Technical English Cycles of professional family electricity and electronics Professional Family: ELECTRICITY AND ELECTRONICS • Technician Electrical and Automatic. • Technician Telecommunications Facilities. • Technician Electrotechnical Equipment and Facilities. • Technician Consumer Electronic Equipment.

This book is for vocational training courses specializing in electricity and electronics at a basic and preintermediate level. It aims to provide a thorough revision of all skills and linguistic competencies acquired at ESO. The approach is mainly communicative. A variety of common communication situations such as demanding information, travelling, going out, or ordering a meal have been included. With this course, students will be able to revise all contents they have already seen in ESO as well as get a basic knowledge of English for specific purposes in the electrics field while improving their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It is designed to achieve the following objectives: • Develop a learning method based on a basic level of English. •  Provide communication tools (oral and written) basic for everyday use in situations related to their pro-

fessional needs.

•  Understand and produce texts related to their own professional family. •  Evaluate the importance of English as an instrument for accessing information and as a means of perso-

nal and professional development.

In the development of content, the different curriculums from various regions have been taken into consideration. It includes content about technical manuals; e-mail; mobile phones; professional profile terminology; professional basic documents (newsletter, order forms, delivery notes, pro forma invoices, invoices, and payment documents); standard formulas to start, keep, and end conversations; work instructions; ways of clarifying a request; repetition and confirmation; timetables; curriculum vitae; employment exchange; etc. Contents Unit 1: Hello!

1. Reading Materials A varied range of materials are used to make enclosures in electronics. Materials are used according to their qualities: conductivity (electrical and thermal), toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance, price and cost, etc. Materials can be arranged in five main categories: wood, metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. Smart materials are widely used too. These materials change and modify themselves according to external conditions such as temperature (thermochromic materials), light (photochromic materials) , heat (shape memory alloys), etc. Electronic products include enclosures and circuits. It can be helpful to have a thorough knowledge on materials to be used. 1.1 Read the text again. Are these statements True (T) or False (F)? 1. Materials are chosen according to their price. 2. We consider corrosion resistance when we choose materials. 3. Materials come in five categories. 4. Smart materials are rarely used. 5. Smart materials change when electricity comes through them. 6. Photochromic materials are altered by light. 1.2 Match: 1. conductivity

1. Reading History of structured cabling Structured cabling is a unified telecommuncations cabling structure. During the 1980’s, there was a growing need for high capacity transmissions paths in buildings. Engineers and manufacturers designed “structured cabling” to unify criteria and guarantee system compatiblity. They proposed a universal standard for buildings cabling system. Structured cabling makes possible to support both, voice and data, that is, different communication systems, in the same building. Structured cabling includes a number of subsystems, as follows: •  A demarcation point, which is the point where the telephone company network and the building

wiring connect. It is usually ISDN networks.

• Equipment or telecomunications room. • Horizontal wiring. • Vertical cabling. • Work area components.
