“Let the little children come to me.” A Back To School Call To Worship Inspired By Matthew 19: 13-15 Marben Bland Leader: Little children were brought for Jesus to lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples scolded those who brought them. “Don’t bother him,” they said. People: But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” Leader: Little children are going back to school, and as the school door opens some students come without enough to eat, to be taught by teachers who are paid too little and are hamstringed by a curriculum devised by politicians not educators. People: But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” Leader: Little children are going back to school and as the school bell rings, gun fire also rings, as weapons of war have infiltrated the haven of the classroom. One: As a new school year approaches, we pray a special blessing for the students in this community who face new challenges and await new learnings. We also pray for the teachers and parents whose daily responsibility is to guide and instruct those who carry tomorrow’s hope. May we recommit ourselves to support children everywhere prayerfully and actively. Always remembering as Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.”

#53 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah William Williams/Peter Williams/Thomas Hastings

1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty, Hold me with Thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more. 2. Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing waters flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through; Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my strength and shield; Strong deliverer, Be Thou still my strength and shield. 3. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me through the swelling current, Land me safe on Canaan’s side; Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee; Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee. Amen. 4

Matthew 19:13-15 13 Little children were brought for Jesus to lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples scolded those who brought them. “Don’t bother him,” they said. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and don’t prevent them. For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” 15 And he put his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left.

Summary Of The Decalogue The Congregation, Rise and Sings:

“From all that dwell below the skies, let the Creator’s praise arise; let the Redeemer’s name be sung, through every land by every tongue.” The Minister Says:

Hear what Christ our Saviour saith, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all my mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. THE GLORIA PATRI The Congregation, Rise and Sings:

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.” 6

#307 Sweet Hour of Prayer William Walford/William B. Bradbury

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! That calls me from a world of care, And bids me at my Father’s throne Make all my wants and wishes known; Refrain In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief, And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

#251 I Surrender All Judson W. VanDeVenter/Winfield S. Weeden

1. All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily give. Refrain I surrender all, (I surrender all). I surrender all, (I surrender all). All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all. 2. All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow; Worldly pleasures all forsaken, take me, Jesus, take me now. Refrain I surrender all, (I surrender all). I surrender all, (I surrender all). All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.

Holy Communion The Call to Communion to be made by the Minister

You that do truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbor, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways, draw near with faith and take the holy sacrament to your comfort, and make your humble confession to Almighty God. The General Confession to be made by the Minister and people

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people , we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word, and deed against your divine majesty, provoking most justly your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful God for your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake; forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9

Prayer of Consecration to be made by the Minister Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, who of your tender mercy did give your only son, Jesus Christ, to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, who made there by his oblation of himself, once offered, a full perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute and in his holy gospel command us to continue a perpetual memory of that his precious death until his coming again; hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech you, and grant that we receiving these your creatures of bread and wine, according to your son, our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who in the same night that he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, , and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat this is my body which is broken for you. This do in remembrance of me.’ Likewise after supper he took the cup and when he had given thanks he gave it to them saying, ‘Drink all of it, for this is my blood of New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins; do this, as often as you shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Amen.’ Receiving The Body Of Christ

The body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for you to preserve your soul and body unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your heart by faith with thanksgiving. Receiving The Blood Of Christ

The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for you to preserve your soul and body unto everlasting life. Drink this in remembrance that Christ’s blood was shed for you and be thankful. 10

The Lord’s Prayer To be made by the Minister and people

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

#321 Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross Fanny J. Crosby/William H. Doane

Jesus, keep me near the cross; There a precious fountain, Free to all, a healing stream, Flows from Calvary’s mountain. Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, Be my glory ever, Till my raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river. 11
