Emoção e expectativa antecedem o deslumbramento da entrada de cada ala, de cada alegoria, de cada passista. A empolgação dos componentes é contagiante. It’s February in Rio de Janeiro! The greatest show on Earth is about to begin! Set in the Wonderful City and with the Sambadrome as a stage, Cariocas, Brazilians and tourists from around the world eagerly await the beginning of the samba schools’ parades. A night of magic and enchantment awaits. Result of the year-long work of thousands of people, the grand staging of the theme chosen by each samba school will parade through the Avenue, to the sound of tambourines and percussion. Excitement and anticipation precede the wonderment of the entrance of each wing, each allegory, and each dancer. The excitement of their components is infectious. Welcome to the Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro! When the fireworks illuminate and color the sky, heralding the entry of the first samba school, the Marques de Sapucaí Avenue becomes the stage for one of the greatest open spectacles in the world, like none other, depicting the most significant elements of the Brazilian cultural expression. Each school that passes in front of us, like an opera, tells a story in samba rhythm, with a chorus of thousands of voices, lush sets and costumes and a lot of emotion. The “Roteiro dos Desfiles” (Carnival Parade Guide) reaches its fourth edition, adding information to the spectacle. When the curtains of the Sambadrome open, beginning the presentation, it allows you to follow and understand the meaning and significance of every allegory, every costume, every detail, imagined by the carnival designers, turned into reality, and passes to the rhythm of samba drums.

A noite começa com a União de Jacarepaguá no circuito histórico e cultural da cidade de Vassouras: dos Barões do Café à Universidade. Relembre as muitas faces de Chico Anysio, o mestre do riso, com o Paraíso do Tuiuti. “Das maravilhas do mar fez-se um esplendor de uma noite” é o tema da Tradição, que reedita o enredo da Portela de 1991. As águas milagrosas de Caxambu vão invadir a Avenida com a Verde e Branco de Madureira: Império Serrano. Na madrugada lembramos que todo artista tem que ir onde o povo está! E a Cubango traz os artistas populares com sua infinita imaginação para o aplauso do público da Sapucaí. Com esperança no coração, o Sereno de Campo Grande fala da busca pela paz, equilíbrio, harmonia e igualdade. Negras guerreiras, pérola mulher, da grande mãe ancestral às artistas brasileiras, a Império da Tijuca reverencia as bravas mulheres negras. Desvendando os mistérios da mente humana, fanatismo é o tema de enredo da Caprichosos de Pilares. Já no amanhecer, a Unidos de Padre Miguel presta uma grande homenagem à cultura afro-brasileira, falando dos Orixás. E deixando saudades a Renascer de Jacarepaguá encerra o desfile da Série A, exaltando a fauna e a flora da cidade maravilhosa: Rio de Janeiro. Agora, é aguardar o resultado! Mas um campeão já se conhece: o Roteiro dos Desfiles que, em sua quarta edição, dá um show de informação e merece nota 10 em todos os quesitos.

Enjoy the good company of the Carnival Parade Guide and have a good Carnival! Prepare for a night of great emotion! Follow the presentation of the samba schools and learn the meaning of each wing, allegory and costume with the “Roteiro dos Desfiles” (Carnival Parade Guide) in the Carnaval of information. The evening begins with União de Jacarepaguá in the historical and cultural circuit of the city of Vassouras: from the Coffee Barons to the University. Recall the many faces of Chico Anysio, the master of laughter, with Paraíso do Tuiuti. “From the wonders of the sea came a splendor of a night” is the theme of Tradição, which replays the plot of Portela in 1991. The miraculous waters of Caxambu will invade the avenue with the green and white of Madureira: the Império Serrano. Every artist has to go where the people are! And leaving us yearning, Renascer de Jarcarepaguá closes A Series with a parade extolling the flora and fauna of the wonderful city: Rio de Janeiro. Now we wait for the result! But a champion is already known: the “Roteiro dos Desfiles” (Carnival Parade Guide) that, in its fourth edition, gives us a show of information and deserves a score of 10 on all counts.

Sinopse do Enredo | Samba Theme Synopsis Com o enredo em homenagem aos Barões do Café a União de Jacarepaguá traz para a Marquês de Sapucaí um riquíssimo legado histórico cultural, herança dos tempos áureos do café no Vale do Paraíba Fluminense: a cidade de Vassouras. Já considerada um berço da diversidade cultural da região, ainda tem um papel importante no cenário turístico no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Parte desse legado se materializa pelo conjunto urbanístico e paisagístico existente até hoje na cidade. Paying tribute to the Coffee Barons, the União de Jacarepaguá shows at the Marquês de Sapucaí a very rich historical and cultural legacy, heritage from the golden years of the Coffee Industry in the Vale do Paraíba Fluminense: the Vassouras city. Once considered the birth of the cultural diversity in the region, the town still plays an important role in the touristic scenario of Rio de Janeiro state. Part of this legacy is represented in the urban and landscaping concepts existing in the city to this day.

É a este toque que os grupos étnicos bundos-angolanos chamaram “semba” ainda na África. Daí que... Fun Facts: The word “samba” it’s a distortion of “semba”. But, what does “semba” means after all? Sinopse do Enredo | Samba Theme Synopsis Cantando as riquezas das águas como fonte de sua inspiração... Chega a Marquês de Sapucaí o Império Serrano. Com o enredo em homenagem à cidade de Caxambu, berço das águas no sul do estado de Minas Gerais apresenta o nascimento das águas a partir da mitologia, o jongo, as rezas e ladainhas, o caxambu (manifestação popular afro-brasileira) e o samba. Singing the richness of the waters as the source of its inspiration... the Império Serrano arrives at the Marquês de Sapucaí. With the samba theme as a tribute to the city of Caxambu, birthplace of the waters in the south of Minas Gerais, it presents the birth of the waters from mythology, the Jongo, the prayers and ladainhas (a Brazilian form of praying), the Caxambu (a popular Afro-Brazilian manifestation) and samba.

Silas de Oliveira ser apontado como o maior compositor de sambas-enredo da história, isto não é novidade. A novidade é o historiador LuizAntonioSimas, do júri do Estandarte de Ouro, afirmar que o Império Serrano ainda permaneceria sendo a escola imbatível em sambas-enredo mesmo se Silas de Oliveira não tivesse existido, tamanha a coleção de obras geniais de outros compositores da escola. Fun Facts: Silas de Oliveira being named as the greatest composer of samba-plot of the story is nothing new. The novelty is the historian Antonio Luiz Simas, jury of the “Estandarte de Ouro” (Golden Banner), stating that the school Imperio Serrano would remain still unbeatable in samba-plot even if Silas de Oliveira had not existed, such is the collection of genius works by other composers of school.

O desfile de corsos, pela então nova avenida da cidade, começou no carnaval de 1907, puramente ao acaso. No final da tarde entrou na pista o automóvel presidencial conduzindo, de capota aberta, as filhas de Afonso Pena, então presidente da república. A partir daí, todo mundo que tinha carro - e eram pouquíssimos – começou a ir e vir pela avenida atirando confetes, serpentinas e jatos de lançaperfume. Estava lançada a moda. Fun Facts: The corso parades – an antique type of Carnival block – at the city’s newest avenue started during the Carnival of 1907, by accident. By the end of afternoon, the presidential car appeared driving, with the top down, the daughters of Afonso Pena, the current president. From that moment on, the citizens who had a car – they were just a few – started to drive on the avenue celebrating with confetti, serpentines and perfume sprays. And that’s how a new custom’s started.

Sinopse do Enredo | Samba Theme Synopsis O GRES Sereno de Campo Grande chega à Marquês de Sapucaí pedindo paz para o mundo. Apresenta a criação da palavra sagrada e viaja pelos seus quatro setores mostrando a relação do homem com os princípios de Deus. The GRES Sereno of Campo Grande arrives at Marquês de Sapucaí asking for peace to the world. Presents the creation of the Holy word and travels through its four sectors showing the relation between man and God’s principles.

A Sereno é o exemplo raro de bloco familiar que alcança o status de escola de samba. Era todo mundo da família se vestindo de mulher caindo na gandaia de calcinhas, sutiãs e saiotes pelas ruas de Campo Grande. A adesão foi tamanha que ...virou escola e com muita mulher bonita que chegou depois. Mas a diretoria continua sendo toda da mesma família, mudou muito pouco. Exceto pelos trajes mais sóbrios que passaram a usar no carnaval. Fun Facts: The Sereno is the rare example of a block family to achieve the status of samba school. Everyone in the family would dress up as women and party hard, wearing panties, bras and petticoats through the streets of Campo Grande. Adherence was such that it became a school and ... with a lot of beautiful women who arrived later. But the board remains all part of the same family, having changed very little. Except for the more sober attire that they started using in the carnival.

Sinopse do Enredo | Samba Theme Synopsis A Império da Tijuca desponta na Avenida com um enredo em homenagem às mulheres negras. Apresenta Ìyámì, a grande mãe ancestral, senhora dos pássaros, Eleèye, as negras guerreiras em solo Africano, a bravura e ousadia das negras do Brasil, as negras musas e mulheres inspiradoras e as pérolas negras, as grandes artistas negras brasileiras. The samba school Imperio da Tijuca appears at Sapucai with a theme that pays homage to all the black women. It brings Ìyámì, the great ancestral mother, the Goddess of birds, Eleèye, the African warrior women, the bravery and the boldness of black women from Brazil, the black muses and the black pearls, the great Brazilian female artists.

A disputa entre Madureira e Tijuca pelo título de capital do samba vem de outros carnavais: já nos desfiles inaugurais da Praça XI a Tijuca era representada por cinco agremiações: Azul e Branco do Salgueiro, Estrela da Tijuca, Unidos da Tijuca, Príncipe da Floresta e União do Uruguai; e do outro lado da cidade, Madureira era representada igual e “empatadamente” por outras cinco escolas: Vai Como Pode, Prazer da Serrinha, Guarani, Lira do Amor e Paz e Amor. Nos carnavais do passado os jornais apostavam pra valer nos dias de folia. A “Gazeta de Notícias” foi a grande incentivadora dos cordões; O “Jornal do Brasil” fazia tudo pelos ranchos; O jornal “A Manhã” apoiava os blocos enquanto “O JORNAL” cuidava dos blocos suburbanos. Isto sem contar que “O MUNDO ESPORTIVO” praticamente inventou o desfile das escolas de samba. Fun Facts: In the past, the newspapers were huge sponsors of Carnival. The samba school GRES Unidos de Padre Miguel honors the afro-Brazilian culture through the richness and strength of the Orishas, deities of Candomblé. It is the Party in the Kingdom of Oyó at the Sambodrome.

Confirmando a imensa e histórica tradição carnavalesca do bairro, a primeira batalha de confetes da cidade ocorreu na Praia de Botafogo lá pelos idos de 1907, mais uma vez promovida por um jornal: A Gazeta de Notícias. Fun Facts: The neighborhood of Botafogo has a long Carnival history. It was the pioneer in the “confetti war” which took place in 1907 and was promoted by the newspaper A Gazeta de Noticias.

The Renascer samba school crosses the Sapucaí on an outstanding trip. On marvelous lands, an enchanted city marches, by the blessed beauty, the heart of my Brazil: Rio de Janeiro.

No século XIX a estreitíssima Rua do Ouvidor foi o logradouro mais importante da cidade, a rua mais famosa do país e mais animada do carnaval. Como alguém pode hoje imaginar que ali, ainda hoje tão difícil de caminhar sem esbarrões, a rua se transformava em baile de carnaval para mais de 50 mil pessoas. Fun Facts: In the 19th century, the extremely narrow Ouvidor Street was the most importante place in the city, the most famous street in the country and the most exciting during the Carnival. It’s almost unimaginable that at a place so tight, where’s hard to walk without bumping into people, the street became a carnival ball for over 50 thousand people.

A flight full of them invades Sapucaí. The birds celebrate their freedom, flapping the wings in harmony and singing beautifully. In order to protest against the bird cruelty practiced by those who destroy the nature, the ones who steal their freedom of flying freely, exist and respect the nature, the last allegory of Renascer’s parade sets the responsible ones – for the extinction of various species of our fauna – to the place where they belong.
