I, Ana Cristina Ramalho Teixeira Gomes, Architect and Urbanist, am a member of the Cycle Mobility Sector of the Research and Urban Planning Institute of Curitiba (IPPUC) - a Governmental agency responsible for the urban planning in the city of Curitiba. The Cycle Mobility Sector was created by the former mayor of the city, Gustavo Freut, in order to promote the inclusion of the bicycle into the mobility context and to develop a series of projects destined to the infrastructure of the same. During the year of 2014, from January to December, Marco Antonio Kramer Chaves did an internship with us, in a regime of 20 hours a week. During this period, the sector developed a series of new cycleway projects, road sign posting, project implementation studies, sidewalk infrastructure and legal regulations for bicycle. Marco has participated in most of the functions developed in the sector, under my supervision, demonstrating great autonomy in the developed works, as well a great capacity for understanding and finding solutions to the problems that were presented. It is worth emphasizing the disposition and the commitment of the intern, which made this period with us quite satisfactory.

The city imposes extraordinary living conditions to dwellers, who need to adapt themselves to the city. Human beings live in two separate worlds, better known as our public and private lives. It is living inside our private lives we can be ourselves, where we shape ourselves as individuals, and where we can feel welcomed. The house is the place where we return to our inner selves, since we leave behind, in the city, the social behaviors and social roles—in other words, it’s a place where we can feel free. This was how we decided to approach the city: trying to establish a dialog between the two universes; an integrated world (the public) and a more permissive one, where we can be freer—the private world.
The squares have a characteristic rhythm where tall skylines are in contact with the main roads, and shorter edifications are in contact with secondary roads. With the objective of fitting into the region organizational structure, we chose to keep two-store buildings, allocating the program accordingly to each street characteristic—what made it possible to create independent access to different typologies, let alone integration with project surroundings.

G A L L E RY The pinacotheca features works from regional and national Brazilian artists. Besides the exposition and collection areas, there’s also seminar and atelier rooms. It is found in downtown Curitiba where there is a great deal of passers-by moving around. The area presents outstanding features which the design should respect. And, for this reason, we chose an implementation which tried to merge the design into the urban landscape.
The design should be an invitation to passers-by to come into the courtyard—where the construction mutates into curves and pathways, providing the visitor an exquisite architectural experience. The separation between public and restricted areas is created by the floors—the floor level (cafeteria, shops, and restaurant area) is accessible to everyone, while to access the second floor (where it is located the gallery) the visitor needs to go through a control gate.

BICA The project is structured on two different notions: one embodies the sky while the other epitomize the earth. The sky is represented by the roof since it projects a beam of light on the floor, creating a starry-sky shape. The light effect, altogether with the circle shape, creates a sensorial experience which contribute to beautiful and peaceful feels. The second notion is embodied by the floor—and it answers to a human basic need. These two things come together and are embodied by the “Bica”, and the meanings attached to these notions become inseparable, just like our body and spirit. In areas affected by the shortage of water, it is common to people from small villages to walk long distances trying to reach neighboring villages whose wells had not dried up yet. Thus, we suggest building a deep well, so people in need would always have access to water, because living constantly in shortage of water imposes a
hard reality on people. The only solution to this problem is to fight it, making use of a variety of techniques and actions to reduce the water issues. Perhaps the priority is to provide water to those who are thirsty. Therefore we suggest building a BICA. Bica is an old Portuguese word used to name the public place from where one could get water. From a place where water plays an important role it would be sent a clear message to all region—this a place one can go to get water when needing it, not to mention it would emphasize how important it is to perceive water as a key asset to survival whilst it would encourage people to consider ways to preserve it. The project ideas veer towards the importance of water, creating a symbolic alliance between pragmatic and spiritual matters. The project seizes the well-known recognizable symbols and try to express them through sensorial stimuli to help people to connect with
the spiritual world. The circle has always represented perfection, equilibrium and connection. Every religion, in its own terms, sees it as something divine. In Architecture, the circle brings people together and creates a friendly, conducive space to get-togethers of various kinds. With the objective to deal with these questions, we chose to use a geodesic structure, since it is a self-supporting structure which makes it possible to create big empty spaces without being necessary to recur to complex techniques—and it’s possible to be built by locals, let alone the fact it allows more flexibility when choosing the building materials. Bound to the structure, there’s a wood mesh, which can be built by local artisans. The mesh and the structure sustain a lightweight roof which can be easily mounted. It also makes it possible to control the amount of light entering the room, accordingly to the sun position.
The mesh is made of the same material found in the village’s fences. They leave only enough space so the light can go through it. And it can be made of thicker beams than usually used to building fences.
The areas which are exposed the most to the sun are in grey. In these areas, the space between beams is narrower.
The geodesic structure can be made of bamboo or any kind of native wood. Over the structure lies the mesh, in such a way the structure is not visible, internally or externally.
The floor is made with adobe bricks, preferably with light-colored bricks to promote a peaceful and well-lit environment. Depending on the availability of resources, the bricks can be cooked.
In order to avoid having a dry well from time to time, especially in those periods when the shallow wells can’t reach any water, we suggest a deep well to be dug. This way it will be possible to get water from deeper water layers.
