Something to Celebrate
Future first citizens By Mary Owen Stayton Rotary Club honored Wyatt Heuberger of Regis High School, and Bradley Phelps of Stayton High School, as the area’s 2017 Future First Citizens. “Stayton Area Rotary is excited and proud for this opportunity to honor Wyatt and Brad as Future First Citizens,” said Karen Andall, Rotary spokesperson. “Rotary values the objectives of service, high ethical standards, personal commitment to serve our community and fellowship. It is clear in knowing the accomplishments and attributes of these young men that they have pursued and demonstrated these values. We congratulate them and wish the best in what are certain for both to be successful and rich futures as they move forward in their lives.” The two were presented with the honors at the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce Community Awards luncheon Feb. 22. Wyatt Heuberger is grateful for receiving this high honor, he said.
Heuberger, Phelps honored by Stayton Rotary
“However, browsing through the prior recipients of this award and looking at their exemplary track records makes me feel unequal to such a recognition,” he said. Heuberger is secretary on the executive branch of student government, a member of the National Honors Society, and a senior leader for the junior encounter.
“Learning comes relatively easy to me. My family and I regularly volunteer at the church serving coffee and donuts after mass, and I try to volunteer when I can at school community events.” Heuberger credits Regis for instilling in him “inveterate Catholic morals and a conscientious code of conduct.
“I played football my first three years of high school, then dropped it this year to simultaneously participate in my first year of cross country and my first fall theater play,” he said. “I made it to state in cross country, and was the first from Regis to do so in seven years, and landed the lead role in the fall play.”
“I feel confident in being able to maintain the set of beliefs and principles that I’ve nurtured within this private high school, but on the same side of the coin I’m worried that I’m unexposed to the diverse world outside of this bubble of secluded culture. In a broad sense, I think I’m well prepared for the future.”
Heuberger also participated in track and field and the spring musical all four years of high school.
Heuberger hopes to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering, possibly at Oregon State University.
“The musicals have been the highlight of my high school experience, because of the unique camaraderie that blossoms between the people in it, and the applicable life skills that acting has taught me,” said the student who gets all A’s.
Heuberger loves the outdoors and participates in a multitude of outdoor activities including recreational skiing and mountain biking, ordinary street biking, nature runs, hiking, disc golf, camping, swimming, and hunting.

Phelps is currently the SHS student body president and a host for all-schoolwide assemblies. Vice president of the National Honors Society, he founded a tutoring club at SHS. “Following my education, I would like to enter the business world, potentially as an entrepreneur, but if not, I would like to work on business strategy and planning, maybe in an operations department of a large firm.” Phelps appreciates all the opportunities the Stayton area has provided. “I am beyond proud to call it my home,” he said. “Thanks to everyone who has helped my throughout my years of involvement in the community.”

Looking Back
A long road By Ruth McWayne Santiam Senior Center’s beginnings date back to Jan. 24, 2006, when a small cadre of community members met at the Stayton Fire Department to brainstorm ideas for a senior center in our area. They worked tirelessly week after week. They came up with the name, Santiam Senior Center, to represent the entire Santiam area, formed the 501c.3 nonprofit, and visited many other senior centers in surrounding communities to borrow ideas. They spent hours writing the bylaws, held open-forum community meetings seeking input, organized fundraisers, and visited many places, seeking a temporary space to open the senior center. Bylaws were completed and adopted by the board on March 30, 2006. Santiam Senior Center was off and running. Those people who worked so hard included Santiam Senior Center’s first Board of Directors: President Greg McWayne, Vice-President Margaret Burns, Secretary Ruth McWayne, Treasurer Mary Herniesen, and members at large, Lee Hazelwood, Pat Clokey and Sandy Johnson. In June, 2006, the entire bank account contained $76. The first Santiam Senior Center location opened on June 29, 2006, in the recreation room of The Church of God of Prophecy located at 10637 Stayton-Marion Road. The center was open Wednesday and Thursday noon –
Senior Center took many people many years to create 4 p.m., and hosted by board members. It was a place to start while a more permanent location was sought. Board members contributed some of their own money to pay the rent. They began signing up the first members, with dues set at $15/year. The Santiam Senior Center had its first entry in Stayton’s Fourth of July Parade in 2006, too. Kent Hazelwood drove his 1929 Model A Ford in the parade with a Santiam Senior Center banner on the front and back. I walked the route, handing out 163 informational flyers about the new senior center. We held our first rummage sale on July 7 and 8 that year and netted nearly $2,000! We were on our way! Unfortunately, the temporary center was not convenient to many members of the community, and wasn’t very successful in that location. By late 2006 the center was only open one afternoon a week. Lack of community involvement ultimately contributed to the temporary center’s closing in early 2007. It proved just a hiccup in the progress, however, because the idea for a senior center had taken root, and there was money in the bank. On Nov. 7, 2007, “reformation” began with another meeting at Stayton Fire District’s building. Greg McWayne, Lee Hazelwood and Sharon Stevenson were appointed board members, and it was decided that funds would remain in the

Board members would begin a new search for a location in town. The senior center was “on hold” for more than a year and a half. But by May 2008 we were publishing and mailing an informative newsletter called “Faded Pages.” Then, in early 2009, reformation continued in earnest. The board held community meetings in an effort to revive the Santiam Senior Center. Maurice’s Bistro at Marion Estates in Sublimity and the community center in Stayton were considered. Board members met at Stayton Public Library and the Covered Bridge Café to continue their work. Santiam Senior Center joined the Stayton-Sublimity Chamber of Commerce, and participated in Summerfest. Greg and I began regularly attending “Greeters” a weekly networking meeting with community business people, to publicize the revival of the senior center. Greg McWayne and Lee Hazelwood were steadfast in their commitment to

find a place where the seniors in our communities could regularly meet and call their own. They began meeting in the fall of 2009 with Don Lawrence, of Santiam Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC) and worked out an agreement in late 2009, which ultimately secured the present site at 41818 Kingston-Jordan Road. Santiam Senior Center owes a great deal of thanks to SCTC, which subsidized the center with funds to remodel the kitchen and purchase and install cabinets, a range and refrigerator. SCTC also helped equip the center with the tables and chairs still enjoyed today. Art, books, DVDs, puzzles, games, and furniture have all been donated over the years by members. Santiam Senior Center held its official opening Jan. 14, 2010 at the present site. Board Members at that time were President Greg McWayne, Vice President Lee Hazelwood, Secretary Margaret Burns, Treasurer Jean Counes, members at large, Leslie Burns and Mel Tufteskog. Board members have come and gone, serving at least a two-year stint in their positions. They, and many other unnamed seniors, have worked very hard to sustain and improve the Santiam Senior Center. It has taken a “village” of dedicated people to make the senior center a success. Long may it thrive.

Helping Hands
Parade plea By Mary Owen The Fourth of July Committee is looking for volunteers. “We really need about eight to 10 volunteers to help with the organizing and execution of the parade, and possibly some help at the high school activities,” said Mike Miller, spokesperson for the committee. “There will be bouncy houses for kids and some vendors selling food.” Miller said the committee can probably pull off the parade with the volunteers already on board, but that “all of the folks that carried the parade are gone and retired out of helping.” The Fourth of July Committee was looking to possibly having Friends of Old Town Stayton take over the parade, but Miller said, “The opposition to moving the parade downtown was so strong. We plan on organizing the parade and fireworks at the same route and venue at Stayton High School.”

“I have been the lead pyrotechnician for the fireworks display for the last 24 years, and feel like it’s one of the best small town shows around,” he said. “I have heard this from spectators for many years.” The Stayton Lions Club is the main sponsor for the annual event, with many other community businesses and organizations donating to the celebration, Miller said. “We are doing well for fundraising so far this year,” he added. “We are still in the process of deciding on a number of fees – parade, vendors.” An informational meeting of the Fourth of July Committee will take place at 1:30 p.m. March 14 at Stayton Middle School. The Brown family sit in front of their piano, which is to return to this exact spot in the historic house.
Funds needed to return, restore Brown House piano Jon Brown, great-great-grandson of Charles and Martha Brown, has offered to return his family’s antique piano to the Brown House Event Center in Stayton. The Santiam Heritage Foundation will be moving it from Jon’s recently sold home in the Lebanon area, have it tuned, and make any required repairs to get it to playing condition. The foundation’s goal is to have ongoing concerts in the event center and having the piano in its original spot in the house (according to the above 1915 photograph) will add historic continuity. The transition has a deadline, however. Having sold his house, Jon needs to have the piano moved within 45 days. Donations can be made online at www.brownhose.org/brown-piano or by

Sorority
Reunion tea party set
By Mary Owen Pinkies up and sip slowly! Beta Sigma Phi members, past and present, will gather for the Yellow Rose Tea, a special reunion event slated for Saturday, April 21, 2 - 4 p.m. at Stayton United Methodist Church, 1450 Fern Ridge Rd. The tea will provide time for members to get reacquainted, share. “All Beta sisters are welcome to attend,” said Mary Lou Hazelwood, spokesperson and BSP Stayton chapter founding member. “We sincerely hope they will come and reconnect with friends.” Currently, the local BSP chapter has 22 active members, Hazelwood said. “Our members are sorority ‘sisters’ and have a very close bond in social activities, enjoyment and service,” she said. “We share good times and difficult times and buoy each other at all times.” Suzanne Garrison comes from Dallas to be a member of the sorority, which she joined in 1975. After spending 15 years in California for work, she moved back to Dallas to be near her grandchildren, and rejoined the Stayton group. “I gladly drive to Stayton for meetings, service projects and other activities,” she said. “I would not do this if it were not for the love and support the entire chapter gives each other. Through the years, the sisters have been there for each other and pitched in and helped whenever needed in the community.”

Beta Sigma Phi is a non-academic sorority with some 200,000 members in chapters around the world. The sorority was founded in 1931 for the social, cultural and civic enrichment of its members. The first Stayton BSP chapter was initiated in 1972 for the Stayton, Sublimity and the Santiam Canyon by several members who had previously been affiliated with other BSP chapters.

Each year the sorority chooses a service theme, and this year’s is “We Put Our Hearts Into It.” Stayton members put their hearts into donating and sorting food for the local food bank, assist with Toys for Joy, and sponsor charities recommended by the organization. “This year we donated items to the Union Gospel Mission and Sedonka House and support to Liberty House,” Hazelwood said. “We also provide monetary donations to Habitat for Humanity and other local charities.” The Yellow Rose Tea Committee members are Joanne Myers, Kathy Miotke, Margo Gilbert-Althaus, Sue Yost, Jan Weakley, Suzanne Garrison and Hazelwood. Finishing Touch Auto Detailing adds Salem location
By Mary Owen
or four more in 2018.
Stayton entrepreneur Ryan Hendricks now operates a second shop – this one in Salem – to serve his customers.
“As always, we try to go above and beyond what other detail businesses consider ‘standard,’” he said. “So far all of our clientele in Salem has been extremely impressed with our quality of work, the performance of our protection products, and the easy access location.”
“A second location has always been part of the plan, I just didn’t know when,” said Hendricks, owner of Finishing Touch Auto Detailing. “Our new location is more convenient for our clients in Salem, has indoor wash bays, and is climatecontrolled so we can provide top-notch quality work all year-round. This new indoor space allows for even more control of the elements, making it perfect for high-end paint corrections and installing Opti-Coat Paint Protection Film.” In the spring of 2017, Hendricks moved from his small shop to a larger shop in Stayton. Once settled, he began looking for shop space in Salem and the Portland Metro area. Just a few weeks after securing a Salem location, he opened the shop. “I spend the first three months working at the Salem location so that things would be set up exactly how I wanted them to be,”
Many of his Salem customers came as referrals from area businesses such as All American Trucking and SUV Accessories, and the local Power Dealership. Ryan Hendricks, owner of Finishing Touch Auto
he said. “Just a few weeks ago, I started working at the Stayton location again and transferred Travis, our lead paint correction detailer, to the Salem shop.” Winter is a slower season for FTA, he said, and usually he downsizes his staff, but having both shops has allowed him to keep all five of his core employees this year. Because of the expansion and continued growth, he plans to hire three

“We’ve had many clients from those areas drive to Stayton for our services so we know there is a demand and we’re determined to fill that need,” he said.
“Freedom has always been very important to me. Having the ability to direct the company any direction I choose is awesome,” Hendricks said. Some wouldn’t consider a 60- to 100hour work week “freedom,” but Hendricks thrives on knowing what he is doing makes a difference in his clients’ and employees’ lives. “And that we’re paving the future for auto detailing,” he said. “I’m so grateful for the immense support from the whole community over the past three years, and am looking forward to continuing to offer the best detailing services available.” Hendricks has reformulated the shop’s menu to offer more economical options, including custom interior detailing from $50 to $200 and ceramic coatings starting at $350. The Salem location is at 3131 Portland Road NE. The Stayton location is at 101 N Second Ave.

“Salem has been very welcoming, and clients are happy to have a high-end detail shop in Salem finally,” said Hendricks, who was named 2016 Young Professional of the Year by the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce. Hendricks plans to expand into the Portland area, Eugene area and Central Oregon in the next two to three years.
Running his own business, he said, “just feels right.”

Teammates Sanchez, Christman battle in final
The Cascade High wrestling team took fourth in the Class 4A state wrestling tournament, which ran Feb. 16-17 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The Cougars produced an all-Cascade 220-pound final as top-seeded Louie Sanchez wound up facing unseeded junior teammate Macoy Christman for the title. Sanchez concluded an unbeaten season with a 5-1 victory, but Christman’s efforts gave the Cougars’ team standing a huge boost. Also winning a title was top-seeded sophomore 126-pounder Kane Nixon, who pinned second-seeded Zachary Mauras of Crook County at 5:27 in the final.

Noah Thompson, meanwhile, took third at 132 pounds for Cascade by pinning Coltyn Ringen of North Bend.

OSAA reclassification: Cascade’s appeal of its move by the Oregon School Activities Association to Class 5A was heard Feb. 14 by hearings officer Michael Gillette. Useless knowledge comes in handy sometimes
“I know that!”

“Well, uh, I think it was a good one,” I told my teammates. My wife and I had just watched that movie about a month ago. The poker scene must have taken place while I was checking out the refrigerator.
“I must’ve been mistaken.”
Anyway, I took a wild guess and was wrong, and missed another chance at trivia stardom.

When I was the only guy at the table who knew the kind of speaker ‘60s rock bands like Vanilla Fudge used with their Hammond B-3 organs – a Leslie – then I was hooked. The table looked at me like I was a hero for knowing something any high school kid in the ‘60s would have known.
found six-plus decades worth of accumulated useless knowledge so useful. I do trivia quizzes online a couple times a day, and for kicks one of our sons, my wife and I occasionally go to the “big leagues” of trivia at Salem Ale Works. This isn’t a plug;Treatment it’s just the only contest Illness I oftrivia Chronic know about and have checked out. That’s the attraction of the game. Care • Sports Medicine Usually, I find that I’m better at the eating and drinking But there are times when my memory fails me. In fact, there was a whole category of questions about poker that I missed. As it turns out, you could put everything I know about poker and wouldn’t even have the trivia equivalent of a pair of deuces. But that’s the charm of the game. Another question was to name 10 of the 15 largest cities in the U.S. whose names don’t have an “A” in them. Our team did great in that category. The surprises were Columbus, Ohio; Fresno and Riverside, California; and Tucson, Arizona. But it’s all for fun, and a good excuse to get out of the house on a weeknight. In the meantime, I’ll keep “studying” by doing what I always do – sitting around reading and stuffing meaningless factoids into my cranium. And getting ready for the next battle. Carl Sampson is a writer, editor, author and not much use in a game of trivia.
