Meet and greet Hello my name is Mrs Summers and I am the Headteacher of Grange Primary School. I am very much looking forward to meeting you in September. I have made a little PowerPoint to share with you, things you need to know in preparation for your child starting school. If you have any questions, please contact the school office.


Meet and greet Mrs Kinna Class Teacher

Hello my name is Mrs Kinna and I am the teacher in Rowan Class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. My favourite activities at school are phonics, painting and playing in the water area outside.

Hello my name is Mrs Bogle and I am the teacher in Rowan Class on a Thursday and Friday. My favourite activities at school are exploring our exciting topics, circle time and sharing stories.

Hello my name is Mrs Jones and I am the teaching assistant in Rowan Class. My favourite activities at school are construction, music and visiting our forest area.


Meet and greet Miss Dean SENDCo

Hi, I'm Miss Dean and I have recently joined Grange Primary as SENDCo. This means that I look after the well-being and pastoral needs of children alongside supporting those with special educational needs. I look forward to getting to know you all and welcoming you into our fantastic school.

Mrs Williams Family Support

Hello my name is Mrs Williams and I have worked at Grange Primary School for 26 years. My role involves Parent Support (Understanding Your Child); ELSA Support (Emotional Literacy Support); Behaviour and Inclusion; Safeguarding Lead and Early Help; and Attendance monitoring.


When will your child start in Reception class? • All children will start in the Reception class after the summer holidays. •

Week 1 – you will be invited to a stay a play session with your child to get to know your class teacher and explore the classrooms and outdoor area on Wednesday 2nd, Thursday 3rd or Friday 4th September Week 2 – from Monday 7th September children will attend school every morning (9.00am to 12.00pm) Week 3- from Monday 14th September children will attend school every morning and stay for lunch (9.00am to 1.00pm) Week 4- from Monday 21st September children will attend school full time (9.00am to 3.00pm)


Why is the Reception class so important? • First impressions matter! • Research shows that pupils have the biggest rate of learning from 3 – 6 years. • Children who do well in Reception go on to achieve well throughout school. • High expectations.


Behaviours for learning • Good behaviour is essential for effective learning • Emphasise potential, reward success and praise effort as well as achievement, rather than focusing on shortcomings and failure. • Parents and carers work in partnership with the school to help and support their children to behave well. • Bullying will not be tolerated.

What happens in the Reception class each day? • Short whole group sessions such as phonics, maths or topic • Short adult led activities such as reading or writing • Lots of play activities inside and outside! • Snack • Lunchtime • Stories and rhymes at the end of the day


Phonics - EYFS and KS1 have daily phonics sessions. We follow a programme called Read Write Inc - Focus on letter sounds, blending and segmenting for first term How can you help? - Ensure you use ‘pure sounds’ with your child - Practise correct letter formation


Maths - Whole class maths input - Weekly activities - Hands on, practical approach to maths How can you help? - Regularly practise recognising numbers, counting objects, counting forwards and backwards and talking about maths at home e.g. How many more to make…? Let’s put these into groups of… Which is heavier/lighter? Etc.


How can I prepare my child for starting school? • Promote independence – getting changed independently, cutting up food etc. • Toilet training • Name writing and recognition – remember correct letter formation! • Playing games like ‘I Spy’ or rhyming games • Orally blending the sounds in simple words e.g. c-a-t • Sharing books & singing rhymes


Parents as partners • Open door policy • Reading every night with your child (little and often, our policy is 4+ times a week) • Volunteers – helping in the classroom, trips, special events • Sharing achievements at home with us. • Newsletters


Transition in September •

When you arrive at school please follow the yellow arrows to the EYFS area and then wait on the yellow crosses. Please arrive arrive at the classroom door between 9.00am and 9.15am.
