Our keynote speakers

BEN GARROD Ben is the Professor of Evolutionary Biology and Science Engagement at the University of East Anglia. He studied a Masters in Wild Animal Biology from the Royal Veterinary College and his PhD at UCL focused on studying the early stages of speciation in island-living primates through molecular and anatomical changes. Ben started broadcasting in 2014 with his award-winning BBC4 series Secrets of Bones. Since then, Ben have presented a range of television programmes and series, including Secrets of Bones (2014), Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur (2016), The Day the Dinosaurs Died (2017), Hyper-evolution: the Rise of Robots (2017), Secrets of Skin (2019) and Baby Chimp Rescue (2020).

WILDLIFE KATE (KATE MACRAE) Kate Macrae also known as Wildlife Kate has been a primary teacher for over 30 years and now teaches part-time in a large Nuneaton Junior school. Kate oversees learning outside of the classroom and the developments of the school grounds. She is passionate about enthusing young people about the natural world. Kates other consultancy work is all wildlife-based and takes her to all sorts of wildlife locations. The wildlife in her own garden and at Yew View, a private site she manages for wildlife. You may have also seen Kate on Countryfile, BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch.

THE SKINNY JEAN GARDENER (LEE CONNELLY) Lee Connelly (The Skinny Jean Gardener) is a Sunday Times Top Gardening Podcaster and Presenter from Essex. Through his work with CBBC Blue Peter and being the author of ‘How to get Kids Gardening’ and being one of the most influential gardening TV presenters, Lee has brought gardening to families, children and schools to create real memories gardening together. He is also the founder of The School Gardening Success Plan, that supports primary schools and teachers to learn how to grow their own and care for wildlife. The School Gardening Success Plan looks at being in every primary school by 2025.


Established in February 2019, our Social Farm has residents including chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, turkeys and goats. With plans constantly evolving to improve the space and welcome more animals into the Social Farm over upcoming months.

Workshops

THINK OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Support your young people by getting outside – everyday! This session covers the science behind why being outside is so beneficial to learning and mental health. Explore how you can adapt your planning and teaching space to facilitate this and acquire low cost, time efficient and high impact tips and techniques from the Natural Childhood Team at Shropshire Wildlife Trust. A session for everyone who believes in the true value of outdoor learning.

AWARENESS OF BEES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN THE ENVIRONMENT A self-written programme (started in 2014) after Alison Bees realised there was a need within primary schools to engage with young people about the importance of bees and pollination. Following the National Curriculum for Science, Alison covers many key areas for learning outcomes whilst focusing on bees.

OUTDOOR LEARNING TOOLKIT Field Studies Council are leaders in the field of outdoor education. In this workshop they will share tips, activities and topics that will build a toolkit for teachers wishing to engage and inspire students with outdoor learning. You will look at how virtual learning can prepare students for fieldwork and help embed the experience in the SOW. FSC aim to build confidence in linking outdoor learning and activities to wellbeing and cross curricular learning.
