Julie Hilty exemplifies the building blocks of community service
By Melissa Wagoner
what Family Building Blocks looks for in a high quality employee, but actually showed her as overqualified – which is why they not only hired her, but created a whole new job that utilized her copious skills.
Julie Hilty is a doer. When her two boys were small she joined a Mom’s Club and volunteered with the YMCA – all while being a stay-at-home mom. “I’ve always just loved being involved,” she explained. “I like to be productive.” During her tenure with the Mom’s Club she spent time volunteering for Family Building Blocks in her hometown of Salem. She became familiar with their mission of educating and empowering parents to parent more successfully. And so when the time came for her to step away from her home and back into a full-time career, they were the first place she looked to for employment.
“I was originally the Outreach Coordinator,” Hilty recalled, a position which eventually brought her to Doris’ Place – the Stayton branch of Family Building Blocks – when it opened six years ago. And one of her first moves was – as a part of a new business in town – to join the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a group that’s already active,” she said. “That’s where I get a lot of our supporters, because I show up.” Hilty didn’t just show up, however, she got involved, volunteering for a host of chamber activities including Summerfest preparations, numerous charity events, food booth shifts and Diaper Drives, which is why Hilty was recently awarded this year’s Rising Star Award.

Helping Hands
More to give By Mary Owen Through their month-long, end-of-theyear food drive, Stayton High School students collected more than 11,000 pounds of food for the local food bank. “The spirit is strong and the message is clear,” said Ann Kehler, manager of the Stayton Community Food Bank. “No one should go hungry! Not on our watch! Not at this time! Not in our town!” The SHS food was picked up and delivered to the food bank by the Stayton Fire District. “The majority of the donations from SHS have come from the Skills USA class, a program which provides opportunities for students to learn and practice personal, workplace and technical skills enhancing career readiness,” said Janine Moothart, communications consultant for the North Santiam School District. “The Skills USA club president, Austin Gladwill, wanted the club to go all out to see how much the club members could contribute.” Moothart said students went door to

door throughout the community seeking donations of canned food and boxed goods for the food bank. In addition, she said class members asked for any cans and bottles to turn into cash for purchasing more food. “We cashed in about $1,800 worth of cans and bottles,” said club advisor Dale Sunderman. “It was fun watching the students shop and do the math in order to determine the best buys for their hard earned money.” This years’ class set a record for the most pounds of food contributed to the SHS food drive, helping to surpass the 8,000-pound goal set by the students in December, Moothart said. “A total of 22,582 pounds of food was received in the 2018 Food Drive,” Kehler said. Senior Miranda Fuentes said she really enjoyed organizing and helping with this year’s food drive. “To see so many students and staff
participate during the drive warmed my heart,” said Fuentes, who is also organizing other public engagement events, including blood drives. “I loved knowing that we were contributing to a good cause. To see that my school is capable of doing such a great thing really makes me appreciated being a part of this community.” Stayton Lions Club is primary sponsor of the annual food drive, joined by SHS students and community agencies and organizations that placed collection barrels for food donations, Kehler said. Stayton Fire Chief Jack Carriger, coordinator for the Lions Club, said, “The local schools do an amazing job and provide 90-95 percent of the goods gathered during the month-long drive. The kids get really excited and work hard to make this significant contribution to their communities. All of our local schools get involved.” For the success of the drive, Kehler credits local schools, churches, businesses, services organizations, the Stayton Public Library,

A melt-in-your-mouth treat By Melissa Wagoner
Cubed steak is that cut of beef characterized by its square-shaped indentations, used to tenderize the meat. And although I love a good chicken-fried steak now and again, my freezer is often full of this particular cut long after the rest of the beef is gone. But a recent quest for a solution to this dilemma has turned up a marinade, which I have adapted to a stir-fry, that promises an end to the too much cubed steak problem forever. It’s melt-in-your mouth good and will keep even kids coming back for more. Mix together soy sauce, sugar, juice, oil, onions and garlic in shallow pan. Marinate the meat in the sauce – covered and in the refrigerator – overnight or up to two days. Remove the meat from the marinade,
reserving the liquid, and slice thinly on the bias.
Come see our 40,000 sf Showrooms
Pour marinade into a small saucepan and simmer until reduced by a third. Remove from heat and set aside. Heat a wok or large pan on high until very hot. Working in batches, add two tablespoons of oil to the hot pan and fry the meat until just cooked through. Set aside in a large bowl or on a platter. In the same pan, add another two tablespoons of oil and fry each of the vegetables individually until crisp tender, adding them one at a time to the bowl or platter with the meat.

When all of the vegetables have been cooked, serve the meat and vegetables over white or brown rice with the sauce as an accompaniment. Enjoy!

Eagles flying high
Boys, girls hoops a combined 11-1 in league
The Stayton boys basketball program has put together a dominating run in the first half of the Oregon West Conference season.
in the championship hunt after a gritty 39-31 win against Cascade. It was the first win against the Cougars for thirdyear coach Darren Shryock.
The Eagles, who are ranked fourth in Class 4A, went 6-0, with the closest matchup a 63-51 win at Philomath on Jan. 4. Stayton’s average margin of victory is 22.5 points per game, with the team closing out the first-half run with a 62-38 road win Jan. 25 against rival Cascade.
“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” Shryock said. “Anytime you have a rivalry game you know it’s going to be tough. This was a good learning experience for us. It was loud and we faced some adversity.”
The Eagles are winning with an exquisitely balanced offense. Stayton has the big men, 6-8 center Kaleb Anundi and 6-7 Riley Nichol, but they also have a threatening outside game featuring sharpshooters Jordan Butler and Jacob Axmaker. Logan Classen and Ben Rash take care of the ball and hound opponents defensively and Bryce Whieldon and Micah Jenkins unselfishly do a little bit of everything. Anundi scored 14 points, Nichol 13 and Axmaker 12 (all on 3-pointers) in the win against Cascade. “When we post up low the guards have been stepping up and shooting well,” Anundi told Our Town. Anundi said he was pleased but not surprised at the 6-0 league start. “We are doing what we should be doing,” he said. “This is what we are capable of.” “We’re one team with one head,” Nichol said. “We trust each other to make the right pass and the right shot. Don’t

Marri Martinez, the squad’s leading scorer and rebounder, was in foul trouble throughout and left the game with her fifth foul with 2:25 left and just four points. Stayton led just 34-29 and the game was as close as it had been in the second half.

overthink. That’s the way we practice it.” Cascade coach Steve Ball called Anundi and Nichol “the most formidable big man combo in the state” and added that “they are executing their offense and defense at a very high level of efficiency.” The games tend to get harder in the second half of the season. The Eagles hosted Philomath on Jan. 29 after Our Town’s presstime and also have a Feb. 8 showdown at No. 3 Woodburn. Head coach Joseph Kiser clearly recognizes the challenge.
But the Eagles rallied for 5 consecutive points to put it away. KJ Nyquist scored on a drive on a pass from Holly McGill. McGill added a free throw and Genevieve Frith alertly grabbed the rebound of her own missed foul shot and banked in a shot in the lane to make it 39-29 with 50 seconds left. Nyquist led the Eagles with 15 points, while Bizz Smart poured in 12, all in the first half, taking advantage of some nice feeds from Martinez, Frith and Nyquist.
“We’re playing pretty well right now and we’re pretty happy, he said. “But now, it’s go time.”
At Our Town’s presstime the Eagles were ranked seventh in Class 4A and just one game behind No. 6 Philomath in the Oregon West. The two teams played again Jan. 29 after Our Town’s presstime.
The Stayton girls, meanwhile, are also

athlete Tyrell Williams finished another standout season in the National Football League. The 6-4, 205-pound Williams, who played college ball at Western Oregon, caught 41 passes for 663 yards and five touchdowns during the regular season for the Los Angeles Chargers, who finished 12-4. Williams caught seven more passes for 103 yards in two playoff games, a 23-17 win against the Baltimore Ravens and a 41-28 loss vs. the Super Bowl-bound New England Patriots. Williams will be inducted into the Cascade Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 2. Also being enshrined are Joy Goff and Jon Paul Federico. Cheerleading: Stayton and Cascade will be participating in the OSAA championships Feb. 9 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Stayton got an early-morning draw, with their routine scheduled for 9:10 a.m. Cascade, meanwhile, will perform at 9:50 a.m. Also in the Class 4A field are Cottage Grove, Estacada, Gladstone, Newport, Ontario, Sisters, Siuslaw and Sweet Home. A Grin at the End
Put your life in order
Make a list, cross it off
I like big lists and I cannot lie.
manageable tasks. Other things I have to do later are temporarily shoved aside so I can concentrate on the single job at hand.
Or something like that. With apologies to rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot, I really do like keeping lists, reading lists, and following lists. I’m one of those guys who will sit down with the new telephone book – a really big list – and go through it to see how many names I recognize.
I sometimes wish that other folks would make lists, too. Just think, if members of Congress would make a list of things to do – Item No. 1: Balance the federal budget – maybe they would make some progress.
But I especially use lists. Lists, it turns out, keep me out of trouble. Every night, before I go home from work, I make a list. On it is everything that I have to do the next day. It can be something not very important like “get a haircut.” Or it can be a series of projects I’m working on. Everything goes on the list. The next morning, I review the list and set priorities, starting with those that have to be done first. If it looks like other projects and activities are going to take up the day, that haircut may have to wait. More importantly, I don’t have to worry about forgetting something. All of the important things are on the list, so I can concentrate on what I’m doing and not worry about the other stuff. But the good part is when I finish a project or activity. I
get to cross it off the list. That’s the payoff. Psychologists who analyzed what happens to the human brain when a task is crossed off a list found that you get a small dose of dopamine, a chemical that makes you feel good. I’ll admit it: I’m a dopamine fiend. I used to just wing it. I kept a mental checklist of things that needed to be done and when. The problem with that was the list grew exponentially. I not only would be thinking about what I had to do today, but tomorrow, next week, next year and beyond. I’d get bummed out just thinking about everything I had to do. With a daily list, everything is reduced to individual,
As it stands, they are still arguing about issues they argued about last year, two years ago and a decade ago. As Yogi Berra used to say, “It’s like deja vu all over again.” I’m not exaggerating. I wrote an editorial for a daily newspaper in 1980 poking fun at members of Congress who wanted to balance the budget. Since then, the budget has been balanced two or three years, in the 1990s. This year, the budget was $779 billion in the red with no hope of stanching the red ink in sight. A list may not help in the case of Congress, whose members seem to operate in a parallel universe. But it wouldn’t hurt. Carl Sampson is a freelance writer and editor. He lives in Stayton.

First Impressions Juli Bochsler & The Box prove impressive “Possibly the best looking interior & exterior building in Stayton. Enhancing downtown.” – Anonymous nominator
television/monitor. “That’s really an inspired building and Juli is doing great work,” Allison McKenzie of GROW-EDC wrote.
The Box, a new co-working office space on the top level of the historic Beauchamp building at Third Avenue and High Street in downtown Stayton, made a great first impression on the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce awards committee.
Co-working or shared office space is new to small towns, but is very popular in Portland, Salem and Eugene, Bochsler said. Ronda Lehman of Lucky Dog Design added, “Juli… has done a wonderful job renovating the space.”
“[It’s] possibly the best looking interior and exterior building in Stayton. Enhancing downtown,” one nomination for the 2018 First Impressions Award said. “This was a place intended for people to gather, be creative and enjoy working,” said Juli Bochsler, Stayton resident, general contractor and owner of The Box, LLC. “I love old buildings, but the Beauchamp had a special feel about it the moment I walked in.” “Juli has made a big investment in our downtown area and has faith that things are looking up for Stayton,” Linda Williams wrote, also nominating Bochsler’s efforts for recognition. Having worked out of her home for many years, Bochsler said she needed a space with a professional business address that would allow her to run credit reports, bid on jobs and other business tasks.

“I also wanted a place where I could be around people, have a meeting space other than in a coffee shop, and be able to leave work and go home!” she added. The co-working flexible office space lets people work independently or collaboratively in “a professional atmosphere without breaking the bank.” In addition to an office setting, The Box offers an office kitchen, gathering places for groups including a 12x16foot conference room, and a room with a large
Bochsler will be presented the 2018 First Impressions Award “for her outstanding interior improvements and exterior renovation of the historical Beauchamp building and her ingenious creation of a modern, sophisticated co-working space in the heart of the downtown district” at the chamber’s Reach for the Stars awards luncheon Feb. 28.

Distinguished Service Priscilla Glidewell has found many ways to serve By Teresa Jackson Priscilla Glidewell moved to Stayton 13 years ago for one simple reason. It had the only Budget Blinds franchise in Oregon that was for sale. The reason she wanted to buy a Budget Blinds franchise, however, wasn’t so simple. She had just retired after a decade of directing a large faith-based nonprofit organization in Lane County. “I decided that I wanted to open a foster home,” she said. And she knew because of her background in social work that many foster children had never lived in a home with a working adult. Over the next five years, that was true for 24 of the 27 children she served. “I had a foster home with an intention and a purpose,” she said. Intention and purpose are the common thread in the long list of service work Glidewell has done, and that, in part, is why she will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Stayton

Sublimity Chamber of Commerce at Foothills Church on Feb. 28. In her foster home, she wanted to see better outcomes for the children. When children enter foster care, they are usually one to two years behind in reading, and that gets worse after they enter care. So Glidewell had tutors, and they read every night after dinner. The
children in her home averaged an increase of two grade levels in nine months.
go school and get her degree in social work.
From doing foster care, Glidewell moved on to trying to prevent the need for it. She became the volunteer coordinator for Safe Families for Children, a faith-based program that allows parents to place their children in care voluntarily.
“Five years later, I was the director of one of the largest social service agencies in the state,” she said. “The more that people expected of me, the more I rose to the challenge.”
If, for example, a mom needs to go to drug treatment and has no one to turn to, her only option is for the children to go into state custody. At that point, it becomes difficult to get the children back. Safe Families for Children would care for the children while working with the mom on her recovery, Glidewell said. It’s a story that’s close to home. In the 1970s, Glidewell was a single mom on welfare. “At the age of 35, I lost everything due to drugs and alcohol,” she said. It took drug treatment – she thinks it was her eighth round – before she was able to

“Once I had an extremely personal relationship with Christ, my whole thought processes changed about how I could help people. It was all, I think, to do with soul searching.” Her approach to service has brought accusations of her being too tough . “I’m the social worker that doesn’t believe in free food boxes even,” she said. “I believe that when you give people things over and over again without asking for

But at the age of 45, she had a spiritual experience that she says changed her life forever. At the same time, she was realizing that the social work she was doing wasn’t helping people the way she hoped that it would.

something in return, they begin to believe they have nothing to give.” Mike Jaeger was on the committee that reviewed the Distinguished Service nominations. Jaeger said he admires that about Glidewell. “She’s very supportive of people, but she wants them to help themselves.” Jaeger has known Glidewell through the Rotary Club and Habitat for Humanity. He recalled a time years ago when someone proposed giving students backpacks. He said she liked the idea, but thought the students should do something to earn them “so that they saw that their efforts were rewarded, rather than just giving it to them.” Glidewell brings her philosophy of service into her business. She hires workers with disabilities, and she has been a site for the Department of Human Services’ Welfare to Work program, helping single moms learn office skills.
Tass Morrison, the 2017 Distinguished Service Award recipient, said in making the nomination, “Priscilla has been a driving force behind many significant community initiatives, including [Revitalize Downtown Stayton], North Santiam Integration Team, and Santiam Teen Center. “These initiatives have become resources for businesses, families, and youth,” Morrison continued. “Each is vital to the quality of life here for all citizens. She is indefatigable in her efforts at bringing together groups of people who can make a positive difference in our communities.” Glidewell describes herself as a connector. She often gets things going and then moves on. The North Santiam Integration Team is a good example. “Everyone was working in a silo. Nobody was talking to anyone,” Glidewell said. So she and a social worker started the Canyon Collaborative. Now the program has funding, and people get together monthly to coordinate efforts. She recently finished a term on the
Stayton City Council, and one of her proudest accomplishments was helping to start the Santiam Teen Center by securing rent for “a nominal fee.” The center will open soon, providing snacks, dinner, games, homework help and more to local teenagers. She is also proud of the work she has done for the group working to revitalize downtown Stayton. She has worked as a CASA volunteer, and she served on the school district facilities planning committee, as well as promoting a school bond levy. Glidewell’s service is also personal. Until a recent diagnosis of lung cancer – and a subsequent successful surgery – she made a meal every Wednesday night at New Life Foursquare Church for anyone who wanted to come. That may seem out of character with her philosophy of making people earn what they get, but the dinners are a chance to connect.
“You don’t want to give something away without having relationship,” she said. “Relationship is what changes things.” “It takes a certain kind of leader to persevere when everyone is telling to abandon ship,” said an anonymous nominator wrote about Glidewell. “I think that pretty much sums up Priscilla Glidewell.” While Glidewell travels the world as Budget Blinds’ international spokeswoman, she is glad to come home. “I think of Stayton as the hometown of my heart,” she said. “When I moved to Stayton, I saw true diversity. People looked different, believed different things, and had different religions. And they all worked together.” At 67, Glidewell is not planning on slowing down. “What I want on my epitaph is, ‘A battle hard fought and journey well traveled.’” And so far, the journey has been good.

Since its inception in 1922, NORPAC Foods has been firmly rooted in the Stayton community. Originally Stayton Canning Company, it was created through the cooperation of 40 berry farmers who were looking for a way to process and can their harvest in a cost effective way. Now, more than 97 years later, that cooperation still stands firm with over 200 farms combining to harvest 40,000 acres annually for processing at the NORPAC facility which employs 150 – mostly local – year-round employees with another 450 seasonal employees joining them between July and October. “We get a lot of high school students,” Production Manager Lawrence Silbernagel, said. “We have five local high schools and it’s an opportunity for them to make some extra money.” Silbernagel, who has worked for NORPAC for more than 14 years, also started out working temporarily while

has kept loyal customers coming back for nearly 40 years, is more than the personalized gear. It’s the personalized customer service they provide.
In 1979, with six active kids participating in sports, Nova Ann Gower decided she had had enough of driving from her home in Stayton into Salem to shop for sporting supplies.
“I’ve grown to like my customers and to know them individually – so much so that they have my cell phone number,” employee Anne Devine laughed.
“So she took matters into her own hands,” Nova Ann’s son, Ron Gower, remembered. That spring Nova Ann took out a lease on the old Phillippi Building – currently Ixtapa – and opened her own sporting goods store, which she christened the Stayton Sports Store. “I was still in high school so I worked only part time when needed – same throughout college,” Ron said. But after graduating from Oregon State University in 1986, he quickly became full-time, taking over the Stayton Store and its sister store, Mac Sports, in McMinnville. “The second location was opened to help another rural community closer to the Portland area offer the same goods and apparel as big chain stores,” Ron explained. “We at one point did own Salem Emblem. After growing the store and its name it became too much for our staff. It was sold in 1999 so my mother could retire.”

Although the market has changed over the years, with the advent and subsequent increase in Internet shopping, Stayton Sports Store has continued to thrive. Ron believes this is partly owing to its ability to offer a wide array of products that are also customizable and at a competitive price – something he takes great pride in. “We are able to customize jerseys and fan gear in house,” he explained. “We also do custom artwork for our customers instead of only offering templates like the majority of online stores. We offer letterman’s jackets; not many places do. All chenille patches are made in house and our jackets are made in Portland, Oregon.” But what really sets Stayton Sports Store apart, and what

“Sometimes an amazing business exists in the middle of our community and we forget about it because it’s been there for so long,” a nominator wrote. “Stayton Sports is one of those stores. Stayton Sports provides superior products and services to local businesses, schools, sports teams, civic groups, and more. They give back to the community, often offering discounts for local nonprofit organizations. They do superior work and take responsibility to provide a quality product. “In addition, Ron Gower has generously given of his time to help get the Santiam Youth Sports organization off the ground this year and ensure that we have sports options for our youngest community members, to help them develop a lifetime love of physical activity.” “We like to help our community out,” Ron said.
