The late, great Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown, once sang that

“Love and Hate could never be friends.” Perhaps not but there’s no doubt that they’re as inter-dependent as Tom & Jerry, or for that matter, Ben & Jerry. This is of course as long as you don’t give Hate greater power than our good friend Love. For many, it’s freakishly strong and only relates to the most venomous aspect of human nature. But if we treat it as the opposite of Love in more than just it’s furthest polar position, it’s strength diminishes

and it’s uses multiply. When we talk of Love, we’re not only talking gushing waves of adoration, we also mean “I loves a bit of cheese on my chips” or “I love dancing down supermarket aisles.” So when Hate comes into the equation we also mean, “I hate having to queue in the post office” or “I hate walking in the rain.”

A recent Twitter campaign by @IHateCardiff called for the people of the city to shout about what they really don’t like about Cardiff. As they said themselves; IDontLikeCardiff wouldn't have quite the same ring to it. Neither is actually true of those behind the campaign. They love Cardiff but wanted to find out how we can all make Cardiff a bit better.

It’s much easier to think of things you don’t like, so their plan is to get all that out in the open and help to try and flip it. Using the negative to fuel the positive, which, (without getting too Zen by numbers), is the best kind of relationship one can have with Hate. Don’t get us wrong, we’re no bunch of haters. To quote another song lyric from Country Soul Singer, Razzy: “I Hate Hate, But I Love Love”.

Editorial

Less Hate Here Please What makes the world go round? What brings it to a shuddering halt? Well, this one's for the lovers and for (some of) the haters. Hates a mighty strong word though. We seldom use it in the confines of these four walls/16 pages. In fact, after this issue we wont ever get our tails up again. Promise. Lets leave that to the animals. This issue is much about the old adage "you reap what you sow". The idea of behaviour having repercussions or consequences, i.e. what you've 'done' will bear fruit. Why? Well, you never really do it for the gold bullion, it's the philanthropic heart that beats wildly each day which really makes the visual dream become reality. Seeing ideas come alive and released like kaleidoscopic butterflies... Oh,a tiny flutter to the heart. After all, its the month that cupid draws back his bow...

Hyperdub Hyperbole

Digital DJ Love

Now in its eighth year of operation Hyperdub has proven an ability to please dancefloors but also upend them out of any inertia.

Although the Turntable’s obituaries have been far too prematurely written recently and vinyl continues to confound those who have predicted it’s imminent death for years, there’s no denying that the new (and even the old) generation of DJs and producers have found many new and exciting means for playing out tunes to the dancefloor.

Perhaps intentionally, the label has made a habit of dispelling orthodoxies. Dubstep is simply all about the bass, some thought, until Burial put the emphasis on unfathomably detailed broken 2-step ballads which snake out of a laptop speaker. It's not really a vocals thing, we thought, and then Kode9 appointed The Spaceape to prove us gloriously wrong. For a label that relentlessly yearns for the future it's

re-imagining the north... instead of being flat cap, it's about computers, motorways and Jodrell Bank". To my ears, what's funny is how even talking about "computers" evokes both the future and a quaint past of techno hopes. They have a song called Gold, which surprisingly turns out to a cover version of fellow northern electronic musicians Human League. (Probably the third ever cover version on Hy-

Darkstar

From vinyl simulators such as Serato to mind boggling contraptions such as the Monome as championed by artists like Daedelus (LA’s number one beat experimentalist and honorary Welshman), the possibilities are seemingly infinite. For those lost amongst it all but wanting to catch up, Catapult 100% Vinyl in High Street Arcade have been hosting in-store workshops in Digital DJing. Their next class is on Thursday the 3rd of February and will provide an intensive tutorial covering a number of production techniques using Ableton Live. We asked a number of DJ / Producers from the city what their preferred method of DJing is.

Killer Tomato

taken to the challenge of releasing music on the supposedly outmoded album format as well as one-off club vinyl. Looking back, the label is like a path through a possible lineage of various dubstep strains. Credit goes to label boss Kode9 who is something of a digital soul Socrates, questioning any formula, holding it up to the light and prone to influencing young minds with his teachings. Arguably he's among the main reasons why dubstep hasn't stagnated, but diversified. As a DJ and a label curator his musical selections are done with great care and well worth your time. Take Darkstar for instance. Over several releases they seem to be reaching escape velocity from the dubstep template and going all gloriously synthpop on us, but traces of their origins remain. Their latest album is a glimpse into their time and space and is tersely called North, as befits that succinctness beloved of dubstep people. Writer Paul Morley picks up on some of their imagery and suggests "it's almost like a way of

perdub. You'll have fun finding the others.) Rather than a checklist of elements and a fixed sound, perhaps dubstep can be an attitude, a feeling and a kind of urban survival guide. Either way, we're privileged to welcome Darkstar, two instrumentalists and a vocalist, to Cardiff to expand on this live. If you're in any doubt about how essential this event is, their music has had The Stool Pigeon and The Telegraph alike pining for it, the latter saying it was "perfect for long wintry evenings". As a Scratch DJ the mere thought of digital DJing seemed like a craze that would not catch on but after seeing people like Roc Raida (X-ecutioners) using Serato to pull of tight beat juggles I realised this was the way forward. Seeing DJ Moneyshot play 6 hour sets on it in Cardiff finally convinced me, I jumped on eBay and purchased SL1. Not to sound like a sales rep, but it is the most responsive stable and easy to use DVS out there. You can scratch beat juggle, crab and flare away as if on real vinyl. The feel is unmatched. Serato supports MP3s WAFs AIFFs so any music file you can find on the planet you can now DJ with and you have access to an eternity of music. When I only had 20 quid to buy 4 records at £5 each my choice was limited. With MP3s around 70p you get more bang for your buck so with this new arsenal of eclectic music you can be ready for any DJ situation (It would be impossible to carry 30,000 records to every gig). . In the words of DJ Shadow, “It won't make a shit DJ good, but it will make a good DJ better”.

STD I use Ableton Live as it is really intuitive as a sequencer and has great features for time stretching and re-pitching audio, which I often need to avoid key clashes. It means you can

literally treat audio as putty and really play around with it. For DJ'ing it's generally best to use Complex as it's a great algorithm, although sometimes Repitch will work as well depending on what you're trying to do. With the clips window you can group clips to launch together in scenes and even control parameters so that when the clip has come to its end you can tell it to loop for an amount of bars or to move on to another clip or even to pick a random one. Great in the studio, and live you can introduce a drum roll or variation in a sequence really easily and worry about other things at the same time. It sounds corny but in a live situation with a midi controller it really is endless as to what you can do with it, you can drag and drop from any project any element or track from within Ableton allowing you to build live sets quickly and easily.

Dom Kane I’ll be honest; being a professional sound-designer as well as a producer/DJ, I’m lucky enough to have a job where I get to play with gadgets all day long, so I’m a complete tech-nerd! I think this comes across in my live performances as a DJ & producer, as I love to experiment with new gear. At the moment, my live setup consists of my main laptop (MacBook Pro) running Ableton Live, with different channels for full tracks, clips of tracks, layers and parts (extra basslines/melodies I’ve written), and Nerve VST (for additional drum sequences). The main channels are controlled externally by my Evolution midi controller and triggered by a Trigger Finger. I then have an iPad to control FX on each channel, and to trigger additional layers of sound. Then finally I have my iPhone with a few basic FX like filters and beat stutterers so that I can take it to the dancefloor and let other people get involved, which is pretty good fun! I’m often beta-testing software for different companies and so sometimes take an extra MacBook running pre-release software (drum machines,

synths, etc) sync’d to the main laptop, so that if it crashes, the main set isn’t affected. I have been known to take full analogue synths with me, but I'm crap at playing them live! I like each set to be a little bit different, so I quite often play up to 6 channels of sound at the same time, so the equipment comes in handy. It’s always changing (as is technology), but as long as people are dancing, I’m happy!

Carl Rylatt I've always used vinyl. It sounds better for a start! Plus with the kind of music I play, so much of it just isn't available on CD or MP3 or at least you'd spend as much time trawling the internet to find it as you would rummaging through record shops/carboots/charity shops etc. Which isn't as much fun as getting out there and getting your hands dirty. This can also mean you end up getting stuff that maybe not everyone has heard and as a result you get your own distinctive sound as a DJ, at least I hope so! Obviously there's the drawback of backache from pouring over crates and carrying them to and from gigs, also they do tend to take over your house once you get past the first thousand or so! But each one has a story or a memory attached to it which makes them feel special, in a way you just don't get with CD or MP3. Plus I don't know how to use CD decks! Thursday 3rd February

Ba-BaBoom! Passion drives Batucada Basics. Passion for fine Brazilian tunes and full-on parties. We asked promoter Neil Stephens to let us in on what their new night at The Institute is all about. Ba-Ba-Boom! have been fronting Brazilian parties in Cardiff since late '04, developing the Batucada Basics name in 2005. After a break we're now bringing our own nights of Brazilian Funk, Rio Hip-Hop, São Paulo

Recently we've been more associated with bringing Afrobeat, Klezmar and Bhangra bands to the city. But it's time to return to our roots, and bring back our most trusted of parties. Six years on people still go on about

DnB and Sizzling Samba to the Cardiff Arts Institute. Saturday 12th March, just as the echoes of the Rio carnival fade, we'll be showcasing a mix of live acts in the first of what should be a set of semi-regular nights. Samba dance class (9ish) and performance confirmed, and live music and capoeira looking likely, this is going to be proper. DJ-wise we draw up a broad spectrum of Brazilian music, from the funk, bossa and samba of the 1970s through to the contemporary turn with Drum n Bass, House and Rio's own electro hip-hop style baile funk. Old school artists like Jorge Ben and Elza Soares played up against Marcelo D2, Edu K and DJ Marky, and always a good dose of strong, pounding Batucada. Resident DJs are drawn from the local crews with an eye to the global, with Candela, Juju Nations, Ba-Ba-Boom and Triban all represented on the night, all keeping it 100% Brazil. Themed visuals and Brazil's national cocktail - the Caipirinha flowing from the bar get the passions running. Batucada Basics and old Brazilian parties were how Ba-Ba-Boom got going.

those early events, in the top room of the now defunct Model Inn. Stoked with a proper venue, a proper stage and a proper sound-system, this new CAI residency is going to be amazing. Check out the BA BA BOOM! playlist from Neil on Page 14. Saturday 26th February

Homeboy Sandman One of the most exciting emcees to have emerged from the New York underground in recent times, we are thrilled to have Homeboy Sandman at Cardiff Arts Institute on Friday 18th February. Before his arrival, Higher Learning pioneers, Kaptin & Ruffstylz decided to ask him a few questions to see what he’s all about. Check out the exclusive interview by pointing your smartphone at the QR code on the left. Oh, and get yourself down to The Institute on the 18th to see the man in action.

Chat Roulette (as if you don't know) is a website where you randomly meet people from all over the world via webcam. Some people you'll meet are not what you would call shy either. But imagine their surprise as they realise they're chatting to an entire room full of people. One webcam. One comedian. A room full of audience. An Internet full of nutters. This is going to be one hell of a social experiment/comedy experiment. This technology could be easily used to bring countries together, unifying our world and bringing about universal peace. Though largely it’s used by people exposing themselves live on camera. First aired as a concept for a night at LePub, Newport as part of the Newport Comedy Festival 2010 where it raised a few laughs and eyebrows! We're excited to bring this unique social experiment to the Institute. chatroulette.com Thursday 17th February

A week long festival of frolics from the 21st - 27th March at Cardiff Arts Institute and Milgi, featuring an array of marvellous soirees for vintage vultures everywhere. The festival is curated by Something Creatives, whose aim is to pull together an inspirational annual event that brings the cream of Cardiff’s Vintage scene. We take a look at the cult of "Vintage" from Electro-Swing to knitting and discover a deep vein of culture that is perfectly suited to the new austerity left in the wake of financial meltdown.

A Knitted Tank? Total craftgasm.

Craftivism

In a world of mass produced throw away fashion and new styles hitting Top Shop faster than you can say "trend-spotter", some people are taking a stand. These pioneers are moving away from the high street (although, inevitably, the high street has now started to catch on) in search of their own unique styles, to charity shops and boutique markets up and down the country. This movement is coupled with a rejuvenated interest in indie arts and crafts, inspiring a wide range of female-owned vintage boutiques and designer craft makers to start their own businesses. Many of which are now thriving in the face of economic uncertainty in almost every other sector. You just have to look at the success of folksy designer Donna Wilson (www.donnawilson.com) and the popularity of the Channel 4 programme Kirstie’s Homemade Home and similar to realize we are on the cusp of a craft revolution. ‘Bitch & Stitch’ groups have been a staple of cafés for some time, but now kooky ‘Art’s and Craft Clubs’ (See MILGI listings p14) are emerging as great social gatherings where people leave with a new skill. The underlying feeling beneath all this is that people like to make things with their hands. Craft clubs allow us to do this with forgotten homemade arts and creative traditions being passed down to new generations of makers in a world where craft is valued. This new generation

are embracing and subverting these domestic arts into valuable cottage industries. Make, mend and do culture will continue to grow while the recession looms and certainly has an irresistable appeal to many people. But there is also a deeper craving for authenticity and disillusionment in products from companies who want us to concern ourselves with lifestyle choices, it’s no wonder we are turning to local sustainable industry that mirrors our trust in the food industry. It seems like the craft renaissance is here to stay and is far more complex than yummy mummies learning crochet.

Vintage Music & Dance The cross-over in music and fashion can be found at all club-nights across the City. It’s the way we define ourselves. Never before have we been able to rehash and remix so many styles. In our digital world we can find hyper niche scenes and people who are into just about anything. Victorian Grime anyone ? Whether your into Swing, Rockabilly, Mod, Soul, Disco, Ska, Electro, Burlesque, Film or Art & Design it’s all being remixed and inspired by our rich creative and cultural heritage and classified as Vintage. It's a fine vintage too; we are rightly celebrated as a nation of eccentrics.

Vintage Radar: Want to know what’s happening in the world of Vintage around the rest of the UK and beyond, here are a few handy places to start.

A touch of class: In Full Swing @ Cardiff Arts Institute A country that has spawned some of the greatest cultural movements through music and fashion. We have lots to celebrate right here in our own City: In Full Electro Swing here at the Institute is more of a dance-floor friendly club night than a true to form Swing evening, but that’s where the excitement happens, when new and classic elements collide. Your head starts to spin if you started trying to pigeon-hole the Hi-tops, brogues, nu-rave flapper girls and dapper-dons on parade around the club. Similarly Come Dancing, every Tuesday evening is a chance to learn dance steps from Jive to Swing and Lindy Hop. The fashion and music scene interweave to create a vintage culture that borrows from various decades. Splicing influences to create movements of fashion and music that are sometimes just down right strange. Take the Steam Punk movement, floating the Victorian perspective on fashion, art, culture and architectural style and fusing it with comic book style futuristic inventions, powered by steam. Heath Robinson meets the Alien Trilogy. The great thing about vintage culture is that you are only held back by your imagination, so go forth and delve into our traditions. Find a sub-culture of your own and define it, make it your own and be sure to know somebody else will want to be part of it too.

Saturday 26th March

With the release of the Cher, Christina Aguilera Hollywood blockbuster, Burlesque has (once again?) hit the mainstream big time. Immune to fad however, there has been a solid scene flitting between mainstream oddity and underground risque attitude in Cardiff for a good number of years now.

With the help of regular workshops, Miss FooFoo LaBelle has been amassing a growing number of performers for her Burlesque Cardiff team here in the city and like the movement’s original vaudevillian and Berliner cousins, these include poets, comedians, bands and variety performers. Burlesque has ingrained itself into the performances of Cardiff’s top party band Johnny Cage & The Voodoo Groove, whose members could easily have worked their way through the ages, from the Moulin Rouge house band, through to the underground Rock n Roll clubs of the 50s and out into the modern day, with a few decades worth of experience and style behind them.

Square-Eyed Philanthropists Budgetary constraints are like wisdom teeth i.e. painful. However, the three music-video makers from Cardiff featured here have somehow managed to rub their pennies together to create magic, even despite the hardship. Guided by their internal philanthropic compass they make things happen. It's evident here that ideas are forged from these limitations.

Ryan Owen

Ben Reed

Which band would be your dream shoot?

What the devil are you currently working on?

Y Niwl.If I could shoot a video for Y Niwl, I would die a happy man. I think I actually said this to my girlfriend at Green Man.

At the moment I'm just writing pitches for a few videos. And writing a short film script about obese people involved in competitive dog throwing, it's a real competition where huge people in their pants see who can throw a dog's corpse the furthest, it's pretty amazing to watch. Recently I just finished a video for Joan As Policewoman.

What drives you on through the arduous editing process? Editing seems to be such a lonely and energy draining experience, and I think you definitely need to love the band and the song. The idea of finishing the video and getting the band to see it certainly gets me through. Ultimately I want the band to be happy, that’s the most important thing to me. Any top tips for wannabe directors? a. Find a band you like and know, and ask them whether they want a video. b. Do it for cost, and make it cheap and put as much effort into it as humanly possible. c. Do everything yourself so you end up knowing the whole process, and you’re always learning your trade. d. Drink lots of red wine. It helps me come up with silly ideas and gets me through editing instead of washing up or watching Evil Dead 2 again. e. Oh and be nice to all the filmmakers around you. It’s not a competition. You want to forge good relationships with people around you as you’ll hopefully work with these people for the rest of your life.

The surreal plays heavily in your work. Where do you draw inspiration? Thing's that inspire me mainly are people; things I see or hear in the street, or thing's I imagine I should see or hear in the street, making up story's about things I see or hear or imagine I see or hear in the street. Thing's I've not seen before that I’d like to see. Music, jokes, stories, cinema, photographs of places I've not been before or of people I don't know. As for name dropping people in popular culture, I like really obvious legends like Godard, Bob Dylan, and Vic Reeves. Can you offer any parental guidance? Make pictures that you've not seen before and don't make boring pictures. This quote from Lil Wayne always helps me as well: "Do what you does!" It's pinned to my wall.

Casey Raymond & Ewan Morris What are you two working on at the moment? With music videos you never quite know what's next until someone's paid you some money up-front. We've got another video lined up, but we don't want to jinx things by revealing who it is. It won't be the Human League. We also spend many an evening writing pitches for bands that we've never heard of who end up not liking our ideas. It's a lot of fun. What's inspiring the creative process? Compacted wisdom teeth at the moment, they keep me awake at night. The Internet is pretty good tool too. What's your mantra? Learn how to live on no money and you're halfway there. There's a lot of people out there with cameras who are quite happy to make videos and less and less money to make them with. Maybe it's best to make a good video and then decide if you want to be a director. I hope we don't sound bitter. caseyandewan.com

Year One? No Sweat.

Top Draw

No Sweat is our longest running night here at Cardiff Arts Institute. Each and every Wednesday, No Sweat showcases the best acoustic, folk and chilled-out acts in Cardiff.

This issues illustrations come from three of 2011's most hotlytipped ‘inkers’. They’ve each responded uniquely to the theme of Love//Hate and we are so keen to get to see more of their work that we’ve enticed them to come together for a group show in March.

It’s all about chilling your beans on the beanbags and soaking up some of the best emerging and established talent that this fine city has to offer. The night is always free entry, coz we’re nice like that. We just want you to come along and smile...

and eat some cake with us and some of Cardiff’s best musicians! Whether you’re a No Sweat regular or a No Sweat newbie, we’d love to see you.

Since February 2010, No Sweat has hosted over 100 different acts at CAI as well as being asked to curate a stage at WATUSI Festival. The night has built itself a solid reputation in Cardiff with its bohemian spirit and friendly atmosphere, something that No Sweat tries to keep at the core of the night each week. Why ‘No Sweat’? ‘We wanted to create a mid-week night that was all about chilling out and relaxing with friends, something that can be lacking in Cardiff with all of the mid week student shenanigans. Not that they’re a bad thing, it’s not just everyone’s cup of tea. No Sweat is aimed more at the folk who like cups of tea! And not sweating!’ explained Gemma White, No Sweat promoter. No Sweat will be celebrating its 1st Birthday on Wednesday 16th February – so come along

"Alternative Aesthetics is a Cardiff based illustrator/designer fuelled by the brain of Colin Kersley. Working predominantly in black and white, Alternative Aesthetics' illustrations are heavily character-based and are influenced by skate/surf/tattoo culture, traditional Mexican imagery, pirates, lumberjacks, monsters, music, cinema and lots of other fun stuff.

I draw stuff, listen to Clutch and pretty much everything I have ever done can be traced back to my love of Monster Munch. I'm currently studying a masters as well as working at Epoch Design. In my spare time I work as a freelance illustrator and am involved with Dirty Old Town (which is a radio show, clothing range and monthly music and live art event in Bristol).'
