ELAINE WYLLIE MBE Elaine Wyllie MBE, founder of The Daily Mile was the headteacher at St Ninian’s Primary School, Stirling, Scotland, when she founded The Daily Mile. Concerned by the lack of fitness displayed by children within the school, the children were encouraged to run around the school’s oval for 15 minutes a day to improve their overall fitness – and so, The Daily Mile was born in February 2012. By September 2012, the entire school was participating in The Daily Mile and the local community had begun to recognise the impact that The Daily Mile was having on the children. At the end of 2012, not one of the 57 primary school children at St Ninian’s was deemed “overweight” by the school’s nurse. Since Elaine’s retirement in 2015, she and her husband, John Wyllie, have dedicated their time and passion to promoting The Daily Mile initiative across the UK and beyond. In 2015, Elaine won the Pride of Britain’s “Teacher of the year award”, due to her passion for children’s health and wellbeing within the education community. In 2016, INEOS recognised Elaine’s passion for The Daily Mile and committed to being title sponsor of the initiative. With their support, the Foundation was established, and employees were based at the INEOS offices in London, England. In June 2016, Elaine was also presented as an Honorary Graduate of the University of Stirling, as a Master of the Arts. In July 2017, Elaine had the pleasure of meeting HRH Prince Phillip, when handing out Gold Duke of Edinburgh certificates. The Foundation also established partnerships with Public Health Wales & the Welsh Government, and Active Scotland & the Scottish Government – The Daily Mile continued to spread widely across the UK. In late 2017, The Daily Mile Fit For Life brand was developed – which was launched April 2018 – to truly provide children with the ability to get #FitForLife. In February 2018, the Foundation, INEOS and ITV announced their partnership – with ITV to be The Daily Mile’s official media partner in the United Kingdom. Since the launch, The Daily Mile has had two advertisements featured on UK television, and the initiative has been featured on such programmes as Good Morning Britain and This Morning. In January 2019, Elaine was named in HRH the Queen’s New Years Honours list for her ‘services to the fitness of children’. On 28th March 2019, Elaine received her MBE from HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge in a service at Buckingham Palace.

JON SMEDLEY, TEACH ACTIVE From its humble beginnings as ‘a file full of ideas’, Teach Active is now an award-winning, Chester-based company with an online platform offering over 2000 lesson and homework plans. Teach Active works in partnership with Youth Sport Trust, is endorsed by AfPE and has been recognised by Parliament for its outstanding contribution to education. How we started In 2008, Townfield Primary School in Birkenhead had poor attainment within mathematics. Furthermore, children did not enjoy the subject. During further investigation, a questionnaire on ‘Attitudes to Learning’ revealed that whilst maths was the least favourite subject in the school, PE was the favourite. The school SLT contacted the local authority, and began to work with the advisory teacher for PE – looking at ways of using children’s love of PE to enthuse, excite and engage children in maths. Maths lessons began to be taught in a much more active way. Lessons were taught away from desks, in the gym, outside and in school corridors. Pupils were up and away from their desks – being active, whilst at the same time being taught mathematics. The response was magnificent. Teachers adopted this approach throughout the school and very quickly attitudes to maths began to rise – so much so that in the space of two terms maths was now the children’s second favourite subject! (PE was still top) As attitudes to maths improved, attainment soon followed and after 12 months maths results across the school had been transformed and data showed children were now meeting and even exceeding end of year expectations Good news travels quickly and very soon other schools within the local area wanted to adopt this approach. This led to a file being put together – a file full of ideas – a file full of lesson plans and resources – a file called ‘Maths of the Day’! Over the years, the resource has grown from a file consisting of 70+ lesson plans to an online resource consisting of 1000+ lesson plans

RICHARD WHITEHEAD MBE Born and raised in Nottingham in the UK with a double through-knee congenital amputation, I developed a passion for sport at an early age. My parents encouraged me to participate in sports and taught me to live a life without limits. In 2004 I dreamt of running a marathon and signed up for the New York Marathon having never run a mile. Spurred on by the death of my best friend Simon whom we had lost to an aggressive form of bone cancer and also by amputee Terry Fox who had died from a similar bone cancer before completing his own running challenge across Canada, I knew I wanted to run to challenge myself and to raise awareness and funds for Sarcoma. At the time, I had no prosthetic running legs and was running on my knees using sports cups which was extremely gruelling and painful. At the 11th hour only 13 days before the New York Marathon, Ossur heard about my story and fitted me with my first running blades, and I successfully completed my first marathon. Driven by a desire to compete in sport as a professional athlete on the world stage and push boundaries, I was selected for the ParalympicsGB team as a sledge hockey player at the 2006 Winter Paralympic Games in Turin. Having experienced the pride of representing my country, when news of London 2012 broke I was keen to compete in the marathon on home soil. To my great disappointment I was told by the IPC that my disability was not eligible to compete and despite writing to complain about this lack of equality they refused to allow me to race. Undeterred, I set about re-training and set my sights on competing in the T42 200 metre category as part of the ParalmypicsGB team. As I crossed the line winning Gold I looked to the sky and dedicated my win to my friend Simon who had always supported and believed in me. Following London 2012, I retained my Gold medal at Rio 2016 also winning Silver in the T42 100m. I have also achieved 4 x World Championship titles in 200m . In 2019 I captained the team at the Dubai Para-Athletic World Championships and in 2020 I will continue to prepare for the postponed Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
