Eclipse 2017

Don’t be caught in the dark without a plan! The North Santiam River region will be among the best spots in the nation to view the total eclipse of the sun on Aug. 21, 2017. The first total solar eclipse touching the continental United States since 1979 will touch down on the Oregon Coast between Lincoln City and Newport, with a trajectory that will run from the Pacific to Atlantic oceans. The eclipse will reach Oregon at about 10:15 a.m. PDT and exits the state at 10:27 a.m., according to greatamericaneclipse.com. The “path of totality” will put many area cities, from Aumsville to Idanha,

The innermost part of the shadow (the umbra) will strike through the North Santiam Canyon, as represented in the line on the opposite map. The recent Rural Tourism Initiative Group from our region is planning an inaugural River Festival in conjunction with the 2017 Eclipse as a means to engage visitors in hopes to create additional revenue and encourage return tourism to our area.

Abridged from NASA and American Astronomical Society

Looking directly at the Sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”), when the Moon entirely blocks the Sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality.

Brownsville

If you are within the path of totality, remove your solar filter only when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright Sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to glance at the remaining partial phases.

Sweet Home

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun. To date three manufacturers have certified that their eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, and Thousand Oaks Optical.

Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter. Always supervise children using solar filters. Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device.

You can also use a telescope or binoculars to project images of the partially eclipsed Sun onto a surface for convenient viewing. This is called optical projection, because it involves optics (that is, lenses and/ or mirrors). Compared with pinhole projection, optical projection generally provides bigger, brighter, sharper images. But because passing bright sunlight through binoculars or a telescope can damage the device, and because of the danger that someone might look at the Sun through the device and injure their eyes, you should not attempt optical projection unless you are an experienced astronomical observer, are using your own equipment, and can remain with your equipment at all times to supervise its use.

Information about safe solar viewing and instructions for pinhole and optical projection can be found at: • How to View the 2017 Solar Eclipse Safely (NASA): eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety • How to Look at the Sun (Sky & Telescope): www.skyandtelescope.com/ astronomy-news/observing-news/ how-to-look-at-the-sun • How to View the Sun Safely (Front Page Science): www.fpsci.com/ how_to_view.html • How to Make a Pinhole Camera (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory): www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/ how-to-make-a-pinhole-camera/ • How to View a Solar Eclipse (Exploratorium): www.exploratorium.edu/ eclipse/how-to-view-eclipse

Play + Relax

The North Santiam Canyon is home to some of the best water recreation in Oregon, with the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake offering opportunities for kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming. A 92-mile tributary of the Santiam River, the North Santiam originates in the Cascades near Mount Jefferson. During spring snowmelt it offers many Class III and Class IV rapids, including Spencer’s Hole, Carnivore and Mill City Falls. During the summer the North Santiam moves at a more relaxing pace with Class II rapids. Detroit Lake is a multi-purpose water project, created by the Army Corps of Engineers upon completion of the 463-foot Detroit Dam in 1953. Powered by two generator units, the dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation, and a recreational lake. Detroit Lake is nine miles long, holds 455,100 acre-feet of water and has 33 miles of shoreline. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the waters annually with 125,000 rainbow 8 | North Santiam Canyon Guide & Business Directory 2017

trout along with fingerling rainbow trout, kokanee and Chinook salmon. There are also brown bullhead, largemouth bass and pumpkinseed in the reservoir. The main game of the North Santiam River, Steelhead and Chinook Salmon, make their way to the area in May and remain until August. Substantial runs of these fish continue to be abundant in the North Santiam below Detroit. The downstream point of the fish runs is located at Packsaddle Park about 60 miles upstream from the Willamette. The North Santiam is a popular spot for kayaking and float trips, with access to the river provided at many of the communities and at parks from Lyons and Mehama to Big Cliff Dam.

Breitenbush Hot Springs Bruckman purchased the land in 1927 and converted it into a health spa, which he operated for more than 20 years. Alex Beamer bought the then-dilapidated facilities in 1977 and converted the area into the modern Breitenbush Hot Springs Resort & Conference Center. In addition to its renowned hot springs, the center offers healing arts and massage, daily wellbeing programs, performances, hiking trails, and workshops. Breitenbush hosts more than 150 events each year. Visit www.breitenbush.com or call 503-854-3320 for information.

Elkhorn Golf Course An exceptionally scenic course, Elkhorn offers a challenging 18 holes of golf, even for the low handicapper. Elkhorn is an 18 hole regulation length course, 71 par, 6242 yards. There are chipping and putting practice areas for golfers interested in working on their short game. The course is located at 32295 North Fork Road SE, Lyons.

Explore

The North Santiam Canyon is a mecca for hikers. There are trails seemingly everywhere you look. Riverside meanderings. Hill climbs that will test your stamina. Amazing meetings of water and rock and old-growth trees, with moss everywhere, water gurgling on all sides. The wilderness area is more than just a place to mosey among the trees. It is a symbol of the fight that took place in the 1980s over Forest Service logging. It helped turn a small nocturnal bird into a bumper sticker and changed the way Oregon does business. Interestingly, the region’s first industry was hard-rock extraction, with the buildings of Jawbone Flats, the old mining town at the center of the wilderness, still standing, incongruously, amid a cathedral of old-growth trees.

Jim Kinghorn

Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center maintains and stewards Jawbone Flats, a rejuvenated historic 1930 mining town in the heart of the 35,000-acre ancient forest watershed of the Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Recreation Area.

Camping & Hiking For information regarding camp sites, trails, boating, and more – consult the map on pages 26 – 27. The Opal Creek Forest was first inhabited by Native Americans. Miners arrived in the valley and discovered gold in 1859. The Jawbone Flats mining camp began in 1930. Some roads and the Gold Creek Bridge were constructed in 1939 under President Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Friends of Opal Creek was established in 1989 to secure permanent protection of the Opal Creek ecosystem. In 1992, mining ceased and the Shiny Rock Mining Co. gave Friends of Opal Creek a land gift valued at $12.6 million.

Included were 151 acres of land: Jawbone Flats and a stand of old-growth forest. In October 1996 federal legislation established the 20,827 acre Opal Creek Wilderness, the 13,538 acre Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area and a 3,066 acre Wild and Scenic River designation for Elkhorn Creek. The Opal Creek forest receives approximately 20,000 visitors annually.

The best way to learn about the area’s rich and interesting history is by visiting the Canyon Life Museum. Exhibits vividly demonstrate the development of the canyon, including the fascinating life of early settlers. Read the diary of the young wife of a logger and examine the grainy sepia photographs of miners. Displays also include a three-dimensional topographic map of the canyon. The museum, located at 129 Wall St. in Mill City, occupies two buildings: the old Southern Pacific train depot and the historic Santiam Lumbering Company building, the oldest commercial building remaining in Mill City. Both museum buildings were restored by the North Santiam Historical Society thanks in part to a $40,000 grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust. The old lumbering company building serves as the historical society headquarters.

in July 2016 alone!” Harrington said.

Committe Chair Lynda Harrington said the committe is well on its way to saving the historic bridge.

Formed in 2014, the SOB Committee partnered with the city of Mill City to assess and restore the historic bridge in time for the 2019 Centennial Celebration of the bridge’s placement over the North Santiam River in 1919.

Mill City’s Historic Railroad Bridge was built in 1888 and was eventually moved to Mill City by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1919 where it replaced the original bridge made of wooden timbers. The current structure is the last remaining Phoenix Column bridge in Oregon.

“Recent donations from the A.J. Frank Family Foundation, NW Farm Credit Services, Santiam Brewing and private donors totaled $56,000

Repairs slated include repair to the understory and new decking, railing and lighting, she said.

The Ausland Engineering Group of Eugene evaluated the bridge’s condition and estimate the project cost at $400,000, which will be split between the SOB committee and the city. “The SOB’s have been busy selling T-shirts, buttons and note cards and

raising funds through special events, Go Fund Me, and major donor requests,” Harrington said. “Large and small donations have come in from across the nation. We even had a $5 donation from a young girl in Happy Valley.” The bridge reflects the special connection that Mill City and the North Santiam Canyon have had

with the railroad. In 1887, Santiam Lumbering Company was formed, and Mill City was established in anticipation of the railroad reaching the area in 1888. In 1971 the last train crossed the bridge. “We are delighted that the community has come together with enthusiasm and support for this important project,” she said.

Harrington and Thomas agree that restoring Mill City’s Historic Railroad Bridge will enhance civic vitality in the North Santiam Canyon. “The committee is committed to preserving a historic structure which provides much community enjoyment,” Harrington said. “Restoring the bridge will lay the foundation for another 100 years of public use and enjoyment.

Lyons + Mehama Two Irish brothers, James and Henry Lyons, named the community south of the Santiam River after themselves in the 1880s. The city of Lyons was incorporated in 1958. Services include restaurants, stores, service stations, beauty salons, churches, a gift shop, the Mari-Linn School, Lyons City Hall, Lyons Post Office, a fire department, a ball field and a public library. The area offers many outdoor entertainment opportunities, including wooded trails for walkers, joggers, bikers and hikers; natural wetlands; fishing and boating access to the North Santiam River; Freres City Park and John Neal Campground.

Mehama, an unincorporated community north of the Santiam River, was named after Mehama Smith, the wife of James Smith, who laid out the town site in the 1870s. The city is most easily found by exiting Highway 22 at the flashing yellow light at Highway 226, near Gene’s Meat Market. This iconic local butcher shop serves locally raised meats and an unofficial welcome center to the region and communities that embrace small-town style. The Mehama Fire Hall is the center of many community activities.

Gates was founded as a settlement for miners and loggers who lived in the area during the winter months. A post office was established in February 1882.

Ten years later W.R. Robertson, then postmaster, moved the post office across the river to a place called Gatesville. The name of the post office was changed to Gates, which became the name of the city when it was incorporated in 1950. Gates is a peaceful little town located three miles east of Mill City along the North Santiam River. Several small pristine creeks and tributaries run through or near Gates, including Rock Creek, Little Rock Creek and Mad Creek.

In 1886 four entrepreneurs from Stayton gave Mill City its name when they purchased land next to a falls on the North Santiam River. The men had machinery hauled up on wagons from Stayton and constructed a mill. A small community formed around the mill in the following years and Mill City’s first post office was established in 1888. The city was incorporated in 1947.

visitors’ center and retail stores. It is subdivided by the scenic North Santiam River; north of the river is Marion County and south of the river is Linn County. The two dams that control the river flows are well upstream from Mill City, which means great salmon and steelhead fishing and lots of river recreation.

Today Mill City is the largest community in the North Santiam Canyon. Recreational opportunities include three parks that offer playgrounds, boating, fishing, water activities and picnicking.

Detroit

Diane Stevenson

Detroit was founded during the construction of the Oregon Pacific Railroad. The name was selected because of the large population of people from Detroit, Michigan, who had settled in the region in the 1870s. A post office was established in 1891, and Detroit began to prosper as a center for the logging industry in the 1920s. The city of Detroit was incorporated in 1952, the same year that it was relocated to higher ground due to the construction of the Detroit Dam. Remnants of the original town occasionally make their ghostly appearance on exposed

portions of the lakebed – including a pioneer-era wagon relic trapped in the mud. The completion of the dam, and the filling of the lake it created, transformed the city from a logging community into one of the most popular tourist attractions in Oregon. Detroit today offers an appealing balance of small-town friendliness and recreational excitement. The lake is a popular location for boating, fishing, swimming, sailing and other water sports. Aside from water activities there

Two trail systems offer Detroit Lake visitors options for fun. The trailhead for Tumble Ridge Trail #3380, a moderate uphill 5.3 mile hike, is located near Tumble Creek on the northwest shore of the lake. Trail #3381 to Dome Rock and #3379 to Tumble Lake, where campsites, huckleberries and Tumble Falls await explorers, branch off from #3380 after about four miles. Parking at Mongold Day Use Area is by fee or forest pass. On the southeast bank, trail #3449 to Stahlman Point offers a moderate to difficult 2.5 mile hike from 1,700 to 3,000 feet. The trailhead is 3.5 miles up Blowout Road.

Detroit features motels, bed and breakfasts, rental cabins, campground facilities, RV parks, and retreat and conference facilities. Restaurants, grocery stores and marinas offer their services and goods as well. The city hosts events held throughout the year, including the July “Fireworks over the Lake” celebration.

Idanha + Marion Forks Idanha’s original name was Muskrat Camp. It later adopted the name Idanha, a name that was inspired by the Natural Mineral Water Company in Soda Springs, Idaho. The company bottled water called “Idan-Ha.” The Oregon Pacific Railroad system was completed along the North Santiam River up to Idanha in 1889 but construction didn’t continue eastward because of a lack of funding. The post office was established in 1895 and the city was incorporated in 1950. Idanha is the smallest town in the North Santiam Canyon and the highest settlement along the North Santiam River. Located in the shadow of Mt. Jefferson three miles east of Detroit, Idanha has a store, café,

post office, library and a city park. It is located about halfway between Salem and Sisters.
