Mike Simpson Head Coach • 11th Season Four-time NEC Coach Of The Year 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-07 Mike Simpson came to Gardner-Webb University in 1999 intent on building a competitive swim team from scratch and he produced immediate results. In the nine seasons since the program’s inception, Simpson’s teams have amassed an 117-50 record, won four consecutive conference championships, produced 61 all-conference selections - 48 women and 13 men, placed 14th and 30th in the nation, won an NCAA individual national championship and have had the highest ranked team GPA in the nation. The 2007-2008 campaign could best be defined as a new atmosphere for Simpson. He guided the first-year men’s swimming program to a third-place finish in the newly formed CCSA. The women’s program also took third in the first-year league after departing from the NEC. Simpson led the women’s team to two conference titles while the men’s program boasted its first-ever individual title winner. With some of the most talented student-athletes in his tenure during the 2006-2007 season, Simpson guided his squad to its fourth consecutive NEC conference title while garnering his fourth straight NEC Coach of the Year award. Terra Wilson, who was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the NEC meet, led a group of 10 that received all-conference honors. There, the Bulldogs set five NEC and school records over the three-day meet. Wilson, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events, took home All-America honors in the 200 free after touching the wall in 1:45.40, finishing sixth. In the 100 free, her time of 49.03 earned honorable mention All-America honors by placing 12th. She ended her career by being named to the Mid-Major All-America Team for the second consecutive season. Outside the pool Simpson’s team’s credentials are just as impressive. Last year, 11 student-athletes earned a spot on the NEC academic honor roll. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America tabbed the squad as an Academic All-American Team for the 2006 fall semester as the Bulldogs’ GPA of 3.419 placed them 10th nationally among all Division I women’s swimming programs. The honor marked the ninth consecutive semester in which the team had been ranked in the top-10 nationally. In 2005-2006, the Sarasota, Fla., native guided the Bulldogs to a superb 12-3 record en route to capturing their third straight NEC conference championship. The Bulldogs came back from a day-one deficit to take the championships by more than 100 points. GWU had nine student-athletes named to the all-conference team while once again for the third straight year Simpson was named the NEC’s Coach of the Year. For the second straight season, the Bulldogs won eight overall conference titles, as Wilson won the 100 free and 200 free, Taylor Simpson took first in the 200 IM and 200 breast, Whitney Hooley nabbed first in 100 back and Heather Roka won the 1650 free. Gardner-Webb also won two relay titles, with its 400 and 800 free relay units touching the wall first. Wilson became the first-ever swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships in GWU’s Division I history. She earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 200 free and had a time good enough to make her an Olympic trial quailifier in the 100 free at the summer USS Nationals. Once again, the Lady Bulldogs excelled outside the pool in 2005-06, as GWU placed 14 student-athletes on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. For the second consecutive year Simpson was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for the sport of women’s swimming, and was honored by the ESPN The Magazine as a member of the Academic All-America Women’s At-Large first team and the All-District Women’s At-Large Team. The College Swim Coaches of America Association honored the Lady Bulldogs’ team by naming them as an Academic All-America Team. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the nation among all Division I Women’s Swimming programs. The Bulldogs had perhaps their best season ever in 2004-05 as they turned in a 15-2 record and won their second conference championship in as many years. In only their second season as an associate member of the Northeast Conference, Gardner-Webb led the NEC Championships from day one, and saw nine student-athletes named all-conference in 2003-04. Simpson was named the NEC’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. GWU won eight conference titles along the way, with Wilson winning

the 100 free and 200 free, Simpson winning the 200 IM and 400 IM, and Roka winning the 500 free. Gardner-Webb also won a trio of relay titles, with its 200, 400, and 800 free relay squads taking conference crowns. As has become customary, Simpson’s team was also dominant in the classroom, as nine student-athletes earned spots on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. Simpson, with senior standing in the classroom, was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for the sport of women’s swimming, and the team as a whole was first in the nation in GPA among all Academic All-America teams named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The 2003-04 squad posted a 10-4 record on the season and won the NEC Conference Championship in its first season in the league, while the 2002-03 squad posted 12 wins to match which at the time was the school record for single-season victories, and turned in a second-place finish at the Southern States Conference Championships in its final season of competition in the league. Gardner-Webb had five student-athletes earn all-conference accolades and set a school record for academic all-conference performers with an astonishing 17. Cheryl Horne and Simpson each won individual conference titles, with Horne taking both the 50 free and 100 free and Simpson claiming the 400 IM. In the team’s first year of existence, 1999-2000, the rookie coach took a squad of only four girls and turned in a 9-1 record for a stellar inaugural year. Gardner-Webb came in eighth at the Southern States Conference meet and had freshmen Melissa Smith and Horne named to the all-conference squad. At the NCAA Division II Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., the Lady Bulldogs placed 14th out of 29 teams, highlighted by Smith claiming the national championship in the 1650 free. The freshman’s winning time of 17:05.75 brought the program its first NCAA title just months after its inception. Gardner-Webb made the jump to Division I athletics the following year, but Simpson’s squad was up to the challenge. The Lady Bulldogs came in fourth at the Southern States Conference meet in 2000-01, again getting an all-conference year from Horne. In its first year of competition at the Eastern College Athletic Conference meet, GWU placed 19th and had seven swimmers named All-ECAC. Katie Alford, Megan Campbell, Sarah Fair and Horne all garnered the honor for the 800 freestyle relay, while Hamilton, Smith and Becky Henninger were tabbed for individual events. In 2001-02, Simpson guided Gardner-Webb to a 12-5 record and a thirdplace finish at the Southern States Conference meet. Horne again took home all-conference honors, and was joined by first-time honorees Hamilton and Chester. The Lady Bulldogs improved dramatically on the previous year’s showing at the ECAC meet, coming in 11th and placing eight members on the All-ECAC squad. Five relay squads earned the distinction, while Chester, Hamilton, Horne and Smith all took individual honors. The 2001-02 squad also excelled in the classroom, earning CSCAA Academic All-American team honors. Simpson earned his stripes at the club and high school levels before moving to GWU for his first collegiate head-coaching job. Prior to his arrival, he coached the swim team at Venice High School. There, he guided Venice to its first-ever district title and produced a high school All-American and several all-state honorees. Before his stint at Venice High School, Simpson was making a name for himself on the club circuit, coaching nationally ranked teams in Ohio, Illinois and Florida. His Sarasota team took four state championships and placed second at the YMCA National Championships. Simpson’s 1985 Jolliet, Ill., squad also took second at the YMCA National Championships, taking home 13 individual national titles. That team turned out five senior national finalists and three Olympic trial qualifiers, in addition to setting seven national records. A 1980 graduate of Florida State University, Simpson transferred there from the University of Houston prior to his senior year. A swimmer at Houston, Simpson qualified for the NCAA Division I nationals his sophomore year. Simpson, 52, resides in Boiling Springs with his wife, Kathi. The Simpsons have four children – Taylor (25), Saxon (20), Logan (19), and Garrett (13).

Looking Back 2008-2009 CCSA - 4th place

2007-2008 CCSA - 3rd place

The second season in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association was another successful one for the Bulldogs, as the team looked to build upon its performance in the previous season. The Bulldogs began the season at the Christian College Invite, an exhibition event in which the Bulldogs were stellar, and then kicked off the dual meet part of the season with a 83-32 victory over North Carolina A&T. After this victory, the Bulldogs went on to win against VMI, American, Howard, North Carolina A&T, and Georgia Southern to extend its season-opening win streak to six. The win against Georgia Southern was the first time the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Cougars. The team then competed in the Davidson Invitational, where it came in second overall. The Bulldogs then lost its following two meets to Duke and Davidson, before rebounding to defeat College of Charleston and Campbell to finish the dual meet part of the season with a 8-2 record. The team then went to the CCSA Championships, where they finished fourth overall. Junior Corey Hughey was conference champion in the 100 back, timing in at 54.95, which set a CCSA conference record. Only losing a small amount of seniors, and adding new talent with a stellar recruiting class, look for the Bulldogs to continue to have success in 2009-10 and contend for the coveted CCSA title.

In what some consider to have been a rebuilding year after having to replace All-American Terra Wilson, head coach Mike Simpson may have done the best coaching job of his time at Gardner-Webb during the 200708 season. The season was one with many new faces, which went along perfectly for the theme as the Bulldogs entered a newly formed conference – the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. For the first time since the 2002-2003 season, GWU did not win a conference title. However, despite the youth, the squad posted not only some of the best times in the conference, but also the program’s history. Whitney Hooley and Stepheni Stadnik each won individual conference titles while the 200-medley relay team consisting of Hooley, Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Corey Hughey powered home a conference title in a school-record time of 1:46.10. The team finished third overall and was not far away from first place – even without a diving team (as diving was factored into the scoring). Heading into the conference meet, some of the top performances of the season were by GWU student-athletes. The top performances enabled the Bulldogs to win their first nine dual meets of the season, downing CCSA foes Radford, Howard, Davidson and the College of Charleston along the way. For the year, GWU finished 13-6 overall, marking the seventh consecutive season the program had reached double figures in wins. The 13 wins also marked the second-most victories in a single year in the program’s history. Stadnik posted the program’s best mark in the 100 breast (1:05.54) while 2008-09 returners Victoria Bryant, Elizabeth Ketterer, Sarah Steadman and Rachel Warkentin all recorded times that were good enough to be in GWU’s top-10 list in multiple events. Although the Bulldogs will lose several talented swimmers due to graduation, the superb ability from this year’s underclassmen should translate into success in the pool for GWU’s second season in the CCSA.

Looking Back 2006-2007 Northeast Conference - 1st place NCAA - 30th place The Gardner-Webb swim team not only ended its last season in the NEC with a fourth straight conference title, but also had a remarkable regular-season campaign that saw the squad garner a 12-4 mark against strong competition. Despite winning their fourth title, the accomplishments of the team, which were many during the 2006-07 season, may be overshadowed by the accomplishments of Terra Wilson. After winning the NEC’s Most Outstanding Swimmer award, Wilson went on to earn AllAmerica honors at the NCAA Championships. Her time of 1:45.40 in the 200 free put her sixth. Wilson touched the wall in the 100 free in a mere 49.03, earning honorable mention All-America accolades. For the second straight season, she was also named to the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All-America Team. However, head coach Mike Simpson’s team ran much deeper than just one person. After stumbling to a 1-3 start, the Bulldogs seven straight wins to bolster their record to 8-3. In the midst of the run, GWU also took home the Davidson Invitational title, defeating Davidson, North Florida and the College of Charleston. Simpson’s squad assured itself that there was no chance for an upset, winning by 218 points over the second-place team. Earlier in the season, the College of Charleston had given the Bulldogs their third loss by a mere six points. After a close loss at Clemson, GWU reeled off four more wins to complete the 12-4 campaign. At the NEC Championships, the Bulldogs derailed the other 13 teams, including second-place Georgia Southern, compiling an astonishing 735 points to 610 for the runner-up. En route to the title, Simpson was again named NEC Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive time. Ten student-athletes earned all-NEC honors while establishing five school and conference times. Simpson’s team was just as solid out of the pool as they were in it. In addition to 11 making the NEC honor roll, the team as a whole finished 10th nationally in terms of team GPA.

2005-2006 Northeast Conference - 1st place The 2005-06 season was an impressive one for the Bulldogs as they turned in a 12-3 record and a brief stint in the top-25 Division I Mid-Major Poll en route to capturing its third straight NEC conference championship. The Bulldogs opened up their 2005-06 season with a perfect 6-0 record for October. GWU defeated Davidson, Wingate, South Carolina, College of Charleston, Radford and Wingate in their first three dual meets. GWU went on to finish their regular season by winning six of its final nine, with their three losses coming by way of UNC-Wilmington, East Carolina and Clemson. The ‘Dogs scored victories over Marshall, Central Conneticut State, Wagner, Wingate, Georgia Southern and North Carolina A&T. GWU made history in November, as for the first time in the programs existence, the Bulldogs to split squads to compete at two invitational meets. The Lady Bulldogs competed in both the Davidson Invitational and the Georgia Tech Invitational, with both squads finishing in the top 10, as they took fifth-place at Davidson and seventh overall at the Georgia Tech Invite. At the NEC Championship meet, the Bulldogs came back from a day-one deficit to take the championships by a total of more than 100 points. GWU had nine student-athletes named to the all-conference team in 2005-06, while once again for the third straight year Simpson was named the NEC’s Coach of the Year. For the second straight season, the Bulldogs won eight conference titles, as Terra Wilson won the 100 free and 200 free, Taylor Simpson took first in the 200 IM and 200 breast, Whitney Hooley taking first in 100 back and Heather Roka who won the 1650 free. Gardner-Webb also won two relay titles, with its 400 and 800 free relay squads touching the wall in firsts and winning the conference titles. Wilson became the first ever swimmer to compete at the Division I NCAA Championships. She was an NCAA Honorable Mention AllAmerican in the 200 free. Once again, the Lady Bulldogs excelled outside the pool in 200506, as GWU placed 14 student-athletes on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. For the second consecutive year, Simpson, was named the NEC Scholar Athlete for the sport of women’s swimming and was honored by the ESPN The Magazine as a member of the Academic All-America Women’s At-Large first team and the All-District Women’s At-Large Team. As a program, the College Swim Coaches of America Association honored the Lady Bulldogs by being named as an Academic All-America Team. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the nation among all Division I Women’s Swimming programs, making it the fifth-straight semester that the Lady Bulldogs have finished in the top-five nationally.

Looking Back 2004-05 Northeast Conference - 1st place The Bulldogs successfully defended their Northeast Conference crown in 2004-05, increasing their lead every day at the NEC Championships and cruised to their second straight team title. Gardner-Webb won a school-record five individual titles and three relay titles on the weekend, while head coach Mike Simpson repeated as NEC Coach of the Year. Junior Taylor Simpson had a breakout meet, winning both the 200 IM and the 400 IM, as well as swimming the final legs on GWU’s winning 200 free, 400 free and 800 free relay teams. Sophomore Terra Wilson also turned in several dominating performances, as she defended her crowns in the 100 and 200 free with NCAA provisional times in both. She was also on the GWU’s three winning relays. Freshman Heather Roka also picked up a win in the 500 free, while Kathryn Williams, Whitney Hooley, Grace Whiteside and Samantha Lehman all took part in at least one winning relay. In total, GardnerWebb had 10 student-athletes reach all-NEC status and set six new NEC records. Gardner-Webb was just as dominant throughout the regular season, as the Bulldogs posted a 15-2 mark to surpass the school record for wins, with the only losses coming at the hands of ACC opponents NC State and Clemson. GWU had three swimmers earn NEC Athlete-of-the-Week recognition over the course of the season, with Wilson, Simpson and Roka all taking the honor at some point during the year. The Bulldogs also excelled in the classroom yet again, putting nine members on the NEC Academic Honor Roll. Simpson was named the NEC’s Scholar Athlete, and the team as a whole had the best GPA in the nation in the spring, earning GWU Academic All-American status from the CSCAA and marking the third and fourth semester in a row in which Gardner-Webb has finished in the top five among Division I programs. GWU continued to rewrite its record book as 15 records were set during the year.

2003-2004 Northeast Conference - 1st place National Independent Conference - 5th place Gardner-Webb served notice early in its tenure in the Northeast Conference that it would be a force to be reckoned with. The Bulldogs burst onto the scene in the NEC, which GWU joined as an associate member after the dissolution of the Southern States Conference, and won the league championship in their first season in the conference. GWU smashed school and NEC records along the way, and turned in several dominating performances at the league championships. In leading the Bulldogs to the NEC title, head coach Mike Simpson was named the league’s Coach of the Year by his coaching peers. Facing one of its toughest schedules to date, Gardner-Webb posted a 10-4 dual meet record on the year, and earned a No. 15 national ranking in CollegeSwimming.com‘s Division I Mid-Major Poll. Freshman sensation Terra Wilson opened her career in style, breaking three school records in her first collegiate meet and setting the tone for an unprecedented rookie campaign that saw her named GWU’s Female Athlete of the Year. After winning five NEC titles at the league championships, Wilson was named the meet’s Outstanding Swimmer and Rookie of the Meet. Wilson took titles in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 medley relay and 800 free relay, and set eight school records and four NEC records on the weekend. Senior Kourtney Hamilton closed her career on a high note, winning her first conference title with a victory in the 200 breast. Joining Wilson and Hamilton on the all-conference squad were Taylor Simpson (three top-three finishes), Lisa Fry (two top-three finishes) and Samantha Lehman (third in the 1650 free) as well as Jennifer Chester, Stephanie Crawford, Jessica Mischel and Kathryn Williams, who earned spots for their strong relay performances. Chester was named the NEC’s Scholar Athlete for women’s swimming on the year while Fry, Wilson and Simpson all earned NEC Athlete-of-the-Week honors during the season. GWU also took a handful of swimmers to the National Independent Conference Championships where Wilson won both the 100 and 200 free.

2002-2003 Southern States Conference - 2nd place

The momentum for the Gardner-Webb swimming program continued unabated in 2002-03 as the Bulldogs matched the school record for single-season wins and posted their best finish to date at the Southern States Conference Championships. After an 1-4 start to the season that included a pair of losses to ACC schools, Gardner-Webb was nearly unstoppable for the rest of the season, rattling off an 11-2 record on their way to finishing the season with a 12-6 mark. The regular season was prelude to the conference championships however, and Gardner-Webb responded with a second-place showing at the SSC meet in Radford, Va. GWU got an outstanding showing from senior Cheryl Horne, who won league titles in the 50 free and 100 free for the first individual conference titles of her career. Horne set new school records in both events, breaking her own mark in winning the 50 free and surpassing her own school record in the prelims of the 100 free. The senior also set a new school record in the 100 butterfly on the second day of competition at the meet. With her stellar performances, Horne became the first swimmer in GWU history to earn all-conference honors all four years of her career. Horne had company on the all-conference team, as freshman Taylor Simpson made an impact in her first conference meet by winning the 400 IM in school-record time. In addition to knocking nearly four seconds off that school mark, Simpson smashed the GWU record in the 200 butterfly as well, taking 5.44 seconds off that standard to finish second in the event. Simpson rounded out her weekend with a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle. Jennifer Chester turned in a pair of all-conference performances with a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a third-place finish in the 400 IM, while Kourtney Hamilton twice earned allconference status as well, taking second in both the 100 breast and 200 breast. Freshman Samantha Lehman also earned a spot on the all-conference squad with her third-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, giving GWU five student-athletes on the all-conference team. As has become custom, GWU balanced its excellence in the pool with its domination in the classroom, putting 17 members on the academic all-conference squad.

2001-2002 Southern States Conference - 3rd place ECAC - 11th place

Gardner-Webb's swimming program continued to flourish in its third season of existence and one-upped itself yet again in 2001-02. The Bulldogs put together a record of 12-5, surpassing the school record for wins, and posted their best-ever showing at the Southern State Conference Championships with a third-place finish. GWU got its 12 dual-meet wins the hard way, taking on several tough programs throughout the year. The Bulldogs did battle with fellow SSC contenders College of Charleston, North Florida and Georgia Southern at various points in the season, as well as taking on UNC Wilmington and getting their first taste of an SEC opponent in South Carolina. At the Southern States Conference Championships in February, Gardner-Webb toppled the defending league champion, College of Charleston, posting a second-place finish in the final relay of the meet to vault past the Cougars from fourth place and take third overall. Freshman Jennifer Chester had an outstanding weekend for the Bulldogs, turning in three second-place finishes to earn allconference status. Chester was runner-up in the 500 free, the 200 IM and the 400 IM, clocking school-record times in the latter two events. Sophomore Kourtney Hamilton also earned all-conference accolades, as she took second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast, both in school-record times. Junior Cheryl Horne continued her impressive career with another all-conference season as she finished third in both the 100 free and 200 free. In total, Gardner-Webb broke 13 school records over the course of the SSC Championships. The Bulldogs had half of their 18-woman roster earn Academic All-SSC honors on the year. GWU again competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at the end of the season, and finished 11th in the 31team field. Hamilton had the Bulldogs’ highest finish with a fifth-place showing in the 200 breast, while Chester, Horne, Jennifer Bishop and Jessica Mischel combined to place sixth in the 400 free relay.

Looking Back

2000-2001 Southern States Conference - 4th place ECAC - 19th place

1999-2000 Southern States Conference - 8th place NCAA - 14th place

Gardner-Webb began the transition to NCAA Division I status in 2000 and the Bulldogs’ second-year swim team was up to the challenge. Now competing with a full complement of student-athletes, GWU put up a 6-5 dual meet record against a strong schedule featuring several Division I opponents. At the Southern States Conference Championships, GardnerWebb’s distance swimmers continued to assert themselves as forces to be reckoned with. GWU successfully defended its Southern States crowns in the 1650 free and 500 free in 2001, although the titles changed hands. Freshman Sarah Fair claimed both championships on the weekend, marking the second year in a row that the GWU distance squad had taken those events. Fair turned in a record-breaking performance in doing so, as she erased the oldest conference record with her time of 17:14.82 in the 1650. Now with a full roster at its disposal, Gardner-Webb was also able to fully compete in the relays, with one of its relay units claiming another conference title for GWU. Fair teamed with Cheryl Horne, Megan Campbell and Katie Alford to emerge victorious in the 800 free relay, doing so in a school-record time of 7:51.38. The title was the first in the careers of Horne, Campbell and Alford, and was the third of the weekend for Fair. Fair’s monster performance helped Gardner-Webb to a fourthplace finish in the conference, marking a dramatic improvement from its eighth-place showing the year before. Following the Southern States Conference Championships, GWU competed at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships against several of the best teams along the eastern seaboard. There, the Bulldogs turned in a 19th-place finish, with seven student-athletes earning All-ECAC honors. Alford, Campbell, Fair and Horne all took the distinction, as did Kourtney Hamilton, Becky Henninger and Melissa Smith. Fair and Hamilton shared team MVP honors on the season.

During the 1999-2000 school year, Gardner-Webb’s fledgling swimming program wasted little time in establishing credibility for itself, as freshman Melissa Smith won the NCAA Division II national title in the 1650 freestyle in March of 2000, capping the program’s first season of existence in style. From humble beginnings with a four-member squad, head coach Mike Simpson fashioned a dominant team out of a quartet of determined freshmen. Becky Henninger, Cheryl Horne and Bekah Wallace joined Smith as the first-ever GWU swim team, and Gardner-Webb bolted out to a 9-0 start on the season, with the first eight of those wins coming on the road. The Bulldogs christened the renovated Bost Pool on Jan. 15, 2000, handing rival Catawba its first dual-meet loss in four years. Gardner-Webb finished the season with a 9-1 dual record before turning heads at the Southern States Conference Championships in February. Despite its limited numbers, GWU came in eighth, with Smith winning conference titles in the 500 free and 1650 free. Horne was impressive in her own right, earning all-conference honors with third-place finishes in the 100 fly and the 50 free. The Bulldogs were far from done in their inaugural season, as Smith personally led Gardner-Webb to a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. The rookie from Clearwater, Fla., dominated the 1650 free, touching in 17:05.75 to set a school record that still stands. Smith crushed the field, winning by more than 10 seconds over her nearest competitor, to claim GardnerWebb’s first national championship just months after the program’s inception. The win made Smith a two-event All-American, as she had taken third place in the 500 free earlier in the meet.

Looking Back 2008-2009 CCSA - 3rd place The second season for the men’s swim team saw the team build upon its success from the team’s first season to reach new heights. The entire team from the previous season returned, along with several key newcomers that added to the team’s success. The team kicked off the 2008-09 campaign at the Christian College Invite, an exhibition event. The team then went on a three-meet win streak, defeating VMI, American, and Howard, giving the team its first ever 3-0 record. Following a 118-86 loss to Limestone, the Bulldogs competed in the Davidson Invitational, where the team finished third overall. The team faced tough competition following the Davidson Invitational, losing to Duke, Davidson, and College of Charleston to bring the team’s record to 3-4 overall. The Bulldogs finished its dual meet season against VMI on February 7, earning a 109-65 victory to finish the season with a .500 record, giving the team its best winning percentage ever. In the CCSA Championships, the Bulldogs finished third overall. Patrick Elerding brought home a conference championship in the 100 fly, touching the wall at 48.93, setting a new team record. With no seniors on the roster, the Bulldogs will be returning all members of the squad, along with another stellar recruiting class, look for the 2009-10 season to be even more successful for the men’s swim team and contend for the CCSA title.

2007-2008 CCSA - 3rd place The first-ever season for the men’s swim team will be a memorable one. It will be reflected upon from the first event that took place at the Limestone Relay Meet to the Adam Suggs winning the program’s first-ever conference title, helping the team finish third in the inaugural Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association conference championship. Virtually every time out, a school record was shattered or a student-athlete earned a top-10 time in the program’s history. Despite the records that were set and the times recorded, the team established the foundation for a tremendous team for several years to come. With only freshmen and sophomores on the team, the Bulldogs had to be one of the youngest teams – if not the youngest – in Division I. Although the team was young and lacked experience against older schools, the squad more than made up for it in talent. The raw talent that many on the team have was harnessed by head coach Mike Simpson and his superb staff, which allowed multiple student-athletes to reach the conference finals and earn allconference accolades. After dropping a tough 190-184 decision at Limestone to start the season, the young Bulldogs bounced back to dominate CCSA foe VMI the following weekend, taking down the Keydets by a 119-90 score. The victory was the first of a school-record threemeet win streak. Standing at 3-3 on Nov. 9 after a loss to Davidson, the Bulldogs finished second at the Wingate Invitational and were just a fraction out of second at the Davidson Invitational the next two weekends. GWU then rattled off an astounding 208-29 win over FAMU on Jan. 5, for what turned out to be the last dual-meet victory of the season for the team. However, that was in part because of its youth but also because GWU faced an extremely tough schedule. The Bulldogs showed no fear, challenging four Atlantic Coast Conference teams – NC State, Duke, Virginia and Clemson – over the last five dual meets in order to prepare for the CCSA meet while finishing with a dual meet mark of 4-8. With everyone returning, the team will look to build off its momentum from the CCSA meet. With more depth next year thanks to a solid recruiting class, the Bulldogs will be on their way to the top of the league very soon.

Administration Dr. A Frank Bonner Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fifth year as the president of GardnerWebb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005.

Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Administration Chuck Burch

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen acrossthe-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 19911997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

Pam Scruggs

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 30th year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scruggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Scruggs was recently inducted into the Gardner-Webb athletics Hall of Fame for her meritorious service to the program. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie.
