CONSTRUCTION OF ATMOSPHERE

Master of Architecture-DIA, Hochschule Anhalt Dessau, Germany Professor: Peter Apel

Introduction to the Project Enfilade Art Gallery

An atmosphere could be described as the entirety of all sensual pro- perties of a room or a site, in which the quality and character of design decisions are revealed. How can this atmosphere be developed or rather constructed with the means of architecture? What kind of atmosphere seems appropriate and how is it transmitted? Especially in the presentation of art, the relation between artwork and viewer is strongly influenced by the situation, the architectural space and its atmosphere. We explored different approaches to the production of spaces for art and set up a programme for an art gallery in an inner-city location in Munich, the area of the Pinakotheken. We examined the significance of the exhibition of artworks in a social, urban and programmatic context to design our own atmospheric gallery space. Trust your eyes: By mapping our perception of places and spaces, we worked out design parameters. Spatial ideas are to be specified by means of large-scale physical models.

MUNICH ART GALLERY

We had some struggles to find our concept starting from what to take and what to develop of course and started to discover the site and the first thing I discovered is that the specific urban relation consists of for sure architecture and public green areas which in plan looks like checkerboard. What I meant is the footprint of building is almost the same size as greening at least in our site and there is almost endless arrangement of black and white areas. Also what we discovered while walking is that the walk paths are always in between the solid and void and this leads to these perspective views on site where we can see again the proportion of green as gray and buildings as black. This repetitive arrangement also can be found inside. We visited Alte Pinakothek which has enfilade arrangement of gallery spaces. Enfilade means rooms, juxtapositioned with each other in single row. This brings us to very close to the photo collection of Lother Schirmer which has similarity with very small changes. So I thought by combining these 2 principles one is endless feeling found on site and other is similarity of gallery spaces could be integrated in my concept. How? By simply ignoring the angles both inside and outside of the building is the best solution for creating endless feeling. Imagine a room with rounded corners that does not cast shadow will have impression of homogenous light on the wall around. Another thing I found interesting in Alte Pinakothek and some other museums or galleries is that the color of the rooms differe from one another in specific reason. That brought me to another idea that how to translate this into my gallery spaces and I thought it could be done with different light conditions.

CREATIVE AND PRODUCTIVE CITY

Master of Architecture-DIA, Hochschule Anhalt Dessau, Germany Professor: Christoph Kohl

Introduction to the Project Creative and Productive City

We are experiencing a new ‚Gründerzeit‘, a founding period based on start-ups and digital pursuit. The work environment is becoming ever cleaner and more noise-free; and the living environment - in order to minimise private transport - can, wants to and must be ever closer to where we work. Following a century of practised segregation, intensely intermixed urban districts will soon be possible once more - the keywords will be: compact, mixed and collective. This project intents to strengthen the existing urban realm by proposing healthy life and urban quality on site. Pleasant living space is created by maximizing natural elements and minimizing problems like noise and traffic. The treatment of the context together with the project site aims to revitalize the productive city and convert the old industrial areas into new urban form. Brick buildings are conserved as the witness of the site history. Modern living and working modes generate mixture of functions and flexibility of the use of space. The generous space in the south part and the industrial spirit of the site can stimulate the contemporary and sustainable ideas like co-working ideas-sharing business, resource-sharing fields. The flexible layout of the working space could adapt to the growth of the small start-up business.

HEALTH CARE CENTER

Izmir, Turkey Introduction to the Project ““Izmir is one of the biggest cities in Turkey with harbour industry. The fact that the there is not enough health care hospitals in Izmir the main concept of the project is to design for people who need assistance depending on the health condition. There are some people who need 100 percent assisntance to live but some may require 50 percent and so on. Concept is to divide those in 3 parts /0,50, 100percent assistance category/ and connect them by temporary hospital area so that people who live there feel no isolation from society. Project brings 2 courtyards for view and social activities.

GER PAVILION

Somewhere in Mongolia Introduction to the Project Ger Pavilion

The project is inspired by “Mongolia Yurt” which is used by many nomadics throughout year in Mongolia. The structure is flexible and modular so that each season nomadic family can de-assemble and re-assemble in desired location each season. The pavilion is designed in parametric way. The openings are for both for nomadics and livestock for temporary stay as shelter. The structure is 5m high so it can be used in different occassions like gathering of herdsmen or wedding and will fuction as temporary shelter during the “Naadam Festival”. The structure can be covered with linen same as ger so it can create shade from sun but still get daylight from the top. In addition, wind can circulate easily through openings.
