n 2015, marking a return to Alfa Romeo’s rear-wheel-drive roots, the legendary Giulia nameplate was revived as a modern incarnation of the iconic compact saloon.

With a staggeringly powerful 510-hp V6 engine, extremely focused chassis, sensational Italian design, and a more upscale interior, the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio has all that it takes to stand out against the German super saloons, including the BMW M3, Audi RS4, and Mercedes-AMG C63.

30 QCOTY

Offering a thrilling driving experience that goes beyond other regular Giulia variants, the all-new Giulia Quadrifoglio isn’t only Alfa Romeo’s most potent sedan model, but the sportiest and most luxurious as well, hence deserving a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year (QCOTY) list.

The 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio is unmistakably an Alfa Romeo from a styling standpoint.

Like the lesser variants, the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio is unmistakably an Alfa Romeo from a styling standpoint. The high-performance grade’s exterior lines stand out thanks to the traditional triangular grille with a new glossy black finish, sporty hood creases, modern headlights and LED taillights, quad exhaust tips, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Aside from the 50-50 weight balance, the high-performance Giulia has very short overhangs, a long bonnet, front wings, and muscular rear wings that complete the exterior look. In terms of dimensions, the new Giulia Quadrifoglio has an overall length of 4639 mm and measures 1873 mm and 1426 mm in width and height, respectively. The luxury sports sedan also has a generous wheelbase of 2820 mm.

The top-of-the-line Quadrifoglio variant features more luxury touches, including two-tone sport leather seats and a steering wheel with red stitching. INTERIOR Just as any full-fledged sports car, the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio benefits from a driver-oriented cockpit. The dashboard is dominated by an 8.8-inch high-definition 3D Nav infotainment touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and has voice control functionality. Unlike the other regular trim levels, the top-of-the-line Quadrifoglio variant features more luxury touches, including two-tone sport leather seats and steering wheel with red stitching, the carbon-fiber interior roof, adaptive suspension, active cruise control, and a Harman Kardan sound system. For the 2020 model year, the new Giulia Quadrifoglio gains a new leather steering wheel and gear stick, along with an updated center console with more storage space and optional red or green seat belts. On the safety front, the new Giulia Quadrifoglio gains a plethora of driverassistance systems, including the Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB), Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). Similarly, the high-performance Italian sedan comes with the Integrated Brake System (IBS) as standard; this combines stability control and a traditional servo brake system. Moreover, there are innovative solutions like torque vectoring and the active aero splitter. The latter system actively manages downforce for higher performance and better grip even at high speed. Among other advanced driver assist systems, there is Traffic Sign Recognition, Traffic Jam Assist, and Driver Attention Assist.

Under the hood, there is a twin-turbo, 2.9-liter V6 engine that delivers 510 hp and 600 Nm of torque, allowing the sports sedan to go from zero to 100 km/h in a zippy 3.9 seconds.

ENGINE Fittingly, the all-new 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio is equipped with a twin-turbo, 2.9-liter V6 engine that delivers 510 hp and 600 Nm of torque, allowing the sports sedan to go from zero to 100 km/h in a zippy 3.9 seconds. The potent six-cylinder mill is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear. Suspension-wise, the super sedan is packed with a double-wishbone suspension at the front and a five-link system at the rear. This layout, along with the tuned spring and damper rates, makes the Giulia Quadrifoglio as sporty as possible on both the road and the track. The highperformance model is also fitted with an active differential and a torque-vectoring system to further enhance traction.

VERDICT Though it has been more than 20 years since Alfa Romeo offered a rear-wheel-drive sedan, the new Giulia Quadrifoglio is not only marking a historic moment for the Italian brand, but is also a real contender against the big German guns in this niche—giving them a run for their money, thanks to its brutish looks, amazing performance, and upscale interior.

ASTON MARTIN DBX

36 QCOTY

QCOTY 37

A

few years ago, boutique carmakers traditionally known for sports and luxury cars decided to enter into high-quality SUV territory, acknowledging the simple fact that people will always buy SUVs!

In 2002, Porsche defied the odds by introducing its instantbestseller Cayenne. The German sports brand broke with Porsche’s motorsports heritage by making the last thing expected from a sports-carmaker: a high-riding SUV!

38 QCOTY

Carmakers like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Maserati, and Lamborghini followed suit. Now, it is Aston Martin’s turn to woo the ultra-high-end luxury SUV masses and launch a vehicle that combines the outstanding and brutal top speed of a supercar with the functionality and off-road capabilities of an SUV!

exterior Style-wise, the DBX is a bona fide Aston Martin. Up front, it is unmistakably one of the British brand’s models thanks to its wide grille and the familiar-looking, oval-shaped headlights sweeping back toward the fenders. Another exterior highlight is the pair of rectangular LED daytime running lights, acting as surrounds for the aero ducts placed at the bottom corners.

Style-wise, the DBX is a bona fide Aston Martin

Other design highlights include the sculpted hood with blade-like openings in the center, side skirts inspired by the DB11, a coupe-like profile, and thin LED taillights featuring a lightbar design that form an arch that stretches the width of the rear—a design that is taken from the Vantage. Two spoilers—a prominent ducktail spoiler, along with a secondary spoiler stretching out from the roof complete the exterior package. In terms of dimensions, the super-SUV has an overall length of 5039 mm and measures 1998 mm and 1680 mm in width and height, respectively. The 2020 DBX also has a generous wheelbase of 3060 mm.

QCOTY 39

Aside from the high-quality materials that are easy to spot, a digital instrument cluster measuring 12.3-inches helps to accentuate the sophisticated nature of the interior INTERIOR Unlike the exterior, the DBX’s interior shares little with other Aston Martin cars. The cabin looks like a better place to spend time, thanks to the highquality materials, including an industry-first application of a fabric made from 80% wool, premium leather, and Alcantara upholstery. Elsewhere surfaces are covered with metal, wood, or glass. Aside from the high-quality materials that are easy to spot, a digital instrument cluster measuring 12.3-inches, in addition to the three-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel, and the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay as standard, help to accentuate the sophisticated nature of the interior. Compared to other Gaydon vehicles, the dashboard also looks unique and pretty. There’s a “floating” center console that is clean, intuitive, and userfriendly, adding to the spacious feeling of the high-riding vehicle. Luggage capacity in the DBX is 631 liters behind the second-row seats, while the 40:20:40 split-folding bench allows more flexibility and practicality. This means that this super SUV offers relatively more cargo space compared to other competitors—the luggage capacity in the Maserati Levante Trofeo and Bentley Bentayga is 616 and 575 liters, respectively!

QCOTY 41

The real treasure of the high- performance DBX is under the fresh sheet metal, where a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine is chugging out 542 hp and 700 Nm of torque.

ENGINE Fittingly, the real treasure of the high-performance DBX is under the fresh sheet metal where an AMG-sourced, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine is chugging out 542 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The same unit is mounted on both the DB11 and the Vantage. The powerful engine allows the super-SUV to rocket from zero to 100 km in just 4.5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 291 km/h. The eight-cylinder mill is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, sending power to an all-wheel-drive system. Basically, the DBX is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, but a center transfer case will send torque to the front axle when slippage is detected at the rear. The ultra-high-end luxury SUV also benefits from an active central differential and a limited-slip rear differential. The 2,245 kg-SUV also comes (as standard) with “adaptive triple volume air suspension” using a 48-volt electric anti-roll control system and electronic adaptive dampers. That means, on bumpy roads, the suspension will increase the ride by 45 mm, while on the tracks, it will be lowered by 50 mm.

VERDICT The DBX is a marvelous-looking hauler. It outshines both the boxier Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus in the design department. As for the interior, the super-SUV’s cabin is nothing like other Aston Martin models’ in terms of design and luxury amenities. Performance is also excellent, thanks to the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. Overall, the DBX is a unique super-SUV that is definitely worth a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year’s (QCOTY) list.

BEST AFFORDABLE SUV

CHANGAN CS35 PLUS

44 QCOTY

QCOTY 45

F

or many years, Chinese auto brands suffered from a reputation for copycat designs and shoddy quality. But in the past few years, the “quality” gap between the Chinese car brands and their global rivals has increasingly diminished. Changan—China’s third-biggest carmaker—has grown into a mature and confident brand, thanks to its high-quality SUV models like the CS55, CS75, CS85 Coupe, CS95, the CS35, and the CS35 Plus. Though the CS35 was Changan’s first crossover and a gamechanger when introduced in 2012, an update to the aging model was necessary in order to compete with the new subcompact crossover offerings from other Chinese, Korean, and even European rivals. Rather than launch an update, they launched a completely new model—the CS35 Plus!

46 QCOTY

Unveiled in 2018, the CS35 Plus was originally designed to be the CS35’s successor, but this plan was later changed, and Changan decided to keep both models in production. Positioned slightly above the CS35, the CS35 Plus is more than an upgraded or a so-called PLUS version of its sibling and hence has earned a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year (QCOTY) list.

exterior Style-wise, the CS35 Plus’s exterior has a fairly bold and modern design, compared to the CS35’s relatively generic lines. At the front end, its slim front grille is definitely eyecatching, if not slightly macho. It also features LED headlights and halogen fog lamps.

Style-wise, the CS35 Plus’s exterior has a fairly bold and modern design, compared to the CS35’s relatively generic lines

Other highlights include a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, a boxy profile with prominent wheel arches, stylish taillights with a connected red-light strip, chrome roof rails, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, and a diffuser-like element, to name but a few. Slotting slightly above the CS35, the 2020 Changan CS35 Plus is 4335 mm long, 1825 mm wide, and 1660 mm tall, with a 2600 mm long wheelbase. That being said, the CS35 Plus is 165 mm longer and 15 mm wider than the CS35, with a wheelbase that is longer by 40 mm.

Drivers will be greeted by a modern and sophisticated interior, which features high-quality materials INTERIOR While the exterior styling is relatively tame, drivers will be greeted by a modern and sophisticated interior, which features high-quality materials. At the same time, its dashboard feels almost cluttered! We can’t say there’s no hard plastic inside the cabin, but the few sections in which it is used have a nice finish. The Nappa grain leather seats make the cabin a pleasant place to sit! The driving position is relatively high, so drivers have better visibility. The leather-wrapped three-spoke multi-function steering wheel supports fourway adjustment for optimal comfort. Depending on the trim level, other features to highlight include a panoramic sunroof, a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat, automatic airconditioning with plasma generator and rear vents, 10-inch infotainment display, an engine start button, smart key entry system, adaptive cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system, among other premium amenities. As a compact crossover, space should obviously be scarce inside the CS35 Plus, but, surprisingly, there is enough room for three adults in the rear seat, at least for short trips. Boot space is more than adequate too (403 liters), and passengers can fold the back seat down in a 60/40 split manner, though the rear seats are unable to fold flat! Interestingly for a small SUV, Changan has installed an array of high-tech, sophisticated driver-assistance features into the CS35 Plus, including six airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), an electronic stability program (ESP), a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill start assist (HSA), hill-descent control (HDC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), front collision warning system (FCW), rear parking sensors with reverse camera, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and 360-degree panoramic view cameras, among other safety features. ENGINE At the heart of the Changan CS35 Plus, there is a 1.4-liter turbo, four-cylinder engine. The engine produces 156 hp and 260 Newton meters of torque. Power is transferred to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Suspension-wise, the CS35 Plus rides on a McPherson-strut front suspension and a Torsion beam rear suspension setup, allowing the driver to choose between three driving modes: Eco, Sport, and Snow.

VERDICT The 2020 CS35 Plus has an eye-catching design inside and out. From craftsmanship and safety standpoints the interior is attractive, while the cabin’s high configuration level seems value for money. Overall, the CS35 Plus is a well-equipped compact crossover built to offer the amenities that you would find in more expensive vehicles, but at a slightly lower price.

ith their spacious interiors, a long list of luxurious features, lofty driving position, and the ability to move up to seven occupants in comfort, mid-size and full-size SUVs have increasingly become a favorite choice for families all over the world, and especially in the Middle East. A few years back, it was thought that only the European, American, or Japanese brands could build great, large, family SUVs. Now, the Chinese carmakers have joined the lucrative, large and mid-size SUV party, aiming to get their slice of the pie!

54 QCOTY

The Changan CS95 mid-size SUV is one of several good examples. Developed jointly by Changan China and its UK R&D Center in Birmingham, the roomy CS95 went on sale in China in late 2016. Inspired by the Toyota Highlander, the 7-seater SUV has all that it takes to stand up against its local and foreign rivals alike, and hence has earned a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year (QCOTY) list.

exterior Despite its large proportions, the CS95 is still an attractive high-riding vehicle from a styling standpoint. The influences from the previous third-generation Toyota Highlander are obvious on the outside, especially at the front end with a large grille that spans nearly the entire width of the car’s nose. Other than the few similar design cues, the CS95’s exterior is unique, modern, and elegant.

Despite its large proportions, the CS95 is still an attractive high-riding vehicle from a styling standpoint

The front end features modern LED headlights and some chrome accents on the bumper, while the long hood has unique vents to further complete the modern look. On the sides, there is an almost flat roofline, and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Out back, there are stylish LED taillights with a connected red-light strip, dual-exhaust pipes, rear fog lights, and a roof spoiler. The CS95 is Changan’s largest SUV to date. It is 4949 mm long, 1930 mm wide, and 1785 mm tall, with a 2810 mm long wheelbase.

The CS95’s interior brings soft materials unique to the segment, including polished chrome accents, leather upholstery, and plenty of stitching INTERIOR Once you step into the CS95s cabin, you will be greeted by soft, highquality materials—there are very few hard plastics and inelegant design details; the overall ambiance is trendy and attractive. Better yet, the CS95’s interior brings soft materials unique to the segment, including polished chrome accents, leather upholstery, and plenty of stitching.

Key interior highlights include an 8-inch, high-resolution infotainment touchscreen, a three-spoke, leather steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, an 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, automatic air-conditioning with rear vents for the second-row seats, a ten-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, an engine start button, and smart key entry system, to name but a few. In terms of practicality, the generous 2810-mm long wheelbase means the CS95’s interior is ridiculously roomy, being able to carry up to seven passengers on board. The 2+3+2 seating configuration allows all passengers to enjoy an ample amount of legroom and headroom alike. On the safety front, the 2020 CS95 offers a plethora of driver-assistance features such as an anti-lock braking system (ABS), an electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), a traction control system (TCS), a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill-hold control (HHC), hill-descent control (HDC), blind-spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree panoramic view cameras, and ISOFIX child seat anchors, among other safety features.

ENGINE Under the fresh sheet metal, the new CS95 benefits from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine produces 233 hp and 360 Nm of torque. Linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to a 4WD system, the four-cylinder mill has a combined fuel consumption of 9.5 liters/100km. Make no mistake; the 2002-kg SUV is far from a sporty vehicle given its massive size, which makes body roll inevitable, although it is nicely controlled. The CS95 offers a smooth ride across three driving modes: Eco, Sport, and Snow.

VERDICT With so much competition in the mid-size SUV segment, the 2020 Changan CS95 looks like a solid offering in its class, thanks to its modern design, nice interior space, cutting-edge tech, and strong safety kit—all these merits bring the CS95 in line with the competition, and odds are this SUV is going to be a winner!

illed as a replacement for the 488 GTB, the 2020 F8 Tributo is the latest iteration in a long line of twoseater Ferrari berlinettas, and the most powerful midengined V8 berlinetta in the Italian brand’s history.

Unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the F8 Tributo, as its name suggests, pays homage to the Prancing Horse’s awardwinning 3.9-liter eight-cylinder engine—A series of throbbing engines that have powered Ferrari’s most iconic cars since its first road-going V8 in the 1975 Ferrari 308 GTB.

62 QCOTY

Powered by Ferrari’s twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 engine chugging out 720 hp and 770 Nm of torque, the 2020 F8 Tributo is more powerful and aerodynamic than its predecessor—the 488 GTB—despite sharing the same aluminum platform. Despite the fact that the F8 Tributo is essentially a mid-cycle upgrade of the entry-level mid-engined supercar it replaced and not a brand-new car, it successfully combines the everyday usability of the old 488 GTB with the thrilling performance of the trackready 488 Pista!

The new F8 Tributo is “essentially a bridge to a new design language,” while borrowing some design features from both the “tamed” 488 GTB and the track-focused 488 Pista.

Visually, the new F8 Tributo is “essentially a bridge to a new design language,” while borrowing some design features from both the “tamed” 488 GTB and the track-focused 488 Pista. That being said, there is a 488 Pista-inspired front bumper, a single large air scoop located in the center of the hood, a Formula One-inspired S-Duct, and horizontal LED headlights. Moving further back, there are quad LED taillights, a rear diffuser with aggressive fins, large dual exhaust tips, and a new Lexan engine cover that pays homage to the legendary Ferrari F40. In terms of dimensions, the 2020 F8 Tributo has an overall length of 4611 mm and measures 1979 mm and 1206 mm in width and height, respectively, with a 2650 mm long wheelbase.

If one needs strong proof that the new F8 Tributo is an evolved version of the old 488 GTB, the cabin is it. Though Ferrari made some upgrades to the F8 Tributo’s interior, it still reminds us of the 488 GTB’s, mainly featuring the same driver-oriented layout. Notable highlights include round air vents, a new HMI (Human Machine Interface), a new steering wheel with reduced diameter, and a new seveninch infotainment touchscreen display on the passenger-side dashboard, to name but a few. The interior is also littered with premium leather, carbon-fiber trim, and contrasting stitching, while the sport bucket seats offer maximum comfort and excellent lateral support.

ENGINE Under the hood, the new F8 Tributo is equipped with the same 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 as the 488 Pista, pumping out 720 hp and 770 Nm of torque—a 50 hp increase over the 488 GTB. The stiffenedup version of the 488 GTB catapults from zero to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and from zero to 200 km/h in 7.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 340 km/h. Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels, the eight-cylinder mill provides similar overall performance figures as the 488 Pista, albeit it is 0.05 seconds slower when it comes to the zero-to-100 km/h sprint. The chassis of the new berlinetta gains Ferrari’s latest version of the Side Slip Control (SSC 6.1). It is integrated with the E-Diff3, F1Trac, the magnetorheological suspension (SCM), and the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE) systems. The 2020 F8 Tributo is also slightly heavier than the 488 Pista (by 50 kg), while promising “better control on the limit along with greater onboard comfort” compared to the 488 GTB.

VERDICT Four years after the introduction of the 488 GTB, the new F8 Tributo not only replaces its predecessor, but also leaves its rivals behind by an even bigger margin! With a twin-turbo 3.9-liter, 720-hp V8 engine, a more aggressive look, better aerodynamics, and stateof-the-art tech, the successor to the 488 GTB is one cool supercar that has what it takes to give the likes of Lamborghini and McLaren a run for their money!

or buyers looking for understated elegance, the 2020 Ferrari Roma might be the perfect choice! Adopting the latest Italian concept of “Nuove Dolce Vita” (Pleasurable Way of Life) design, the all-new Roma is billed as the most beautifully crafted Ferrari ever made! Though the new entry-level GT is based on the front-engine Portofino convertible, it is barely recognizable as such. Simply put, the Roma is not a replacement for the Portofino. Instead, it is an addition to Maranello’s lineup. The new coupe’s flowing lines recall Ferrari’s GT cars of the 1960s more than the Italian company’s recent offerings.

Looking more sophisticated and aggressive than ever, the 2020 Honda Civic Sedan received mild styling updates, new features, and a bunch of new safety and tech features

Visually, the exterior of the latest Civic has not been extensively reworked—the updates are really minimal. Other highlights include the chrome accents thrown about here and there on the more sophisticated front grille, along with the halogen circular fog lights, the rear decklid spoiler, the C-shaped LED taillights, the rear fog lights, and new lower bumper visuals. Elsewhere, the exterior styling of the facelifted Civic is busy with lines and angles. Dimensionally speaking, the all-new 2020 Civic LX Sport has an overall length of 4630 mm and measures 1799 mm and 1416 mm in width and height, respectively. The wheelbase is 2700 mm.

Seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space for five full-size adults to get inside INTERIOR

One of the many highlights of the new Honda Civic Sedan can be found inside. Once drivers step inside the Civic’s cabin, they will be greeted by high-quality materials and fabrics. Positioned in the driver’s field of view, the 5.0-inch touchscreen for the four-speaker audio system is now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It goes without saying that the latest Civic’s interior is spacious and practical. Seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space for five full-size adults to get inside. Aside from the competitive legroom and headroom at the back, the cargo room is also plentiful. Other amenities inside the updated cabin include the automatic climate control with rear vents, three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles, Bluetooth connectivity, electric parking brake with automatic brake hold function, keyless push-button start, and cruise control. As far as the safety features go, the 2020 Honda Civic LX Sport gains an assortment of driver-assistance systems, including cruise control, an antilock braking system (ABS), an electronic brake force distribution (EBD), traction control system (TCS), and hill start assist (HAS). A tire pressuremonitoring (TPMS), vehicle stability assist (VSA), agile handling assist (AHA), and emergency stop signal systems (ESS) are also featured.

you will definitely like mashing the accelerator, or taking control using the shift paddles to choose between the virtual ratios; then the car will slur annoyingly

ENGINE No revisions have been made to the engine. The 1.6-liter four-pot still has an output of 123 hp and 151 Newton meters of torque. Hooked to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the naturally aspirated, four-cylinder unit drives the car along just nicely. The CVT gear is spookily quiet when gliding at lower speeds and lacks the boring, dull feel of many CVTs currently available on the market. However, it is decently predictable during light driving. The compact car felt slow only when ECON mode was activated. If you want the engine to push the car to its limits, don’t enable the eco mode—just avoid it! Better yet, you will definitely like mashing the accelerator, or taking control using the shift paddles to choose between the virtual ratios; then the car will slur annoyingly!

VERDICT To be honest, the current tenth-generation Civic is a real attempt at affirming Honda’s dominance in the compact-car segment. Its styling is now more aggressive and sophisticated; its interior is quiet, roomy, luxuriously tasteful, and a lot safer than before. In a nutshell, it has what it takes to keep up with the best of its rivals.

HONDA HR-V

P

icking the right small family SUV is no easy task considering the bewildering array of choice on the market. Much like picking what to watch on OSN or Netflix—there are too many choices so you often end up wasting your time just flicking up and down the channels! Here’s where the Honda HR-V comes in to save you the confusion and difficulty of choosing the right subcompact SUV. Since its arrival in 1999, the HR-V has always been ideal for buyers seeking impressive fuel economy, elevated driving position, cool styling, and good cargo space. Interestingly enough, Honda manages to tick all the right boxes with its HR-V—an SUV that’s name stands for “Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle.”

86 QCOTY

Slotting below its larger siblings, the CR-V and Pilot, the current second-generation HR-V is cruising into its fifth year in the market. The latest HR-V features a bolder exterior look, spacious interior, and a smorgasbord of new safety and tech features. There are three trim levels to choose from (DX, LX, and EX), with only one engine available across the range: the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 140 hp, and is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). We had the chance to climb behind the wheel of the EX trim, and the small SUV has by far exceeded our expectations. In a nutshell, the HR-V EX is great value for money, and even the standard model offers a wide array of premium features.

exterior In mid-2018, Honda launched a significantly upgraded version of its subcompact HR-V crossover, featuring a more modern and refreshed look. Visually, the facelifted HR-V sets itself apart from the previous model with the revamped grille that boasts a chrome strip connecting the headlights to the Honda badge in the middle, new front and rear bumpers, and the slightly refreshed headlights and taillights.

“

Visually, the facelifted HR-V sets itself apart from the previous model

The EX trim brings 17-inch alloy wheels, full-LED headlights, front bumper spoiler, fog lights, chrome door handles, and dark chrome trim. Overall, the design of the new HR-V adopts the cleaner lines of its larger high-riding sibling, the CR-V, particularly the headlamps and sloped hood. It is safe to say that the new HR-V is one of the better-looking SUVs in its class.

the latest HR-V has the most advanced driverassistance technology available. INTERIOR To be honest, we have mixed feelings about the interior of the currentgeneration HR-V. The passenger side of the dashboard is not particularly attractive, and the driving position is not particularly lofty; it’s safe to say that the HR-V is more of a high-riding hatchback than a proper SUV. However, on the flipside, the seats are comfortable and there’s plenty of space for four full-size adults to get inside—five adults can climb into the small SUV, but for short trips only! Another advantage of the facelifted HR-V is that the number of physical buttons in the center console is reduced to a minimum, minimizing distraction and allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead. Elsewhere, there is a mix of hard plastic and soft-touch materials inside the cabin. But the overall quality is good and in line with the competition. Key amenities inside the EX trim’s cockpit include the leather upholstery, height-adjustable driver’s seat, Magic Seats for the second row, threespoke steering wheel with shift paddles, 6.8-inch touchscreen for the fourspeaker audio system, electric parking brake with automatic brake hold function, keyless push-button start, and cruise control. Regarding safety, the latest HR-V has the most advanced driver-assistance technology available. Key safety features include an anti-lock braking system (ABS), vehicle stability assist (VSA) with a smart traction control function, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a hill start assist (HSA), and a wide-view multi-angle rearview camera, among other features.

The 1.8-liter naturally aspirated fourcylinder engine still pushes out 140 hp and 172 Nm of torque

ENGINE No revisions have been made to the engine. The 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine still pushes out 140 hp and 172 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that emphasizes fuel economy over power. Unsurprisingly, the engine’s figures aren’t at all impressive, bearing in mind that the subcompact SUV is meant for small families that nip around towns, not for those moonlighting as street racers! Aside from the palpable engine and tire noise, passengers will be aware of smaller bumps on patchy surfaces, but we rarely experienced any disturbing body bounce along twisting, undulating roads.

VERDICT The Honda HR-V is a solid competitor in the subcompact SUV segment. It benefits from sporty styling, a somewhat premium interior and an adequately spacious cargo area. The only drawback is that the engine is underpowered compared to its rivals.

ince its debut in September 2015, Jaguar’s first SUV— the F-Pace—has been a big hit for the British luxury brand, allowing it to make a name for itself in a crowded market segment usually dominated by the Germans: Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW!

A whopping 550 hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine is hiding under the hood, making the F-Pace SVR the most powerful F-Pace vehicle to date—it is the same engine that powers other high-end JLR vehicles such as the F-Type and Range Rover Sport SVR.

Although the Jaguar F-Pace SVR has arrived a tad late to the party, late is better than never. In April 2018, the F-Pace received the go-faster, special treatment of JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division.

The F-Pace SVR, aka the magnificent beast, is really fast and offers something to get your blood pumping and your heart pounding! It aims at taking the game to a new level, forcing its rivals to do the same!

Jaguar and Land Rover designers worked their magic on the hot-rod SUV. The fresh SVR-branded aerodynamic package with revamped front and rear bumpers, lower side skirts, and a new rear spoiler, has been added to Jaguar’s first SUV, making the high-performance F-Pace more aggressive than ever. Other design highlights include the sculpted SVR hood that gives the magnificent beast a sporty flair, the larger fender vents on the sides to provide extra cooling for the larger brakes, the standard, trim-exclusive 21-inch wheels, the roof-mounted lip spoiler, and the quad exhaust tips—all make the F-Pace SVR a bit more appealing and help drop the SUV’s drag coefficient from 0.38 to a modest 0.37!

now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard INTERIOR

A glimpse inside the F-Pace SVR’s interior will definitely catch you off guard. It is a combination of premium materials, performance cues, and soft-padded surfaces, along with an array of technologies that completely wowed us away throughout. To start off, leather covers every surface in the spacious cabin, which is available in unique two-tone color options or one solid color—black. Other noticeable upgrades include the 14-way adjustable leather sports bucket front seats with SVR logos embossed into the headrests, and an SVR-branded steering wheel. Better yet, rear passengers will find the same comfortable, perforated, quilted seats as the front. Unlike the 2020 Jaguar XE that has dual infotainment touchscreens, the range-topping SVR gets the 10-inch InControl Touch Pro infotainment touchscreen system—now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. Other highlights include a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot that supports up to eight devices, and abundant USB ports. In terms of practicality, the F-Pace SVR retains the base model’s 650 liters of rear cargo room behind the second-row bench. On the safety front, the all-new F-Pace SVR offers a wide range of drivingassistance features including an adaptive cruise control and speed limiter, a surround-view camera, a lane-keep assist, an emergency braking system with pedestrian detection, and a blind-spot monitoring system, to name but a few.

Despite its low-profile tires and sporty chassis, the speedy SUV is a surprisingly smooth—and fast—ride on both city streets and highways

ENGINE Under the fresh sheet metal, the same supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine from the F-Type SVR and Range Rover Sport SVR has been carried over. The powerful engine pushes out 550 hp and 680 Nm of torque, allowing the hot-rod SUV to go from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 283 km/h. For a high-riding vehicle that weighs 1993 kg, the F-Pace SVR’s figures are eye-watering and mean it can move with lethal quickness. In other words, the performance level is not only on par with its high-performance SUV rivals, but also outperforms that of many other sports cars! Unlike the non-SVR variants of the F-Pace, the range-topping SVR version sports large-sized brakes, stiffer springs, optimized steering, and adaptive dynamics. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which transfers power to the four wheels. The permanent allwheel-drive system sends most of the torque to the rear wheels when needed, while giving the F-Pace SVR a rear-wheel bias under normal operating conditions. Despite its low-profile tires and sporty chassis, the speedy SUV is a surprisingly smooth—and fast—ride on both city streets and highways.

VERDICT Billed as “the fastest and most powerful F-Pace yet,” the F-Pace SVR is by all means a comfortable SUV capable of reaching breakneck speeds. With its hefty list of new go-fast goodies and thirsty engine, the F-Pace SVR is a perfect day-to-day companion that is equally at home on the racetracks!

t has been two decades since Kia decided to lift the veil on its midsize sedan—the Optima. Now in its fifth generation, the all-new 2021 Kia K5 is touted to be the South Korean brand’s most powerful midsize sedan, opening a new chapter for one of the most successful vehicles in its segment! Based on the N3 third-gen platform, which also underpins the latest Hyundai Sonata, the new Kia K5 features the brand’s new design language—borrowing some design cues from the Kia Stinger, while leveraging from a heavily updated interior, with a wide range of advanced safety and infotainment technologies, as well as all-new powertrain options.

102 QCOTY

A design collaboration between Kia’s studios in North America, Europe, and Korea, the all-new K5 is longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor, with an increased wheelbase, giving the midsize saloon an edge over its rivals, hence earning a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year’s (QCOTY) list.

exterior Style-wise, the current Kia design language naturally lends itself to another low-riding body shape. Penned from a clean sheet, the all-new Kia K5 adopts the cleaner lines of its marvelous-looking sibling—the Stinger—with the front end featuring a modernized version of Kia’s “tiger-nose” grille that extends into the headlights and hood.

On the safety front, the 2021 Kia K5 offers a host of driving assistance systems such as the Forward Collision-avoidance Assist, Blind-spot Collision-avoid Assist, Lane Following Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control, and Highway Driving Assist.

Fittingly, the premium midsize saloon comes with two engine options: 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter powertrains

ENGINE Fittingly, the premium midsize saloon comes with two engine options. The basic iteration is equipped with a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 150 hp and 192 Nm of torque. It’s a decent engine, though if you expect any sort of performance, you will feel somewhat let down. This engine allows the new K5 to go from zero to 100 km/h in an estimated 11.5 seconds. For those who want something more powerful, they may opt for the punchier 2.5-liter engine. This powertrain delivers 191 hp and 246 Nm of torque. The zero to 100 km/h sprint takes just 9.2 seconds with this engine, and the top speed is 210 km/h. Both engines are hooked up to a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters that can direct the power to the front wheels.

VERDICT It goes without saying that the Kia Optima has evolved dramatically with the arrival of the fifth-generation, K5 model. The modern design cues with fastback profile and the driver-focused interior, as well as the latest tech amenities and its powerful engine options, have granted the all-new 2021 K5 access to a wider audience and enabled it to compete against vehicles it couldn’t have before, even giving them a run for their money!

t goes without saying that traditional sedans and hatchbacks are losing ground to SUVs and crossovers. The latter have now conquered the market. Carmakers across the globe have decided to embrace these high-riding models, rolling out as many SUVs and crossovers as possible to get their slice of these lucrative segments. China’s Maxus is no exception. The sub-brand of the Shanghai Automotive Industrial Company (SAIC Motors) launched its first, full-size SUV, the Maxus D90, in fall 2017. The sevenseat SUV enjoyed great sales success thanks to its large proportions, rich interior features, and hi-tech, driver-focused technologies.

Debuted at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, the mid-size Maxus D60 is the Chinese brand’s second SUV. Features like its multiple seating layouts, attractive styling, semi-autonomous driving system, and the large 14-inch touchscreen make the D60 standout from the competition.

As far as the side profile goes, it is more dynamic and prominent than ever, thanks to the wide C-pillar, the large wheel designs ranging between 19 and 22 inches, and the unique roof rails. The sportier and more dynamic styling continues further back as the new midsize luxury SUV has slimmer LED taillights, additional chrome elements for the faux underguard, and dual exhaust tips. nveiled in late 2018, the all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan is the latest addition to the A-Class family. It’s billed as an entry-level sedan that offers real luxury at an affordable price. While the Stuttgart-based brand has recently rolled out a redesigned, second-generation CLA for 2020—very similar to the A-Class— the sedan version of the A-Class looks quite good and even has a unique rear design not shared with other siblings. Aside from the exterior design, the A-Class Sedan has a great interior build quality and boasts high-tech features, typically only available in the bigger and most expensive models, including the brand-new MBUX infotainment system, the alldigital instrument cluster, and even the optional Multibeam LED headlamps.

One can say that the front fascia design is based on the latest CLS and CLA. While the standard headlamps are certainly eye-catching and modern, clients can opt for the Multibeam LED headlamps—an advanced technology that allows quick adjustment of the headlights to suit the traffic situation. A feature that’s usually reserved for the more expensive and luxurious models. Among the other key exterior features are the black-accented grille, the aggressive hood, the more upright C-pillar, a panoramic glass roof, and the short three-box A-Class’ rear. Customers can opt for the A250 Sedan model, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 224 hp and 350 Nm of torque

ENGINE Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz A200 Sedan sports a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 163 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The four-cylinder engine allows the compact A200 Sedan to go from zero to 100 km/h in an estimated 8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 230 km/h. Customers can also opt for the A250 Sedan model, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 224 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This four-pot mill enables the A250 Sedan to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 250 km/h. Linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual shifting mode, both engines drive the compact sedan along just nicely. Still, if some clients want to cover ground more rapidly, the 2.0-liter turbocharged mill under the hood of the full-blown AMG A35 badged model is definitely the one to go for. The latter powertrain delivers 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Connecting to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission and variable AMG-spec 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, the AMG A35 will hit 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h, putting this hot variant in a different performance league compared to the A200 and A250 models.

VERDICT It is safe to say that the Stuttgart-based brand has come up with two similar front-wheel-drive biased sedans—the CLA and A-Class Sedan. Selecting the A-Class Sedan means picking the cheaper option, while getting a slightly more spacious interior. In other words, the A-Class Sedan is a clear winner here, and is likely to outshine its other German rivals as well.

This popular small crossover is now leveraging from a new face, along with new under-bonnet gear and equipment. Even though there are no big changes in the cabin—the overall design, instruments, and even controls are all familiar—the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a level up from its predecessor. Other key interior highlights include a more convenient set of buttons, black leather upholstery, a pair of USB ports, height-adjustable seats with fourway electric adjustment on the driver’s side, Bluetooth connectivity, and nine-speaker Rockford audio system, to name but a few. Mated to a CVT transmission that sends power to the front wheels, the four-pot unit performs everyday duties quite well

ENGINE Fittingly, there is only one engine option: a powerful 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, delivering 147 hp and 197 Nm of torque. Mated to a CVT transmission that sends power to the front wheels, the four-pot unit performs everyday duties quite well. However, the absence of a turbocharger is somewhat disappointing—some of ASX’s rivals feature turbocharged engines including Mazda CX-3, Seat Ateca, and Hyundai Kona. Interestingly enough, the ASX’s powertrain is still able to get the job done, at least in ordinary driving conditions! Speaking of handling, the steering is gentle, although it feels disconnected to the wheels. But the front McPherson struts and the multi-link rear suspensions do a decent job of ironing out all the road imperfections with ease.

VERDICT Mitsubishi’s never-say-die crossover now has more features and characteristics to brag about. Known for its rugged, conservative style, and ferocious offroad capabilities, the Pajero is undoubtedly one of the most popular off-road SUVs currently available on the market.

However, that isn’t exactly what today’s buyers are looking for; they need a vehicle for the whole family, with gentle onroad manners and crossover-style. Mitsubishi’s answer is the Montero Sport. The L200-based Montero Sport in its third generation has been around since 2015, so the Japanese carmaker has determined that the time is right for a proper facelift. The 2020 Montero Sport has been given a bold design, new safety tech sourced from the pickup L200, and some modern updates inside.

The midsize SUV has received a mid-cycle refresh, which brings bold stylistic updates and the new corporate design dubbed “Dynamic Shield”

Clearly influenced by its facelifted L200 pickup sibling, the 2020 Montero Sport adopts a similar front-end design, identical headlights, and similar chrome-accented grille, while the front bumper looks slightly less rugged than the L200’s. In a nutshell, the midsize SUV has received a midcycle refresh, which brings bold stylistic updates and the new corporate design dubbed “Dynamic Shield”—already seen on the smaller Eclipse Cross. Closer inspection reveals a handful of subtle styling changes, including the revamped rear bumper, new alloy wheels, a sporty roof spoiler, and side steps, to name but a few. However, the rest of Montero’s bodywork doesn’t seem to feature significant changes! Dimensionally speaking, the facelifted Montero Sport is 4785 mm long, 1815 mm wide, and 1805 mm tall, with a 2800 mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance is 218 mm—perfect on rocky paths.

The cockpit has become a better place to sit, thanks to the refreshed center console, a new multi-information color display in the instrument panel, and a new leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters

INTERIOR Mitsubishi’s efforts to give the new Montero Sport a more premium feel are not limited to the exterior, as big changes have occurred elsewhere in the cabin. The cockpit has become a better place to sit, thanks to the refreshed center console, a new multi-information color display in the instrument panel, a new leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen for controlling the audio system. Depending on the trim level, the 2020 Montero Sport’s key interior features include dual-zone climate control with rear vents, rearview camera, pushbutton start, rear entertainment system, electrically adjustable front seats, and leather or high-quality fabric upholstery on the seats, keyless entry, a 6-speaker audio system, and a floor console, among other features. In terms of practicality, the facelifted Montero Sport offers seating for up to seven passengers. Although the third-row seats are primarily designed for children, they are suitable for adults on shorter journeys. On the safety front, the 2020 Montero Sport offers a wide range of driving assistance features, such as an anti-lock braking system (ABS), forward collision mitigation system (FCM), blind-spot warning (BSW), cruise control, hill descent control (HDC), Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation (UMM), and Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC).

The updated Montero Sport still carries the 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated V6 petrol engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission

ENGINE From a mechanical standpoint, nothing has changed. The updated Montero Sport still carries the 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated V6 petrol engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The latter delivers 219 hp and 285 Nm of torque. It is a good engine, but if you’re expecting high-level performance, you will definitely feel let down, as the zero to 100 km/h sprint takes around 12 seconds! Mitsubishi also offers another engine for the rugged SUV: a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine mated to either a 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox. The two drivetrains are available in both rear and four-wheel-drive versions.

VERDICT Though the new Montero Sport is not a full-blown off-roader, it’s still a modern, family SUV with some off-road capability—especially considering its Super Select II all-wheel-drive system that now offers a new off-road mode and a newly designed switch. The latter allows the midsize SUV to tackle different types of unpaved road. The exterior and interior updates combine to make the Montero more upscale and appealing than ever.

Inside, drivers will find a new dashboard with dual displays on the new center console - compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto INTERIOR Step inside Nissan’s body-on-frame behemoth, and you will be greeted by softer-padded surfaces everywhere, bearing in mind that the new refinements are notably distinguishable and a massive deviation from the style of its predecessor. Along with these changes, drivers will find a new dashboard with dual displays on the new center console—compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The upper, high-resolution 8-inch screen features a multitouch gesture function, while the lower 7-inch screen controls the settings, music, and phonebook. Among other key interior features are a hand-stitched steering wheel, brand-new diamond-stitch quilted leather seats with added padding, a built-in cooler box with a double-hinged design, tri-zone climate control, and a 13-speaker Bose premium audio system. The family-friendly SUV also gets improved cooling and airflow distribution systems to boost cabin cooling in the GCC’s hot climates. The seats are very comfortable, and there’s plenty of space for seven adults in the SUV’s three rows. Boot space is very generous (1413 liters behind the third row), and you can automatically fold the third-row seats down or raise them up. On the safety front, the family-sized SUV gains a bunch of new driverassistance systems, such as the Intelligent Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning. Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control, Around View Monitor, and Intelligent Rear-View Monitor are also available.

The 2020 Nissan Patrol still comes with a standard 4.0-liter V6 engine, delivering 275 hp and 394 Nm of torque. Clients can also opt for the larger 5.6-liter V8 engine, chugging out 400 hp and 560 Nm of torque

ENGINE Under the bulging hood, no revisions have been made to the engines of the 2020 Nissan Patrol. Known as the Y62 Series, the latest iteration of the sixth-generation Nissan Patrol still comes with a standard 4.0-liter V6 engine, delivering 275 hp and 394 Nm of torque. Although the V6 mill is a decent engine, if you expect any sort of performance, you might feel slightly let down, bearing in mind the heavy weight of the vehicle (around 2,700 kg). Clients in Qatar can opt for the larger 5.6-liter V8 engine, chugging out 400 hp and 560 Nm of torque. Both engine units are hooked to a seven-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the four wheels. Suspension-wise, the V8-powered models now use Nissan’s Hydraulic Body Motion Control (HBMC) adaptive suspension system to improve both handling and ride comfort on all terrains.

VERDICT For clients looking for a boxy SUV that looks bulky and macho and features a choice of V6 or V8 powertrains, the 2020 Nissan Patrol is the perfect option! With a sophisticated yet modern look, a more upscale interior, and superb off-road capabilities, the facelifted Patrol is a serious contender in the full-size SUV segment, hence deserves a spot on our 2020 Qatar Car of the Year (QCOTY) list.
