2018 Visitor’s Guide 5

Step Back in Time Hemmed in by prairies, hills, and creeks, the beautiful terrain that encompasses Silverton, Mount Angel, and nearby Scotts Mills was called Silverton Country by the pioneers that settled this area. The city of Silverton was officially founded in 1854. While the timber and flour mills may be long gone, there are plenty of reminders of the past. The late 19th Century architecture of Downtown Silverton comprises a National Historic District and the Silverton Country Historical Society has recently begun to install interpretive sidewalk markers near notable landmarks. A similar project has taken off in Mount Angel. Our communities are conscious of the past, dedicated to preserving it, and are looking forward to sharing it with you.

Silverton Country Historical Society & Museum 428 S. Water St., Silverton 503-873-7070 silvertonmuseum.org Open Saturdays & Sundays, 1 - 4 p.m. from March through November. Donations accepted. A remarkable collection of regional history is on display in the 1908 Ames-Warnock-Burch House. Each room illustrates different aspects of life in Silverton over the last 150 years. Original cartoons by local “country boy” and William Randolph Hearst’s top cartoonist, Homer Davenport, are part of the collection. The grounds also offer a look inside Silverton’s train depot and a World War II lookout post.

Frank Lloyd Wright – The Gordon House 869 W. Main St., Silverton 503-874-6006 • thegordonhouse.org Open to pre-registered tours Tuesdays, Thursdays – Sundays. Adults: $20; accompanied minors are free. This unique structure was conceived by Wright as an example of his Usonian design in 1957, and built in the Wilsonville area in 1964 for Evelyn & Conrad Gordon.

The house was rescued from demolition and moved to Silverton next to the Oregon Garden. It stands as the only Wright building in Oregon, and one of the few in the Northwest open to the public.

Trinity Lutheran Church Historic Windows 500 N. Second St., Silverton 503-873-2635 • trinitysilverton.org Guided and self-guided tours by appointment. Donations accepted for restoration efforts. 18 stained glass windows depicting the Lord’s Prayer were crafted by the Kokomo Stain Glass Factory in Indiana and were installed in this church in 1919.

Gallon House Bridge Gallon House Road, connects Downs and Hobart Roads, between Silverton and Mount Angel. Built in 1916, this is one of Oregon’s oldest covered bridges and the only one in Marion County you can still drive through. This pleasant spot on Abiqua Creek was near a moonshining operation – a “gallon house.” BANNER: Mount Angel citizens, early 20th Century – Mt. Mount Angel Abbey One Abbey Dr., Saint Benedict 503-845-3030 • mountangelabbey.org Accessible to the public during daylight hours. Mount Angel takes its name from Engelberg, Switzerland – the homeland of the Benedictine monks that settled on a nearby butte in the 1880s. The monks have operated a monastery and seminary ever since. The campus has a church, coffee/gift shop, a retreat center, and – more recently – a brewery (with a tap room to open soon).

The jewel of the Benedictine community that developed Mount Angel, this Gothic Revival-style church was completed in 1912. Its 200-foot tower is a familiar sight on the horizon. The church has been restored after a powerful 1992 earthquake and its steeples were renovated for the church’s recent centennial.

Charles St., Mount Angel Ringing times: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The largest glockenspiel in the United States comes to life, expressing the history of Mount Angel through locally produced music and near-life size wooden carvings of important local characters.

GeerCrest Farm & Historical Society

Copperglance

12390 Sunnyview Rd. N.E., Salem • 503-873-3406 • geercrest.org See website for events calendar. Founded by Oregon Trail pioneers Ralph & Mary Geer in 1848, this rare historic site serves as an active homestead practicing agrarian culture for schools and families to experience. There are monthly farm dinners, overnight and camping opportunities, and events throughout the year – and lots of goats. One particularly unique relic is a little bit of “graffiti” on the 1851 farmhouse by Ralph & Mary’s grandson, world-famous political cartoonist Homer Davenport.

Created to Inspire Artists of all disciplines call Silverton and Mount Angel home. As early as the late 19th Century, a community of free thinkers took root in Silverton – allowing cartoonist Homer Davenport, photographer June Drake, and others an immersive environment to develop their skills. The Benedictine Sisters at Queen of Angels Monastery in Mount Angel fostered an arts college in the 1960s that attracted many talented individuals from around the country, most of whom decided to stay and establish the area’s artistic guilds and studios that give the towns their style and sense of creative fun today. BOBBIE MURAL Original painting by Lori Rodrigues

Since 1992, the Silverton Mural Society has given open walls of Silverton an extra splash of life. The murals are painted and maintained by local and regional artists, and depict colorful personalities from Silverton’s adventurous history (like Bobbie the Wonder Dog, above right), plus a few surprises too (the Christmas-themed mural even has a mailbox to the North Pole). See map on page 16 for a location guide to all 26 murals.

Oregon’s largest state park is located just 14 miles upstream from Silverton Reservoir. The Trail of Ten Falls is the main attraction, a moderate seven mile hike. You can really feel the power of water when you walk behind some of the falls. The tallest single waterfall is South Falls at 177 feet. There are over 30 miles of additional trails to hike, bike, or ride by horse. The South Falls Lodge is a cozy, historic gem. There are also camping opportunities and on-site cabins. Agriculture is an important part of Silverton and Mount Angel’s economy. Hops and grapes for beer and wine, hazelnuts and berries, dairy and meat, plus many vegetables that rotate each year. Many jobs in the two cities are directly related to food production and packaging. In the 1960s, local grocer Orville Roth founded the first of his many stores in Silverton, continuing a tradition in offering healthy, locally-grown food.
