“There is a driving force more powerful than steam, electricity and atomic energy: the will.” ALBERT EISNTEIN We are a working group of artists each of us with a unique style of creativity from different generations, most of us from Spain, living and working in Madrid and Barcelona. In spite of our different styles and schooling, most of us have coincided during our training at many exhibitions, projects and art events. But this is the first time we have decided to create a collective project called ON THE VERGE-ILLUSTRATION ART & DESIGN CREW managed by Mapy D.H. and team member Jota, to introduce our work in the KUNST SCHIMMER ART FAIR #2.

THE CURRENT ISSUE EQUATION: LACK OF MEANS = PLENTY SOLUTION by Mapy D.H.

Writing the statement speech for this project is suddenly becoming a real nightmare. I´ve never been a curator and don´t pretend to be one. There are no main concepts or subjects that link together our exhibitions other than our desire to show our art with the lack of means that we have but with the best ways and intentions, and to show ourselves to the world. ON THE VERGE is a project trying to bring it's artists work, regardless of their style to the audience. The condition that the art world finds itself in Spain is pathetic (due to today's political, social and economic climate). There are plenty of good artworks and many talented artists. We have a great deal of exhibitions and events but unfortunately there´s not too much support for the artist, and practically we have to survive on our own to keep producing, showing and even getting on with our lives, some of us are unemployed. Luckily, as Albert Einstein said: “There is a driving force more powerful than steam, electricity and atomic energy: the will”. Will to work is what we have, it is also said that bad times sharpens the

inventiveness and sometimes the results are amazing. I remember a visit to Patricia Mateo's studio where I asked her 'Why do you paint on mirrors? expecting some rhetorical or twisted reply from a typical curator "metaphysics is the mirror image of matter that is not like the shadows in the myth of Plato's cave blah.... blah… blah." Instead she simply said: "well it's because I was looking for a surface that wouldn't absorb so much paint.” For me knowing this fact didn't mean that I just saw her work as something produced accidentally as a result of attempting to save paint. On the contrary, I enjoyed it more. This is an example of what I hope the spectator will experience from our space at the show. The more artists I get know and the more I know about their lives, the more passionate I feel about the art world. ON THE VERGE is a project without an expiry date. It´s totally open to any suggestions or proposals (curators, art galleries, etc). This is not a closed working group, we are not the only artists exhibiting at this first show. Anybody can join this project. Any artist, illustrator, designer, etc , that wishes to join our group is welcome. We will try to keep this project going, to exhibit and show whenever and wherever we are invited it is feasible to do so. We have been supported by Cecilia Espejo to participate in the KUNST SCHIMMER ART FAIR #2. We want to sincerely thank her. We truly admire her hard and good work. I would also like to thank all the artists that took part with their effort, help and excitement. Without them, none of this would have any meaning.

Degree in Fine Arts, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 1993 David Trullo is a visual artist based in Madrid. He has had numerous exhibitions both in his own country and all over Europe and the Americas. He has participated in art fairs and festivals such as ARCO, Estampa and PhotoEspaña in Spain and Art Miami and The Armory Show in the US. He was artist in residence in the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2002 and at the Karl Hofer Society, Universität der Kunst Berlin in 2010. His photo and video artworks deal with the iconographical representation of beauty and the different levels attached to representation, context, reproduction and distribution of images. In all of Trullo’s photographic work there is a connection with history, with the culture and belief of the Western world, where subjects such as prejudice, intolerance, religion, gender, desire or pain look into the past with a contemporary eye.

Tattoo Artist, Illustrator, and Customizer born and bred in Madrid. Whilst studying for a degree I worked for various studios in Madrid. Self-taught from a very early age. I used drawing as a form of escapism and little by little it became a way of life. The subject matter for my work is very varied; My inspiration comes from Japanese culture especially from their engravings and traditional tattoos, from modern Greek and Roman mythology, paganism, Lodges, Archaic beliefs, Custom Aesthetic ,the Secret Societies, the Occult, Comics, Horror Films, and old school American tattoos. The techniques used are mixed and depend on the surface: paper, wood, cardboard, clothing, hats and anything that can be considered a suitable surface to customize. I like recycling materials, restoring if necessary and working with it. Lately I've been painting on skateboards and longboards that are now too worn to use.

Born in Madrid. Fine Arts B.A. UCM 1996-2002. Erasmus Grant 2002. Camberwell Colllege of Arts. London. Lives and works in Madrid. Artist, Art Director, Graphic Designer and Illustrator. Her artwork is rich and varied. It´s mostly based on her ironic view of the world expressed through the esthetic and symbolisms taken from religious icons, mexican related art and culture, B-Movies, old school tattoo, comics using many different techniques that go from illustration to installation. Some of her latest works are the “STREET ART MAGNETS” project, based on saint/religious figures intervened and placed on every inconceivable corner. The “STREET ART MAGNETS” are part of the ”ECCE HOMOS SERIES” inspired by Cecilia Giménez’, the well known “restorer” from the Ecce Homo from Borja (a little town in Teruel, Spain) painting. In another of her many professional skills as a “craftie” she takes as reference many skull designs, the Mexican papier maché sketelons and her influence from underground styles such as punk, gothic and psychobilly fashion to create her own collection of handmade accessories. Each and everyone made as a unique piece.

Nuria Gil (Madrid, 1977) video artist, photographer and writer, has shown her work in group exhibitions, some solo shows, books and magazines in different museums and galleries over the world such as Centro Pompidou, Triennale di Milano, Shanghai Art Museum,Tokyo Shiodomeitalia Creative Center, MAK DESIGN SPACE / Austrian Museum of Contemporary Art, Matadero Madrid, Medialab Prado, CCCB, Fundación Joan Miró, Mouvart, Loop, La Casa Encendida... Latidoamérica, her video notebook won an award in Bang! Festival and it has been exhibited in BAC! (CCCB), Loop (CCDFB), Joan Miró Foundation, FEM (Spain), Mouvart (France) and Experimenta! (Brasil). Poetika, her latest video art, has been screened in Cartographic (Matadero Madrid), Espacio menosuno and Loop 2011 (Spain).

She is also member of Confusion Group Art Collective with whom she has directed the three awards winner short/performance “Sorry to bother you”, selected in more than 40 international festivals. Their animation short, “Oink!” has been selected in more than 20 international festivals.

Born in Madrid (1953) Fine Arts BBAA UCM (1972) Lives and works in Madrid. She is currently working (painting) on mirrors. Through her work, she tries to make the spectatator take part by being an integral part of the painting. Always ironically, she brings her characters to life via their interaction with the observer. She alternates her mirrors with postcards that she has altered. In these postcards she tries not to take the established for granted. Her objective is to change their context, to give them a different vision, to remove that weight by looking at them from an ironic context. The idea is that the image in itself suggests different meanings and brings a smile to your lips. The chosen support are postcards found in visits to different museums. The contrast between the memory of that image we have seen so many times, with the new focus, makes our brain act, even for a few seconds, to find a new meaning in the piece.

Pol Gorezje (Zaragoza -Spain- 1976) is an emerging artist who lives in Barcelona with a significant presence in Madrid's artistic scope. Basically self-taught, his paintings began to be exhibited in 2009 and since then, his artistic inroads extend to the field of photography, writing and audiovisual. In his paintings, Gorezje uses as support images taken from fashion magazines. The force of his brush transforms them into a parallel reality, criticizing the stereotypical beauty around us. His men and women are ambiguous, they let discover us another kind of beauty, sometimes grotesque, sometimes impossible, but always with an aesthetic and beautiful background. Gorezje leads us into a game of appearance, archetypes and everything that is not apparent to the naked eye.

Born in Rosario (Argentina), he has been living in Madrid for more than 10 years working as art director, illustrator and interdisciplinary artist. His eclectic work is expressed through the realistic portrait or the grotesque graphics and it is also fed with ornamental motifs of different indigenous arts that he meets on his way, merging it all with his inner world, spontaneously and naturally. Social issues, consumerism or independent art occupy a central place in the speech of the artist.

Fine Arts B.A. Computense University of Madrid. Raúl García Collado. Lives and works in Madrid. Many of the works of Raúl García Collado arise from spontaneous and experiential way. García Collado produces personal works where ideas predominate. He is interested in the symbolic world around him. Paintings, digital art and performance are some of the means to talk about a hula-hop (one of his pieces) that has struck him on the ride at the shopping center or when the philosopher teaching to redirect García Collado´s career or his own emotional state at any given time. Raúl is a great adminer of poetry and optical games.

Was born in Serbia, Subotica in 1982. 2003 Graduated at the Fine Arts Collage - Belgrade as an art teacher, 2010 finished Belgrade Faculty of Fine Arts- printmaking department. She is an artist that started very early to draw. Her first inspirations where illustrations in the books from the beginning of here education, called Bukvar. There were stories and a lot of drawings which she really liked. And there was one story about one boy who traveled around the world with his Trotinet (scooter). She found this story very interesting and it happens to follow her since than. Therefor in her art you can often see clouds, little people, she calls ¨My people¨ high in the sky and motives which are related to traveling, such as bicycles... She is also inspired by cosmos and nature while thinking - everything is connected! Working in public spaces and collaborating with other artists, she finds inspiring... She is a member of an art group named KURS. Now living, creating and teaching graphic techniques in Madrid, Spain.

Lives and works in Madrid. Royás’ work addresses the barrage of images we get from contemporary reality and current socio-political context. His work focuses on the concepts of memory, power, violence, identity, as well as the very essence of nature, including the relationship between man and nature. Royás explores the daily shock that an overwhelming and disensitizing culture of images generates. His work is not about making visible the hidden truth behind these images; rather, what is involved here is an effort to allow the image to grow in a way that brings down violence.
