“Huaycos: Design Strategies to [re] qualify the Ravines of Sucre� in Bolivia Sucre is sprawling in all directions without following a plan and facing many problems like lacking totally of public spaces and public services.

The difficult topography at a certain point was a barrier for development but now sprawl just spilled over the slopes and conquers new hills; many illegal settlements are located on the high risk land slopes contaminating the ravines and streams that still structure the city. On the other hand, there is a tremendous overlapping of activities centralized in the Historic Center and almost none in the further developments. Consequently, there are traffic and pedestrian jams. It is obvious that Sucre is denying the natural topography and ravines and the potentialities of the latter of being considered as a delicate, essential and open space element that could structure the city in a more sustainable way.

Three strategic locations are defined in areas of growth to further analyze and propose urban projects combined with strategies of small and economic interventions but big impact for the city. Landscape urbanism approach is used to restore the relationship of the ravine and the city and its new centrality and mobility as a strategy to support it.

Reading of the current situation of the city by delayering of information and the Vision map of Sucre representing the three areas of intervention and the green structure that links the public spaces with the natural areas of the ravines.

As an example, the following Strategic Location [2] is defined in the border between the urban and rural area of the city. The first intervention to be carried out would be done by the Municipality and the Industry by creating water treatments through vertical microphyte and aereated lagoons. At the same time a new border would be settle which according to the topography new programmes would be placed by different actors. Some of them as strategies to define the new border and flexible to be placed according to the demands of the comunity. The community itself could improve the already existing paths, the way to the Central Government could provide better streets through the Governmental Programmes of development that exist.

There would be also artificial pools for recreation as a way to slow down the rainy water and mitigate probable floods.

The contaminated ravine would become a productive land promoting orchards by a land concession.

“Intertwining Armatures” in Habaradua, Sri Lanka The project defines new armatures that operate at the scale of the urban-region by creating new bundles. Intertwining infrastructure and landscape, thickening infrastructure to (re)qualify the public realm and strategically inserting new amenities to consolidate existing concentrations.

Three main areas are identified in the Koggala Lake region: the natural ecological reserve coming from the North surrounding the lake and infiltrating into the built environment, both the natural reserve and the lake itself, form an unique ecosystem full of fauna and flora in the whole region of Galle and Matara. In this area with a very dispersed pattern of amenities, a new farm market complex with a promenade for harvesting rice during the season and sports field in other periods is implemented between the river and the main armature road. Bicycle paths connect the primary and secondary schools to this market complex and to the Ecological Park.

In the South-West, the see and the “lake-tongue” structure two interdependent towns Habaraduwa and Koggala -. The New Market, the new District Buildings, the Cinema, and the golf Course improve the urban image having a double façade, one to the see and the other one to the lake. These are linked by a new dynamic promenade that define the water edge and reinforce the public realm allowing exchange between both towns. The Habaraduwa Faculty of Tourism and Management is located in the main armature road integrated to the golf course and the Ecological Park.

The existing “Free Trade Zone” would have a new value and quality through the implementation of the “Open Fair Platforms” and the “Koggala Business and Convention Centre”. In the first one different activities would take place throughout the year from exhibitions for the Free Trade Zone, both in land and water, to concerts and all kind of fairs and festivities. In the second one all sorts of business, VIP meetings, discussion boards convention and conferences. In this integrated place, an interexchange atmosphere of its inhabitants with tourists would happen.

“Linking Soft and Hard” in Antwerp, Belgium It is an attempt to link the soft and the hard spine of the Structure Plan of Antwerp at a regional scale. To do so, the project aims to let the ecological area of the Hobokonse Polder re-conquer more space towards the Petroleum South site. From the other side the development programmes also would conquer the site in different phases integrated to the decontamination phase. This duality would be present in the site as a finger-like pattern following the concept of “shaking hands” as an act of meeting each other.

The main intervention strategies focus in the different condition of the edge between the green and the development fingers. The reshaping of the topography and the capping of the contaminated soil and different species of trees define de borders of the fingers. In between, new streets with open spaces allow diverse structuring conditions for the real state development to come.

Connections are implemented, from and to the polder, through walking and bicycle paths and finally, certain industrial heritage is conserved defining a new public domain linking sequentially the public spaces of the different fingers towards the riverfront.

There is already a recuperation of some empty areas in the “Companies site” which is an investment for public space. The “rail way company site” is kept as green open space for future programmes that the city would demand but with some infills such as the “Interactive Science Museum” and some car and bus parking areas in a campus-like structure. A mixed used of sustainable energy buildings with different housing typologies for single and families would be developed by real state with different densities, by the river high rise to give a new waterfront to the city of Antwerp and middle to low dense in the rest of the development fingers in the polder. Finally part of the quays project continues until the site.

“Prototipos Integrados, Chalco” in Mexico City (group project)

Part of the Architectural Association Visitng School in Mexico. The project consists on redefining the water cycle and using the new system and cycles as an oportunity to creat public space in the city.

A new water source is define by capturing the water running from the Volcano chain close to Chalco. Thus, fewer water is pumped from the aquifers and consequently the sinking of the city is reduced. Rainwater is harvest from large roofs and directed to the existing wells to reintruduce the water to the aquifer. The water which gets in contact with contaminants from vehicules is cleanned through a series of reed beds that structure the public space and the greening of the city. The ¨Canal de la Compañía, which used to divide the city from the lake is a continues water cleansing system through reed beds integrated with public spaces and now gives accessibility to the lake. The latter gets a new form as flood regulator. Other strategies such as flooded areas in public spaces to control water runoff, greenroofs and mobility following the new public space structure is proposed. This could represent an example on how to make profund changes dealing with the core problem of the sinking and unsustainable water system that the whole valley of Mexico City has and using this new water cycle as an oportunity to creat a new puclic space system that works as structure for the whole city.
