Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining what it want to do.

Vision, Mission and Values

Imagine taking a vacation without first deciding where you are going or how you will get there. The first, and arguably most important, step of the strategic planning process is to create a vision, mission and values statement.

SWOT Analysis

The SWOT analysis process can flush out many great ideas to help target development, growth and improvements.

Write Goals

Goals are only as effective as the formalized process of achieving them. Many organizations use the SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) goal process to ensure their goals are achievable.

Perform A Gap Analysis

A gap analysis answers the question, “where are we compared to where we want to be”? The process looks at the vision – where do we want to go – and compares it to where we are currently.

Who is involved? What do I want to achieve? When do I need to achieve this? Why is this goal important?

Will it be clear when the goal is complete? Is it reasonable to complete the goal in the time allotted?

CURRENT STATE Using the goals, you have developed list the current activities associated with the goal. For example, if the goal is to have a website that can interact with members and visitors completed in six mounts list what things are currently in the works to complete the goal.

DESIRED STATE Again, using your goals state what the desired or the ideal state when the goal is achieved. Returning to the website goal answers regrading desired state could include functional interactive website with 90% engagement by members, visitors and guests.

GAP DISCRIPTION The gap description is a listing of the resources including people and money that are needed to move from the current state to the desired state. These gap items need to be secured in the process of achieving the desired state.
