Curriculum Vitae

I have always been intrigued by the role technology and sustainability has on the future of architecture. In order for our lives on this planet to improve, I believe that we have to be conscious about integrating technology and design that will allow for a more sustainable future. Adaptability is one of the strongest drivers of architecture. Innovation through design should rather leave behind an impression on the world instead of the planet. I have a knack for detail as well as striving for simplicity through my designs. On the premise of “Less is more”, true simplicity isn’t solely defined by the lack of embellishments but rather the idea of bringing about order to complexity. I try to achieve a level of simplicity through visual mediums such as the representation of my ideas as well as ordering complexity through my design process.

Human Confluence Entrance Interior Perspective

PROJECT | DESCRIPTION

S

outh African Migration + Interpretation Centre is an embodiment of transparency and generosity, bringing people together from all walks of life under an undulating vaulted roof that is reminiscent of starling and human flight patterns. The South Western façade lends itself to being an ever-changing sculpture, symbolizing the starlings of Africa due to their murmuration and reflective feathers. The ‘moving wall’ is made from small aluminium panels that are loosely fixed to a lightweight framed structure. The materiality and flowing design are inspired by the kinetic movement.

The contrast between concrete tectonics creates a sense of harmony with its glass façade that dematerialises the building’s volume. The white concrete expresses honesty and purity, having it as the predominant structural system, though the materiality is very heavy and static the form adds to the very nature of flight and movement which ultimately blends these seemingly paradoxical elements. The three-level building creates a dynamic destination that nurtures change, growth and creativity. The architecture responds to the light, culture and climate of Southern Africa.

Curriculum Vitae

PROJECT | DESCRIPTION Phil Saunders’ (conceptual artist) brief was to design a billionaire’s cliffside residence in the vein of John Lautner’s organic concrete and glass homes. “SAUNDERS DESIGNED ONE FROM SCRATCH, EVEN DOWN TO THE LOCATION, CHOOSING TO PLACE THE HOME ON THE BLUFF OF POINT DUME, A CALIFORNIA STATE PARK, REMINISCENT OF THE ARANGO RESIDENCE, IS SUBLIME.”

Point Dume

The brief for this project was to choose a fictional building and environment. I chose Tony Stark’s mansion from the Iron Man movies. The house varies in design throughout the trilogy. My aim was to combine different aspects of the estate into a final model. Various clay rendering techniques were explored for representation purposes. Film material, set images and concept art was used as reference to assist in the modeling process.

PROJECT | DESCRIPTION

T

he observatory is situated upon Ounasvaara Hill in Rovaniemi, Finland which lies within the Arctic Circle. The contextual landscape provides tourists and locals access to the observatory through hiking trails. The form was inspired by Nordic vernacular building traditions such as those of the ‘fiskehjell’ and stands on weather resistant timber, piles thawing the boundary between land and fjord. These timber-supports also emulate the surrounding texture of the pine forest and ensure that the bridge leaves a minimal footprint in the landscape. The bridge is raised above the ground to the level of the tree crowns. Deriving the shape of the structure was led by the concept of a panoramic view of the vast landscape.

The triangulated roof provides for a strong rigid structure but then mimics the curves of a jellyfish. The Bioluminescence of the Medusa jellyfish parallels that of Aurora Borealis and is further accentuated by the glow of the hanging lights scattered throughout the observatory. The unparalleled location manifests with nature in its purest form: surrounding forest and breath-taking Northern Lights.

“IN 2017, RESEARCHERS ACTUALLY SUCCEEDED IN USING ENZYMES TO TRANSFORM PLANTS INTO NATURAL LIGHT SOURCES, WHICH COULD REPLACE CONVENTIONAL LAMPS IN THE FUTURE.”

PROJECT | DESCRIPTION

T

he wildlife sanctuary is provides a safe haven for endangered wildlife. Catering for birds of the area such as the Cape Vulture and Martial Eagle. Conceptualising a sensitive response to the culture and landscape of the Drakensberg the chosen site sits on the eastern slope of a dam, emedded into the landscape. Concepts of land and sky linking to the nature of birds and flight was a driving force for the design. The contrasting materiality creates a harmony indicative of a bird in flight. CAPE VULTURE - “OUR PEOPLE WERE ALWAYS TAUGHT THAT IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE, YOU MUST PRAISE IT, SING TO IT, SING FOR IT AND THEN SING IN HONOUR OF IT… BIRDS SUCH AS THE VULTURES WERE RESPECTED AND HONOURED.” - CREDO MUTWA
