Subway has new home handicaps and seniors don’t have to get out of their car. We want to make it easy for our customers.” Chipman expected customers to be lined up to be the first to use the drive-thru window or enter the new store on its soft opening day. As of Jan. 28, the Stayton eatery joined the wave of restaurants that have added drive-up services to their facilities, and it also sports a new location and updated look. Continued on page 2

Work matters Summit Cleaning & Restoration 2014 Large Business of Year By Mary Owen Brian and Angie Harper run their business with one goal in mind: to be a successful business that helps serve their communities in time of need and distress with compassion and integrity. “This is really the hallmark of Brian and Angie,” said Chris Nordyke, vice-president of marketing for Summit Cleaning & Restoration, earning the company top honors as the Stayto Sublimity Chamber of Commerce’s Large Business of the Year for 2014 (15-plus employees). “Brian has said a number of times that his goal was never to be a large company, the biggest restoration contractor,” Nordyke added. “His goal was to create a different experience for customers, centering on how to best serve them. Over time, the company grew and grew and grew as people affirmed that.”
company, very professional,” “kind, knowledgeable, professional staff” and “we are very satisfied” are just a few. The Harpers toss about “work” and “philanthropy” as one in the same. “One provides resources for the other, but our connection with the community begins with our work restoring family’s homes and businesses,” Harper said of the company that opened its doors at the corner of First and Ida in Stayton in 2005 with just three employees. Today, Summit has 50-plus employees that Harper said are still holding on to its original small business culture, something he never hopes to lose as the company continues to expand. While Stayton remains “home,” Summit now serves people throughout much of Oregon.
“We see our client’s crisis as a window through which we can reach our culture,” Harper said. “We listen with our hearts and touch with our hands because that’s who we are.”
“We serve the community cleaning homes, businesses, windows and carpets on a regularly scheduled basis,” Harper said. “Our work is extremely personal and we really focus on understanding the stated and unstated needs and desires of our customers. It is truly a blessing to have the opportunity to serve people this way. This is what drives our whole team!”
Testimonials abound on the company’s website: “great

Large Business of the Year award. “My wife and I see how much of an impact our team has throughout the year,” Harper said. “For people outside the company to recognize our team’s contributions is really a blessing because it helps validate to my team how much their work matters.” The Harpers, married in 1996, have two children. Their family loves to spend time boating, traveling, SCUBA diving, and “hanging out together.” Brian loves to fly fish and hunt for upland game birds. Angie enjoys reading, cooking and photography. In addition to caring for their customers, Brian and Angie are active in Foothills Church. They frequently serve on mission trips and generously support many local charities, including sponsoring the annual Santiam Canyon Father-Daughter Ball, working on Habitat for Humanity builds, hosting a blood drive, and sponsoring community projects such as the Frisbee golf course. “Another way we serve is by supporting the Crisis Chaplaincy and Todd Pynch, who offers an incredibly important service to families throughout the entire Willamette Valley,” Harper said. “Summit will continue to look for opportunities to help strengthen our communities.”

A privilege to serve Publisher Paula Mabry calls Our Town “a small business with a big mission.” “Our Town is about giving people a sense of community,” Mabry said. “We share their stories and provide context for their lives. “The day-to-day is important,” she added. “Who’s doing business, who’s volunteering, who’s stepping up to lead, what’s making a difference, that’s the basis of Our Town, and the backbone of our communities.” For its coverage and outreach to the community, Our Town was recognized as Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce 2014 Small Business of the Year. Nominated by Allison McKenzie, executive director of GROW Santiam, Our Town has been promoting news for the greater Stayton area for more than a decade. The monthly publication describes itself as “Our Town – It’s the place where we play, work, dream; the place where we raise our children and carve out our lives.” “They work so hard to produce a paper that really tells the stories of our hometowns, and do an especially good job for our local businesses,” McKenzie said. McKenzie said Our Town “routinely demonstrates its support for our local communities with clear articles and a generous number of column inches. Our Town makes a

habit of interviewing local business people, spotlighting local businesses and the good works of our nonprofit organizations, and generously tells the stories that make us all proud to be a part of these communities.” “Our Town says ‘yes’ whenever they are asked to offer free publicity for local events,” she said. “Do you notice how often their name appears on the list of treasured sponsors for events in our local communities?” McKenzie credited Our Town staff members for their generous use of time and energy, and “unique blend of journalistic professionalism and hometown spin,” making the monthly publication a “most valued small business in Stayton-Sublimity.” Our Town, founded in 2004, is distribured at business locations and by US mail. By the first of each month it goes to every home, business and post office box in Stayton, Sublimity, Aumsville, Lyons and Mehama. It also is mailed to Mill City, Gates, Idanha and Detroit quarterly.

“It’s a privilege to do work we choose in communities we care about,” Mabry said. “We’re honored to be recognized by the chamber.. Heart-felt thanks go to our readers, advertisers, contributors and co-workers for being part of Our Town.”
