Believing, as William Morris said, that architecture is “the moulding and altering to human needs of the very face of the Earth itself”, through my studies and my work I developed a deep interest in the relationship between built and natural environment. Man-made environment has grown to such an extent that it can now deeply affect natural environment and, in its turn, natural environment is heavily challenging man’s adaptive skills. Nowadays it’s getting harder and harder to identify a border between these two domains. The border has actually become a fragmented edge, with the two realms permeating each other. As designers, we are today asked to shape this new environment, at every scale.

But it’s not only about a new context in which to work, it’s also about different issues to be addressed: the lack of responsibility and awareness in what we do (both as designers and citizens), the breaking-up of social relations, the growth of population far beyond Earth’s carrying capacity, people’s migrations and climate change. These are the features to consider in the conception of a new architecture for the ‘edge’. It goes without saying that such a new complex architecture requires a specific approach. In a moment in which the work of designers is questioned by society, I see this need of new tools and strategies as a chance for designers to claim a new, much-needed, social role. Multidisciplinary, site-specific, resilient, self-sufficient, reuse, climate-responsive, mimicry of nature, lifecycle, social component, biodiversity, permeable, flexible: these shall be the key words of our designs from now on. The selection of projects displayed in this portfolio shows some steps in that direction.
REFOUNDATION Master Degree / Integrated Design Lab 1 - IUAV University of Venice ( I ) Located in the realm of urban sprawl, this housing project explores new possibilities for communal living with the interplay of private and public spaces. Social integration and sustainability are key features.
The threshold of the dwellings on the ground floor is marked by a light structure which defines the private area and provides privacy for the individual outdoor space. The connection to to communal outdoor space is direct but never too strong or inevitable.

WALL LIBRARY Master Degree / Integrated Design Lab 2 - Iuav University of Venice ( I ) Venice’s former Quarantine Island is bound to be the museum of the city. The insertion of the new library into the delicate historical context is solved by working on the relation between building and perimetral wall.

VENICE GATEWAY Master Degree / Integrated Design Lab 3 - IUAV University of Venice ( I ) The project is an exploration of the possibilities disclosed by a future conversion of the Maritime Station of Venice. Rereading the way we access the city can lead to a whole reinterpretation of Venice itself.
CHARRETTE BLDG
Master Degree / Integrated Design Lab 3 - IUAV University of Venice ( I ) ‘To be on charrette’ means to be at the final hectic step of the definition of a project. A whole system of project management comes from that. The building embodies the system and provides locations for charrette events.
A key feature of the building is flexibility in use and interrelationship among spaces. Floor plan of main level with different temporary interior layouts.

PERMEABLE CITY Master Degree Thesis - IUAV University of Venice ( I ) Water-sensitive urban (re)design strategies were developed to address water-related issues in Italy’s four climatic macro-regions through historical research, scientific data and a toolbox of measures.
