“It forces you to go out,” Richard continued, detailing the many unusual treks he and Debbie have taken in the hopes of seeing unusual birds, like the long-eared owl – an elusive species that generally roosts in dense foliage.

“It looks for burned stumps,” Debbie said of this small gray bird whose call sounds like a toast to “three beers”.

“I didn’t realize how much was oral instead of visual,” Debbie said of her own introduction into the world of bird vocalizations. “Calls are mainly for contact and alarms and songs for attracting a mate, keeping a mate and territory [disputes],” she said, listing some of the facts she’s learned in the past ten years.

getting a peek. “It’s amazing whoever saw them,” Debbie pointed out. “Because these owls are pretty stealthy.” But even stealthy birds can often be heard, which is where another birding app, Merlin Bird ID, comes in handy. “There are 400 birds based on sound,” Richard said of the site’s ever-growing, citizen science-based database.

“Spring and summer there are more visitors,” Debbie said, describing why birding in popular tourist locations can be challenging. But it’s a tradeoff because, as she said, “In winter there are less birds.” There also tends to be more inclement weather, which can make viewing certain birds all but impossible. “If you get really high winds, it’s hard to hear them,” Debbie explained. “And in the rain, they hunker down.”

“A lot of times there are multiple songs and multiple calls and that’s been really challenging.”

But even on a day with few sightings, the couple still has fun getting out of the house.

Also challenging is the silence and stillness required to see some of the shyer species.

“You get to be outdoors,” Richard said of the reason he began joining his wife in the hobby. “You go places you wouldn’t otherwise go – places you wouldn’t think about.”

“They tell you to sit for five to ten minutes and the birds will come out,” Richard laughed. “But it’s not natural to be quiet like that.” It can also be tricky if there are others

Assistant City Manager Alissa Angelo was appointed as city manager pro-tem by the council at its Sept. 20 meeting. Angelo, who has a bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University, has been employed with the City of Stayton since 2001. “Jensen Strategies will be gathering input from Council, staff and the public to develop a candidate profile to be adopted by the City Council,” said Angelo, who does not intend to apply. “We expect the position to be advertised in early March 2022.” Jensen Strategies will host a public input meeting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 13 at the Stayton Community Center.

Freres Lumber honored for contributions By Mary Owen Freres Lumber Co. received the 2021 Community Applause Award, a statewide award sponsored by Oregon Business Magazine and Oregon Banker’s Association. The Community Applause Award, which is given to an Oregon business in acknowledgment of significant service and contributions to its community, was presented to Freres during a banking industry event held Dec. 6. Once a business is nominated an independent panel of judges reviews each nomination and votes on the winner. Since the award’s inception, 44 Oregon businesses have been recognized. Mike Jaeger with Columbia Bank in Stayton nominated the Lyons-based company for this year’s award. “We would not have the quality schools, hospital, library or most other amenities we currently enjoy, nor would we have the employment opportunities and overall standard of living we are afforded, without the presence of Freres in this community,” Jaeger said. “We are so grateful for everything Freres has done and continues to do for this community.” As part of the award, OBA provided Freres with a $1,000 check payable to the Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund in its honor. In 2020, when devastating wildfires roared through the Santiam Canyon – including Freres’ company land – the Freres family came alongside Santiam Hospital to establish the Santiam Canyon Wildfire Relief Fund. Since then, SCWRF has generated more than $3.7 million to assist local families and businesses impacted by the wildfires. “We were motivated to help because so many friends, neighbors and employees’ families were traumatized by the Labor Day 2020 fires,” said Rob Freres, president of Freres Lumber. During the damaging ice storm at the beginning of this year, which once again

wreaked havoc on homes and businesses in the Santiam Canyon, Freres said the company was “at the forefront, providing clean-up equipment and manpower to help restore the doubly-shaken communities.” In addition, the company provided hundreds of thousands of dollars this past year to help build the new Santiam High School in Mill City and was a major contributor to a significant remodel of Regis High School in Stayton. Freres was also instrumental in bringing Family Building Blocks to the Santiam Canyon. Founder T.G. Freres began a charitable foundation and a profit-sharing retirement plan in the 1950s to help improve the lives of friends and neighbors “with whom we work, recreate, and worship together as a community,” Freres said. “Succeeding generations have never lost sight of T.G.’s generosity and thoughtfulness toward our Santiam Canyon communities,” he added. In the company’s newsletter, Freres called this time of year a “season of gratitude.” “We want to take a moment to reflect and shine a light on everything we are grateful for this year,” he told readers. “We are also grateful for the creativity of our employees to create and build our own parts due to supply chain issues,” he added. “Their hard work and dedication have helped us reach so many of our company-wide goals for 2021.” Freres thanked customers for their continued support and for purchasing the company’s products “during hard times,” and thanked the community for standing by the Lyons-based lumber company. “We are blessed to be a part of this community and to live here,” Freres said. “We were surprised and humbled to receive the Community Applause Award. Community service is very important to our family and company. We could not be successful without the countless efforts of our Santiam Canyon community members,” he added. For almost 100 years, Freres Lumber Co., Inc., has been a major supporter of numerous regional projects. Through the Freres Foundation, nearly $175,000 is donated annually to community causes.

Police departments raise money for cancer patient care

By a very slim margin, the Stayton Police Department earns bragging rights over the Aumsville Police Department in the No Shave November contest to raise funds for the Santiam Hospital Can Cancer program. Aumsville PD raised $1,238.75 and Stayton PD raised $1,288 to capture the win. “Our hats off to them as they beat us by a hair – $46.25,” said Richard Schmitz, Aumsville’s chief of police. “The real winner here is Santiam Hospital’s Can Cancer program, who, between our two departments, is receiving $2,523.75.” Voting for best beard, worst beard, lumberjack beard, Santa beard or grayest beard is still going on the City of Aumsville’s Facebook page. “We thank our community as well as the Stayton community for all of your support for this fundraiser,” Schmitz said. “We look forward to a rematch next year with Stayton PD.” And the votes are in for Stayton winners!

“This will assist many in our local community who are fighting cancer with utilities, groceries, and fuel,” she said. “We appreciate you all so much!” Melissa Baurer echoed Dwyer, saying, “Thank you for supporting the Can Cancer program. Dominant Eagles finish 13-2 in boys soccer

For the Stayton High boys soccer squad, it was a case of picking the wrong day for the ball not to go into the net. The defending state Class 4A champion Eagles entered the playoffs 13-1 and ranked No. 1, but fell to Ontario on the opening weekend on penalty kicks after battling to a scoreless draw in 100 minutes.

Cascade volleyball had the best combination of field success and classroom success. The Cougars won the Class 4A state title and were 10th academically, with a 3.71 GPA.

“We just missed everything we could miss,” coach Chris Shields told Our Town. “I am not sure I have ever been a part of a game that was so one-sided and lost, either coaching or playing, but that is how it goes sometimes.”

A Grin at the End

Clocks, calendars & choppers It’s that time of year for the “To-Do” lists to come out. My personal list is the same this year as every other year: lose weight, win the lottery, travel more and screw around less. That last one is the toughest. My DNA is chock full of genes that enable me to shift into neutral at the drop of a recliner. But I have another “To-Do” list. It’s not for me, but for our public servants in Washington, D.C. At the top of the list is getting rid of daylight saving time. Twice a year, the federal government – the U.S. Department of Transportation, to be exact – does the old switcheroo on our clocks, and our sleep cycles. There’s no reason for it. It’s more of a reminder of who’s in charge. All I’m saying is Congress needs to pass one little law banning daylight savings time. Easy-peasy. Oregon’s Legislature did pass a half-baked law a couple of years ago aimed at getting rid of the time switch, but, as is so often

What we currently have is a mutation of a calendar that was started many moons ago. It’s terrible. Some months have four weeks; others have five weeks. If you receive a salary, you are underpaid on some months and overpaid on others. It makes no sense. If we had 13 months, each would be the same. It’s not rocket science. Every time I suggest this, some whiz kid asks: What would the 13th month be called? That’s easy. It would be between

Holidays are another problem. Because Congress is not exactly populated by problem-solvers, we may have to help them. As you know, Congress, along with the president, declare holidays. Some, like Thanksgiving, are on a Thursday every year. My question: Why Thursday? Wouldn’t it make more sense for it to be on a Friday? Come to think of it, why not celebrate every holiday on a Friday? Nothing is more frustrating than trying to work around a holiday plunked in the middle of the week. Those of us who work for a living would appreciate that tiny favor. One more item. When I was a kid, I read a book about the future. It said we would all have personal helicopters instead of cars. We would also work four hours a day – and four days a week.

You see where I’m going with this. I don’t know about you, but I’ve almost never worked a 40-hour week in my life. Maybe I’m a sucker. And I for sure haven’t worked a four-day week, although I once worked at a newspaper where the reporters worked four ten-hour days. And I really, really want one of those helicopters. I think about that every morning as I sit on I-5 – also known as the Worst Interstate in America. The traffic crawls along, starting and stopping for no reason. Yet we put up with it, because the problem-solvers in Salem are just as effective as their counterparts in Washington, D.C. So that’s my “To-Do” list.
