GWU PRESIDENT
2009-10 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fifth year as the president of GardnerWebb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to GardnerWebb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualified candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, officially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.
RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS
VP FOR ATHLETICS Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ studentathletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 ASun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (19841988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at GardnerWebb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).
Pam Scruggs ASSOCIATE AD/SWA Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 30th year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scurggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie.

ATHLETIC TRAINING
ATHLETIC TRAINING An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAAHEP, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certification to become Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

GWU STRENGTH & CONDITIONING GWU STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PHILOSOPHY In today’s world of collegiate athletics, the strength and conditioning program has become one of the most vital aspects in the development of the complete student-athlete. The mission and philosophy of the Gardner-Webb University Strength and Conditioning Program is based on several key elements of development. We are committed to: * Furthering the commitment to excellence * Enhancing athleticism * Development of: Strength, Power, SAQ (speed/agility/quickness), Mobility/Flexibility, Energy System Training, Mental Toughness * Building team unity and self discipline * Injury prevention training * Promoting proper nutrition along with rest and recovery * Developing a strong work ethic that the student-athlete takes with them in life after graduation When designing the Gardner-Webb Strength and Conditioning Program, the strength staff incorporates training the total body utilizing various proven training techniques. These techniques range from traditional lifting to training “outside the box”. In order to keep the athlete from adapting to the same training stimulus, causing a plateau effect, the program is changed every 4-6 weeks. The strength staff stays current in their profession in order to provide the best program for the student-athlete to improve their performance and each team receives a program that is designed to strengthen the movements involved in their particular sport. The strength staff works closely with the athletic training staff in the injury rehab process with the joint goal of getting the student-athlete back into competition. At the foundation of the Gardner-Webb University Strength Staff philosophy lays the desire to constantly improve the program for our student-athletes and athletic teams.

PAUL PORTER ARENA The home of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 3,500-seat Paul Porter Arena is one of the most intimidating venues in the Big South Conference - with fan support rattling the rafters regularly. Located inside the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, Paul Porter Arena saw the Lady Bulldogs post a school-record 11-2 mark at home in the 2008-09 season. Gardner-Webb’s home court advantage is helped tremendously by “The Dawg Pound,” which is a student group that provides plenty of noise and enthusiasm on game nights.

Head coach Rick Reeves is in his sixth season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb University Lady Bulldog basketball program. Reeves came to Boiling Springs after spending five seasons as the head women’s coach at Southern Miss. Reeves, who has a tremendous history of rebuilding Division I programs during his 25 years of collegiate coaching, has taken his teams to the postseason four times at the Division I level – including three-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament at Liberty University (1997-1999) before taking over the reigns at Southern Miss prior to the 1999-2000 season. Over the last three seasons, Reeves has arguably done his best coaching jobs. In 2008-09, the Bulldogs set a new bar for women’s basketball at Gardner-Webb in only its first year as members of the Big South Conference. Coach Reeves’ squad, which did not have a single senior on the roster, advanced all the way to the Big South Championship title game in only its first year in the League. The 2008-09 season was a special one for not only Coach Reeves, but for the Bulldogs women’s basketball program in a number of different ways. The 17 wins is the most wins in one season that the women’s basketball program has had since moving to the NCAA Division I in 2000-01. Gardner-Webb won 11 home games, the most home wins in one season since moving to the NCAA Division I, and posted a nine-game home winning streak, the longest in the program’s history. The historical season doesn’t stop there, as in the Bulldogs first home game of the season GWU recorded the program’s largest margin of victory in the 48-point win over UVA-Wise and broke three school records in the process. GWU won its first ever Big South Conference game on January 17, defeating Charleston Southern 60-50 at home. The Bulldogs also posted its first ever win over Charleston Southern (Jan. 17). In 2008-09 Gardner-Webb posted an 8-5 non-conference record, the first time that it has posted a winning non-conference record since moving to NCAA Division I. The eight nonconference wins were the most non-conference wins in Division I history. GWU’s road win over Winthrop on February 23, was the largest come from behind victory in its history, as the Bulldogs erased a 15 point
second half deficit to win 65-62. Individual history was made in 2008-09, as Head Coach Rick Reeves’ recorded his 70th career Big South Conference win with the win over UNC Asheville on February 16, and currently sits with 71 conference victories. Junior Margaret Roundtree surpassed the 500-rebound plateau in the same game, a win over UNC Asheville, becoming only the fourth player to surpass 500 rebounds in GWU’s Division I history.
RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS
2005-06 campaign senior Sequenta Blackman and junior Shameka Smith were voted onto the preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team. It marked the first time that a GWU player had been selected for such a preseason honor. The two were also the only set of teammates to make the list. Off the court, the Bulldogs worked just as hard as they did on the court. Reeves and his staff placed six student-athletes on the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team after his first year, 11 on the team during the 2005-06 season and six in 2007-08. The Bulldogs also had redshirtjunior Laura Povilonyte earn a spot on the Big South Conference All-Academic team in 2008-09 and had eight others named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. As a testament to Reeves’ positive influence as a coach on the collegiate level, 80 former players have gone into the coaching ranks following graduation – with those players
HEAD COACH RICK REEVES
During the 2007-2008 year, he had one of the youngest Division I programs in the NCAA - having just one senior while everyone else was a freshman or sophomore. However, Reeves led the young Bulldogs to their highest seed ever in the A-Sun Championship - a No. 3. seed. Reeves guided the team to a .500 mark in league play while also amassing a schoolrecord six consecutive wins during the year. Despite a tough non-conference slate, Reeves managed to produce the most wins in the Division I era prior to the start of the conference schedule. Yet perhaps his best coaching job at GWU was during the 2006-2007 season. Picked to finish second in the league in the preseason poll, the squad lost two starters and its sixth man. However, Reeves guided the team to a 10-8 A-Sun mark, earning the No. 4 seed in the tournament where the team advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Bulldogs also posted their best home record in Division I history at that time, garnering a 10-2 mark in Paul Porter Arena. On Feb. 15, a 61-47 victory over Stetson provided Reeves with his 300th career win. During his second season with the Bulldogs, Reeves guided his team to a 14win season, bettering his first-year record at Gardner-Webb by five wins. By finishing 11-9 in conference play, the Bulldogs earned a No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. After knocking off Campbell in the quarterfinals, Reeves led his team past No. 1 seed Belmont in the semifinals before falling to the No. 2 seed in the championship game. In his first year as the head coach at Gardner-Webb, Reeves guided his squad to a nine-win season, a mark that proved to be four wins more than GWU posted in each of the previous two seasons. Under his tutelage, the Lady Bulldogs have shown steady improvement as a team as well as on an individual basis. Heading into the
on coaching staffs in the SEC, Big South, Conference USA, Missouri Valley, MAC and Southern Conference, among others. Prior to his arrival at Southern Miss, Reeves was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year three times and State Coach of the Year once during his time directing the Flames’ program in Lynchburg, Va. In 199798, he directed Liberty to an amazing 28-0 record heading into the NCAA Tournament – including a Big South Tournament title and regular season championship. That team finished with a 28-1 mark, with the lone loss coming at the hands of eventual national champion Tennessee in the NCAA first round. Liberty posted a phenomenal 71-16 combined record during Reeves’ final three seasons at the school, with three-straight trips to the NCAA’s Big Dance. Reeves, a 1981 graduate of Indiana State University, earned a master’s degree from Western Kentucky in 1985. He landed his first collegiate head coaching position at Brescia (Ky.) College in 1985, and was the school’s first head women’s basketball coach, starting the program from scratch with 15 freshmen on his roster. From there Reeves went to Cumberland (Tenn.) University in 1986, and led the team to three top-20 finishes at the NAIA level before moving on to an assistant’s position at the University of Florida in 1989-90. Reeves is married to the former Ramona Parnell of Columbia, Ky. The couple has two daughters, Kim Clark and Krystal ReevesEvans, who are both assistant coaches for Reeves at GWU, and three granddaughters, Grace Ann Clark, born July 26, 2003, Kalyn Lydia Clack, born May 2, 2007 and Braylee Reeves Evans, born December 4, 2008.

Assistant Coach Kim Clark is entering her sixth year on the Gardner-Webb University women’s basketball staff. Clark joined the staff in May of 2004 and is responsible for coaching the post players and serving as GWU’s recruiting coordinator, bringing in a nationally ranked freshman class in 2007-08. During her time at Gardner-Webb the Bulldogs have continued to improve, going from five wins in 2003-04, the year prior to Coach Clark’s arrival, to a record-high 17 wins in 200809. Under the direction of Clark, Laura Povilonyte and Margaret Roundtree were both named to the Big South Second-Team All-Conference in 2008-09, while Roundtree was also named to the Big South Championship All-Tournament Team. Roundtree also eclipsed the 500 career rebound plateau in 2008-09, becoming only the fourth Bulldog player to surprise the 500 career rebound mark in GWU women’s basketball NCAA Division I history. In 2008-09, Roundtree shot a stellar 48.3 percent from the field, while leading the Bulldogs with 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore LaTroya Pope saw her points per game average more than double and her rebound per game average triple under the guidance of Coach Clark. In 2007-08, during her sophomore season, Roundtree nearly tripled her points per game average from her rookie campaign. Clark also helped redshirt-senior LaToya Carter to her best numbers ever across the board, including career highs in points, points per game, rebounds and rebounds per game. Carter, who entered the season as a career 34 percent field goal shooter, led the team by hitting a school-record 54.5 percent of her shots. During the 2006-07 season, former GWU standout Brittany Harmon not only led the Atlantic Sun in blocks per game during the conference season, but also finished in the top 20 nationally, averaging 2.7 blocks per game. Harmon ended her career as the school’s all-time leader with 247 blocks. For her efforts, Harmon was named the A-Sun’s Defensive Player of the Year, which was the first and only time a GWU student-athlete has won the award. Clark also coached former standout Shameka Smith. Smith completed her collegiate career by scoring 1,136 points, which is the third most in the program’s history. She also left as the school’s all-time career leader in rebounds, grabbing 992 in her time at GWU.
Prior to coming on board at Gardner-Webb, Clark spent two years as a color analyst for the University of Southern Mississippi ISP Sports Network. Clark also served as an administrative assistant for coach Rick Reeves’ Lady Eagles while she worked on her master’s degree at Southern Miss. Clark was a three-year letterwinner at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., playing for Reeves for two years. There, she helped guide the Flames to three straight Big South Conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Clark, a shooting guard, helped Liberty to a 28-0 record heading into the 1998 NCAA Tournament, where the Flames fell to top-seeded and eventual champion Tennessee. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree from Liberty in 2000, with a major in sports management. She completed work on her master’s in sports administration from Southern Miss in 2002. Clark is married to Matt Clark. The couple has a six-year-old daughter, Grace Ann, who was born July 26, 2003. Their second child, Kalyn Lydia, was born May 2, 2007.

2009-10 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
SEASON PREVIEW
200910 SEASON PREVIEW Two more points. Just two more points. That is the phrase that has been and will be repeated all season long, as the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team saw its historical 2008-09 season come to an end, falling to the Liberty Lady Flames by only one point in the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women’s Basketball Championship game. The 2009-10 team return all but two players from its 2008-09 squad that advanced all the way to the Big South Conference tournament championship game as the No. 6 seed in only its first year as members of the League. Coach Rick Reeves’ and his squad will look to improve on its historical season a year ago that saw record numbers in total wins with 17, home wins with 11, and non-conference wins with eight.
GUARDS The Lady Bulldogs are both solid and deep at the guard positions and will be led by junior Dominique Hudson. Hudson, who was named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Team this season, was huge in the Lady Bulldogs tournament run last season where she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Hudson, who averaged 11 points and 4.8 assists per game last season, is the catalyst of the GWU offense and has improved dramatically in each of her first two years at Gardner-Webb. Senior Meranda Burnett provides a ton of experience in the GWU backcourt, as she has played in over 94 games in her career at GardnerWebb. Burnett, who played all 120 minutes of the Lady Bulldogs three games in the Big South Conference tournament a year ago, is third alltime in career assists at GWU heading into the season and is vital in both the execution and running of the Lady Bulldog offense. Also returning in the backcourt for the Lady Bulldogs is junior Courtney Epps, who came on strong toward the end of last season, scoring a career-high 21 points in the championship game against Liberty. Epps, who is a defensive specialist, provides the Lady Bulldogs with an outside threat, as she connected on 38.2 percent of her threepoint attempts last season. Depth at the guard positions will come from two returners in Monique Hudson and Teonika Webb and a newcomer in freshman Brianna Dillard. Hudson, who missed most of last season due to an injury,
28
brings both quickness and pure determination to the Lady Bulldogs on both sides of the court. Hudson, who was the 2007-08 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year, is a thief on the defensive end for the Lady Bulldogs collecting 67 steals over 40 games of action. Hudson is a threat on the offensive end, as she is a slasher that can put the ball on the ground and beat her defenders off the dribble. Webb, who had a very solid freshman season before suffering a season ending injury, will also see time at the guard spot, as the sophomore can score, defend and rebound. Webb, who was named the New Balance Big South Freshman of the Week once last season, will bring energy on both ends of the court and provide a solid free throw shooter to the Lady Bulldogs down the stretch, shooting 90 percent from the charity stripe a year ago. Dillard, a freshman from Glen Allen, Va., is another guard that can score, rebound and defend, as she posted 14 double-doubles as a junior and averaged a double-double of 13.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
FORWARDS Size is not a concern at all for the Lady Bulldogs in 2009-10, as Coach Reeves’ has five forwards that are all 5-10 or taller. Senior Margaret Roundtree, who was named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Team this season, leads the group of forwards having led the team in both scoring and rebounding last season. Roundtree, who was also named Second-Team All-Conference and to the Big South Conference All-Tournament Team a year ago, will look to finish her career at Gardner-Webb on a high note, as she led the Lady Bulldogs with 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season. Junior LaTroya Pope will compete for a starting position at a forward position from day one, having started 27 games last season for Coach Reeves. Pope, who led the Lady Bulldogs with 40 blocks last season, is a force both defensively and on the boards as she was second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game and third in steals with 35 on the season. Pope, who plays much larger than her 5-10 frame, more than doubled her points and rebounds per game average from her freshman season and will look to continue to be a force down low for the Lady Bulldogs on both ends of the court in 2009-10.
RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS
200910 SEASON PREVIEW
CENTERS In the middle the Lady Bulldogs have both depth and experience, as redshirt-senior Sherika McLean, sophomore Breynna Winkler and junior transfer Sandra Vaitkute all bring size and strength to an already athletic and big front court. McLean, who played in all 32 games last season, provides an inside/ outside threat for the Lady Bulldogs, as she is able to knock down the jumper from 15 feet and beyond. Winkler, who saw limited action last season as a freshman, returns with more experience and understanding of not only the GWU offense, but of the college game. Winkler is a force on the boards and can prove to be a tough challenge for a number of teams on the offensive end, as she can use both her size and strength to finish down low, yet can also step out to 10-15 feet and knock down the jumper. Junior transfer Vaitkute sat out all last season due to the NCAA Division I transfer rules and is ready to begin her playing career at Gardner-Webb. Vaitkute, who saw playing time at Maine prior to coming to GWU, will be a force on both ends of the floor for the Lady Bulldogs, causing match-up problems due to her size. Vaitkute has very good hands and is a strong finisher around the basket for the Lady Bulldogs. And like both McLean and Winkler, Vaitkute is more than capable of stepping out and knocking down the mid-range jumper.
SCHEDULE The slate in 2009-10 for the Lady Bulldogs is not an easy one, as Coach Reeves has loaded the schedule with challenging non-conference games on top of an already tough Big South conference schedule. The non-conference schedule for GWU includes home games against Houston (Nov. 13), Appalachian State (Nov. 24), Wofford (Dec. 1) and East Carolina (Dec. 5). However, the Lady Bulldogs biggest challenges will come on the road, as GWU will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina on December 13, and then will head to West Lafayette, Indiana to face off with the Purdue Boilermakers on December 21. Gardner-Webb will compete at the Lancer Weekend Classic hosted by Longwood University on November 28-29, where they will take on Morehead State, who was picked first in the OVC this season, and Texas-Pan American. Conference play will begin for the Lady Bulldogs in January 2010, as GWU will open up at home with games against Liberty (Jan. 2), Radford (Jan. 4), UNC-Asheville (Jan.9) and High Point (Jan. 11). After three road games at Charleston Southern (Jan. 16), Winthrop (Jan. 23) and Presbyterian College (Jan. 25), Coach Reeves’ squad will return home to host Coastal Carolina on January 30 before hitting the road for four-straight conference games. In the Lady Bulldogs four-game road trip, GWU will play at Radford (Feb. 6), at Liberty (Feb. 8), at High Point (Feb. 13) and at UNCAsheville (Feb. 15). Gardner-Webb will then return to host Presbyterian College (Feb. 20), Winthrop (Feb. 22) and Charleston Southern (Feb. 27), before wrapping up its regular season slate at Coastal Carolina on March 5. The Lady Bulldogs will again look to make a run in the post-season conference tournament, as the 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament will be held on March 12-14 in High Point, N.C.
SEASON PREVIEW
A duo of newcomers will make up the depth at the forward spots for Reeves in 2009-10, as Erin Boggan and Cierra Harris will both compete for immediate playing time this season. Freshman Kim McKenney will have to take a medical-redshirt this season, having suffereing a seasonending knee injury in the preseason. Boggan brings both size and strength to the forward position for the Lady Bulldogs, while also showing a soft touch from outside. Like, Roundtree and Pope, Boggan is going to be a force on the boards, as she averaged over 11.8 rebounds per game as a senior at Danbury High School last season. As for the other two newcomers, Harris and McKenney, both provide length and athleticism to a very big GWU frontcourt, as both can shoot from outside and put the ball on the floor and drive strong to the basket.

200809 SEASON REVIEW
60
The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end on a missed last second shot in the Big South Conference Tournament Championship game, falling to the No. 1 seed Liberty Flames 51-50. The Bulldogs made it to the Championship game in their first season as members of the League. Gardner-Webb finished the season 17-15 overall and 7-9 in the conference. The 2008-09 season was a special one for the Bulldogs in a number of different ways. First off, the Bulldogs made it to the Championship game in only its first year as a member of the Big South Conference. The 17 wins is the most wins in one season that the women’s basketball program has had since moving to the NCAA Division I in 2000-01. Gardner-Webb won 11 home games, the most home wins in one season since moving to the NCAA Division I and posted a nine-game home winning streak the longest in the program’s history. 17) and its first win over Presbyterian (Jan. 26) since moving to NCAA Division I. Gardner-Webb posted an 8-5 non-conference record, the first time that it has posted a winning non-conference record since moving to NCAA Division I. The eight non-conference wins were the most non-conference wins in its Division I history. GWU’s road win over Winthrop on February 23, was the largest come from behind victory in its history, as the Bulldogs erased a 15 point second half deficit to win 65-62. The 2008-09 season tipped off in Texas as the Bulldogs dropped its season opener 79-58 to the University of Houston, where Houston native Courtney Epps poured in a then career-high 16 points in the effort.
Yet the loss proved to be a good experience for the Bulldogs, as Gardner-Webb returned home to win its next four games in dominating fashion. In its first win of the year, a 97-49 home victory over UVA-Wise, the Bulldogs set a handful of school records including the largest win in the program’s history. In the Bulldogs next three-games, Coach Reeves’ squad defeated North Carolina Central, South Carolina State and Tennessee Temple to move to 4-1 on the season. However, the Bulldogs next six games were away from the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena, as the young Gardner-Webb squad struggled on the road at the beginning of the season. Over the six game road trip the Bulldogs posted a 2-4 record, picking up wins at WinstonSalem State, 64-55, and against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb, 66-64, in the Dayton Flyer Classic. With a 6-5 record heading into the new year, the Bulldogs provided fireworks on New Year’s Day, defeating Montreat College 85-57 in Boiling Springs, N.C. With the win, the Bulldogs extended its home winning streak to five games and posted a strong performance to kick off the new year before heading into its first ever Big South Conference game. On January 3, 2009, the Bulldogs made history as the program played in its first ever Big South Conference game, traveling to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the defending conference champions in the Liberty Lady Flames. Coach Reeves, who had coached at Liberty from 1990-1999, had his homecoming spoiled as the Bulldogs struggled from the floor offensively in its conference opener, ultimately falling 55-42. Gardner-Webb continued its tough conference slate with the next three conference games coming on the road at Radford, at UNC Asheville and at High Point. The Bulldogs saw a four-point halftime lead disappear in the 82-74 loss to Radford on January 5, and struggled from the opening tip to score points in the 67-59 loss to UNC Asheville on January 10. The Bulldogs fell to 0-4 in the conference with a 55-44 loss to High Point on January 12, again a road contest in which the young Bulldog team failed to execute efficiently on the offensive end. Sitting at 7-9 and 0-4 in the Big South, Coach Reeves and his staff did not panic but rather regrouped, as the Bulldogs returned home for its next three games.
RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS
200809 SEASON REVIEW with games at Winthrop and Charleston Southern and at home against Coastal Carolina. In the game at Winthrop on February 23, the Bulldogs trailed for the majority of the first 30 minutes of play and found themselves down by 15 with a little over 10 minutes to go in the contest. The Bulldogs raced back to erase the 15 point second half deficit and watched an Eagles last second shot go off the left side of the rim to give the Bulldogs the 65-62 road conference win. The win was the Bulldogs first conference road win of the season and is the largest comeback win by a Bulldogs team since moving to NCAA Division I. However, the short-handed Bulldogs dropped its last two games of the regular season, falling 80-68 at Charleston Southern and 60-57 in the home finale versus the Lady Chanticleers to finish the regular season at 15-14 overall and 7-9 in the conference. With its 7-9 conference record, the Bulldogs entered its first ever Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Championship as the No. 6 seed. In the first round, the Bulldogs knocked down 23-of-27 free throws and clamped down defensively to hold the No. 3 seed Radford Highlanders to 24.3 percent shooting from the floor en route to picking up the 61-50 win. After winning its first ever Big South Conference Championship tournament game, the Bulldogs continued its magical run, upsetting the tournament host and No. 2 seed High Point Panthers, 78-76, on two made free throws by guards Dominique Hudson and Meranda Burnett in the final 35 seconds of play. With the win the Bulldogs moved on to the Championship game in only its first year as Big South members and became the first No. 6 seed to reach the final game since UNC Asheville in 1998. In the Championship game on March 15, the Bulldogs gave the top-seeded Liberty Lady Flames a tough challenge for all 40 minutes of play, as Hudson’s last second shot attempt rolled off the left side of the rim to give the Lady Flames the 51-50 win. Junior Margaret Roundtree and redshirt-junior Laura Povilonyte were both named to the Second-Team All-Conference team, while Roundtree and Dominique Hudson both earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for their strong performances throughout the Bulldogs historical tournament run.
2008-09 SEASON REVIEW
In the first home Big South Conference game, the Bulldogs made history as GWU defeated Charleston Southern 60-50 to pick up its first ever conference win as members of the Big South. The Bulldogs carried over that momentum to defeat both Winthrop, 54-53, and Presbyterian, 56-48, over its next two home games, improving to 3-4 in conference play. Gardner-Webb then stepped out of conference play for the last time on January 28, as the Bulldogs hit 10 three-pointers and dominated the Appalachian State Mountaineers, winning on the road 77-62. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 8-5 in non-conference action on the year, the most non-conference wins a GWU team has had since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 2000-01. With an 11-9 overall record, the Bulldogs jumped back into conference play, falling at Coastal Carolina 70-54 on January 31. The loss snapped the Bulldogs winning streak at four games and left Coach Reeves’ squad winless on the road in conference play. After the Coastal Carolina loss, the Bulldogs returned home to defeat Radford 55-53, avenging an earlier season loss and stretching its home winning streak to nine-games on the season. However, only two days later, on February 9, the Bulldogs home winning streak was snapped, as the Liberty Lady Flames held off a feisty Gardner-Webb squad to win 63-60 and hand the Bulldogs its first home loss of the season. Yet the Bulldogs did not roll over and play dead, as Gardner-Webb answered with two straight home wins over High Point, 63-60, who was second in the League, and UNC Asheville, 74-61, who had defeated the Bulldogs earlier in the season. The win over UNC Asheville was a memorable one, as the win was Coach Reeves’ 70th career Big South Conference win. In the win, the Bulldogs Margaret Roundtree hauled in her 500th career rebound, becoming only the fifth GWU player to surpass the 500 career rebounding plateau since the Bulldogs move to Division I. Yet the high would not last long, as the Bulldogs suffered a major let down five days later, falling to the last-place Blue Hose of Presbyterian College 62-53. With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Bulldogs just hoped to have enough players dress out to finish the year, as Coach Reeves’ squad was hit hard by the injury bug as the season winded down

GWU RECORD BOOK
Throughout Gardner-Webb’s illustrious histroy, 13 women have reached a milestone that not many do - scoring 1,000 career points. Teammates Susan Bolt Briggs and Carolyn Dewberry were the first to score 1,000 points during their time in Boiling Springs. From 1988-1992, Fredia Lawrence lit up the scoreboard, setting the Bulldogs’ all-time scoring record at 2,201 points. Since the move to Division I, Casey Collins netted the most points for GWU, tallying 1,293 in her stellar career. Under head coach Rick Reeves, Sequenta Blackman tallied over 1,000 points for her career. Blackman, who graduated in May 2006, finished her career as the 11th-most productive scorer in Bulldogs’ history with 1,195 points. On Jan. 25, 2007, senior Shameka Smith netted her 1,000th career point. The Bessemer City, N.C., native finished with 1,136 points, which is good enough for 12th on the GWU alltime list.

2009-10 GARDNER-WEBB WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
GWU ALUMNI
GWU ALUMNI PERSPECTIVE I just want to let you know how proud I am of the flourishing Women’s Basketball program at Gardner-Webb University. Under Coach Reeves’ leadership and dedication, a brand new division one team and program have improved with each passing year. As an alumni of Gardner-Webb and a four-year member of the Lady Bulldogs team, I witnessed the fundraising efforts, recruiting of talented players whom are dedicated to the Lord and community support that Coach Reeves has helped to build. This has allowed Gardner-Webb to make the Atlantic Sun conference tournament three of the past four years, including a championship appearance that I was lucky enough to experience my senior year. I’m encouraged by the progress that’s been made in the program and hoping to open up the sports page someday soon and see that the Lady Bulldogs have defeated a big-time division I team like the men’s squad did against Kentucky during the 200708 season. Sincerely, Brooke Anderson
After a very dismal freshman season, I was very happy to be under the leadership of Coach Rick Reeves. When he took the job as head coach in 2004, Gardner-Webb Women’s Basketball soared to new heights. Under his leadership we raised money to remodel our locker room that once consisted of a tiny board and two benches. That following summer we were excited to start a new season with nice wooden lockers with storage space, carpet, vanity mirror, projector, and a film room. He felt that if we were going to be champions we had to act like it. Having a new locker room brought about a sense of appreciation for the program. Along with the championship mindset, Coach Reeves designed practice around developing skills and executing the game plan. He intensely quizzed us about different situations that may occur in the upcoming game to make sure we were mentally prepared. His motto was “basketball is 90% mental and 10% physical,” therefore he made sure we “thinkers” of the game and not robots looking to him to tell us our every move. He said when all else fails “just play basketball”. These strategies helped build confidence in ourselves and as a team. The belief that he had in us from the beginning renewed our minds and caused us to latch on to the “champion” mentality and go from the doormat of the league to a force to be reckoned with. Instead of fearing the competition, the competition feared us. We heard from everywhere in the league that playing Gardner-Webb was a big game. You had to bring your best game to beat us, and everyone knew that. We had a sense of pride and a little “swag” to ourselves. We played with such heart and determination-why? because we had a coach that believed in us and wanted to see this program succeed just as much as we did. How does a team go from being an “easy win” to a force to be reckoned with? How does a team who has never been to the conference tournament go three years in a row and get to the finals the first year and the semi-finals the last two years? If you were to ask us (team) if we ever thought we would have as much success as we had I do not think we could truthfully say yes. All of this was accomplished through great leadership, faith, determination, and hard work. I wish we could have won a championship-definitely since we were so close every year, but the legacy and foundation that the team of 2004-2007 laid for the future has bridged the gap between a mediocre team and a championship team. Coach Reeves was not just trying to sell us a dream as a new coach in 2004, yet he was trying to make that dream a reality. Every year we set a new record for the program and got closer to our dream. The dream has not yet been fulfilled, but it is only a matter of time before that championship banner is hanging from the rafters. I know with Coach Reeves’ hard work, faith, determination, and young talent...a championship is not to far away! I appreciate everything he has taught me on and off the court and know that the best is yet to come for Gardner-Webb Women’s Basketball Team! Sincerely, LaToya Carter

RUNNIN’ BULLDOGS
GWU ALUMNI PERSPECTIVE During my four years at Gardner-Webb University, I was a part of the Women’s Basketball Program. During those years, I went through many transitions and changes. My first three years, I went through three different coaches and was never actually coached by the coach who recruited me. As a player that was difficult to handle. Going through three coaches in four years that wanted different things from you as a player was definitely a challenge. Finally, some consistency came my junior year with the hire of Rick Reeves. Since then, Coach Reeves has gone on to build the program into a top competitor in the Atlantic Sun. His first year at GWU, we were biting at the heels of competing in the A-Sun Tournament. His second year (my senior year; 2006) we set school records and got to compete for the first time in GWU history in the A-Sun Tournament; where we competed in the championship game missing out on the NCAA Division I tournament with a loss to Florida Atlantic. Coach Reeves was a big part of how the program changed so drastically. He is an amazing coach that knows the game of basketball. His expertise was noticed by each component we played against. Each member of the Atlantic Sun conference changed the way they observed the GWU Women’s Basketball Program after Rick Reeves came into command. A type of respect was formed towards our program, something that was never there throughout the years prior. With the Reeves Family leading the way, I know that there is nothing but good things in the future for the GWU Women’s Basketball Program. They are dedicated to be successful and have the tools to make that happen quickly. Changing leagues is a great accomplishment for GardnerWebb University Athletics. The Big South Conference is a very respectable league with top notch programs that will help GWU develop into a prestige Athletic Program. Being in that conference is no “cup of tea” though. Each competition will be demanding and challenging but with the Reeves leadership, I know that GWU WBB will go forward with their success. They already have built a great foundation that has developed throughout the years into a very competitive Division I Women’s Basketball Program. I have all the respect in the world for Coach Reeves and his daughters and know that they will continue their success at Gardner-Webb University. They have come into GWU and changed things for the better and will continue to allow the women’s basketball program to thrive.
GWU ALUMNI
As an alumni of GardnerWebb University and a member of the Women’s Basketball team from 2001-2005 I have seen the worst and the best of the program. I can finally say that the women’s basketball program there is finally becoming something that past, present and future players can and well be proud of. As one of the few players that played for Coach Rick Reeves and the other three coaches before him I can honestly say that I am proud of the job he has done. In the year that I played for him and the year that I coached under him, the members of the team started to enjoy basketball again. Coach Reeves brought with him an amazing work ethic and a drive to be the best, which he was able to instill in his players. As a senior when he came to GardnerWebb I, along with my other teammates, finally enjoyed going to practice again. Basketball was once again the one thing that I loved to play more then anything else and the other coaches that I played for tried to take that away and turn it into a job. We almost won more games at Gardner-Webb during my senior year under the direction of Coach Reeves then we did all three years prior to that combined. It wasn’t because of the talent of the players but because of the drive and knowledge of our coach that made the year so much more successful. Not only has he brought the program from its lowest point to being contenders in the conference and knocking on the door to the NCAA tournament the last few years but the caliber of players that he has brought into Gardner-Webb has changed tremendously. Past coaches wanted the best players they could find, Coach Reeves brings the best players and people that he can find. He brings in girls that want to be there, that the team wants to have there and that makes the school as a whole a better place to be. The girls there now care about their grades and are there to get an education first and foremost, where that was not always a priority. The girls there now are also very talented on the court and have a drive and a passion that many past players didn’t have. I am very excited to see where Coach Reeves is able to take this program over the next few years and to see what new heights he and his team will reach. To know that while my team was not the most successful team that he has coached while being there, we did lay the foundation of what the team has become and where they will continue to go. I will forever be grateful and indebted to Coach Reeves for the things that he taught me on the court and off, about life and the person that I want to forever strive to be. Sincerely,
Sincerely, Crissy Guzman Brooke Wilkinson
