Enhancing Life
What makes this a good place to raise a family, build a business and/or live a life? Ask 10 people and you’ll get 10 answers — there are that many reasons and more to love it here. Crops soak up the sun and rain; children soak up the traditions. Neighbors wave to each other, clerks smile when you enter the shop, youths shoot hoops on the street ’til dusk. To outsiders it might seem like a trip back in time, but to locals it’s Stayton and Sublimity reaping a natural harvest of goodness. Location
is 430 to 569 feet. Most of the time when snow falls it dusts neighboring hills, not city streets.
Stayton and Sublimity are at the base of the scenic Cascade foothills at the junction of Highway 22 and the Cascade Highway, just 11 miles from Salem, Oregon's capital. Century-plus family farms dot the countryside. The beautiful mountain views remind residents and visitors of the fun nearby. Detroit Lake, 30 miles east, offers boating, fishing and camping. A little further east snowboarders and skiers hit the slopes. The Pacific Ocean is an hour to the west. Portland's big-city lights and amenities are about an hour north.
Population Stayton’s population has reached 7,700. Sublimity’s latest numbers show a population of 2,600.
Agriculture & Industry Doerfler Farms just outside of Sublimity is the largest grass seed producer in the world. The grass seed industry brings more than $750 million to Oregon annually. Neighboring Silver Mountain Tree Farms grows Christmas trees that are shipped to all 50 states, the Pacific Rim Countries, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Norpac, the area’s largest employer, puts more than 900 people to work during the peak season, processing food for those at home and internationally. Freres Lumber Co., which employs more than 400, takes the bounty of the forest to create both wood products for construction and energy. Hundreds of our residents are employed in manufacturing. Businesses like Slayden Construction and RedBuilt are woven into the fabric of the community. Shopping areas as well as medical and professional services have expanded to meet growing demand.
Transportation Stayton and Sublimity are conveniently situated at the junction of Highway 22 and Cascade Highway, 12 miles east of Interstate 5 via Highway 22. They are 13 miles east of the Salem Airport, and 80 minutes from Portland International Airport.
Climate Mountain-fresh water refreshes gardens, provides lush green lawns for summer picnics and makes inner tube rides down the Santiam River fun. Average temperatures range from 33 - 46 degrees Fahrenheit in January, the coldest month, to 50 to 83 degrees in July. A hot spell does come along once in a while, bringing temperatures in the 90s. Average annual rainfall is 53.01 inches, concentrated in December, January and February. Sublimity's elevation ranges from 485 to 565 feet above sea level. Stayton's elevation

an early settler, felt the community should be named for the ‘sublime’ scenery. During the Civil War, Sublimity was all but deserted as settlers returned to their native states. It was resettled in the 1860s and by 1874 the town was growing once more. By 1878, Sublimity boasted a hotel and rooming house, store, Catholic church, saloon, blacksmith, and Ditter’s Store. The town was incorporated in 1903.
Santiam Memorial Hospital is an acute care, not-for-profit general hospital. It doubled in size in 2012 when a 50,000 square foot, four-story addition was completed. In addition to patient rooms, the new addition houses a new Surgery Center and Family Birth Center. Recent additions in staff expertise and equipment upgrades have brought enhanced medical services and specialties to the hospital. “We continue to expand our medical services to ensure complete care right here in our community,” Terry Fletchall, Santiam Hospital CEO said. “It’s an exciting time for our hospital and our entire region.” In June 2009, Santiam Hospital expanded and updated its Emergency Department, adding new staff and equipment at that juncture also. Santiam Hospital was founded in 1953 by community leaders. Offerings include imaging and laboratory services, surgery department, birthing center, and around-the-clock emergency care. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals and the Oregon Hospital Association. The hospital also operates clinics in Sublimity, Aumsville and Mill City. 503-769-2175, www.santiamhospital.org
Saint Boniface Church In 1889, the first peals of the new bell at St. Boniface Catholic Church rang out clearly on New Year’s Day. Sadly, the bell rang out for the untimely death of the Sublimity church’s first resident pastor, Father Werner Ruettimann, 32, a native of Switzerland. He was instrumental in helping the Sisters of St. Mary open the first parochial school in Marion County in 1888. 375 SE Church St., Sublimity.
Star Cinema Hollywood first-run features and community events are presented in this 311-seat theater. It maintains its original charm – the theatre opened in 1926, moved to its present location in 1948 – with updated sound and seating. 350 N. Third Ave, Stayton. 503-767-STAR or www.starcinema.net.
History
The Brown House
Drury Smith Stayton was the pioneer father who gave each of his children a building site and enough lumber to build a home here, the first step in turning a farm into a town. Postmaster Samuel McCauley honored the founder by naming the town Stayton. It was officially created by the Oregon legislature in 1891. The area that would become Sublimity had a primitive store and a post office by 1852, and in that year the town was officially named. James Denny,
Stayton/Sublimity 2015
Pioneer businessman Charles Brown built this 3,500 sq. ft home for his family in 1902. Members of the family lived there until 1928, when it became the community’s first hospital. The Santiam Heritage Foundation acquired it in December 2001 and is in the process of restoring the historic house on First Avenue and High Street, next door to the Stayton Public Library. 425 N. he Stayton‑Jordan Bridge is one of more than 30 covered bridges in the Willamette Valley. The Jordan Bridge originally spanned Thomas Creek, east of Scio. When Linn County slated the historic structure for replacement in 1986, Stayton history buffs came together to bring the bridge to Pioneer Park.

Promoting Business
The Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce mission is to promote a thriving business climate that enhances local economic vitality and community livability. In 2014-15 we’ve been working on several projects that forward our mission in the community.
Business Retention and Expansion Survey With the help of over 30 volunteers, teams of two went to a wide variety of Stayton and Sublimity businesses to survey them on their business needs, goals, and impressions of the community. In all, 25 businesses were surveyed. The information collected will be used to develop strategic goals for the organization and region.

Economic Vitality Summit Under GROW-EDC leadership, with the assistance of the Stayton Sublimity Chamber of Commerce, on April 29th 175 community members from Aumsville up to Idhana gathered in one room to discuss creating a more vital economy for the whole region. Four main focus topics came out of the meeting: youth workforce development, tourism, fulfilling the seven characteristics of a vital community, and better use of our natural resources. This regional approach focuses on collaboration and cooperation.
Sign Code Discussion A committee of local business people met several times to discuss changes that would make the sign code more clear and consistent. The committee has met and attended several city council meetings and work sessions over the past 6 months. The end goal is to work cooperatively with the city council and planning commission to create a code that not only helps the businesses promote their business but also creates a pleasing cityscape.
Education/Business Partnership Working in conjunction with the North Santiam School District we will be kicking off the year with a Manufacturing and Trades Day on October 2nd. This is way to introduce students to careers that exist in the local region and do not require a bachelor’s degree. Many of our manufacturing facilities and trades have expressed the need for a school-to-work program. They are struggling to fill their workforce and see this issue exacerbating in the future. This event offers businesses a chance to recruit future employees and show the students what each job has to offer.
