2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
For the second straight season, the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball team will have a lot of young faces on the roster, as 11 of the 15 student-athletes on the squad list are true sophomores and freshmen. Head Coach Rick Reeves’ squad will once again face another rebuilding year, as the 2012-13 team will have eight newcomers and a total of 11 players that have started less than 10 games at the intercollegiate level. Coming off a 4-25 season, in which the Runnin’ Bulldogs played the likes of North Carolina, Southern California, Duke and Louisville, the young team was thrown into the fire immediately and will look to use that experience heading into this season. With injuries to seniors Kim McKenney and Cierra Harris sidelining the two for the season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look for leadership from juniors Catrina Green, Jasmine Dale and Tabby Koerner, the lone returners from GWU’s championship season in 2010-11. Green and Dale, who led the team in scoring last season, will be asked to step up on both ends of the floor even more in the junior year. Joining Green, Dale and Koerner, along with the eight newcomers, are second-year players Jessica Heilig, Mayhana Dunovant and Chariah Harris. All three will have looked to have grown from their hardships in their first season at GWU last season and use that experience heading into 2012-13.
GUARDS The Runnin’ Bulldogs return only two players from a season ago at the guard spot in Dale and Dunovant. While both will see significant time on the court, a handful of newcomers will also be competing for playing time throughout the season. The point guard spot is the biggest question mark of the season, as the lone returner at the position is the sophomore Dunovant. While Dunovant played in all 29 games last season, she only split time at the position, and yet will be asked
4
this year to run the offense for Coach Reeves and his staff. However, Dunovant has battled a handful of nagging injuries throughout the offseason and preseason and hopes to be 100 percent come early November. With Dunovant at the point guard position is newcomers Lana Doran and Doreen Richardson. Doran, a 5-9 freshman from London, England, is a versatile player that has a lot of International experience that will aid her in running the GWU offense. Richardson is a super-quick point guard that fits the mold of the point guards from GardnerWebb University and will look to former All-Conference performer and first-year assistant coach Dominique Hudson for guidance on making the transition to the Division I level. At shooting guard, Dale is slated to be the starter, as the junior returns after averaging 9.3 points per game last season. Dale, who is GWU’s best outside shooting threat, will look to improve on last year’s 30.5 percent shooting from behind the three-point line, while also transitioning to more of a leadership roll this season.
Depending on the point guard position, both Doran and Richardson will see time at the off-guard position, as both players are capable of scoring in different ways with the ball, while fellow newcomer Monica Compton will provide depth off the bench for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. FORWARDS The small forward position is perhaps the deepest position for the Runnin’ Bulldogs this season, headlined by Heilig and newcomers Candace Brown and Savannah Douglass. Heilig will transition from the power forward spot to her more natural position at small forward this season. The 6-1 sophomore, who played against much taller competition at the four spot all season long last year, started 24 contests last season and averaged 5.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a true freshman. Brown, who led the national in scoring last season at 36 points per game at Summer’s County High School in West Virginia, will see playing time at both the shooting guard and small forward position. The 5-8 freshman brings a scoring mentality to the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ line up, as the McDonald’s All-American honorable mention can score from both the outside and off the dribble with both hands. Douglass, another freshman from Buckhead, Ga., will compete for immediate playing time at the forward spot. Douglass, who is recovering from an ACL tear last season, is a very athletic 6-0 player that is both quick and long and can play multiple positions for Coach Reeves and his squad. Koerner is slated to be the starter for the Runnin’ Bulldogs at the power forward spot, as the junior as added size to her frame and has worked on her inside game consistently throughout the offseason. The 6-0 forward will be asked to step up and increase both her points and rebounding numbers, as she sees an increase in minutes on the court this
2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
season. Behind Koerner is newcomer Olivia Parker, who will see a lot of minutes this season as the true freshman as shown a lot of promise throughout the preseason. Sophomore Chariah Harris will once again be looked upon to provide depth and instant energy off the bench for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as she did last season, while Heilig could also see time at the power forward spot as well. CENTER The starting center will be Green, as the junior, who has made 43 starts over her first two years at GWU, is looking to have a breakout year in 2012-13. The 6-2 center, who is in the best shape of her career heading into the season, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs last year with 11.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. However, like Dale, Green will be asked to take on more of a leadership role, both on and off the court, this year as one of only three active upperclassmen on the roster. While Koerner will also see time at the center position, depth in the middle will come from a duo of newcomers in Alicia Quinn and Tierney Twing. Quinn has had a strong preseason and is quickly learning the Gardner-Webb offensive and defensive systems, while Twing, who has battled an injury for most of the preseason, brings not only size to the middle for GWU at 6-5, but is also a strong rebounder and solid defender in the paint. SCHEDULE In 2012-13 the Runnin’ Bulldogs have concentrated on playing a lot of regional foes as well as home games, as GardnerWebb is slated to suit up in front of its home crowd 16 different times in Paul Porter Arena this season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will tip-off the season with three straight home games over a six-day period, as Coach Reeves’ and his squad will host Lipscomb in the season opener on Friday, November 9th,
and will then turn around to welcome both Tennessee Temple, November 12th, and Montreat, November 14th, to Paul Porter Arena and Boiling Springs, N.C. Gardner-Webb will then hit the road for its next two contests, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will play back-to-back Southern Conference foes in UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State. GWU will take on the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Saturday, November 17th, before heading up to Boone, N.C. to face off with Appalachian State on November 20th. GWU will return home for a fourgame home stand to wrap up November and kick-off the month of December, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs are slated to host Asbury on Saturday, November 24th, to tip-off the longest home stand of the year. After a seven-day hiatus, GardnerWebb will return to game action to open up Big South Conference play at home on Saturday, December 1st, before hosting back-to-back non-conference contests versus Longwood on December 9th and Davidson on December 13th. Gardner-Webb’s third road game of the season will once again come against another Southern Conference opponent, as GWU will travel down to Spartanburg, S.C. to do battle with the Wofford College
Terriers over the Christmas Break on Wednesday, December 19th. A home contest against N.C. Central on Saturday, December 22nd, and a road bout at Kennesaw State on Friday, December 28th, will wrap up the slate for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in the 2012 calendar year. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will tip-off the New Year with a Big South Conference road contest at Longwood on January 3rd and at High Point on Saturday, January 5th. Three straight conference contests follow, as Gardner-Webb returns home to host Campbell on January 7th, then Radford on January10th, and finally Winthrop on January 12th in Paul Porter Arena. Big South Conference play continues for the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the road, as GWU will take on UNC Asheville on January 19th, Presbyterian on January 24th, and then wraps up at Charleston Southern on January 26th. Five of the final nine games of the season will come at home for Coach Reeves’ and his squad, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs are slated to host return contests from UNC Asheville on January 31st, versus Presbyterian on February 7th, and against Charleston Southern on February 9th, before hitting the road to take on Campbell on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, and at Coastal Carolina on February 16th in Conway, S.C. The final two home contests of the year will come in late February, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will host High Point on February 21st and Liberty two days later on February 23rd for the two teams’ only match up of the season. Gardner-Webb will wrap up the 201213 regular season slate with road bouts at Winthrop on February 28th and at Radford on March 2nd, before setting its sights on the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach. com Big South Women’s Basketball Championship which will be held on March 6-10th in Conway, S.C. at the newly constructed HTC Center.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE History
Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 16 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s soccer for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, begins play this season with eight members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 29-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in
6
football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last eight years -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. This past season, the Big South had a record 41 student-athletes earn AllAmerica distinction, while another 10 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also won its first football playoff game (Stony Brook), had the national women’s basketball Rookie Coach of the Year, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade (Coastal Carolina, Liberty), and had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference in 2011-12. In addition, Liberty was the first men’s golf team in Conference history to win an NCAA Regional, and the Flames went on to finish 10th at the national event. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won six PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.

Rick Reeves Ninth Season at GWU
HC
* GWU all-time wins leader in women’s basketball history. * Four-time Big South Coach of the Year. Head Coach Rick Reeves, a four time Big South Coach of the Year, is in his ninth season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb University Runnin’ Bulldog basketball program. Reeves came to Boiling Springs after spending five seasons as the head women’s coach at Southern Miss. Reeves, who has a tremendous history of rebuilding Division I programs during his 26 years of collegiate coaching, has taken his teams to the postseason six times at the Division I level - including taking GWU to its first-ever NCAA postseason appearance in 2010-11, the WNIT in 200910, Southern Miss to the WNIT and threestraight trips to the NCAA Tournament at Liberty University (1997-1999). Over the last six seasons, Reeves has arguably done his best coaching jobs, as GWU has continued to shatter records and construct a winning tradition on a yearly basis. The 2011-12 Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season was one of rebuilding, as the women’s basketball team had eight freshmen and nine newcomers on the roster, which included only six returners from the 2011 Big South Championship Team. GWU, which lost their top-five scorers and over 84 percent of their scoring from the previous season, averaged only 50.8 points per game and finished the season at 4-25 overall and 3-15 in conference play. While their 3-15 conference record placed them in a tie with UNC Asheville for the eighth and final spot in the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament,
34
the Asheville Bulldogs held the tiebreaker which forced the Runnin’ Bulldogs out of the tournament. Throughout the season the Runnin’ Bulldogs showed glimpses of what is to come, as GWU’s young squad posted a number of game-high marks on the year. Twice GWU posted a team-high 62.5 percent three-point percentage in a game, which ranked fifth overall in their Division I history, while their 32 made free throws against Coastal Carolina on January 9th ranked as the second most made free throws by a GWU team in a single game in the program’s 12-year DI history. In 2011-12, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season average of 9.1 steals per game ranked fifth all-time in their single-season Division I history, while four different players posted top-five marks in GWU’s Division I game-highs record book during the season in areas such as most threepointers made in a game, most free throws made in a game, highest free throw percentage in a game, most offensive rebounds in a game, most defensive rebounds in a game and most blocked shots in a game. Sophomore center Catrina Green, who was named to the College Sports Madness Big South All-Conference Second-Team, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in both scoring and rebounding at 11.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The sophomore from Greensboro, N.C. posted a teamhigh 48 blocks, which placed her in a tie with Brittany Harmon (2003-04) for the most blocks in a single season in GWU’s Division I history, while her 128 offensive
rebounds ranked as the second most offensive boards by a GWU player in a single season in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Division I history. Senior Brianna Dillard, who was named the Big South Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team for the second straight season, led the team with 61 steals on the year, which ranked fourth for the most steals by a single player in a single season in GWU’s Division I history. Despite the tough losses, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to grow from the experiences of the 2011-12 season, which included four games against top-25 preseason teams in North Carolina, Duke, Southern California and Louisville, as well as road games at Davidson, Lipscomb and Longwood on top of a very challenging Big South Conference slate. On November 11, 2010, Coach Reeves became the women’s basketball all-time career wins leader with his 98th win at GWU, which he followed up only two games later with his 100th career win while at GWU on December 5, 2010. The 2010-11 season saw yet another firsts, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs won its first ever conference championship tournament and qualified for its first ever trip to the Women’s Basketball NCAA Championship Tournament. GWU posted a 23-11 overall record in 2010-11, posting back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in the program’s 36-year history. The 2010-11 team defeated the No. 1 seeded Liberty Lady Flames 67-66 to win its first-ever Big South

Conference Championship Tournament and advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament. As a No. 14 seed, GWU squared off with the 2011 Co-ACC Regular Season Champions and the No. 3 seeded Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Miami 80-62 in Charlottesville, Va. The 23 wins was the second most wins by a GWU team in its NCAA Division I history, and tied for the second-most wins in a single season in the program’s 36-year history. GWU saw two players in Monique and Dominique Hudson each surpass the 1,000 career points mark, while as a team, set season-highs in lowest opponents scoring average (57.0 ppg) and in most field goals made (813). The 2010-11 Runnin’ Bulldogs team finished second in season-highs in winning percentage (.676) and was third in steals (10.1), assists (14.4) and most three-pointers made (161) as a team on the year. Seniors Monique and Dominique Hudson wrapped up their careers in record style in 2010-11, as Dominique, who was named to the Big South All-Conference First-Team, finished her career ranked first in GWU’s DI history in games played (129), minutes played (3,545), points scored (1,407), free throws made (419), assists (579) and in steals (244). Monique, who was tabbed as a Second-Team AllConference selection, finished third in three-pointers made (115), third in steals (210), fifth in points scored (1,147), fifth in free throws made (240) and fifth in assists
(265). Both Dominique and Monique were named to the Big South All-Tournament Team; with Dominique being tabbed the Tournament MVP, while both were also named to the NCCSIA All-State University Division Women’s Basketball Teams. Not to be overshadowed, fellow senior LaTroya Pope surpassed the 500 career rebounds mark and the 100 career blocks mark in 2010-11, moving up into fourth-place overall on GWU’s DI career rebounds list with 656 rebounds and second-place on the career blocked shots list with 125 blocks. Fellow senior Sandra Vaitkute, who battled an injury throughout the season, finished her career with 103 blocks, third in GWU’s DI history, and recorded a career field goal percentage mark of 48.6 percent, which ranks second in GWU’s DI history. Freshman center Catrina Green earned Big South All-Freshman Team honors in 2010-11, as she averaged 5.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while shooting a team-high 52.6 percent from the floor on the year. The 2009-10 Gardner-Webb’s women’s basketball season was one for the ages, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs shattered records, set new marks and put the program on a level that it had never reached before. Gardner-Webb went 28-5 overall and 15-1 in conference play to win the Big South Conference Regular Season Title, the program’s first regular season conference title in its 35-year history. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 28 wins set a new record for the most victories in a single season
by a GWU women’s basketball team in its history and ties the most wins for a Big South Conference team in the history of the Big South. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 28 win season marks the first time since 1995-96 that the women’s basketball team has had 20 or more wins and the most wins since the 1989-90 team posted 23 wins, while its season-high 16-game winning streak is the longest in the program’s NCAA Division I history. Gardner-Webb went a perfect 8-0 on the road in conference play and posted an overall record of 14-2 away from Paul Porter Arena, including wins at Purdue, at Liberty, at Coastal Carolina and at Charleston Southern, all firsts. The Runnin’ Bulldogs tallied a 14-2 record at home with the 14 home wins setting a new GWU record for a single season, while its 13 non-conference wins surpasses its previous record of 11 wins in its DI history. Gardner-Webb also received some national attention, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs received votes in the ESPN/USA Today Top-25 Coaches Poll 15 weeks out of the season, receiving as many as 15 votes on three different occasions. In 2009-10 senior Margaret Roundtree climbed into GWU history this season, as she became the 14th member of the 1,000 point club and became GWU’s Division I all-time leading scorer with 1,337 points in her career, which at the time placed her in sixth-place on GWU’s all-time career scoring list. Roundtree also finished her career as Gardner-Webb’s Division I leader in made field goals with 534 career made

field goals. Gardner-Webb’s Roundtree was named the Big South Player of the Year, while head coach Rick Reeves was tabbed the Big South Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career and his first at GWU. Dominique Hudson joined Roundtree on the First-Team All-Conference Team, as both were also named to the All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year. Junior guard Courtney Epps earned a spot on the Second-Team All-Conference Team, while senior Meranda Burnett was named to the Academic All-Conference Team. With the great season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs won the program’s 400th game, while Coach Reeves moved to third-place in the Big South Conference Wins list. In 2008-09, the Runnin’ Bulldogs at the time set a new bar for women’s basketball at Gardner-Webb in only its first year as members of the Big South Conference. Coach Reeves’ squad, which did not have a single senior on the roster, advanced all the way to the Big South Championship title game in only its first year in the League. The 2008-09 season was a special one for not only Coach Reeves, but for the Runnin’ Bulldogs women’s basketball program in a number of different ways. The 17 wins at the time was the most wins in one season that the women’s basketball program had totaled since moving to the NCAA Division I in 2000-01. Gardner-Webb won 11 home games, the most home wins in one season since moving to the NCAA Division I, and posted a nine-game home winning streak, the longest in the program’s history. The historical 2008-09 season doesn’t stop there, as in the Runnin’ Bulldogs first home game of the season GWU recorded the program’s largest margin of victory in the 48-point win over UVA-Wise and broke three school records in the process. GWU won its first-ever Big South Conference game on January 17, defeating Charleston Southern 60-50 at home. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also posted its first-ever win over Charleston Southern (Jan. 17) and first-
36
ever Division I win over Presbyterian (Jan. 26). In 2008-09 Gardner-Webb posted an 8-5 non-conference record, the first time that a GWU team had posted a winning non-conference record since moving to NCAA Division I. The eight non-conference wins were the most nonconference wins in Division I history at the time. GWU’s road win over Winthrop on February 23, was the largest come from behind victory in its history, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs erased a 15 point second half deficit to win 65-62. Individual history was made in 2008-09, as Head Coach Rick Reeves’ recorded his 70th career Big South Conference win with the win over UNC Asheville on February 16. Junior Margaret Roundtree surpassed the 500-rebound plateau in the same game, a win over UNC Asheville, becoming only the fourth player to surpass 500 rebounds in GWU’s Division I history. During the 2007-2008 year, Reeves had one of the youngest Division I programs in the NCAA - having just one senior while everyone else was a freshman or sophomore. However, Reeves led the young Runnin’ Bulldogs to their highest seed ever in the A-Sun Championship - a No. 3. seed. Reeves guided the team to a .500 mark in league play while also amassing a then school-record six consecutive wins during the year. Despite a tough non-conference slate, Reeves managed to produce the most wins in the Division I era prior to the start of the conference schedule. Yet perhaps his best coaching job at GWU was during the 2006-2007 season. Picked to finish second in the league in the preseason poll, the squad lost two starters and its sixth man. However, Reeves guided the team to a 10-8 A-Sun mark, earning the No. 4 seed in the tournament where the team advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also posted their best home record in Division I history at that time, garnering a 10-2 mark in Paul Porter Arena. On Feb. 15, a 61-47 victory over Stetson provided Reeves with his 300th career win.

During his second season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Reeves guided his team to a 14-win season, bettering his first-year record at Gardner-Webb by five wins. By finishing 11-9 in conference play, the Runnin’ Bulldogs earned a No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. After knocking off Campbell in the quarterfinals, Reeves led his team past No. 1 seed Belmont in the semifinals before falling to the No. 2 seed in the championship game. In his first year as the head coach at Gardner-Webb, Reeves guided his squad to a nine-win season; a mark that proved to be four wins more than GWU posted in each of the previous two seasons. Under his tutelage, the Runnin’ Bulldogs have shown steady improvement as a team as well as on an individual basis. Heading into the 2005-06 campaign senior Sequenta Blackman and junior Shameka Smith were voted onto the preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team. It marked the first time that a GWU player had been selected for such a preseason honor. The two were also the only set of teammates to make the list. That feat was repeated once more in 2009-10, as GWU teammates Margaret Roundtree and Dominique Hudson were each voted onto the Big South Preseason All-Conference Team, making it the second time in GWU’s women’s basketball Division I history that two Runnin’ Bulldog student-athletes have received preseason all-conference recognition in the same season. Off the court, the Runnin’ Bulldogs work just as hard as they did on the court. Reeves and his staff placed six studentathletes on the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team after his first year, 11 on the team during the 2005-06 season and six in 2007-08. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also had redshirt-junior Laura Povilonyte earn a spot on the Big South Conference All-Academic Team in 2008-09 and had eight others named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. In 2009-10 Meranda Burnett was named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team, while six total Runnin’ Bulldogs were named to the Big South Presidential
Honor Roll. 2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2011-12 SEASON REVIEW
The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season was one of rebuilding, as the women’s basketball team had eight freshmen and nine newcomers on the roster, which included only six returners from last year’s 2011 Big South Championship Team. GWU, which lost their top-five scorers and over 84 percent of their scoring from a year ago, averaged only 50.8 points per game and finished the season at 4-25 overall and 3-15 in conference play. While their 3-15 conference record placed them in a tie with UNC Asheville for the eighth and final spot in the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, the Asheville Bulldogs held the tiebreaker which forced the Runnin’ Bulldogs out of the tournament. The last time that the Runnin’ Bulldogs did not make the postseason conference tournament was back in 2004-05, head coach Rick Reeves’ first season at GWU, while this season also marked the first time that Gardner-Webb did not play in the Big South Championship game since joining the Big South in 2008. Throughout the season the Runnin’ Bulldogs showed glimpses of what is to come, as GWU’s young squad posted a number of game-high marks on the year. Twice GWU posted a team
44
high 62.5 percent three-point percentage in a game, which ranks fifth overall in their Division I history, while their 32 made free throws against Coastal Carolina on January 9th ranks as the second most made free throws by a GWU team in a single game in the program’s 12-year DI history. In 2011-12, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season average of 9.1 steals per game ranks fifth all-time in their single-season Division I history, while four different players posted top-five marks in GWU’s Division I game-highs record book during the season in areas such as most three-pointers made in a game, most free throws made in a game, highest free throw percentage in a game, most offensive rebounds in a game, most defensive rebounds in a game and most blocked shots in a game.
Sophomore center Catrina Green, who was named to the College Sports Madness Big South All-Conference SecondTeam, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in both scoring and rebounding at 11.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The sophomore from Greensboro, N.C. posted a teamhigh 48 blocks, which placed her in a tie with Brittany Harmon (2003-04) for the most blocks in a single season in GWU’s Division I history, while her 128 offensive rebounds ranks as the second most offensive boards by a GWU player in a single season in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Division I history. The starting center for the Runnin’ Bulldogs all season long led GWU in scoring in 16 different contests and rebounding in 18 different games, posting 10 double-doubles on the season. Green poured in a career-high 22 points in the loss at Asheville and hauled in a careerhigh 16 rebounds twice on the year. Senior Brianna Dillard, who was named the Big South CoScholar Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team for the second straight season, led the team with 61 steals on the year, which ranks fourth for the most steals by a single player in a single season in GWU’s Division I history. Dillard, who also led the team in assists with 59 on the season, was third on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game and fourth in scoring
2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2011-12 SEASON REVIEW
with 5.9 points per game. Dillard posted a season-high 17 points in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ overtime win at Radford and hauled in a careerhigh 13 rebounds in the loss at Longwood. Despite the tough losses, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to grow from this year’s experiences, which included four games against top-25 preseason teams in North Carolina, Duke, Southern California and Louisville, as well as road games at Davidson, Lipscomb and Longwood on top of a very challenging Big South Conference slate. Gardner-Webb opened up their very tough 2011-12 schedule with a loss at #19 North Carolina on November 12th. The loss spearheaded a series of losses for GWU, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs suffered back-to-back home losses to Kennesaw State and Appalachian State, before falling on the road at Davidson to fall to 0-4 before the Thanksgiving break. Over the Thanksgiving break, GWU traveled to the Bahamas where the Runnin’ Bulldogs competed at the 2011 Junkanoo Jam. There, head coach Rick Reeves’ squad fell to #6 Duke and the Pac-12’s Southern California, dropping to 0-6 to start the season. After a tough home loss to Wofford and back-to-back road losses at #13 Louisville and former Atlantic Sun foe Lipscomb, the Runnin’ Bulldogs returned after Christmas break to post a 56-
45 road win over North Carolina Central on December 28th, their first win of the season. In their very next contest, the Runnin’ Bulldogs opened up conference play at Campbell University, which was a battle from start to finish. Despite their effort, the Runnin’ Bulldogs fell to the Fighting Camels, 62-52, and thus started their conference slate with a loss. GWU’s conference struggles continued, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs dropped back-to-back Big South contests at High Point and at home versus Charleston Southern to fall to 0-3 in conference play. Refusing to throw in the white towel, Gardner-Webb bounced back to defeat Coastal Carolina at home, 73-63, on January 9th, to record their first Big South
Conference win of the season. However, the Runnin’ Bulldogs would drop their next nine games, all of which came in Big South play, including a 59-57 overtime loss at home to Presbyterian, to fall to 2-21 overall and 1-11 in conference play. The Runnin’ Bulldogs snapped the losing streak with a home win over UNC Asheville, 69-52, on February 18th, yet suffered losses to both Longwood and Liberty the following week. In GWU’s final road game of the season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs held off the Radford Highlanders for a 59-55 overtime win in Radford, Va., on February 27th to place them in a tie with the Asheville Bulldogs. In need of a win to help secure themselves a place in the 2012 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, the Runnin’ Bulldogs came up just short, suffering a 66-46 home loss to High Point and a 64-51 home loss to Campbell to end their season. While Dillard and fellow senior Breynna Winkler will be gone next season due to graduation, the future looks bright for a young Runnin’ Bulldog squad that is set to return four starters and 13 total players that all saw important playing time this season, gaining valuable experience which head coach Rick Reeves and his squad hopes will carry over into next year.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HISTORY GARDNER-WEBB 1,000 CAREER POINTS CLUB
1,000 POINT CLUB
Throughout Gardner-Webb’s illustrious history, 16 women have reached a milestone that not many do - scoring 1,000 career points. Teammates Susan Bolt Briggs and Carolyn Dewberry were the first to score 1,000 points during their time in Boiling Springs. From 19881992, Fredia Lawrence lit up the scoreboard, setting the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ all-time scoring record at 2,201 points. Since the move to NCAA Division I, Margaret Roundtree netted the most points for GWU, tallying 1,337 in her stellar career. Under head coach Rick Reeves, five players have joined the 1,000 point club. Sequenta Blackman tallied over 1,000 points for her career. Blackman, who graduated in May 2006, finished her career as the 11th-most productive scorer in Runnin’ Bulldogs’ history with 1,195 points. On Jan. 25, 2007, senior Shameka Smith netted her 1,000th career point. The Bessemer City, N.C., native finished with 1,136 points, which at the time was good enough for 12th on the GWU all-time list. In the 2009-10 season, Gardner-Webb’s Margaret Roundtree scored her 1,000 point en route to finishing her career with 1,337 points, placing her in sixth-place all-time and surpassing Casey Collins as the Runnin’ Bulldogs Division I career scoring leader. On November 22, 2010, Dominique Hudson became the 15th member of the 1,000 point club, scoring points 999 and 1,000 on back-to-back made free throws. Only months later on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, Monique Hudson tallied her 1,000 career point, becoming only the 16th player in GWU history to accomplish that feat. With both Dominique and Monique Hudson both scoring 1,000 career points, the duo became only the fifth set of siblings to both score over 1,000 career points in Big South history and only the second set to do it in the same season.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LYCC/PAUL PORTER ARENA
The home of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 3,500-seat Paul Porter Arena is one of the most intimidating venues
in the Big South Conference - with fan support rattling the rafters regularly. Located inside the LutzYelton Convocation Center, Paul Porter Arena has seen the Runnin’ Bulldogs post 27 wins at home over the last three seasons, including a record 14 wins in 2009-10. Gardner-Webb’s home court advantage is helped tremendously by “The Dawg Pound,” which is a student group that provides plenty of noise and enthusiasm on game nights.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC TRAINING An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Education Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE 10 Principles of Performance Cornerstone: FAITH The cornerstone of any kind of true success begins with God. A man’s ability to seek and have a relationship with Him, guides his steps. 1. Attention to Detail * It is the mission of the athletic performance staff to carefully research, plan, and effectively execute every particular detail of training the student-athlete. 2. Testing and Evaluation * By looking at Anatomical Composition, Measurements, evaluating athletic skill, and goal setting. 3. Train Movements, not Muscles * Athletes. Not body builders. Athletic skill such as running, jumping, throwing, and shooting occur in different planes of motion, and all require proper neuromuscular recruiting patterns. * Terminology such as: push, pull, vertical, horizontal, transverse, linear, lateral are used when involving training. 4. Train Explosively * Utilizing appropriate training methods, student-athletes have the opportunity to take full advantage of their fast twitch potential. 5. Functional Mobility and Postural Control * Athletes are required to move their bodies and / or objects in a desired range of motion, while demonstrating coordination and control. * Flexibility, Range of Motion, and having a understanding of the relationship of anatomy while executing positions / movement patterns is essential. 6. Periodization and Variety * It is imperative that a successful training program utilize proper progression levels, periodized intensities, and volume design. * Exercises and drills must show variety to peak athlete interest, sustain performance levels, prevent overtraining, and cultivate competition. 7. Specificity * It is important to not only train the athlete in the movements required, but in the energy system required of the sport. 8. Diet and Recovery * Proper nutrition and rest help meet the energy demands of training. The body requires six separate types of nutrients in order to function at peak levels. It is important to consume a balance of these different types of foods to supply the necessary nutrients. 9. Attitude * You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do.” - A.J. Kitt 10. Develop Trusting Relationships * It is very difficult (if not impossible) to disrupt or break up a team whose foundation is built on trust, loyalty, and integrity.

2012-13 GWU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY
History
Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, GardnerWebb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education. In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly novel idea for its time. Today, Gardner-Webb’s GOAL classes are available at 16 centers across North Carolina. The institution officially became Gardner-Webb University in January 1993, and in 2001—four years shy of its centennial—the University began offering its first doctorate (Doctor of Ministry). Today, Gardner-Webb offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including four doctoral programs in ministry, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and as of 2012, nursing practice. In 2006, Dr. A. Frank Bonner was inaugurated as GardnerWebb’s 12th President, ushering in the University’s latest era of remarkable growth. Under Bonner’s leadership, Gardner-Webb has achieved record enrollments, built impressive new buildings like the newly opened Tucker Student Center, and earned national acclaim for academic quality and student achievement. Most important, though, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to the guiding and sustaining principles of faith, service, and leadership, and to preparing graduates for lives of lasting impact, “For God and Humanity.”
