rogressive growth blended with small town values makes Grants Pass business-friendly.

“And companies are updating and refreshing their locations, which adds a stronger visual community image,” says Colene Martin, executive director of the Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce. The city downtown area continues to grow, an attractive and contagious asset to the city’s livability. “Downtowns are the heart of a community,” Martin says. “A healthy, vibrant downtown is essential to sustainability and growth. In addition to products and services, it offers communities a place to gather, take walks, or celebrate events together.”

AMENITIES & EXPERIENCES According to Martin, visitors look to escape everyday life when on vacation. They seek amenities and experiences that are “fun, interesting, and distinctive.” Those qualities appeal when incorporated into regular day-to-day activities, too. Many new businesses that have sprouted throughout the community reflect that. Within the past few years, Twisted Cork, Babe’s Bakery, Roux 26, Oregon Pour Authority, and The Cigar Cave have opened their doors. Isaiah Ellis, who owns Babe’s Bakery with his wife, Candice, cited a “sense of community” as a major draw to locating in Grants Pass. “Our clientele is about 85 percent regulars who we know on a first-name basis,” Ellis says. “We’re supported by such a great group of people. We just had a baby, and about a dozen people brought us presents!”

Grants Pass local Beth Forshay, part owner of the premier wine bar Twisted Cork, calls Grants Pass “a great town!” “We employ a number of employees and generate revenue for the town in general as well as support local vendors and wineries,” Forshay says. “We look forward to growing and getting better.” “Local craft beer is a fast-growing industry,” Martin notes. “Wild River has been a longtime Chamber of Commerce member and has been brewing craft beers longer than anyone in the area. With Pour Authority, Grants Pass has (added) three new places for craft beer.”

NEW & RENEWED A new industry for Grant Pass is call centers. With the addition of First Call Resolution and Answer Live, employing more than 400 people in the area, Martin believes the contribution to area vitality is significant. Another addition to the business community roster is Asante Clinic for Outpatient Health, the new neighbor of Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, she says. Martin notes that some area companies have remodeled or moved, including: the historic Weasku Inn, originally built as a fishing lodge on the banks of the Rogue River; the Redwood Motel, with its new conference room and landscaping; Schmidt Winery in the Applegate area, offering a new outdoor area for special events; Bridgeview Winery in the Illinois Valley, one of Josephine County’s oldest wineries; and AAA, which moved to a new, trendy building in Parkway Village.

PROFIT & PROMISE Businesses that survive economic challenges are forging ahead into a profitable future by changing their products and service models and adopting new marketing strategies such as use of phone applications and social-media presence, Martin adds. The future she’s working toward for Grants Pass includes “a good balance of trade sector or manufacturing jobs that will provide more customers to the existing businesses, in addition to creating new shopping experiences for our area.

nesses,” Martin explains. “When you have more demand than you can supply, you will then see growth in your business community.”

“Companies that successfully reinvent themselves tend to broaden their focus beyond the financial curves and manage to track the basis of competition in their industry, renewing their capabilities, and developing a supply of talent,” Martin says.

An artful bearing By Mary Owen

hen visiting Grants Pass, don’t be surprised by the number of bears around town.

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, Evergreen Federal Bank brought 80 bears — including 20 new Southern Oregon bears — to populate the streets of Grants Pass from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “We want to thank our community,” explains Jeff Hyde, Evergreen president. “We hope BearFest is something our community will enjoy and be able to share with visitors, family, and friends.” Originating in 2003 and repeated in 2004, 2005 and 2010, the popular event showcases decorated, embellished, bejeweled, and painted larger-than-life-size bears that prove art doesn’t have to be “serious” to be great. Artists have created more than 145 bears, with more than half auctioned to raise more than $250,000 for local nonprofits.

“As a community bank, we look for ways to reinvest in local projects that make a difference where we live,” Hyde says. When not on outdoor display, the bears hibernate at the Bear Hotel, which also serves as an artist workshop and community asset. The bears, the Magical Musical Christmas Murals fiberoptic light panels, and other public art projects sponsored by Evergreen Federal Bank annually draw in more than 30,000 people for art tours or to use the meeting facilities. “We want our events to be creative and enjoyable for those who live here,” says Hyde, a Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce board member. “BearFest does this by providing public art that showcases what makes our community special.” Evergreen Federal Bank also sponsors the bronze wildlife sculptures, created by artists Peter and Lindi Sedlow, that adorn the Wildlife Sculpture Garden at Evergreen Park as well as hand-painted murals,

complete with hidden creatures, created by artist Bob Eding. Grants Pass is home to a growing community of crafts persons, artists, and entrepreneurs, from one-person operations and art galleries to national and international companies. This creates an outpouring of events that help brand Grants Pass and Josephine County as an arts community, says Jeff Jones, coordinator of Art Along the Rogue. “We’ve always had a lot of artists in the county,” he says. The popular sidewalk art show that takes place on the first weekend in October and attracts over 10,000 visitors annually “lets them showcase their talents.” Lee Wassnick, owner/glassblower at The Glass Forge Gallery & Studio, started The Glass Forge in 1998. He views his and other art outlets as ways to keep the community — and the county — healthy. “When art thrives in a community, the community thrives,” says Wassnick.

Art Along The Rogue First held in 2003, Art Along the Rogue has become the premier street painting and music festival in the Northwest. “Traditionally, street painting was done to replicate the murals of cathedrals,” said explains coordinator Jeff Jones of the 16th century art form called Maddoni. “What we do with our event is choose a theme that lets artists create a masterpiece with a great design and subject matter. This year’s theme will be ‘Covers.’ Artists of all ages, including high school groups, will try to recreate album covers.” Music on the grand stage will also focus on renditions from some of the greats, including The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. “We’re combining art and music like never before,” Jones says. According to Jones, from the first swish of chalk to the last note of music — and even to the doggy “art” of costumed and paraded canines — Art Along the Rogue helps brand Grants Pass as “a hidden arts community that’s now not so hidden.” “The dynamic starts on Saturday morning with nothing on the street, but as the art develops, people go into shops and come back,” Jones explains. “It’s a really nice family event that keeps people engaged.” Art Along the Rogue is a free, sponsor-supported event held the first weekend in October, the month organizers call “the most beautiful time of year to visit Grants Pass and chalk!” For more information, call Grants Pass Tourism at (800) 547-5927 or visit www.artalongtherogue.com.

Chateau at the Caves

he majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the rustic period of Great Lodge construction come together at the Chateau at the Oregon Caves National Monument. Built in 1934, the Chateau is a 23-room rustic hotel located adjacent to the entrance to The Oregon Caves, the only active limestone formation in Oregon. The Monument celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2009.

The Chateau retains its original charm and houses a historic collection of Monterey furniture. From May through October, visitors can enjoy breathtaking geological wonders, take family-focused opportunities to explore marble caves, hike through ancient

forests, stay overnight, and experience casual dining or gourmet meals. The Chateau is managed by The Oregon Cave Outfitters, 1 (877) 245-9022. The Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau was formed in 2008 in cooperation with the National Park Service to preserve, protect, and improve the cultural and natural resources of The Monument. The Friends can be reached at (541) 944-1139. The Monument Visitor Center is open according to the The Caves tour calendar. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the fall. There is no fee to visit the monument.

Cave tours are available on a first-come basis. Tours are moderately strenuous, offered May–October. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to participate. On summer weekends, the last tour of the day is conducted by candlelight, giving participants an experience similar to that of the first explorers. Tickets are $8.50 for adults aged 17 and older, $6 for age 16 and younger. Group rates are available: (541) 592-2100, ext. 2261.

Cycling & Hiking Bear Camp Trail This short trail runs along Bear Camp Ridge and offers spectacular views, wildflowers, and summer hiking. Parking, picnic tables, and restrooms at Bear Camp Overlook.

Briggs Creek Trail

Trail features meadows and swimming holes in Briggs Creek; you must ford the creek several times, and smaller creeks, springs, and some marshy areas must be crossed. The trail travels through old harvest units and old growth stands. The west end offers a view. A swimming hole is at the lower end. Burnt Timber Interpretive Trail This interpretive loop features signs about ecology and forest management. A short spur trail connects to the Taylor Creek Trail. It’s a good family hike with a short loop and mild slopes; expect spectacular color in fall.

Beginning at about the three-mile marker on Forest Service Road 2500, this “backbone” trail connects with Briggs Valley recreation sites. Seven trailheads access this trail, including Burned Timber Interpretive Trail, Minnow Creek Trail, China Creek Trail, Big Pine Spur Trail, Briggs Creek Trail, Dutchy Creek Trail, and Onion Way. A Tree-mendous Experience

here are many educational and adventurous sites in Southern Oregon, but there’s one where you can lit-treely “go out on a limb.” The Out ‘n’ About Treesort and Institute features treehouse accommodations for all ages. There are a total of 18 different treehouses, platforms, and forts, plus seven swinging bridges, five swings, 20 flights of stairs, four ladders and a ropes course with a 160' long zip line as a warm-up to the Giant Zip. On the ground, there is also a fresh water swimming pool fed by the East Fork Illinois River, a performance stage, bath house pavilion, big campfire site, and barbecues. The tree-sort’s 36 private acres back up to National Forest wilderness.

It’s a home-grown and -based business offering guided horseback rides, tree cimbs, ziplines, and a giant swing. There are also rafting trips, hikes, and custom adventures. stablished out of the western portion of Jackson County by the Territorial Legislature in 1856, Josephine County, Oregon’s 19th county, was named for Virginia “Josephine” Rollins, the first white woman to make Southern Oregon her home, according to the county’s website: www.co.josephine.or.us.

The county seat was originally located in Sailor Diggings (later Waldo), but in July 1857 it was relocated to Kerbyville, situated on the main route between the port of Crescent City in California and the Oregon gold fields. Mining gave way to other pursuits, and in 1886 the county seat was relocated to Grants Pass, a new town on the railroad that was completed through Oregon that same year. The town was named in honor of President Ulysses DOUGLAS COUNTY Grant. The current Josephine County Courthouse at 500 Wolf Creek NW 6th St. was constructed in 1917 to replace the CURRY courthouse built in 1887. The county celebrated JOSEPHINE COUNTY COUNTY its 150th anniversary in 2006. Josephine County is predominantly mountainous, but has two major valleys cut by the Rogue and Illinois rivers. The Josephine County Historical Society is housed in the Schmidt House on the corner of 5th & J Streets in Grants Pass. Col. LeRoy Heston's endowment and that of Anna and Flora Schmidt provide in part for maintaining the Schmidt House and Research Library. The library is open Tuesday – Friday, 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to drop by and learn more about local families, the land, and the community.
