añada por las indómitas aguas del Océano Atlántico y el Mar Cantábrico, los 30000 km cuadrados de Galicia representan las tierras más antiguas de toda la Península Ibérica. Un paisaje donde el verde de sus montañas y valles interiores se funde en grandiosa armonía con el azul del mar en sus espectaculares y recortadas rías, dibujando un recorrido de gran belleza entre Asturias y Portugal. Dentro de este marco singular donde la naturaleza despliega todas sus virtudes, encontramos un sin fin de entornos únicos, salpicados de forma continua por numerosas representaciones de la cultura e historia de esta región. Sus milenarios castros, cascos históricos, catedrales con variedad de estilos y formas, hermosos pueblos donde el tiempo parece haberse detenido, etc., son tan sólo una pequeña muestra de la de la personalidad artística y cultural de Galicia.

Entornos naturales como el Monte Aloia, monumentos como los impresionantes monasterios de Oseira y Samos, pueblos pintorescos como Muros o cascos históricos como el de Tui; las magníficas playas casi vírgenes en la Costa da Morte o en la península del Morrazo , el castro de Viladonga en Lugo como resto arqueológico o las impresionantes vistas panorámicas desde cualquiera de los miradores repartidos por las Rías Baixas, son sólo un ejemplo de las múltiples posibilidades que podíamos haber elegido para la elaboración de estos contenidos. Recomendamos por ello usar este libro como si se tratase de una pequeña introducción, de un punto de partida para conocer y disfrutar de los innumerables atractivos de esta “nosa terra galega”.
Este libro pretende acercar parte de esta riqueza al lector, por medio de fichas de contenido principalmente gráfico y visual, que ayuden al conocimiento de estos lugares. Es importante

ashed by the boundless waters of the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea, the 30,000 sq kilometres of Galicia constitute the oldest lands on all of the Iberian peninsular. A land where the green of inland mountains and forests melts in glorious harmony into the blue of the sea at her jagged and spectacular rías, creating a stretch of great beauty between Asturias and Portugal. Within this singular landscape where nature is laid out in all her glory, lies an unending role of unique natural settings, dotted at every turn with numerous examples of the region’s history and culture. Ancient settlements, historic centres, cathedrals of varying forms and styles, beautiful towns and villages where time appears to have stood still; these are all just a small sample of Galicia’s artistic and cultural character. This book was written with the intention of conveying some of the bounty of this land to the reader through words and images. It must be said that it was no easy task to choose between the many treasures deserving of inclusion in each chapter. Monuments such as the visually stunning monasteries of Oseira and Samos, archaeological remains like Viladonga hill fort in Lugo, picturesque towns such as Muros and historic town centres like Tui. From the natural world: Monte Aloia, the magnificent, almost virgin beaches of the Costa Da Morte or the Morrazo peninsula, the breathtaking views from any one of the vantage points scattered throughout the Rías Baixas; these are just a sample of what we could have chosen for inclusion in this book. With this in mind, we recommend that the reader use this book as an introduction to the places detailed within it. A starting point for the discovery and appreciation of the innumerable attractions of this “nosa terra galega”.

Cascos históricos A menudo de impronta romana o medieval, los cascos históricos gallegos conservan numerosos ejemplos de una arquitectura popular local. Entre “cruceiros” y galerías, se descubre el rico patrimonio de una cultura que supo conciliar con armonía influencias y tradición.
Marked throughout history by Roman or medieval influence, the historic centres of Galicia’s towns and cities retain numerous examples of local folk architecture. From ‘cruceiros’ (stone crosses) to glazed balconies, the rich heritage of a culture able to effortlessly reconcile tradition with external influences awaits discovery.

Atravesando los restos de las viejas murallas del siglo XV por una de las ‘Puertas del Mar’, podemos recorrer el casco histórico de A Coruña y visitar lugares de gran interés: las iglesias de Santiago y Santa María del Campo, distintos conventos y plazas, así como los encantadores jardines de San Carlos con sus hermosas vistas al puerto. Es recomendable también conocer la rica historia de la ciudad en el museo de su heroína más ilustre, María Pita, símbolo de la defensa de A Coruña en 1589 contra la Armada Inglesa dirigida por el pirata Francis Drake. El paseo a través de la zona vieja termina con la visita al castillo de San Antón antigua fortaleza y prisión y actual sede del museo arqueológico.
Entering the historic centre of A Coruña through one of the ‘gates of the sea’ in the remains of the city wall begins a journey around the multitude of interesting sites on offer: the churches of Santiago and Santa Maria del Campo and the charming gardens of the San Carlos with their beautiful views of the port. The city’s wealth of history can also be experienced at the museum of the city’s most illustrious heroine María Pita, symbol of the defense of A Coruña in 1589 against the English fleet led by Francis Drake.

A circuit of the old quarter of the city concludes with a visit to the castle of San Antón, ancient fortress and current site of the archaeological museum.

Distintas puertas antiguas dan acceso al corazón de la ciudad de Betanzos, y descubren un conjunto histórico-artístico fuertemente marcado por la arquitectura medieval, representada en casas con blasones y monumentos religiosos entre los cuales la iglesia de Santa María de Azogue y la de Santiago constituyen uno de los ejemplos mas importantes del gótico gallego. Bañada por el río Mandeo y su afluente el Mendo, esta antigua capital y provincia del Reino de Galicia tuvo, durante la Edad Media, un floreciente puerto, que ayudó al desarrollo de la ciudad. Hoy en día conserva una rica tradición histórica y popular, a través de su patrimonio artístico y de sus numerosas fiestas tradicionales, como las de San Roque con su famoso globo y la romería fluvial de Os Caneiros. Ancient gates give access to the heart of Betanzos, revealing a grouping of historic-artistic buildings with a markedly Medieval architectural style such as houses featuring emblazoned balconies and religious buildings, among which the churches of Santa Maria de Azogue and Santiago constitute some of the most important examples of the Gothic style in Galicia.

Standing on the banks of the Mandeo river and it’s tributary the Mendo, this ancient province and capital of the Kingdom of Galicia developed thanks to a flourishing port here during the Middle Ages. Today a wealth of historical and folk traditions are preserved through the city’s artistic heritage and many traditional festivals such as that of San Roque with it’s famous hot-air balloon and river trip to Os Caneiros.

Fundada en el año 14 a. C, Lugo conoció un largo desarrollo desde la época romana que la dotó de su espectacular muralla y la convirtió en una de las tres capitales administrativas de Gallaecia, la provincia romana que ocupaba el noroeste peninsular. El interior de las murallas constituye el epicentro de la ciudad donde se encuentra su hermosa catedral, verdadera joya de su casco histórico. De factura románica, el edificio empezó a construirse en el siglo XII, y se le añadieron durante los decenios siguientes elementos góticos, barrocos y neoclásicos. Representa un inmejorable punto de partida para descubrir en las distintas plazas y callejuelas del centro la animada movida nocturna de Lugo. Founded in the year 14 B.C, Lugo has continued to develop since the Roman era that gave it it’s spectacular wall and during which it became one of the three administrative capitals of Gallaecia, the Roman province which occupied the north-west peninsular. Inside the wall lies the epicentre of the city where the beautiful cathedral, jewel of the city’s historic center, is to be found. This Romanesque cathedral was begun in the 12th century with gothic, baroque and neoclassical elements being added over the centuries. Today it makes an unbeatable starting point for an exploration of the lively nightlife of the squares and side streets in the centre. 20

Declarada Monumento Nacional en 1902, la catedral del siglo XIII es uno de los grandes atractivos turísticos de Mondoñedo. Ciudad del agua y del oro, Ourense posee uno de los cascos históricos más interesantes de Galicia. Empezando su recorrido desde As Burgas, sus famosas fuentes de aguas termales, el turista descubrirá estrechas callejuelas y plazas con un carisma único, así como numerosas iglesias y la majestuosa catedral de San Martín del siglo XII. Declarado conjunto histórico-artístico desde 1951, el casco histórico de Pontevedra cuenta con numerosos monumentos y lugares de gran interés, entre los que destacan la emblemática Basílica de Santa María la Mayor, la iglesia de San Francisco, el museo provincial o la famosa “Peregrina”, iglesia tardo barroca y referencia en el camino portugués. La ciudad, que según el mito fue fundada por Teucro, personaje de la guerra de Troya posee un centro repleto de estrechas calles y animadas plazas, rodeadas de pazos y casas blasonadas, soportales, galerías, fuentes y un gran número de terrazas donde disfrutar la rica gastronomía local.
A Historic-Artistic Site since 1951, the old quarter of Pontevedra has numerous monuments and sites of special interest. Worthy of mention among these are the emblematic Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor, the church of San Fransisco, the regional museum and the famous ‘Peregrina’ a late baroque church and reference point on the Camino Portuguese. Plaza de la Ferrería, la más emblemática de la ciudad, flanqueada por la Iglesia de San Francisco y el edificio de hacienda, del año 1800. Plaza de Teucro, uno de los puntos de partida para disfrutar de la animada movida nocturna de la ciudad. The Plaza de Teucro makes a good starting point for a discovery of the city’s lively night-life.
Plaza de Méndez Nuñez en honor al famoso contraalmirante que vivió en una de sus casas. A finales del siglo XIX se convirtió en un importante lugar de encuentro de intelectuales y escritores como Valle Inclán. The Plaza de Méndez Núñez; named in honour of the famous Rear Admiral who lived in one of the houses here. Toward the end of the 19th century it became an important meeting place for intellectuals and writers such as Valle Inclán.

El parque del Xurés, con una superficie de más de 20000 hectáreas, se extiende al sur de Galicia y continúa en Portugal con el parque nacional Peneda- Gerês. El perfil inconfundible de su sierra, con cumbres superiores a 1500 metros de altura, sus valles de origen glaciar y la multitud de cursos fluviales que lo atraviesan, crean un ecosistema privilegiado en cuya fauna destacan el lobo, jabalí, corzo, águila real, etc., En la actualidad existen programas de recuperación de algunas especies amenazadas, como son la cabra montesa y el Pony gallego o Garrano, que disfruta en este entorno de un estado de semi-libertad. Además de su riqueza natural, en la zona podemos disfrutar de multitud de restos romanos pertenecientes a la Vía Nova, y de importantes instalaciones termales como el balneario de Río Caldo. Covering an area of over 20,000 hectares, Xurés extends from the south of Galicia into Portugal where it continues as the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The unmistakable silhouette of the sierra, with peaks of over 1500 meters, the glacial valleys and numerous watercourses which crisscross the park create a rich ecosystem whose star fauna includes wolves, wild boar, roe deer, royal eagles and more. Conservation programmes are currently in place to aid the recovery of certain threatened species such as the mountain goat and the native Galician and Garrano breeds of pony which roam semi-wild through the landscape.

Situado al suroeste de la provincia de Lugo, este entorno montañoso (considerado por algunos geólogos como las tierras más antiguas de la Península Ibérica) constituye la zona de Galicia con mayor diversidad florística además de contener la mayor concentración de bosque autóctono de la región. Estos bosques de roble, haya, tejos, abedules y acebos, son denominados “devesas” siendo la de Rogueira una de las más importantes por su extensión y riqueza natural. Los bosques de castaños, son también una parte fundamental de este ecosistema y de la economía de sus pobladores, ya que constituyó durante mucho tiempo la base de su alimentación antes de la llegada de la patata. Varios itinerarios de senderismo están organizados a partir del aula de la naturaleza situada en Moreda, paseos que permiten contemplar la fauna y flora local, salpicada por riachuelos y cascadas que nacen a lo largo del camino. Situated in the south-east, this mountainous region (considered by some geologists to be the oldest lands on the Iberian peninsular) boasts the greatest diversity of flora and highest concentration of indigenous forest in Galicia. Of these oak, beech, yew, silver birch and holly forests known as ‘devesas’, Rogueira is one of the most important owing to it’s size and wealth of flora. Chestnut forests are also a fundamental part of the ecosystem and local economy having formed, for many years, the base of the local diet before the arrival of the potato.

Declarado Parque Nacional en 2002, As Illas Atlánticas están formadas por cuatro archipiélagos: Cíes, Ons, Sálvora y Cortegada, situados todos ellos en las Rías Baixas. Sus características únicas y su situación privilegiada han atraído a sus costas numerosos cormoranes y otras aves marinas, siendo las gaviotas las más numerosas con más de 15000 parejas. El arao común es otra de las especies de las que podemos disfrutar desde los distintos observatorios de las islas. Pinos y eucaliptos cubren gran parte de las Cíes, y en menor presencia la isla de Ons, mientras en Cortegada nos encontramos con uno de los mayores bosques de laureles de Europa. Además, el carácter atlántico confiera a las islas una riqueza marina única, en cuyos fondos se pueden encontrar más de 200 especies de algas. Situated in the Rías Baixas and declared a national park in 2002, the Illas Atlánticas are formed by the four archipelagos of Cíes, Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada. Their unique characteristics and fortuitous position attract numerous cormorants and other marine birds to their coasts. Seagulls are the most numerous with over 15,000 pairs while the common guillemot is another species which can be spied from the various observatories on the islands.

Declarado parque natural en 1997, O Invernadeiro constituye una de las áreas de montaña más características de Galicia. Declared a nature reserve in 1997, O Invernadeiro is one of Galicia’s most characteristic mountainous regions. It’s rounded peaks are covered with heather and pasture, whilst in the lower valleys stand important oak, chestnut and holly forests. The park is a fascinating and unique ecosystem which marks the transition from the typical Mediterranean to Euro-Siberian distribution of plants and animals. Five guided trekking routes beginning from the park’s Interpretative Centre allow visitors to discover the natural beauty and features of the area and, with luck, observe it’s wealth of fauna: roe and fallow deer, wild boar, wolves, royal eagles, and mountain goats among others. 66

Dominando todo el territorio circundante, la fortaleza de Monterrei formaba un enclave estratégico en la frontera con Portugal durante la Edad Media. Dominating the surrounding area, the fortress of Monterrei once formed part of a strategic enclave on the Portuguese border during the Middle Ages. Apart from it’s function as a military stronghold, the castle was the centre of an active cultural life, with the installation in 1494 of the first printing press in Galicia, which was used to printed the Monterrei Missal, an early printed text conserved today in Ourense cathedral. Surrounded by a triple walled enclosure, construction dates from the 12th century, and the castle has adopted, over time, elements of various styles and today constitutes a beautiful testament to the past. 72

Los castillos de San Felipe y de La Palma están situados frente a frente, bordeando y protegiendo la ría de Ferrol. Construidas en el siglo XVI, estas fortalezas ubicadas estratégicamente fueron perfectamente diseñadas para proteger la entrada de la ría contra los ataques ingleses y franceses. Esta protección del importante puerto militar de Ferrol estaba constituida antiguamente por tres defensas, quedando en la actualidad del castillo de San Martín únicamente sus ruinas. Entre La Palma y San Felipe se tendía una cadena para evitar la entrada a los barcos enemigos. Hoy en día, el castillo de San Felipe es el único que se puede visitar y en sus instalaciones se recrea cada Agosto la victoria española contra los ingleses en la batalla de Brión de 1800. The castles of San Felipe and Palma stand face to face, bordering and protecting the Ferrol ría. These fortresses, constructed in the 16th century, were perfectly designed and strategically placed to protect the mouth of the ría from attack by the English and French. This protection for the important military port of Ferrol consisted, in ancient times, of three defenses, though today all that remains of the castle of San Martin are it’s ruins. Between La Palma and San Felipe a chain was stretched across the ría as a means of preventing enemy ships from entering.

Joya del arte románico y destino final de los numerosos peregrinos que recorren el famoso camino, la catedral de Santiago fue la primera de Galicia y constituye hoy en día el monumento más visitado de la comunidad y Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Sus obras empezaron en el año 1075, y fue consagrada en 1211. La obra culmina en tiempos del Arzobispo Gelmírez (siglo XII). En el Siglo XVIII será reformada la antigua fachada diseñada por el Maestro Mateo, para dar paso a la actual barroca del Obradoiro, del arquitecto Fernando de Casas Novoa. En el interior, podemos recorrer el espacio en forma de cruz latina admirando las impresionantes proporciones del edificio, que aloja varios retablos y otros elementos religiosos de gran interés, como el gran Botafumeiro o el magnifico altar mayor, bajo el cual están depositados los restos del Santo. Considerada ejemplo único y excepcional de la fortificaciones militares romanas, la muralla de Lugo fue incorporada por la UNESCO, en el año 2000, a la lista de los monumentos declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad. De gran valor arqueológico y arquitectónico-militar, esta fortificación, de unos 1700 años de antigüedad, es el monumento más famoso de la Galicia romana, que tuvo como primera función defender la ciudad ante el peligro de las invasiones bárbaras. El obligado paseo peatonal que discurre sobre la muralla permitirá al visitante descubrir sus gitanescas dimensiones: tiene un perímetro de 2117 metros, un espesor medio de 4,20 metros y una altura que osilla entre los 8 y los 12 metros; en su recorrido encontramos 85 torres o cubos monumentales, y 10 puertas desde las cuales se pude entrar al corazón de la antigua ciudad romana. Considered ‘a unique and exceptional example of Roman military fortifications’, Lugo’s city wall was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000. Of great archaeological and military architectural value, this ancient fortress (some 1700 years old) whose primary function was the defense of the city against barbarian invasion, is now the most visited historical monument in Galicia. The circuit around the top of the wall is a must and allows visitors to fully appreciate it’s colossal measurements: the perimeter measures 2117 meters with an average thickness of 4.20 meters and a height varying between 8 and 12 meters. Atravesando el río Miño a la altura de la ciudad de Ourense, se alza el colosal “Ponte Vella” cuya construcción se remonta a tiempos del emperador Augusto (siglo I), aunque en la actualidad tan sólo se conserva de esta época su parte inferior. Las sucesivas reconstrucciones y reformas (la última en el siglo XVII) le han dado su aspecto actual, conservando siete de los 11 arcos originales y una longitud total de 370 metros. Durante varios siglos fue la única vía de tránsito entre ambas orillas. En la actualidad compite en esta función con otras construcciones, siendo el Puente del Milenio la más reciente. Estas dos vías fascinan por la majestuosidad del conjunto: mezcla armoniosa de tradición y modernidad, donde miles de ourensanos y otros turistas pasean, cada día, para cruzar de un lado al otro de la ciudad. The colossal Ponte Vella bridge crosses the Miño river at the city of Ourense. A total of 370 meters long, construction dates back to the 1st century and the time of Emperor Augusto, though only the lower part of the original structure has survived to the present day. Successive modifications (the last in the 17th century) have given the bridge it’s modern day appearance, with seven of the original eleven arches preserved.

Flanqueada en su extremo norte por la impresionante mole de granito rosa formada por el Monte Pindo, conocido también como el “Olimpo de los Celtas” y fuente inagotable de supersticiones y leyendas, la playa de Carnota es con sus 7 kilómetros de longitud el arenal más largo de Galicia y sin duda uno de los más bellos. Also known as the ‘Olimpia of the Celts’ and an inexhaustible source of superstition and legend, Carnota beach is, at 7 kilometers, the longest stretch of sand in Galicia and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, flanked at it’s northernmost end by the striking pink granite mass of Monte Pindo. Like the nearby Caldebarcos saltwater marshes, the mouth of the Largareiros river (Boca do Rio), and the special characteristics of the beach, completely unspoilt by development, give the landscape an almost virgin appearance with white sands and crystal waters.

Situada en el archipiélago de las Cíes, la playa de Rodas, la más grande y famosa del Parque Nacional, es la primera que ven los visitantes cuando desembarcan. En su parte posterior, encontramos una laguna de agua salada que acoge un verdadero acuario a cielo abierto, y en los alrededores del cual se han formado importantes colonias de aves marinas. The first to be seen by visitors disembarking in the Cíes archipelago, Rodas beach is the largest and most famous in the national park. The fineness of the white sand and the transparency of the waters give it the appearance of a Caribbean beach and it has been classified by some international newspapers as “the most beautiful in the world”. A dip in the water, however, tells another story; the waters of the Atlantic are pretty cold although the beauty of the surroundings is enough to make you forget the temperature.

The sands of Vilarrube, some 1650 meters long, are set in a beautiful landscape surrounded by low eucalyptus hills which shelter the beach protecting it from the sea’s swell and creating excellent swimming conditions. The small fishing town of Combarro comprises one of the most typical examples of folk architecture in Galicia. Despite it’s isolated position in the high Lucense mountains, the small town of O Cebreiro receives a steady stream of visitors; both tourists attracted by the beauty of this picturesque little town, and the numerous pilgrims who pass through on the Camino Frances. The centre of the town is dotted with the traditional Galician thatched houses known as ‘pallozas’, holiday cottages and pilgrim lodgings constructed in a pleasing combination of stone and slate. Escondido en la inmensidad montañosa de Os Ancares, la antigua aldea prerromana de Piornedo constituye un verdadero museo a cielo abierto de pallozas, palleiros y hórreos. Adoptando unas formas ovaladas o circulares, construidas con materiales como la pizarra o el granito y cubiertas por un techo de paja, las pallozas tenían función de vivienda, pero también de granero y establo, donde convivían hombres y animales. Algunas de ellas, habitadas hasta los años 70, permiten su visita y la observación de su estructura interna, así como su mobiliario y numerosos útiles domésticos que nos enseñan lo que era la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes.
Hidden in the vastness of the Ancares mountains, the ancient pre-Roman village of Piornedo is a veritable open-air museum of pallozas and horreos (traditional raised stone granaries). Oval or circular in form and constructed from slate or granite, pallozas were used as dwellings, granaries and stables where man and animal lived under the same roof. It is possible to visit some of these dwellings, still inhabited as recently as the 1970s, where observation of the internal structures, furniture and domestic implements reveals much about the daily life of the inhabitants.

A mitad de camino entre tierra y mar, San Andrés de Teixido es un centro de peregrinación rico en leyendas y tradiciones. En el corazón de este pintoresco pueblo se alza la iglesia dedicada a San Andrés, la cual acogería la reliquia de un hueso del Santo. Según las creencias populares, su cuerpo habría sido depositado al pie del monte después de un largo viaje en barca, que al llegar a la costa se convirtió en una roca. Destino obligado de cada peregrino, ya que a “San Andrés de Teixido vaí de morto o que non foi de vivo”; la leyenda cuenta que las almas de los que no viajaron a San Andrés estando vivos se reencarnan bajo forma de lagarto, serpiente o cualquier otro reptil y tienen que arrastrarse hasta el santuario. Sitting precipitously above the sea, San Andrés De Teixido is a pilgrimage centre rich in tradition and legend. At the heart of this picturesque little town stands the church of San Andres built to house a relic of the saint’s bone. According to popular belief, the body was transported by sea to the foot of the cliffs and the boat bearing is said to have turned to into a rock upon reaching the shore.

Legend tells that the soul of any who does not travel to San Andrés whilst alive will have to crawl to the sanctuary instead, reincarnated in the form of a lizard, snake or other reptile.

Situado sobre una pequeña península rocosa, el Castro de Baroña se impone como ejemplo emblemático de castro de tipo marítimo de la edad del Hierro. Aprovechando un sistema de protección privilegiado, sus murallas defensivas colocadas en el istmo prevenían los asaltos terrestres y un gran acantilado rocoso constituía una gran defensa natural ante posibles ataques marítimos. El castro fue construido en un lugar no sólo estratégico, sino también de incomparable belleza, rodeado de hermosas playas y montañas. Una vez dentro del recinto, se pueden observar una treintena de estructuras arquitectónicas de forma circular y ovalada, que tenían función de viviendas o de espacio para el desarrollo de actividades artesanales. Situated in on a small, rugged peninsular, the fortified settlement of Baroña is a typical example of an Iron Age coastal ‘castro’ or fortified hill settlement. Taking full advantage of the protection afforded by it’s position, the defensive ramparts across the isthmus prevented attacks on land whilst a large, rocky cliff constituted an excellent sea defense. The village was constructed not only in a strategic location but also one of incomparable natural beauty, surrounded by beautiful beaches and mountains. Within the walls of the enclosure are some thirty circular or oval structures which served as dwellings or craft workshops.. 162

El castro de San Cibrán de Las, constituye uno de los de mayor superficie en Galicia, habitado según recientes estudios desde el siglo I a.C. hasta el IV d.C. De gran influencia romana, también se conoce bajo su nombre original de Lansbricae gracias al descubrimiento en sus excavaciones de un ara dedicada a Bandua Lansbricae. El castro se organiza en dos elipses concéntricas, protegidas por murallas que en alguno de sus flancos llegan a ser triples. En la actualidad se está construyendo en las inmediaciones del yacimiento un amplio centro de interpretación de la cultura castrense. Los restos encontrados hasta ahora, especialmente relacionados con la minería, textiles y cerámica así como monedas de los siglos I a IV se encuentran depositados en el Museo Arqueológico de Ourense. The fortified settlement of San Cibran de Las is one of the largest in Galicia by area and was, according to recent studies, inhabited between the 1st century B.C and the 4th century A.D. Of great influence in Roman times, it is also known by it’s original name owing to the discovery in the excavations of an altar dedicated to Bandua Lansbricae and is arranged in two concentric ellipses protected by up to three walls at certain points.

A military history interpretive centre is under construction close to the site and remains such as mining artifacts, textiles, ceramics and coins dating from the 1st to 4th centuries are currently in store in the Museo Arqueológico in Ourense.

Las excavaciones se desarrollaron entre 1922 y 1925, dirigidas por Florentino López y estuvieron paralizadas hasta que Xaquín Lorenzo las reanuda en el año 1948. Una tercera fase de excavaciones iniciada en 1980 dio al yacimiento su aspecto actual. Excavations under the direction of Florentino López took place between 1922 and 1925 and were then suspended until re-initiated by Xaquín Lorenzo in 1948. A third phase begun in 1980 gave the site it’s modern-day appearance.

Descubiertas accidentalmente en el 1913 con las obras de la carretera de subida al monte, las ruinas del castro de Santa Tegra representan uno de los poblados galaicos-romanos de mayor superficie de Galicia, aunque menos de la mitad de su extensión ha sido excavada. Es Monumento Histórico Artístico desde 1933 y sin duda el yacimiento castreño más famoso de la comunidad. Habitado por una población de la Edad del Bronce Final, el espacio estaba dividido entre ‘barrios’ formados por viviendas circulares y cuadradas, siendo estas últimas de influencia romana. Los almacenes y talleres artesanales formaban también parte de la vida de este castro, ubicado en un lugar estratégico a 200 metros de altura en un entorno natural de excepcional belleza. Discovered accidentally in 1913 during construction work on the highway which ascends the mountain, the ruins of the walled hill fort of Santa Tegra represent one of the largest Romano-Gallego settlements by surface area despite the fact that less than half the site has been excavated. A HistoricArtistic Monument since 1933, it is, without doubt the best known of these ‘castreño’ sites in Galicia.

Inhabited by late Bronze Age peoples, the site was divided into quarters of circular and square dwellings, the latter being of Roman influence. Stores and workshops also formed part of the life of this centre which was strategically situated at an altitude of 200 meters in a setting of exceptional natural beauty.

Desde lo alto del monte es posible contemplar una bella panorámica del castro y de la localidad de A Guarda. The mountain’s highest point affords a beautiful view of the castro and the town of A Guarda. Las viviendas en su mayoría de planta circular estaban construidas en piedra y cubierta de madera y paja con un pilar central de madera para su sustentación. The dwellings are mostly of circular form and were constructed in stone with a central, supporting wooden pillar and covered with a roof of wood and straw.
Muchas de las piezas encontradas en el yacimiento están expuestas en el Museo Arqueológico de Santa Tegra, creado por la Sociedad “Pro-Monte” en 1914. Many of the remains found at the site are on display in the Santa Tegra Archaeological Museum set up by the ‘Pro-Monte’ Society in 1914.

Situados en los verdes alrededores del ‘jardín do Baixo Miño’, los molinos de Picón y Folón, admirablemente restaurados, forman parte del rico patrimonio etnográfico de la zona de O Rosal. Constituyen un total de 71 piezas que fueron declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural por la Xunta de Galicia. Los primeros molinos datan del siglo XVII y fueron utilizados durante decenios para moler el grano de trigo, centeno o maíz y producir harina. Aprovechando la pendiente del río, algunos aparecen edificados en cascada entre colinas, árboles, riachuelos y montañas, confiriendo al paisaje una increíble belleza. Esta armoniosa integración de la industria tradicional en la naturaleza constituye una de las más importantes concentraciones de molinos fluviales en Europa. Situated in the green surroundings of the ‘garden of Baixo Miño’, the beautifully restored mills of Picon and O Folon form part of the rich ethnographic heritage of the O Rosal region. Constituting a total of seventy one items declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the Galician council, the first mills date from the 17th century and were used for centuries for milling wheat and rye and to make flour.

Declaradas Monumento Nacional, las ruinas de Santo Domingo pertenecían a un templo construido por los Dominicanos en el siglo XIII, que constituyó en su tiempo el edificio gótico más grande de Galicia. De esta época, se han conservado elementos característicos de su estilo arquitectónico: la cabecera, sus típicas ventanas ojivales, el rosetón y cinco ábsides poligonales. Se puede también admirar la fachada de la Sala Capitular, que data del siglo XV. Hoy en día, el espacio aloja parte de la colección del Museo arqueológico de Pontevedra, con lapidas romanas, sarcófagos medievales, restos paleocristianos y una importante colección de piedras de armas.
Declared a National Monument, the ruins of Santo Domingo were once part of the religious buildings constructed by the Dominicans in the 13th century and, in their day, constituted the largest gothic structure in Galicia. Some characteristic elements of the architectural style of the era have survived: the main body of the church with it’s typical pointed windows, rose window and five polygonal apses as well as the facade of the Sala Capitular dating from the 15th century. Today the site houses part of the lapidary collection of the Pontevedra Archaeological museum; Roman cut stones, medieval sarcophagi, Paleochristian remains and an important collection of stone weapons. 178

En las cercanías del famoso Dolmen de Dombate, permanecen otros ejemplos de monumentos megalíticos de interesante variedad, que están enlazados por una ruta la cual tiene su punto de partida en la localidad de Vimianzo. Este recorrido esta organizado en siete paradas, donde se pueden observar estas antiguas sepulturas, algunas de ellas de hasta 4000 años de antigüedad, aisladas en entornos naturales apartados de la civilización moderna. En algunos de estos conjuntos podremos admirar restos de grabados y pinturas en sus piedras, algunas de ellas de colosales medidas y de hasta 12 toneladas de peso.
In the area surrounding the famous Dombate dolmen, linked by a route beginning in Vimianzo, are the remains of an interesting variety of Megalithic monuments. The route is divided into seven stages allowing us to observe ancient tombs, some up to 4000 years old, in their isolated setting far from modern civilization. At some of these groupings can be seen traces of carvings and rock paintings on the stone walls, some of which reach colossal measurements and weights of up to twelve tonnes.

Extendiéndose a lo largo de más de 300 kilómetros entre Portugal y Ourense, la Vía Nova fue construida en el siglo I d.C. en tiempos de Vespasiano para sustituir los caminos locales que unían Braga y Astorga en los primeros años de la dominación romana. La razón de su creación se encuentra en la explotación de los recursos mineros de la zona, especialmente auríferos. A lo largo de su trazado, las millas romanas se encuentran señalizadas mediante miliarios y su recorrido está salpicado de vestigios y ruinas, constituyendo una extraordinaria fuente de información sobre los tiempos de la romanización en Galicia, y un verdadero tesoro arqueológico.
Extending over 300 kilometers between Portugal and Ourense, the via Nova was constructed in the 1st century A.D at the time of Emperor Vespasian to facilitate the exploitation of gold and other mineral deposits in the area and as an alternative to the local paths linking Braga and Astorga in the early years of Roman dominance. Roman milestones mark each half mile along the route which is dotted with ruins and remains making it an extraordinary source of information about the Roman era in Galicia and a veritable archaeological treasure.

En nuestro caso este listado sería prácticamente nulo, al ser Maravillas de Galicia nuestro primer título, creado por la infinita ilusión de contar las virtudes de una tierra que nos fascina. Nuestro premio más valioso no se coloca en una estantería, si no que se almacena en el recuerdo: la memoria de todos los momentos vividos durante estos meses de trabajo, recorriendo y disfrutando de los bellísimos rincones de esta tierra, que es, en sí misma, ya una maravilla. No podemos olvidarnos en estas últimas líneas de todos aquellos que nos han ayudado a convertir un sueño inicial en esta realidad… a todos ellos, especialmente a nuestras familias, va dedicada cada una de las páginas de esta obra.

he majority of dedications to the authors of books we have consulted begin with a long list of editorial or photographic awards. In our case the list would be pretty short , ‘Treasures of Galicia’ being our first title, created out of the dream of sharing the treasures of the land we love. Our greatest reward would be that this book does not languish on a shelf but rather remains in the memory, just like our memories of all the moments lived during these months of work, travelling and enjoying the beautiful corners of this land that is, in itself, a ‘treasure’. And not forgetting in these last few lines all those, especially our families, who helped make the dream a reality. To each one of them we dedicate a page of this book.
