Welcome DINE

With rich history, charming downtowns and scenic beauty, Silverton – Oregon’s Garden City – and Mount Angel – Village of the Bells – offer engaging places to put down roots and grow dreams.

If you’re looking for a light lunch, a traditional steak dinner, or Northwest, Thai, Mexican, German, Chinese cuisine, there are restaurants presenting entrees made from local ingredients, along with bakeries, a wine bar, brew pubs, intriguing food carts and several good coffee houses.

SHOP

Downtown Silverton buzzes with excitement during the monthly First Friday art exhibit openings, May’s Pet Parade, June’s Strawberry Festival, August’s Homer Davenport celebration and December’s warm and memorable Christmas tree lighting. Chocolate treats, collectibles, books, jewelry, electronics and apparel are just some of the offerings in the center of town. From mid-May through mid-October Town Square Park bustles with commerce as farmers meet their customers at the Saturday morning Farmers Market.

Mount Angel offers lederhosen (traditional German leather pants), handmade crafts, and classic, friendly, small town shops. When Oktoberfest comes – September’s harvest festival – village streets fill with Bavarian chalets creating a bustling marketplace.

Historic downtown Silverton combines interesting shops and fine restaurants with entertaining festivals and colorful outdoor murals telling tales from our past. Preservation and renovation projects lace the downtown corridor – like the 1935 Palace Theatre, still a first-run movie house, and Mac’s Place, serving up cold brews to the thirsty since 1885. The loving and detailed respect for the past extends to Freedom Memorial Plaza – a monument to Silverton’s war casualties – erected across the creek from downtown.

RELAX

The Oregon Garden’s more than 20 specialty gardens have gracefully matured, including a Children’s Garden with family-friendly activities, the oak grove with the 400-year-old Signature Oak tree, and soothing water features and vibrant wetlands. The Gordon House adjoining the Garden is the only home open to the public in the Pacific Northwest designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Oregon Garden Resort at the top of the hill offers complete spa, meeting and wedding facilities.

Mount Angel is closely tied to its Bavarian roots and spiritual legacy. Its Heritage Trail takes walkers and bikers up to Mount Angel Abbey’s library and museum at the top of the butte and back down to the valley floor to the Queen of Angels Monastery, and notable points in between.

EXPLORE

The countryside is ripe with history and adventure, too. Family farms, nurseries and wineries offer opportunities to pick berries, apples or peaches, find a Christmas tree, or taste wine made from the grapes of local vineyards. Wineries hold open houses on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving weekends and many are open at other times or by appointment.

Grow Hop vines, vineyards, nurseries, tree farms, hazelnut orchards, berries, wheat and flower fields – the drive to Silverton and Mount Angel inspires with nature’s bounty. Along the way on summer days, fields awash in brilliant red poppies or gigantic golden sunflowers invite photos. Trim little roadside stands welcome berry, corn and tomato buyers. Late in the year, cars and trucks topped with freshly cut Christmas trees roll by. The surrounding fields provide a patchwork quilt of colors and a drive that refreshes the mind and lifts the spirit. Our farming communities trace their roots to the families that homesteaded the land in the mid-to-late-1800s. Locals recall when grass seed fields once teamed with strawberries and how vineyards replaced row crops. It all changes with the times, but like the soil, it’s rich in heritage.

Service Whether it’s on the athletic field, classroom, business world or public service, our communities strive to be and to offer the best. COMMUNITY RESOURCES Silverton Together, a community-based non-profit, has programs that reach out to all generations – infants to seniors. They bring people and services together, whether for learning parenting skills, meeting new friends, or volunteering. Both staff and volunteers serve as community connectors, linking programs to those in need, from migrant workers to victims of domestic violence, to middle schoolers in need of a mentor. By bringing together businesses, government, clubs and individuals, Silverton Together has been a guiding force in developing activities including Celebration of Cultures Day, Free Fish Day, Celebrate Families Community Picnic and Celebrate Families Holiday Festival. Silverton Area Community Aid (SACA) is on a mission: building community, sharing food. It began in 1950 when the railroad station agent and the principal of the elementary school recognized a growing need among low income families. Over the years their efforts evolved into SACA. Today the staff and volunteers provide food and emergency aid four days a week. SACA links people to social services. Its goal is to meet the emergency situations in the community promptly with as little red tape as possible. Silverton Together and SACA are located in the Silverton Community Center, 421 S. Water St.

Silverton Together can be reached at 503-873-0405; SACA at 503-873-3446. Silverton Senior Center, 115 Westfield St., offers lunch weekdays at 11:29 a.m. and a variety of classes, games, trips and volunteer opportunities. Everyone 60 and older is welcome to join in; 503-873-3093. Silverton Indoor Park, 203 W. Main St., provides preschoolers a dry place to play on rainy weekday mornings, silvertonindoorpark@gmail.com. St. Joseph Shelter was established by the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. Angel in 1988. The shelter is a ministry of hospitality providing meals, housing, clothing, advocacy, referrals, emergency assistance and a supportive community. Mission Benedict is a companion program that distributes food, clothing, and emergency aid to area families in need. Operated almost entirely by volunteers, it is sponsored through the efforts of the Benedictine Sisters, Mount Angel’s St. Mary Parish, and Mount Angel Abbey. Both are located at 925 S. Main St., Mount Angel, 503-845-6147. Mission Benedict is open Wednesdays, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. and Fridays, 1 - 4 p.m. Mount Angel Seniors have a community center and craft store at 195 E. Charles St. It is open Monday and Saturday 11 a.m. 4 p.m. and Tuesday – Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Lunch is served Tuesday and Thursday. For information call 503-845-6998.

HEALTH RESOURCES In December 2015, the governing boards for Silverton Health and Legacy Health signed a merger agreement, becoming Legacy Silverton Medical Center. Legacy pledged to invest more than $60 million over eight years to support and grow programs and services for Silverton Health. Sarah Fronza, interim president/CEO of Silverton Health, said Legacy understands the importance of community healthcare. “We will continue to have our board and our foundation and we will continue to have a h r Food Boot est Voluntee rf be to Ok l Mount Ange orn. voice on how things happen,” she said. Legacy Silverton Medical Center also operates clinics in Silverton, Mount Angel, Keizer and Woodburn. Residents have access to quality healthcare close to home. Specialists include general and secular surgery, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, urology, podiatry, orthopedics and obstetrics. Silverton and Mount Angel also have dentists, vision specialists, chiropractic care, physical therapy, integrative medicine and mental health professionals.

SAFETY RESOURCES The badges may read Silverton or Mount Angel but the four police and fire district agencies often work together and share the same goals – to protect, educate and serve the citizens of their communities. Silverton Police Department takes a leadership role in developing strong partnerships with the community and service providers to solve problems. The department is a full service, 24-hour department. It also contracts with a domestic violence advocate and a Peer Court coordinator. It is located in City Hall, 306 S. Water St., 503-873-5326. Silverton Fire District was created by a vote in 1992, but volunteer firefighting has been a community tradition since the “Eagle Hook and Ladder No.1” was formed in 1883. The district protects 106 square miles with five stations, six paid staff and 70 volunteer

firefighters. Volunteers receive training, recognition, some benefits, and a committed and involved support group. Volunteers must be 18 or older, live or work near a station, have a valid Oregon Driver’s license, and be able to complete required training. Applications can be picked up at the main station, 819 Rail Way NE, 503-873-5328. Mount Angel Police Department is a full service 24/7 operation. The staff, charged to promote the essential partnership between the department and the citizens it serves, includes the chief, sergeant, two part-time administrative assistants, five full-time officers, and four reserve officers. Offices are located in City Hall, 5 N. Garfield St., 503-845-9294. The Mount Angel Fire District is a force of approximately 40 volunteers, an office administrator and

the chief. In 2012 the community passed a bond measure to replace two aging frontline fire engines. Volunteers are welcomed into training annually. For information contact the station at 300 Monroe St., 503-845-2438.

AMERICAN LEGION POST 89 Jim Kosel, 503-845-6119, legion.org

Mount Angel’s Kennedy High School completed a major face-lift in 2016 thanks to a $10.4 million bond approved in 2013. Improvements included a new commons area, a cyber café, a weight room adjacent to the cafeteria, a reinforced gym floor, and energy efficient updates. The bond also provided funds for improvements to Mount Angel Middle School and St. Mary’s Public Elementary School. District office: 890 E. Marquam St., 503-845-2345.

Both the SIlverton and Mount Angel communities have invested in education with recent bond measures. The Silverton High School Pine Street campus opened in 2009, realizing a long-held community dream and creating a learning environment some small colleges could envy. With a capacity of 1,400 students, the school offers an expanded media and technology center, a 600-seat theater, gym with weight training and sports medicine facilities, state-ofthe-art science rooms, art rooms with natural light, choir and band classrooms, plus a 30,000 sq. ft. career

Chamber members not only support the vision, they roll up their sleeves to dive into the work. “The Chamber board wants to be sure that downtown can be filled and vibrant – new paint, façade improvement, signage advice and so on. We want to build on the successes we already have and keep the momentum,” Executive Director Stacy Palmer said.
