After the election Brown was appointed Commerce Secretary in 1993 the first black to hold the office.

Ronald Harmon Brown was born on Aug. 1, 1941 in Washington, D.C., to two graduates of Howard University, William Brown and Gloria Carter Brown. But his home was Harlem, and more specifically the Hotel Theresa on 125th Street, which his father managed. The hotel was across from the Apollo Theater, a mecca for black entertainers, politicians, and sports stars.

He was considered one of Washington's most skilled political insiders, a consummate deal maker placing the creation of American jobs at the center of the nation's foreign policy. It was in support of creating American jobs where Secretary Brown was killed in a plane crash on April 3, 1996, while on a trade mission to Bosnia.

Luke 24:13–35 tells the story of an encounter the risen Jesus had with two of his disciples as they were walking to Emmaus, a village about seven miles from Jerusalem.
