Time lost counts By Steve Ritchie Former principal Sean Aker has a simple message to convey in his new job: Every Day Matters. It sounds like it could be a catchy slogan to sell Gatorade or Nike workout gear, but it’s a far more important message directed to students and their parents. Aker works at the Willamette Educational Service District as a Regional Coordinator for Reducing Chronic Absenteeism. His mission is to increase awareness of the importance of regular, consistent school attendance and help schools develop strategies to combat chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is defined by the State of Oregon as missing 10 percent or more of school days. That amounts to 18 days during the school year, or two days a month. It may not sound like a lot, but Aker noted that a student missing 10 percent of school days from kindergarten through eighth grade will have missed the equivalent of a full year of school time before entering high school. “If the student misses time in the classroom that’s a day they can never get back,” Aker said. “If you are missing two days or more in the first month of the school year, that is probably going to be the pattern for the year. And if you have chronic absenteeism in elementary school, that is likely going to be the pattern throughout your school years.”

Schools get help tackling student chronic absenteeism In 2016 House Bill 4022 became law in an effort to address the problem statewide. Initially, about $6.7 million was allocated by the state for the 2017-2019 budget cycle. A slice of those funds went to the 30 schools with the highest rate of absenteeism. Another slice went to assist the next 60 schools through support services through the regional Economic Service Districts. According to Department of Education statistics, chronic absenteeism is higher in kindergarten and first grade, but drops in grades two to six. It starts to rise again in middle school and continues at problematic levels in high school. The average student missed 12.5 days in the last school year, but those who are chronically absent often miss far more. Aker is excited about the early success several schools have had. While schools chart their own path in improving attendance, the approach utilizes the same framework. Building awareness of the impact of being absent is the first step. Studies show that it takes three days for students to “catch up” from one day of absence. Parents and students often don’t realize how quickly they can fall behind from a short illness, a family vacation, or appointments. A second component is building capacity in the school to address attendance issues, whether that is dealing with students who need assistance, eliminating bullying or simply creating a more welcoming school environment.

The third key component is intervention. The North Santiam School District’s “Pledge to Attend” program focused on securing commitments from students whose attendance was less than stellar. Aker said the approach had some surprising results. “Show up for school for 20 (straight) days and win great prizes and enjoy a pizza party was our pitch,” Aker said. Sixty-seven students participated over three phases of 20 days. Parents were informed and students were rewarded. By the end of the year, two-thirds were regular attendees. North Santiam School District Superintendent Andy Gardner praised the Pledge to Attend initiative and believes the effort to improve attendance is money well spent. “We always work on our attendance data and our rate (of attendance) is always in the 90 percentile, so there’s a lot of comfort there, but when we began to look at the number of kids who missed two days or more a month it really allowed us to focus on individual students,” Gardner said. “The Pledge to Attend program paid great dividends. For those kids to know that people are rooting for them to just be there is very powerful. Those kids were able to improve their rate of attendance and it gave them a feeling of accomplishment... The challenge now is to take Sean’s methods into our everyday working culture so it just becomes what we do moving forward.”

The Teddy Roosevelt Oregon Roadshow takes place from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Brown House, sponsored by the Santiam Historical Foundation. Wiegand is considered “the world premiere Theodore Roosevelt reprisor, with his unparalleled grasp of history and uncanny resemblance to the famed Rough Rider,” according to organizers. “His depth of knowledge about the personal anecdotes in Roosevelt’s life makes his audiences feel they are truly in the presence of the former U.S. president and adventurer.” For seven years, the Oregon Historical Society and Wells Fargo have sponsored this educational opportunity, offering

schools and historical societies a chance to host “Teddy” for a special performance. Through this program, Wiegand has entertained and educated Oregonians of all ages as he traversed thousands of miles throughout the state, according to OHS. “I have personally seen ‘Teddy’ perform more than 75 times, yet each time I am blown away by his energy and how he truly embodies our 26th president,” said Kerry Tymchuk, OHS executive director. “OHS is thrilled to again partner with Wells Fargo to bring this educational experience to schools and historical organizations throughout the region.” Foundation vice-president Steve Poisson said as the Brown House moves toward completing renovations, the focus will be on historic document preservation and community education. “We will look to take advantage of presentations available like this one, and will also be presenting archival materials

Mayor Hank Porter has invited potential candidates to attend the Stayton City Council meeting tin October.

Porter called the selection process “slow,” adding that applications have been received from “some really competent people.”

“We want to let them see us in action,” Porter said. “Maybe somebody will get cold feet when they see how we operate.” Porter received about a half dozen letters of interest to take over former Councilor Brian Quigley’s seat, vacated by his recent resignation. Quigley was honored by the city on Sept. 19 for his 8.5 years of service to the Stayton community. Prior to his time on the city council, he served on the planning commission, parks and recreation board of directors, and the

Richard DeVilliers passed away on Sept. 10, 2019. He was a very kind, outgoing and supportive of his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, motorcycles and hotrods, and most of all having a good time with family and friends. He served in the United States Marine Corps and did a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1966-1967. Fundraising for MobilePack continues By Mary Owen Feed My Starving Children will get a helping hand to turn hunger into hope from local volunteers in October. “It has been exciting to watch the community respond this year,” said Kelly Fields, Stayton High School Business teachers and the local volunteer event coordinator. “I think that they are really starting to understand the heart of the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack! They are eager to help.” Volunteers are needed to help pack meals of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and nutritionally balanced vitamins and minerals, Fields said. “FMSC provides the supplies and the community provides the funds and manpower to pack the meals, and during the set up and the clean up. There are also packing spots available during the 2 p.m. shift. “Fundraising is going well... We are shy of our goal by just $5,429,” she added. “I have every confidence that the folks from the Santiam Canyon Community will provide those funds.”

Stayton boys soccer hopes to build on Woodburn win

In sports sometimes it’s what you do next that matters... not what you did today. On Sept. 19, the Stayton High boys soccer team blanked Woodburn 2-0 to move to 4-0 in the Oregon West Conference. Stayton went to 5-0 Monday with a 10-0 win against Sisters. Philomath and Woodburn are second and third, respectively, with one loss apiece. But the Eagles have been here before. And it didn’t work out. Stayton knotted up the Oregon West standings a year ago with a 1-0 home win vs. Woodburn. But the Eagles lost a shot at a co-championship with a 1-0 loss to Cascade. And then Stayton went out quietly in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs with a 1-0 home loss to Seaside. Woodburn, meanwhile, playing in its first season at Class 4A, won its sixth state title in the past nine years with a 2-0 win vs. North Marion. Stayton has one state title and two runner-up finishes in that same time frame. So as satisfying as Stayton’s win vs. Woodburn was, Coach Chris Shields urged his players afterward not to get complacent.

“Our team is continuing to improve each week and have competed well.” Stayton coach Randy Nyquist said. “We have a good blend of upperclassmen and younger players who are contributing at the varsity level.”

The score went to 2-0 in the 66th on a brilliant piece of work by sophomore Jayden Esparza, who picked a Bulldogs player clean in his own half, beat another and fired a shot to the far post for the two-goal lead.

Stayton is ranked fifth in Class 4A, but it’s a long season. There are seven league games left, including two against Cascade and an Oct. 17 rematch at Woodburn. The Stayton girls, defending champs in the Oregon West, are 2-1-1 in league and in a tight race with 3-0-1 Philomath and 3-0 Woodburn. Football: Stayton and Cascade took 2-1 records into their Friday rivalry matchup at Stayton which kicked off the Oregon West Conference season and occurred after Our Town’s presstime. Cascade is ranked ninth in Class 4A, with the Eagles 23rd.

Hole-in-one fundraiser: Boosters clubs at Stayton and Regis teamed up on a unique fundraiser for scholarships and the school’s track and field programs. Participants took on the challenge of trying to nail a hole-in-one on the 85-yard island hole on the property of retired contractor Dennis Holm and raised $14,000, $6K for scholarships and $4K apiece for the two school’s track and field budgets. More than 70 people participated, taking three shots at an ace, which would have netted one male golfer and one female golfer $10,000. No one was able to conquer the hole, although Drew Dickey was the closest male participant at 2 feet, 7 inches. Jody Classen was the top woman at ten feet from the hole. Troy Irving and Randy Wolf tied for second among men at 2-10, with Terry Holm (11-5) and Sandra Owens (11-1) taking second and third among female participants. The top three took home some loot, with first place at $2,000, second at $1,000 and third at $600. Alumni watch: Former Cascade athlete Tyrell Williams of the Oakland Raiders has caught 14 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the first three games. A Grin at the End

Small towns ...

Big hearts

I love small towns. I’ve lived in several – in Oregon, Minnesota and Alaska. Unless I was forced to, I’d never live in a big city.

expertise. My wife and I, and our son, needed both. After the infection had subsided and our son was feeling better, my wife and I arrived at the hospital to take him home to continue his recovery. As we reached the door, a young husband and wife were taking their new baby to their car for the first trip home, excited and thankful and full of anticipation. The mom was an acquaintance and the daughter of friends.

But I’ve been at a loss to explain to other people just why I like small towns. It’s not just the Fourth of July fireworks or the street festivals. There’s more to it. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Then something happened a few weeks ago that brought my thoughts into clearer focus. Our youngest son, 22, got sick – really sick. What started out as burn on his elbow turned into a massive infection. By the time he got to the emergency room at Santiam Hospital, he couldn’t walk, his heart rate was spiking and his blood pressure was plummeting.

Then it occurred to me. In a small town, you really do get to witness the circle of life, the ebb and flow of friends, neighbors and strangers you encounter. Sometimes it’s under the worst of circumstances; other times, it’s the best of circumstances.

whom knew us – and others who went out of their way to introduce themselves. For example, two of the CNAs went to high school with our son. One even had gone to the prom with him. The other brought him flowers and a “get well” card on her day off. The ICU supervisor was a neighbor. She took the time to, well, just talk, sharing stories about her family and asking after mine. In the hospital lunchroom, the nurses and others asked about our son.

In a small town, you have to buy into the concept of neighbor much more readily than in a big city. Unlike life in a big city, you can’t divorce yourself and your fate from the town’s, because every one of us is important. Every town is a tapestry of the people who live in it. That’s true whether you live in Silverton, Mount Angel, Stayton or Sublimity.

But that’s not my point.

Another former neighbor who worked at the hospital greeted me in the hallway, asking how I was doing.

We, the people, make a town. We give it that sweet, loving and sharing character.

My point is that, at every turn, my wife and I found ourselves surrounded by friends and neighbors, many of
