Founded by Drury Stayton on 1872, and incorporated in 1891, Stayton originally attracted those interested in the availability of it’s inexpen sive and plentiful water supply to generate power, and became home to numerous mills, perhaps most famously the Paris Woolen Mills. Later, the area transitioned to a more agricultural focus, which continues to be the mainstay of the area to this day. In addition to those agricultural roots, Stayton also boasts wonderful locally-owned small businesses, manufacturing, and a state-of-the-art hospital system with extensive medical facilities that serves as one of the areas largest employers.

The rich history, local schools, and strong sense of community, continue to draw people back to the area to raise their families. In the same way, it has likewise become a destination for those interested in getting away from the bigger city and finding a comfortable and friendly place to slow down and enjoy life.

Stayton is well known for its abundance of local parks, beautiful library & covered swimming pool, as well as its expanding downtown, thanks to the joint efforts of the City of Stayton, the Chamber and most notably Revitalize Downtown Stayton.

Certainly, as the largest town in the region, Stayton has the best of both worlds, a small town feel, with friendly neighbors. as well as first class amenities and resources, all in proximity to larger cities, mountains and the Central Oregon desert.

In recent years, Stayton has begun to see an expansion to its community and a resurgence to its atypical historic downtown, which can be found two street east of the main thorough fare. After nearly two decades of decline, historic downtown Stayton now boasts over 70 area businesses, new restaurants, service providers and retail offerings as well as the iconic Star Cinema, a local favorite. Buildings continue to be updated, thanks in part to the valiant efforts of Revitalize Downtown Stayton, a passionate group of determined and creative new volunteers to breathe new life into historic downtown through façades, building improvements, and events.

Scio, a rural community in Linn County, is the tenth oldest town in Oregon, and was incorporated in 1866. It is perhaps most famous for its scenic winding roads and picturesque Covered Bridges. The self-guided Covered Bridge Tour consists of six Scio area bridges, Weddle, Gilkey, Hoffman, Larwood, Hannah, and Shimanek bridg es, with a seventh, a replica of the Jordan Bridge, in the sistering town of Stayton. The tour is quite popular for cyclists and motorists alike.

Scio is an agricultural mecca, raising grass seed, vegetables, and livestock, most nota bly sheep. Scio celebrates this long-standing heritage each May with the Linn County Lamb & Wool Fair, which began in 1949. The town itself surrounds Thomas Creek, which flows from Snow Peak into the North and South Santiam Rivers. Step back in time, where the land and friendly people will charm you with history and serenity.

SANTIAM

The Santiam Canyon is comprised of 670 square miles and includes the cities of Lyons, Mehama, Mill City, Gates, Detroit, & Idanha. Not your traditional “canyon,” the area is a lush forest that runs along the North Santiam River.

Although devastating wildfires ravaged the area in 2020, local collaborative efforts and exten sive funding have had a huge positive impact in the area, helping area residents and businesses rebuild and even enhance the communities, post-fire, especially the town of Detroit, which, due to the Lake there, has been and continues to be an attraction for families, as well as outdoor and water sports enthusiasts of all kinds.

The communities of Aumsville and Turner join to make up the Cascade School district, with Turner Elementary celebrating 100 years of learn ing in 2022. These communities, set amid fertile farmland and meandering creeks, are also home to a variety of local industries including lumber production and multiple national modular building manufacturers.

The area boasts a variety of community assets and outdoor attractions including the Aumsville Ponds, the Brian Haney Me morial Skate Park, the community splash pad in Aumsville’s Wildwood Park, the Turner trails, and the popular Turner Lake. In August, Aumsville hosts the annual Corn Festival, a local tradition spanning more than 50 years!

Silver Falls State Park/Trail of 10 Falls: One of the best loved outdoor attractions in Oregon, hikers can see all 10 waterfalls in a loop trail. Those interested in a shorter experience can visit the most iconic spot, South Falls, all on paved trails.

Abiqua Falls: This 102-foot waterfall near Scotts Mills is part of the same geological formation that created the waterfalls at Silver Falls State Park.

Shellburg Falls: The popular attraction in the Santiam State For est also includes mountain biking areas and a campground.. State officials hope to reopen access to the falls in 2023 as they work with tree and road damage from the wildfires.

Detroit Lake: Created by a dam constructed from 1949 to 1953 on the North Santiam River, Detroit Lake is one of the state’s prime recreation spots, with year-round fishing as well as highly popular boating and camping each year with the high season from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Turner Lake: Formerly a quarry that filled with ground water the area has become a popular local spot with the addition of a boat ramp, dock, restrooms and other amenities, including kayak and paddle board rentals.

Aumsville Ponds: The 77-acre site just outside of Aumsville is composed of wetlands and upland buffer areas and features a trail, wildlife viewing and a fishing pier. Bass, bluegill, trout and catfish are found here.

Lyons Bass Ponds: Just 1.4 miles from Lyons, the reservoir is a versa tile fishing spot whether you are fly fishing, spinning or baitcasting.

North Santiam River: This major artery of the Santiam River gurgles through the Santiam Canyon and Stayton and features dozens of parks and stopping points to fish, paddle, kayak, picnic, hike and camp, although some areas still remain affected by the 2020 wildfires.

One of the key components to livability for any community are the programs and activities offered to engage and educate our kids. Families throughout the region can expect the best. Stayton has a state-of-the-art Library and in door year-round swimming pool, Turner hosts an outdoor pool, and there are a variety of local youth sports programs that offer opportunities for kids to stay active year-round.

In 2018, the Santiam Teen Center became a reality, offering year-round programming to engage the practical and so cial-emotional needs of local middle and high school students in the area. Investing in our children is an investment in the future of our communities and is a clearly evidenced priority for schools, businesses and local organizations who call our region home.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you. Ten months ago, I got into the race for State Representative to give Santiam Canyon and East Salem families a strong voice in the capitol. Just over two years ago, as we struggled to navigate COVID-19, we were hit by a once-in-a-generation

and thoughts on a better direction for Oregon. It is abundantly clear that the leadership in the State Capitol matters on a very personal level.

The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce exists to support and advocate on behalf of our members and the broader business community throughout Stayton, Sublimity, Aumsville, Turner, Scio and the Santiam Canyon. We oper ate independently, as a business membership organization, for the primary purpose of improving economic vitality and community prosperity by inform ing, educating, and assisting, and serving the needs of local business.

The Stayton Sublimity Chamber is the hub for both business and community information, hosting the region’s most comprehensive events calendar, as well as an online employment portal and business directory on their website. We also operate the area’s Visitor Center, located at 175 E High Street in Stayton.

In addition, we are a trusted resource, helping new business start-ups and long-standing businesses alike with everything they need: from marketing, visibility, and network-building to best business practices, HR requirements, local commercial real estate availability, and workforce solutions. We create collaborative partners to benefit local business.

Our Government Affairs Committee meets monthly to discuss local and state issues, to educate those with decision-making power, and advo cate for good business policy. This is a tough job in Oregon. We work hard to develop relationships with leadership at all levels and seek to bring perspective on behalf of our business community.
