Something to celebrate
More than a job
Two women complete careers in public service Retirement plans: I have grandkids to play with; we want to do some traveling; my husband’s looking into buying a small trailer. We can take the kids to the beach or lake … and I love to go fishing. I once caught a 40-pound Chinook. And then I want to try my hand at volunteering.
By Brenna Wiegand We know there are a lot of people retiring this summer, especially public employees who seem to do so before July 1. Our Town was recently alerted to the impending retirement of two women – a letter carrier and a teacher – who’ve gone the distance and beyond in their professions and dedication to their community. You can imagine how enjoyable it was to meet these two – 68 years’ service between them, and we thought you’d like it, too. Chances are you’ll be inspired – and schooled – by them.
Rose Boen Were it not for the recommendation of her brother Bill at Bochsler’s Hardware, Rose Boen probably wouldn’t have landed the Silverton mail carrier job 27 years ago. Rose, mother of four, had been patching together part-time jobs when her sister gave her the idea.
The best part of her job: The customers – they’re great. There are customers who always make you laugh; those who want to feed you all the time … On of my favorites, Norma Jean Branstetter used to give me a couple candy bars almost every day! Rose Boen retires after working for the U.S. Postal service for 27 years. Patty Potter retires for working at Evergreen Elementary School after 41 years.
“Leon McCammon was the postmaster and he was really skeptical about hiring a woman,” Rose said. “So he called up my brother Bill over at Bochsler’s, who told him I was outside unloading cases of paint.” Calculating how many miles she has
Quality Dental Care in a Friendly Environment
traveled delivering the mail would be quite the challenge. Her downtown beat extends out to Home Place and the Mark Twain area. That’s 650 active addresses and, step by step, about seven miles a day. Boen shared what’s next for her and a few other tidbits she learned along the way.

customers. After Mr. Deckelmann retired as a teacher at Silverton, he’d often come out to the mailbox to chit-chat. He had a lot of life experience and I came to consider him a really good friend. One day he was not there; he’d passed away. I had quite a problem with that. Also I think I just have a strong frame and a good work ethic. I have 2,118 hours of sick leave built up.
Patty Potter In today’s world, what Patty Potter has done is if anything unusal and definitely remarkable. Not many people can say they stayed in the same job and at the same place. Patty spent 41 years teaching at Evergreen Elementary School. It was Patty’s first grade teacher, Mrs. Cook, who instilled in her a lifelong desire to teach. From middle school on, Patty said school provided opportunities to job shadow, and in high school she started a little preschool. Patty finished college in three and a half
Silver Creek Natural Health
years and secured a position at quaint, historical Evergreen School, just around the corner from her home. That came in handy recently when she hosted a massive fun day for the class – composed of third, fourth and fifth graders – bouncy house, Slip ‘n’ Slide and all. A few days before, they went to Barnes & Noble where each child selected several books for the school library with $2,200 earned through their annual jogathon. That’s just one example of how she taught, always wanting kids to cherish the time in her classroom and at school. Retirement plans: I want to take care of my two grandchildren for my daughter; she teaches up at Butte Creek. I’m involved with the historical society, my church – and next spring we’re taking a three-week trip to Europe. For those starting out in teaching: You need from day one to make clear to the students what your expectations are and
let them know you believe in them; that you are approachable. And be consistent: if you say it you better do it. Otherwise you’ve lost your class. The best part: My kids! It’s so refreshing to see them every day and when someone is struggling, you’re there for them. That’s a really big responsibility and I take it very seriously. Hanging in there: It takes a lot of hard work. Kids need to know when they walk in the door what my expectations are and I teach to that; it’s the attitude of our whole school. My personality is that No. 1, I’m very organized; and 2, I’m a fixer so whatever situation I walk into I make an evaluation and go in and fix it. I’m also sort of a perfectionist. Challenges: The behind the scenes bookwork; the expectations put on us at the district level and feeling like we have to teach to the test...and getting forms, assessments and evaluations done in the way they are asking they be done – and you can only do one grade a time.

Fountain facelift By Brenna Wiegand Few will deny the fountain in Coolidge McClaine Park is a tad rundown. The current Ford Family Foundation Leadership program cohort aims to change that. The group’s leadership training culminates by carrying out a public service project. The class targeted the fountain. The foundation will match $5,000 to get the project started. “This project will enhance the overall beauty of the fountain with mosaic art guided by professional artist Lynn Takata who did the large mosaic at the Salem YMCA,” class member Laurie Boyce said. “Once completed, the fountain will become a lovely and lively place for residents to gather in the hottest days of summer.” During the Great Depression, the city of Silverton added a special attraction to the Coolidge McClaine Park: a simple wading pool for smaller kids to splash around in while older siblings played in the creek. With the building of the swimming pool,
Community members work to add art to the park
the creek was used less – and the wading pool fell into neglect. It was nursed along during the tenure of Lee Martin Rumely, a local-born city of Silverton employee who took special pride in the city’s infrastructure, including providing TLC for the old fountain. In 1988 when his life was tragically cut short at 32, the city and his friends erected a memorial plaque and repurposed the wading pool into the Leo Martin Rumely III Memorial Fountain. Now Ford group members have connected with his family, and they, too, are excited about the project. “The collaborative process, including kids, can result in aesthetically strong artwork and a source of community pride,” artist Lynn Takata said. “Silverton has such a rich tradition of public art. The beauty of mosaics is that someone can spend two hours making a small piece that will be integrated into the design. Ours will include flora, fauna and images of the East Valley.”
How to lend a hand with the project It’s going to take a team to get the fountain project completed. Here’s how you can help: Labor: Transporting stuff; pressure washing, making phone calls. Contact: Cindi Bates, Cindi@ CommunityFountainMosaic.com. Supplies: Lots of items are needed. Visit website at www. communityfountainmosaic.com to learn what’s on the list. Create: Make mosaic pieces; workshops will be held 1-3 p.m. June 18 and 25 at the Silverton Senior Center: 503-873-3093. Or attend a “Art in the Park” session for making and/or installing mosaics at Coolidge McClaine. There’s a five-day session July 20-24. 1 - 3 p.m. Donations: Make a donation or host a fund-raiser. Email Laurie@
CommunityFountainMosaic.com for information or send a tax deductible contributions to: Community Fountain Mosaic c/o Jerald D. Steffen, CPA, 502 N First St., Silverton, OR 97381. Upcoming events: Silverton Mayor Rick Lewis will speak at the fund raising campaign kick-off Sunday, June 21, 2:30 p.m. during the Silverton Hills Strawberry Festival in the park. Seven Brides Brewing is donating 10 percent of food sales on June 28 and Aug. 9 to the fountain’s beautification; from 4-8 p.m. on both days. A silent auction will be held. New date By James Day There is a whole hop load of new at this year’s Oregon Garden Brewfest. The Silverton suds fest, in its 11th year, moved from its usual late April slot to Father’s Day weekend. The event now offers a third tent with free shuffleboard and other games, and the Father’s Day move allows The Oregon Garden to work with the Silverton Hills Strawberry Festival on Sunday. Folks can carbo load on strawberry shortcake, then take a shuttle to the Brewfest. What is not new is that the festival will have upward of 60 brewers, cidermakers and meaderies on hand, pouring more than 130 beverages, with continuous music and food offerings. The Oregon Garden Brewfest is noon to 11 p.m. Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Minors are only welcome Sunday. Guests must be 21 years old and older Friday and Saturday. The cost is $15 per day, includes mug and 5 tasting tickets. The
Oregon Garden Brewfest adds new features to popular festival price goes up to $20 after 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. See www.oregongarden. org/events-brewfest-tickets for information on advance sales and threeday and VIP packages. “We have moved Brewfest to June in hopes of better weather and to more fully showcase the beauty of the Garden,” said Brittney Hatteberg, marketing manager for The Oregon Garden. “We also get to enjoy the summer solstice during the event, so another great benefit is longer daylight hours, which will enable guests to enjoy a beautiful evening in the Garden.” Brewers agree. “The excuse to get out of the city and see such a beautiful part of Oregon is also most certainly one of the things that makes this event stand out,” said Eric Steen with Hopworks Urban Brewery in Portland. TASTING TEMPTATIONS: Here is a look at 10 of the most interesting offerings at this year’s Brewfest.
Eddie India Pale Lager: Georgetown Brewing of Seattle got the idea for this 6.9 ABV 60 IBU offering when some fresh Mosaic hops “fell in our laps.” Crisp in character, yet still with the citrus and bitterness of an IPA. Tepache: Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider of Portland used fresh Costa Rican pineapples, piloncillo (cone-shaped unrefined sugar), three spices --- and no apples – in this traditional Mexican drink. Prefunk Pale Ale: Worthy Brewing of Bend used all Oregon hops, including Citra, which gives a citrus kick to this 6.0 ABV, 50 IBU ale. Pigwar White IPA: A refreshing twist on “a tried and true favorite” of Hopworks of Portland. Hard red spring wheat from the San Juan Islands gives it a biscuity malt character and classic wheat beer haze. Crony: This Northwest brown ale from No-Li Brewhouse of Spokane derives its piney character and tropical fruit aromas from Simcoe hops.
Gigantic IPA: “Never given an inch” is the motto of Gigantic of Portland, which uses Cascade, Centennial, Crystal and Simcoe hops to form a “citrusy hop confluence.” Oregon Garden Lavender Saison: French saison yeast and lavender from The Oregon Garden was used in this offering from Buoy Beer of Astoria. Emily’s Red Ale: This hometown favorite by Seven Brides of Silverton “is as smooth and balanced as a scarlet sunset.” Cherry Chocoholic Baltic Porter: Rusty Truck of Lincoln City uses black hull-less barley and three specialty malts as well as 84 pounds of hand-pressed Willamette Valley cherries per 10-barrel batch. Va Va Voom NW Vienna Lager: Deluxe of Albany used strict rules of Reinheitsgebot, Germany’s beer purity law, in producing this lager for the Best Brew Challenge. German malt gives it its red color. It also features Northwest Ultra and Santiam hops.

Capturing the beauty By Mary Owen Following in his father’s footsteps, Neal “Peace” Yasami became an artist.
Say Hello
And this Father’s Day, his 19 original oil paintings of Silver Falls will be installed in the South Falls Lodge. A reception and slide presentation at the lodge, in the park’s Historic District, is set for 1 to 3 p.m. June 21 at the lodge. The event is free and open to the public.

An artist-in-resident at the state park, Yasami created all the hand-hewn frames used for the paintings from former park signs. The Eugene-based artist will be working again at Silver Falls State Park in the fall to complete 10 major works for the Silver Falls Lodge and Conference Center. A graduate of the University of Hawaii and the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco with a master’s of fine arts, Peace grew up in a house filled with paintings. “My father was and is an artist,” he

said. “As a child, I helped him execute his larger works. I started drawing and painting early. My first oil painting was done at the age of four, not that it was any good. But throughout my schooling, I was always selected for special art classes.” Peace began college as an engineering student and switched to art after taking the requisite art history and appreciation class. “My first day of class was a Friday afternoon, and I was exposed to David’s Oath of the Horatii and Gericault’s The Rafts of the Medusa,” he said. “I was blown away. I didn’t know people could paint like that. “After class, I marched across the campus and slid a paper under my engineering advisor’s door,” he added. “It read, ‘Please switch me to art,’ and I’ve never looked back.” Although he has traveled around the world, Oregon remained close to his heart. He returned to help his aging mother – and to painting.

No Water Emergency? Low Water Pressure? No Problem–Shiloh is Here to Help!
Silver Falls State Park’s artist in residence “I found though the work I was producing, while good, lacked the romance that comes from an authentic experience with nature,” Peace said. “I’ve been in love with the outdoors all my life. I knew I needed to get out and paint it.” He decided to see Oregon firsthand by bicycle, transportation that complemented his environmental conscience. “The next decision was obvious, where to first?” he said. “I had this gut feeling, a strong urging, and perhaps even some precognition that Silver Falls was important. However, I knew nothing about it. I’d been there when I was 7, but, I can’t explain it, I had to go there.” One experience tripped into another, finally culminating into what he calls “one of the best experiences of my life – a fivemonth art-in-residency at the park. My ‘Thoreau Moment,’ if you will,” he said. Peace paints what excites him, which he admits is pretty much anything in nature. “I love the grand panorama, the radiant
glow of a sunset, and raking light,” he said.

“The difference between a photo of a waterfall, barn or bridge and a painting of it is almost magical,” she said. “A painting can emphasize the more elusive qualities such as a reflection on the water, the shimmer of leaves by a waterfall, or light streaming through a window in an old barn. The display of paintings in the lodge has really impressed visitors with the beauty of all the areas of Silver Falls State Park.”

July 4th parade changes
The Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth of July Parade is going backwards this year. No, not the participants. They will be marching or driving or walking face forward. It’s just the parade route that will be in reverse. Due to construction at Kennedy High School, where the parade normally begins, organizers found it necessary to reverse the route, said Randy Stockdale, one of the organizers of the parade. On Saturday, July 4, participants should meet on Garfield Street, on the east side near the intersection with Church Street. Lomeup will continue back toward the Mount Angel Festhalle, Stockdale said. “The parade will follow the normal route in reverse and finish on Birch and Marquam near the high school,” he said, adding next year the parade will once again start at the high school.
Stockdale is looking forward to the parade with its military honor guard, the firetrucks, children, classic cars, the floats and tractors. While the parade begins at 11 a.m., Stockdale said anyone who wants to be judged as a parade entrant should sign in no later than 10 a.m. “The parade was phenomenally large last year,” Stockdale said, encouraging people to arrive early. The fireworks will be at Kennedy High School starting 10 p.m., Stockdale said, however spectators should plan to be at the baseball field. “With the renovation to the new track, we don’t want to risk amber on the track,” he said. Volunteers are needed to help with the parade. If you are interested in helping out or need more information, call Stockdale at 503-873-1790.

The Man About Town
Why yes... There will be a test The Man is back! Whew, with all the hot air and hullabaloo over the school board election and all the associated opinions, this dopey column kept getting pushed off the pages of this local paragon of journalistic excellence, so let's catch up, shall we? After 10 great years in beautiful downtown Mount Angel, we moved the palatial, global headquarters of Our Town and Mt. Angel Publishing to the corner of Oak and Second streets in Silverton... Is that the only business movement you ask? Nooooo, not by a long shot, Sparkey. In fact, it's high time for another installment of The Man's Business Musical Chairs, so buckle up and cue the music.... Preparations are underway for Rite Aid's new building down the hill at its new location at Westfield and McClaine. Holland Collision was bought out by White's Collision and will be at 207 Jersey. Silverton Mini Storage has taken over Mini Storall of Silverton out on First Street. A Dutch Bros. at Westfield and Silverton roads and O'Reilly Auto Parts slated for C and Water are approved, construction to start soon.... On Main Street we have Howard Hinsdale Cellars for sale, Kevin
Joe & Dana Giegerich, Brokers
Cobb from the aforementioned Cellars moving to Palm Springs. Anna Kuzmin's The Gathering Spot is moving from First Street to Main and Water after Villa Gusto went.....away.... The Main St Bistro is moving across the street to the Wolf Building, there are new owners at the Towne House, Splinters and Silverton Barber Shop closed, White Oak Gallery opened, Jason Frielinger changed Radio Shack to Odd Fellows Games and Electronics, Outlaw Steel moved to Bend and MaPs Credit Union's new building nears completion so they can move across the street as well. Dixon Bledsoe and Lisa Santana have started a new real estate office in the office in the back of The Main Street Bistro and may move into the Oak Street space of Apples and Oranges when it moves to what will then be the former Main St Bistro location. The former location of A&I Jewelers on Oak Street has been divided in two and rumor has it will house a sushi restaurant and a woman's health business...along with a creperie next door... and don't forget Willamette Valley Pie has started renovations and will be moving out on Eska Way...Nope, move along, nothing to see here...

Fox baseball
Best season since 1989 ends in state round of 16
It was a banner year for Silverton baseball under first-year coach James Rise. The Foxes advanced to the round of 16 in the state playoffs for the first time since 1989. Silverton, which finished 13-15 overall after a 1-8 start, hosted Ashland in the Class 5A play-in round and took a 5-4 win vs. the Grizzlies. The Foxes lost a 15-7 slugfest against eventual state champion runner-up Liberty in the round of 16. “We had talked about what it would take to host a play-in game and the impact a home game would be as opposed to a game on the road in Southern Oregon,” Rise told Our Town. “Being able to host Ashland was a great accomplishment for these guys and allowed our seniors to win the last game of their career at Davisson Field, which was important for me.
Crater on May 27 and a 7-3 win vs. Hillsboro on May 29 to advance to the semifinals in Pendleton.
was named first-team all-state and shortstop Dustin Meyer, who will play college ball at Pacific University in Forest Grove, earned second-team honors. Green batted 483 with four homers and 33 RBIs, leading the squad in all three categories. Meyer hit .402, led the Foxes with 35 runs scored and seven stolen bases and struck out just eight times all season.
“To give those guys the proper sendoff was great, and something I hope they remember for a long time.”
Softball: Silverton advanced to the Class 5A semifinals before falling to eventual state runner-up Pendleton on June 2. The Foxes, who overcame a brutal nonconference schedule, surged to an 18-3 record in their Mid-Willamette Conference championship season.
Foxes designated hitter Anders Green
The Foxes scored a 9-2 win against
The Foxes, 21-9 overall, also did well in all-state honors, snaring two positions on the first team and two on the second. First-team picks were senior catcher Kayla Stocker (for the second year in a row) and freshman shortstop Maggie Buckholz. Sophomore pitcher Alex Molloy and freshman outfielder Maggie Roth were named to the second team. College track: Former Silverton athlete Stephanie Wells, now a junior at Montana, qualified for the NCAA championships with a javelin throw of 152-7 at the regional meet in Austin, Texas. Wells, who missed national last season by one spot, took the 12th and final qualifying spot this year by one inch ahead of Iowa freshman Kayla Hochhalter. Wells threw at NCAAs in Eugene on June 11 after Our Town’s press time.
Also competing at the Austin regional was Oregon State redshirt sophomore Morgan Anderson of Silverton. Anderson ran 4:28.77 in the 1,500 heats but did not advance. Anderson had the top time in the event for the Beavers this season, a 4:24.55 at the Oregon Relays on April 17. Meanwhile, another former Silverton athlete Chase Davis of Eastern Washington cleared 15-8 and took ninth in the pole vault at the May 15-16 Big Sky Conference championships in Cheney, Wash. All vaulters from fourth to ninth cleared 15-8, with places established on fewer misses.

Pajama fun run debuts in Silverton By Melissa Wagoner Derek Zinser doesn’t care much for running. When he tells people he’s not a runner, it makes them laugh. “I don’t like to run unless I am getting chased by a bear or some other large animal with teeth,” Zinser said. He does like planning events, especially fun runs. “I make my 5K events something that anyone can do. They are not timed events. Participants can walk, jog or run. I want these events to be fun and unique.” A Silverton High School alumnus, Zinser is planning Oregon’s first Pajama Rama 5K.
The race starts and finishes at the high school with after parties taking place at Mac’s Place, for those 21 and older, and Silver Creek Lanes, for those 20 and younger. All participants will receive a free game of bowling as well as post-race snacks and the possibility of winning one of 40 donated prizes. Zinser hopes the race proceeds will be enough to provide two scholarships to high school seniors or provide for a high school program in need, as well as providing a year’s worth of landscape care for the Silverton Senior Center. Zinser hopes for 250 to 500 participants for this year’s race.
“When I think of Silverton, I think of a beautiful, quiet, sleepy town. This is where pajamas come in. It is a perfect idea for this wonderful town,” he said.
“The Pajama Rama 5K is going to be a blast and will have something for all ages. It is like no other 5K event in Oregon,” Zinser said.
The race is Saturday, June 27, 6 p.m. at Silverton High. Participants will receive neon bracelets and necklaces to wear over their pajamas.
The cost for ages 5 and under is free; 6-14 $15; 15 and up $30. To register, call 503-593-6276 or visit www. pajamarama5k.com

The Forum
Heroes and superstars Molly is, as my favorite and only mother-in-law the late Carol McDonald use to say, a veritable “whirling dervish.” She is a nursing student at George Fox, works for the Family Birthing Center at Silverton Health, carries a near 4.0 grade point average, and as a friend describes her, “Molly is ridiculously smart.”
Two of the most overused words in the English language are superstar and hero. People who make idiots of themselves in today’s plethora of bad television are labeled superstars. People who work hard, provide for their families as best they can, and keep between the lines are heroes. I have little respect for the former and loads of respect for the latter. But Molly and Alex Newman come really close to personifying the terms Hero and Superstar. Alex is a sergeant who just finished his second tour of duty in the Middle East with the U.S. Army. He arrived home last month from Afghanistan. He was greeted by a wife who adores him and a little five-year old who missed her daddy terribly because she remembered him. Another daughter is three, so she didn’t remember him readily from her “terrible two’s.” The youngest of three daughters is just one, and she was two weeks old when he deployed. Needless to say, but he is a fresh face to little Teagan, a novelty to Kylee, and a God-Send for Savannah. When we speak of the brave men and women who serve our country during a time in the world that borders on the cusp of both frightening and depressing, it is customary to say “Thank you for your service” to the
military member and a token appreciative comment to the member’s spouse and family for “holding down the fort.” But in this case, both of these young people are rock stars. In Alex’s case, two tours in the danger zone with a risky job ended with his safe return to his loving family and a good job with the Department of Corrections, intact, proud of his service, and glad to be back home in Silverton. There was a lot of time in getting reacquainted with his children and reconnected with Molly. A yearlong separation can take its toll. Re-orienting to civilian life again, three small children instead of a gang of troops in less-than-optimal living conditions, and a wife who is both proud of her husband and ecstatic that the “cavalry” has arrived, is no easy task, It is one that just takes time.
Molly and Alex are the kind of heroes who people should be watching on television. They are great role models, give back to their community, know the importance of hard work and cherish and treasure their friends and family. They are real heroes and superstars, at least to those people lucky enough to know them. Thank you from the bottom of three little hearts for a job well done.
