Something Fun

Episode drop By Mary Owen A new podcast sheds light on the communities along Oregon’s North Santiam River, from Aumsville to Idanha. “Santiam Local brings our audience weekly episodes with the most interesting and engaging conversations about the people, projects and stories shaping our community, culture and way of life,” said Nicole Miller of Word’s Out PR. Miller hosts the show, which is produced by Michael Calcagno of Calcagno Media. The show is recorded in Stayton and digitally distributed automatically to listeners’ mobile devices weekly. “We hope people understand our vision with Santiam Local, which is to create a community of like-minded, engaged citizens who share the common values of caring about our neighbors and the future of the North Santiam River region,” Miller said. “Michael and I both share an interest in building vital communities. We both have education, training and

New podcast brings Santiam region into digital media feed

Santiam Local You can subscribe to the podcast on: • Google Podcasts (Google Play) • Apple Podcasts • Spotify • or at SantiamLocal.com experience in journalism, and we have complementary skillsets in interviewing, reporting and sharing stories.” Miller and Calcagno met a year ago when he moved to Stayton and joined the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce. “The chamber director noted that we are in similar professional fields, so she introduced us,” Miller said. “Eventually, Michael pitched the idea to me that we start a podcast focused on the local area. He said, ‘I’ll be the producer, and you’ll be the host.’ I knew right then that this was a go. It was that next step I’d been looking for in both my career and in the community.”

Since the focus of Santiam Local is the stories of local people and project shaping their communities, Miller and Calcagno plan to shine a spotlight on topics they think matter to the area, from news about small businesses and nonprofit groups to local government issues and community events. The duo has recorded four episodes to date, with early episodes introducing the podcast and who’s behind it. Also featured were interviews with Revitalize Downtown Stayton and a local author. “We’ll soon share updates on the Detroit Dam construction project, bring you candidate interviews in the race for House District 17, and more exciting topics,” Miller said. “Topic ideas are welcome, too. Anyone can listen to episodes on-demand online at SantiamLocal.com and easier than that, we’re on your mobile device too.” When considering the business structure for this podcast, Miller and Calcagno agreed they’d rather not have the show

interrupted with ads and opted instead for a member-model format. “The Santiam Local member model means that rather than selling advertising, we’re relying on listener support to keep the show going,” Miller said. “For as little as $4 a month, listener pledges help the podcast grow. They also help keep Santiam Local ad-free, and members receive exclusive access to members-only perks and deals.” Members receive exclusive content, behind the scenes + Ask Me Anything (AMA), episode transcripts, prioritized feedback on episode ideas and featured guests, and as a welcome gift: chocolate chip cookies. “We want to focus on getting the highest quality episode topics before we build more,” Miller said. “Stay tuned because we’ll only continue to grow from here!” To suggest a topic, email Santiam Local at hello@santiamlocal.com.

Looking Back

Lifetime legacy By Mary Owen A full house of people turned out last month to pay tribute to a man who has been epitomized as the spirit of Regis at a ceremony between the boys and girls basketball games. “He had to be smiling at all that Joe Spenner happened that night,” said Regis High School’s Mike Bauer, of the Jan. 24 induction of former custodian Joe Spenner. “He was arguably a legendary figure at Regis for almost 40 years.” Bauer was talking with longtime Regis supporter and parent George Gerspacher, who mentioned how nice it was that Regis had recognition displays in its student center for impactful teachers, including Steve McGrew and Don Heuberger. “He wondered if such a display might be appropriate for Joe,” Bauer said. “New Regis St. Mary Principal Candi Hedrick enthusiastically embraced the idea, and it was decided that a recognition display would be appropriate for Joe as well. In addition, she thought that we might have a Joe Spenner night at a basketball game to unveil the new display.” Spenner passed away on Christmas Day in 2016 at the

According to Bauer, in later years, Spenner traveled to India several times to assist Catholic priests in funding and building churches and a dispensary. He was an active volunteer at St. Boniface and at yearly Right to Life rummage sales held at St. Joseph’s in Salem. “When Joe could no longer drive, he could be seen walking to daily Mass until almost 90 years old,” Bauer said.

During his time at Regis, Bauer said, Spenner most likely held the record for attending the most sporting events. “Whether it was football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, track, baseball or softball regular season or playoffs, Joe could always be spotted in the crowd in his distinctive green Regis boosters coat with the colorful fighting Ram logo,” he said.

Something to Celebrate

The greater good By Mary Owen The Distinguished Service Award is given by the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce to an individual that demonstrated outstanding community service in the Stayton-Sublimity area, whose dedication and service provide a lasting impact on the local communities. The award recipient for 2019 is Erin Cramer, a family practice physician’s assistant at Sublimity Medical Clinic. Cramer was nominated for his leadership and stability within his local clinic, as well as “his selfless commitment to our community, volunteering his time as the Varsity football medic for Regis High School, serving the North Santiam School District board, and being instrumental in advocating for our kids and serving our local communities,” according to the chamber. “I’m really surprised to receive this award,” Cramer said. “There are a lot of people in our communities who contribute a great deal of their time

and energy to making this a better place to work, learn, play, and live. They inspire me to want to do the same, and to be nominated while surrounded by so many others who would be deserving winners is humbling and a little challenging. It makes a person want to live up to those expectations, to aspire to be even better.”

getting out of the chair,” he added. “A little effort goes a long way, and others generally see effort and step up as well. I think we all want to make our lives a bit better, and often need a nudge or a worthy cause. Some of us are on the sidelines until a simple ask, and then we take a plunge.”

Erin Cramer

As a PA, Cramer said he takes care of the very young to very old, “hopefully making a concrete difference in their lives. “I volunteer time helping young athletes at Regis High School, with the Stayton High School Booster Club, the NSSD Board of Directors, and in the past, I’ve helped coach kids in what is now the Stayton Soccer Club,” he said. “It’s amazing how much time a person can carve out by turning off the TV and

Cramer said, “There’s a great and fun time to be had interacting with others while doing something for the greater good.” “Erin Cramer is highly deserving to be recognized with the Community’s Distinguished Service Award,” said Andy Gardner, superintendent of the North Santiam School District. “His time in our community has been marked by service to multiple causes. Since joining the NSSD School Board in 2019, he has enriched our discussions with his own knowledge and commitment to the

young people of our communities. ” NSSD Board Chair Mike Wagner added, “Erin has brought new talents to the NSSD Board. His intelligence and wealth of experience has brought a new perspective to the issues. I believe he cares deeply about kids and is concerned that NSSD help them become the best person they can be as a result of their school experience.” “Erin has been an active member of our fantastic Booster Club. He has been instrumental, along with Randy Forrette, in turning the Stayton Boosters into what is arguably the best Booster organization in the state,” Stayton High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Darren Shryock said. “I do know that service is not selfless. It gives me back more than I put in. I get back a sense of accomplishment, of pride, of warm fuzzies from doing these extra things. That makes me want to continue. I’m kind of addicted to it, if I’m being honest.”

Something to Celebrate

Red carpet moment By Mary Owen Retaining charm while updating and upgrading its facilities earned the Star Cinema the First Impressions Award for 2019 from the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce. Because the owners made major interior and exterior improvements and modern enhancements while retaining charm, the theater is a major asset to the Stayton downtown core, a nominator said. The First Impressions Award is given to a business or organization within the Stayton-Sublimity area that has completed major exterior improvements or remodeling or major landscape enhancements to its location or has worked to improve public exterior spaces through remodeling, clean-up, beautification and enhancement. “I just recently re-joined the Chamber now that I’m working in Stayton again, instead of just Dallas,” said owner Jeff Mexico. “So, it was a pleasant surprise to be recognized so soon.”

Star Cinema receives First Impressions Award

Mexico was the general contractor and designer for the remodel, which took place in October, and performed a lot of the work himself. Star Cinema’s facade received new neon, paint, lighting, poster display modifications, box office counter and exterior doors. The lobby received new hardwood flooring throughout, new runway carpeting and new toilets. The snack bar was removed and rebuilt with all new counters, electrical, plumbing, extension of the snack bar for more room and a ductless AC unit to help keep it cool with the new ovens. “Everyone is loving the fresh look of the outside and really loving the new snack bar with the many food options we now offer,” Mexico said. “And of course, the option to have a beer, cider or a glass of wine has been a big plus.” Mexico, who re-opened the theater in 2002, wants to upgrade the sound system before summer, followed by seating when funds are available.

“RDS is very excited that Star Cinema is being recognized for the great work he has done under the Oregon Main Street Revitalization Grant,” said Steve Poisson of Revitalizing Downtown Stayton. “His goal was to ‘make it shine’ like when it opened in 1949, and we think he has met his goal.” Poisson said Mexico is the first business owner to complete his work under the grant and believes the rest of the block will follow throughout the year. “Not only that, but the old Rumors and Our Town buildings are now undergoing renovation,” Poisson said. “We plan to have as many downtown owners as possible follow Jeff’s example of bringing back the character of our small town. Star Cinema deserves the First Impressions Award as it strikingly shows how community effort can dramatically impact the look of our downtown.” An honorable mention for First Impressions goes to Stayton Hobby Hut, which came in second in what SSCOC reported was “a very close race.”

“As a chamber, we are pleased with the domino effect happening in our local Stayton community,” said Carmélle Bielenberg, president and CEO of SSCOC. “This year a number of area businesses and building owners took it upon themselves to update building exteriors. The Star Cinema has done an excellent job with both their interior and exterior improvements, with the help of a matching grant, making a positive and inviting impact on the downtown area. “We would also like to give a shout out to Kick Start Coffee, Not So Shabby, Mary Artz Tax & Business Services, and the number of other local businesses who are transforming our city through exterior projects and enhanced curb appeal, the most noticeable being Stayton Hobby Hut,” Bielenberg said. “We commend these and all businesses who choose to take pride in their appearance and by doing so help make a positive impact on the community at large.”

The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce 2019 Large Business award goes to Modern Building Systems in Aumsville.

“We are proud to be on the team to build the new Santiam Canyon School District Junior/Senior High School,” he added. “We are looking at potential new product offerings and exploring expanding our solar panel array on our factory building.”

The award goes to a chamber member business or organization for excellence in products or services, customer service, and contributions to the communities’ economy and vitality. economy, buying services and materials. He also commended the company for helping create “the new workforce working with students from a variety of schools and support of vocational training.” “This award is well deserved to generations of the Rasmussen family,” Harville said. Rasmussen said he was humbled by the recognition. As a family-owned company, he said he views his employees as such. When at Little League games, at the park or in stores and at other places around town, he loves running across “our teammates here at Modern.” “There are many great people and companies in this region doing great things and to be viewed in high regard is truly an honor,” Rasmussen said. “My family cares very much for our employees, clients and this community, so it’s nice to see others recognize our efforts.”

White Water Signs & Graphics commended for service

The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce Small Business award winner for 2019 is White Water Signs & Graphics. The award honors excellence in products or services, customer service, and contributions to the communities’ economy and vitality. Owner Dave Shelton has been in the signs and graphics business for more than 40 years, providing signs, banners, logo stickers and printable marketing materials for local businesses throughout the region. He is also the official banner producer for the Santiam SummerFest. “I am honored to receive this award,” Shelton said. “I have been in the sign business for 43 years this April 1, beginning my career in Hillsboro in 1977 at the age of 19.” Shelton has crafted signs for businesses and organizations throughout the region, including Stayton’s Boldt, Carlisle & Smith; The Lovin’ Oven; Performing Arts Center and chamber and Lyons City Hall and library.

Shelton also receives kudos for his community service, including past president of the Detroit Lake Recreation Area Business Association (DLRABA) and the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce, and past vice president of the Mill City Lions Club. “Dave Shelton is a Santiam Canyon jack of many trades and a friend to everyone,” said Ken Cartwright with KYAC Community Radio. “Almost every sign, festival and event has had the golden touch of Dave Shelton!”

Rex Mittelstaedt, owner of Rex Images Promotions in Mill City, called Shelton “very capable of producing any sign or banner on a first-class level.” Mittelstaedt used Shelton’s skills to produce his storefront and window signs. “I see his work all over the Santiam Canyon. Mucho kudos, Dave!”

Hoops changes

Eagles, Cougars thriving under new coaches It’s been a season of change for Stayton and Cascade basketball, and thus far the changes are working out just fine.

TIS’ THE SEASON TO CHOOSE A SMARTER INSURANCE

Three of the four varsity hoops jobs turned over after last season: • Wendi Nyquist took over for Darren Shryock with the Stayton girls. • Aaron Muhic succeeded Joe Kiser with the Stayton boys. • And Calvin Molan is running the Cascade boys after Steve Ball stepped down. The Cascade girls program remains in strong hands with Mark Stevens, once a state champion and five times a state runner-up. Now in his 30th year with the Cougars, he started coaching the squad before Molan was born. Here is how the teams stood heading into Jan. 31’s first round of the Oregon West Conference rivalry games between the two schools. • The Stayton girls are 12-4 overall, 4-1 in league and ranked No. 8 in Class 4A by the OSAA. The Eagles’ lone league loss came against top-ranked Philomath. • Stevens’ Cougars are on the move. After a slow start Cascade has won four consecutive league games to tie Stayton at 4-1. Just as with the Eagles, the Cougars’ lone league loss was to Philomath. Cascade is 9-8 overall and ranked 17th in Class 4A. • Molan’s Cascade boys squad is 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the Oregon West. The Cougars started 8-0 and took two out of three in a tournament in Ketchikan, Alaska. Their lone league loss was to No. 2. Philomath, which also is undefeated in boys play. Cascade is ranked seventh. • Muhic has Stayton lurking one game behind Cascade at 3-2 in league. The Eagles lost by three vs. Philomath and by six at Woodburn, which is 4-1 in league and tied with the Cougars for second. Stayton is 12-4 overall and ranked 14th. Looking ahead to the playoffs it should

Our Town Santiam

Auto be noted that only the top two finishers in the Oregon West and the other five Class 4A leagues automatically qualify for the playoffs. There are, however, eight at-large berths that are determined by the OSAA rankings. Looking ahead it also should be noted that the second round of the rivalry doubleheader between Stayton and Cascade is set for Feb. 25, the final day of the regular season. Cascade will host, with the boys playing at 5:30 p.m. and the girls at 7 p.m. Seems to me a lot is likely to be at stake that night. Put it on your calendar – if you haven’t already done so. Wrestling: Cascade has seven wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes, led by Mauro Michel, No. 1 at 113 pounds with a 25-0 record and Kane Nixon, No. 1 at 145 and 18-2 overall. The Cougars are ranked fifth as a team in Class 4A. Also ranked in the top 10 for Cascade are Noah Thompson (2nd, 152), Matthew Clark (6th, 200), Joe Baxter (10th, 145), Kaden Lindquist (10th, 170) and Wayon Wymore (10th, 182).

Johnny Sylva (tied for third at 182) is the top-ranked Stayton wrestler, with teammate Elijah Howard ninth at 126. Looking ahead the Eagles and Cascade will compete in the regional meet Feb. 21-22, with Stayton hosting. The state meet is the following week. Santiam, meanwhile, has two wrestlers in the top 10: Brody Davidson is sixth at 160 and Tyson Patton is eighth at 113. A Grin at the End

Get out there

It’s the human connections that may change your life

One of the things I always looked forward to when we lived in Minnesota farm country was election day. That’s when everyone in the township headed for Godahl, a wide spot in the road on the way to Sleepy Eye. We’d go to the community center and cast our votes. It would take two hours, sometimes more. Why? The actual voting took about 10 minutes‚ five if you’re like me and write in the names of former presidents and our dogs and cats. The rest of the time was spent catching up on important topics that ranged from the price of corn to how I had been doing since I got back from “doctoring” at the Mayo Clinic. I loved this. The act of doing our civic duty as voters brought us together, even surrounded by the wide open farm fields. Community. That’s a term I often hear, but I feel like we are many times robbed of the opportunity to actually be one. For example, there was a time when

home and put it in the mail. I get to vote but that’s all. I don’t get to see how the community as a whole is getting along, and I miss that.

people would go to town to buy items such as clothes, tools and equipment. Along the way, they’d run into a friend or acquaintance and strike up a conversation. Then they’d stop by the coffee shop, grocery store or barber shop. The odds were, every stop would produce another encounter. That, I believe, is how people are designed, as social animals. Sure there has always been a fair number of loners, but nowadays many people are forced into solitude. Here’s what I mean. Take voting, for example. Instead of gathering at the polling place and visiting with neighbors, we now fill out a ballot at

Many people also shop online these days. They buy clothes, equipment – even dog food – online. Their purchases arrive at their house, and they don’t have to talk with anyone. What a sad way to live. It’s as though only a handful of institutions promote a sense of community. They include celebrations held in the towns in this part of the valley each year, and the local schools. In fact, I’d wager that the schools do more to promote a sense of community than any other institutions. They draw families together with a common interest in children and their education. Other get-togethers that promote a sense of community are centered on the library, swimming pool and churches. I urge anyone with an interest to join in.

Sometimes, we just need to make the effort to be sociable, to be part of the community. It can have a huge payoff. Some years ago I avoided going to meetings and other events as much as possible. I worked long hours and preferred to spend my free time at home. One time, I was invited to a peace officers association dinner. I had helped start a Crimestoppers-type program and the state troopers and police wanted to give us a pat on the back for helping them. I tried like crazy to find someone else to go the dinner for me. In the end, though, I went. My life has never been the same. I met the woman who would become my wife at that dinner. We’ve been married 34 years. Carl Sampson is a freelance wrier and editor. He lives in Stayton.
