, that’s our goal,” Silverton Fire Capt. Ed Grambusch said.

For 15 years, the Silverton Fire Department has organized the Toy and Food Drive. They need assistance from the community to reach their goal. They will be touring neighborhoods and knocking on doors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

“Silverton Area Community Aid, they really depend on our food drive during November and December,” Grambusch said. “They get an awful lot from us. It feeds a lot of needy people in our area. The Silverton Zenith Women’s Club, we give all the toys to them, and they have a huge wrapping party at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Church Street. It looks like Santa’s workshop,” he added.

Grambusch explained why the firefighters step up for different roles in community service during the holidays.

Donations of unwrapped toys and nonperishable food items are prized.

The food will be given to Silverton Area Community Aid; the toys to the Silverton Zenith Club for its Tree of Giving program.

“Community involvement doesn’t stop with making sure we’re all right as a community, it’s taking another step to make sure that everyone is accounted for in that community, and if they have a need they’re accounted for,” Grambusch said.

The city of Silverton needs to replace its aging water treatment plant. The city of Mt. Angel wants to improve the quality and taste of the water it provides its residents. The East Valley Water District has concerns on how it will water its crops and how to store water to use in the summer months.

Pudding River Watershed Council Coordinator Anna Rankin is working with Buchholz on the letter of intent.

The question is, can the three groups – along with other partners – find a solution to meet all their needs? That’s what they are working to find out.

Representatives from cities of Silverton and Mt. Angel, the East Valley Water District, Oregon Water Resources Council, Pudding River Watershed Council and Clackamas County Soil and Water Conservation District met on Nov. 16 to learn about placed-based integrated water resources planning. The group discussed inviting the cities of Aurora, Woodburn and Hubbard to join in, as well as Clackamas and Marion county commissioners.

The meeting to discuss collaboration on future water supply development and management was facilitated by Terry Buchholz of Integrated Water Solutions.

It’s goal was to determine if there was enough interest to submit a letter of intent collaborate to the OWRC in December.

“We can’t do it by ourselves,” EVWD board member Duane Eder said. “We are looking to partner.”

“The cost of the infrastructure is what brings us to the table,” Silverton City Manager Bob Willoughby said.

Harmony Burright with the OWRC explained place-based integrated water resources planning helps Oregon communities plan for current and future water needs. The state plans to award $750,000 in grants to three or four water basins to conduct studies.

“Investments in collaborative planning will lead to better coordination between different water interests and will provide pathways for partners to identify actionable solutions to water challenges,” an OWRC document states.

“Up-front planning can help communities prioritize needs and assemble the necessary support and resources to fund

“Each individual has a part to play in protecting water resources,” Rankin said. “The development of an area plan for water resources is important because water is a shared natural resource. Since there are many different demands, a leadership group has to be developed to make informed decisions regarding integrated water resource management.”

Lauren Reese, who works for Integrated Water Solutions which has the EVWD as one of its clients, said the EVWD unanimously voted at its board meeting on Nov. 16 to participate and support the collaboration process.

“It’s really encouraging that stakeholders with diverse interests and needs are willing to participate in a collaborative process for the Pudding River,” Reese said. “It is even more encouraging that each of the parties committed to a substantial amount of work and coordination in the next three weeks to ensure a letter of intent makes it to OWRC by the Dec. 7 deadline.

“Each member seems very interested in ensuring the success of the potential collaborative process,” Reese added.

Mt. Angel City Manager Eileen Stein said the first task is to complete the letter of interest.

“The objective of the overall study would be to examine the needs of water users in the basin (which include) municipal, irrigation and environmental, i.e. habitat) and determine what’s needed to address these needs, and in what coordinated and collaborative fashion,” Stein said.

She added it’s important all the different parties in the Pudding River Watershed Basin work together because the aquifers in the basin are all related.

“The actions by a water user in one part of the basin can impact a water user in another part of the basin,” Stein said.

The letter being drafted, she said, is a first step to indicate a grant application from the parties may be forthcoming. Grant applications are due in January.

By Melissa Wagoner Love is the word most commonly used by Dan Lliteras when he talks about baking at the newly opened Silver Falls Bread Co. in Silverton.

“I love the daily rhythms and routines,” he said. “I love the feeling that I get when I have a great bake. I love knowing that I can redeem a less-than-great bake the following day. I love providing nourishment to my community, to offer the simple comfort of good bread. I love when a loaf comes out a little too funny looking, and when, during a quiet moment, I cut it into thick slices, slather it with good butter, and eat it while it’s still hot from the oven.”

Lliteras’s passion for baking began as a craving for the quality of fresh baked bread he had access to while living in Chico, Calif.

“I was buying bread from a guy named Dave Miller, who, it turns out, is a world

After leaving Chico for Santa Barbara, he missed truly great bread and decided to take matters into his own hands by learning to bake.

“I learned I really like making bread, and I started making enough for the five people I was living with,” he said.

What started out as a hobby became a part-time job when he joined a bakery in

Jackson, Wyo. Later, he decided to make a change; move to Oregon and open his own business.

“I settled on Silverton because it’s central to this big area where there isn’t anyone making the kind of bread I want to make, and it’s the lovely kind of small town I want to live in,” Lliteras said.

“I’ve gotten plenty of feedback that folks would like to buy right at the bakery, and I understand that people are hungry for that authentic bakery experience, where you come in and smell the bread and browse all the goodies and treats, but that’s not really what I’m doing here.

I’m hyper-focused on making the best possible bread. I feel like I have a lot of ground to cover in that regard and running a retail space is a distraction I don’t want to deal with.”

Lliteras said bread should taste great and be a pleasure to eat, it should look beautiful, “seductive even, and it should be good for you.”

He said he makes sure that all the ingredients used in his breads are of the highest quality, including flour from Bob’s Red Mill.

“Bob’s is great because it’s local, employee owned, and they offer a wide selection of organic stone milled flours,” he said.

Lliteras believes the bread he makes is a healthier form of the bread than that found in most supermarkets.

Although still new to baking and to Silverton, Lliteras has come to feel at home in both his vocation and location.

“I would really encourage people who’ve been avoiding gluten, if they don’t have a medical condition like Celiac Disease, to try some of my bread and sincerely evaluate how it makes them feel.

“I’m making a very honest loaf of bread here; organic, long fermentation times, zero additives, not dissimilar from the breads that sustained most of our ancestors for centuries, millennia even,” he said.

Sweet deal

Family tradition of raising bees grows into Homestead Honey Co.

By Kali Ramey Martin Mike Roth has had bees in his family since the 1800s. His great-grandfather had more than 80 hives from 1894-96 in the Canby area.

“I guess you could say I have bees in my blood,” Roth said.

He developed his own love for bees when his dad kept them in the 1960s.

“It was like I realized one day nobody’s telling me I can’t anymore. I’m getting some!” Roth said. He began to read everything he could get his hands on. His first year he bought two packages of bulk bees, caught a handful of wild swarms and ended up with about 25 working hives, which have multiplied.

“Bees are fascinating. Industrious. Fun. They just make sense to me,” Roth said.

“My dad quit before I was old enough to help, but I kind of just fell in love with the smell of bees,” Roth said.

When his family moved back to the Willamette Valley from the Oregon Coast he bought an empty hive. When a wild swarm moved in, he observed them with great fascination.

“I used to kind of just open the lid, watch them and run,” he chuckled. “But I loved it.”

He is currently working between 90 to 95 hives spread around a few “honey yards” in the area. His bees spend the early spring working pollination contracts for local growers of radish seed, apricots, cherries and sometimes berries, before being brought back to the yards in late summer for the honey harvest. In years past, his bees have even traveled down to California to help with the almond blossoms before making their way home for the local crops.

Roth extracts his honey on the first of August before getting his bees settled in for the cold months. This year he harvested around 100 gallons of honey, despite the

dryer summer, which usually means a smaller yield.

A big believer in maintaining the flavor nuances of honey through small batch extraction, Roth packages by the jar rather than larger gallon buckets, and avoids specific classifications like “clover” or “fireweed.”

“Honey should have an individual flavor,” Roth said. With one of his honey yards near town and one in the country, he gives his bees access to a wide variety of flowers. The town bees tend to produce honey with a strong flavor and darker color. The country bees make a lighter honey with more depth of flavor, he explained.

Greater than his love for keeping bees and making honey is Roth’s passion for education. He can often be found at elementary schools or the Silverton Farmer’s Market sharing the magic of beekeeping.

“I love my bees, their personalities and I love what I do.

But most of all, I really enjoy talking about them,” he adds.

I mean, the truth is, he really was kind of a jerk at times.

He was moody and selfish and all I knew was that when he came around, we had to walk on eggshells.

He was always upsetting my mom and as a kid, I didn’t care to have much to do with him.

But the reality is, people are neither entirely this nor entirely that.

And there was so much more to him I was never able to access because I was too busy being mad at him.

The most unfair thing about grandparents is that we only get to see a snapshot of their lives.

We only get them for a certain period of time, and in that time, we rarely see the whole picture of who they are.

How can we?

We are too young, too self absorbed, too immature.

Often, by the time we lose them, we’re still grappling with who we are ourselves, much less taking time to learn from the people around us.

No, we see them singularly, for who they are to us, and sadly, miss out on the wealth of wisdom their life story has to offer us.

Beyond being the occasional “jerk” I thought he was, my grandpa was also an extraordinarily intelligent man with a wealth of knowledge and life experiences.

He traveled the world and lived in a time that I will never be a part of. And when he passed away a few years ago, I realized I’d never get to ask him about any of it.

I never got to ask what it was like to be a Yellowstone park ranger in the early 1950s.

I never got to hear how it felt to serve in the U.S. Navy on a South Pacific

Several members of Silverton High School’s FFA team recently competed at the 88th National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Ky. FFA Advisor Scott Towery said the Vet Science Team competed in the National FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event (CDE) and received a silver placing.

The team members are Jasmine Hill, Ashleigh Main, Ericka Fitch and Katelyn Brazelton.

One of 42 teams participating in the National FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event, the Silverton students had to apply veterinary science knowledge and skill in practical settings as well as identify breeds, parasites and equipment.

Towery said the vet science team placed 25th in the nation.

The high school’s Milk Products team also received a silver placing or 16th overall in the nation, Towery said.

Towery explained CDE teams and individuals are divided into bronze, silver or gold placings, with gold being top 10 to 11 in the nation, silver usually falls 12th through 30th or roughly in the middle and 30th through 50 usually bronze.

“We did have some students fall into the gold individual category,” Towery said. “Jasmine Hill on the vet science team and Janelle Kuenzi on the milk products team.”

Holly Kuenzi was one of 48 participants in the National FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event. Kuenzi was awarded a Bronze emblem.

“We had two American Degree recipients receiving the highest degree bestowed upon an FFA member. They are Logan Kuenzi and Meghan Stadeli,” Towery said.

The Kennedy High football team is one win away from the first state championship in school history.

The Trojans (10-1), who were runnersup in 1989, 1991 and 2009, tangled with (11-0) Heppner on Saturday night at Hermiston High in a game played after Our Town’s presstime.

Kennedy, ranked No. 4 by the OSAA, took out Irrigon 53-12, Burns 42-28 and Stanfield 34-20 to advance to the title game. The Trojans used a punishing ground game to down Stanfield on Nov. 21 at Liberty High in Hillsboro in the semifinals.

Quarterback Brett Traeger rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown and running backs Jacob Lopez and Bishop Mitchell added 111 and 108 yards, respectively.

Lopez, the workhorse with 23 carries, scored a touchdown.

Traeger also sparked the offense through the air, hitting 5 of 11 passes for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He hit Mitchell on a 36-yard touchdown and Jack Suing on an 18-yard score. Mitchell completed the scoring for the Trojans with a 17-yard interception return for the final score of the game. Mitchell totaled 186 yards, counting rushing, receiving and returns.

Dylan Arritola (7.5 tackles), Owen Seiler (6.5 tackles) and Tom Schmidt (6 tackles) sparked the defense, which forced three Stanfield turnovers. Mitchell finished with two interceptions and Christian Larios recovered a fumble.

Turf update: The campaign to add artificial turf and remodel McGinnis Field at Silverton High has reached the halfway point in terms of cash donations and grants, athletic director Greg Kaatz said. The group has $225,000 in donations and grants. “A special thanks goes out to Jeremy McCart and Silverton’s Les Schwab Tire Center for their support in the amount of $25,000,” Kaatz said. In addition, the project is teaming with K&E Excavating of Salem to work on the foundation for the field.

The project is looking for community assistance for some in-kind donations.

Yes, the Foxes had a tremendous season with an 11-3 Mid-Willamette Conference record and a spot in the Class 5A quarterfinals, but it turns out it wasn’t the best season in 40 years. Jim Bingham, who started the volleyball program, has advised Our Town that his 1975 and 1991 teams both reached the state semifinals. In 1975, the Foxes, who were playing in Class 3A, then the highest classification, won their quarterfinal match against Grants Pass before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Beaverton. Bend defeated the Foxes in the match for third place. Karen Fleming and Rene Hatton of the Foxes were named second-team all-tournament. In the 16-team 1991 tourney the Foxes opened with a win against Glide and downed Burns in the quarterfinals. Silverton again was defeated by the eventual champion – this time it was Henley – in the semifinals and lost a hard-fought match for third place with Lakeview in which the third set was 15-12. Linda Redman of the Foxes was a first-team all-tournament selection.

The 5K event starts and finishes at the Festhalle and $27 day-of-the-race signups and bib pickups for those who signed up early starts at 9 a.m. The race starts at 10 a.m., with finishers receiving a bag of hazelnuts and admission to the Hazelnut Festival.

Rep. Gilliam shares health news To all our friends in District 18,

I have been recently told that I am likely one of the thousands of Americans who may be afflicted with ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The neurological disease is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

While ALS can be difficult to diagnose, lacking a single definitive test, I am experiencing difficulties with speech and a loss of coordination.

I’m fortunate to have access to quality health care including the kind support of the ALS Center & Association Chapter in Oregon.

Preliminary evaluations were inconclusive and we’ve been pursuing procedures that may identify or rule out conditions that mimic ALS. I’m especially grateful to be mobile and active and we’re looking forward to positive results from upcoming tests and therapies.

I still marvel as I walk (perhaps not as smoothly now) through the rotunda of our State Capitol to our district office.

For the 17th year, Silverton’s Zenith Woman’s Club is sponsoring the “Tree of Giving.” Christmas trees will be displayed at five locations in Silverton now until Friday, Dec. 11. Locations include: Rite-Aid, 333 Westfield St.; Safeway, 301 Westfield St.; Hi-School Pharmacy, 406 McClaine St.; Immanuel Lutheran Church, 203 W. Main St. and the United Methodist Church, 303 N. Church St. Each paper ornament has clothing sizes for a qualified child in the Silver Falls School District. A Grin at the End

The third law...

It used to be said that nothing will make you a bigger liar you than your dog or your kid.

“How about trying Anchorage?” I said. “They’re on the same time zone.”

“Oh, my dog would never do something like that,” you’d say, just as your dog did that very thing — right on the neighbor’s front yard.

“Yeah, but I don’t really care much for Anchorage. They don’t have Fairbanks?”

“Apparently not,” I said.

Similarly, you’d say, “My child has never done anything like that,” just before the police officer called you up to inform you that your precious son had been seen spinning doughnuts in his car in the supermarket parking lot.

It occurred to me that there’s a third corollary to those two laws. It goes something like this: Whenever you are trying to show someone something on a computer, it won’t work. The other day I was helping a friend get going on her brand new iPad. Boy howdy, that corollary was in full control. We managed to get it going by pushing the little deely-bobber on the top and then by tapping in her secret code on the whatcha-hoozer.

I got out my phone, switched around some settings and — nothing. I started to feel as though we were in a Wifi black hole. I changed tactics and went back to the basics.

“This is the clock,” I said. “See , you can tell what time it is anywhere in the world.”

That was the extent of the computerized cooperation for the day. The first challenge was to get on the Internet.

“Sure,” I said. “Name any city and it’ll tell you what time it is.”

“Oh, that’s easy,” I told her. “All you have to do is go to Settings and touch this and do that and voilà.”

“OK, how about Fairbanks, Alaska?”

Nothing. I tried it again. Still nothing. Then I really tried to pull a rabbit out of my hat.

“No problem, you just type in F-A-I-R-B-A-N-K-S and there you ….”

“Not to worry,” I said. “I can set up our own personal

We spent an hour and a half with the iPad. We did get the email working, but then we got a message back: “Don’t use that email address. You’ll get some lady in Orlando.”

All I could think was, “Hey, we got someone. Who knows, the Orlando lady might be nicer than the one we’ve been trying to contact.”

We continued to work on things such as downloading podcasts and books.

“You know, a podcast is kind of like a radio show,” I said.

“Oh, that’s nice,” she said. “Kinda like turning on the radio.”

“And look, here’s how you can download a book,” I said.

It didn’t work, because the blankety-blank Wifi wasn’t working.

“Oh, that’s OK, I can just go to the library,” she said.

“They have lots of books there.”
