The Bulldog Way What is the Bulldog Way? This is Gardner-Webb Wrestling’s plan on building our brand through four main character traits, Integrity, Faith, Discipline, and Intensity. By committing to these traits in all areas, we will be creating an environment where team members will be able to grow in all avenues of life. Our first step in implementing the plan will be to define each of our pillars. Integrity Integrity can be defined as simply stating, “who we are when nobody is looking.” Integrity can be much more complicated, as you look further into what integrity is. The word integrity comes from the Latin word “Integer” meaning whole or complete. This can be compared to an internal support system, and the stronger your support system, the harder it will be to bring you down. To be a person who is considered to have a high level of integrity, it is important that one has congruence between what you say and what you do. Character can fall under the umbrella of integrity and will be judged in how you carry yourself in all you do (practice, class, public, on the bus, etc). Discovering and defining one’s core values is vital in defining integrity as your self-identity molds who that you are. Faith Faith shows a commitment to something without any guarantee of an outcome. Actively knowing that the object of your faith exists, remaining obedient to the principles of that central focus and being continuously desirous of maintaining that presence in your life no matter what state your current life is. Having a strong faith can cover areas of one’s life. Having a spiritual faith in Jesus Christ as our savior. Having faith in your teammates. Having faith in your coaches/bosses/leaders. Having faith in a system. Having faith in yourself. Life is full of question marks and there is no way to predict what our results are going to be. By committing to the processes and believing in what you are doing, you will get the most out of your journey. Discipline Discipline goes hand in hand with Faith, as it can be defined as a set of practices or guidelines that will direct you toward your goal. Discipline is a concerted, focused effort often involving sacrifice, dedication of resources and risk, which is directed toward accomplishment of your goal. One must train his mental, moral, and physical abilities as he develops his self-discipline. Discipline is a trait that forces one to make a decision to take action to follow through with a plan. Not taking action is a decision just as taking action is. Self-discipline is what drives us to continually stay on our faith’s path. Intensity Intensity is a mental focus that we must bring to the table in all that we do. By channeling a high degree of emotional excitement toward the task at hand, one can direct all focus toward the goal.

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
GARDNER-WEBB WRESTLING 2012-13 Season preview
A new, but familiar face will be in charge of the Gardner-Webb wrestling program in 2012-13, as long time assistant and associate head coach Daniel Elliott has taken over the reigns as head coach following the retirement of Dick Wince who had been on the bench for the previous 22 years. Elliott, who is a 2006 graduate of Gardner-Webb University, has been a part of the Runnin’ Bulldog wrestling program since stepping on campus as a freshman in 2001. Coach Elliott takes over a team in 2012-13 that is a mixture of young and old, recent and new, experienced and inexperienced, as the top-six grapplers over the last two seasons return and are joined by 14 newcomers, all of which are true freshman. Returning for the Runnin’ Bulldogs are redshirtseniors Justin Guthrie, Alex Medved, Ryan Medved, Travis Porter and Blake Salyer, who will all be looked upon to not only have strong seasons at their respective weight classes, but also to mentor the newcomers as Gardner-Webb enters its second season as an associate member of the Southern Conference. In the lower weight classes, 125, 133 and 141, Coach Elliott’s line up will include a handful of freshmen looking to compete for mat time right away. The 125-pound position is up for grabs, as a trio of newcomers in Tyler Ziegler, Cortez Starkes, and Alex White will battle for starts all season long.
Ryan Medved
4
GOLDE At 133 pounds, redshirt-sophomore Robbie Golde, who made 23 starts last season, will be the favorite, while both Ziegler and White will be looked upon to provide depth at the position. Sophomore Davante Andujar will once again suit up for the Runnin’ Bulldogs at 141 pounds, as last year as a freshman he started the year off at 141, but was bumped up to 149 due to an injury to Ryan Medved early in the season. Andujar, who posted 11 wins last year as a true freshman, will be pushed this season at 141 pounds by freshman Ryan Mosley and redshirt-freshman Travis Fulk. At the middleweight classes, 149, 157 and 165, there will be three familiar faces in Ryan Medved, Alex Medved and Guthrie. Ryan Medved returns to the 149-pound class after suffering a season-ending knee injury early last season, while his twin brother, Alex, will get the start at 157 pounds where last season he posted 18 wins overall. Guthrie, who was named to the Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference Team this season, will once again compete at 165 pounds where last year he led the team with 18 wins, posting 19 wins overall on the year. Depth at the middleweight positions will come from redshirt-freshmen Josh Burns and Matt Kowalski, as well as newcomers Austin Trott, Kyle Ash and Justin Stanley.

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
2012-13 Season preview While junior Erin O’Dell, who lined up for GWU most of the season last year at 174 pounds, attends to redshirt this season, the upper weight classes of 174, 184 and 197 are perhaps the deepest positions for Coach Elliott and his squad this season. Redshirt-sophomore Aaron Rabin and sophomore Julian Ming return this season, as both competed at 174 and 184 pounds last season for GWU. Coach Elliott also added newcomers Hunter Gamble, Gray Jones, Joseph Evans and Jake Terrell who will compete for time on the mat immediate at all three spots. Returning to the lineup this season after sitting out last year is Salyer who will compete at either 184 or 197 pounds this season. Salyer, who is perhaps one of the most experienced wrestlers on the entire roster this season, will not only be pushed, but will also be asked to guide and mentor freshman newcomer Boyce Cornwell. Moving up from 197 pounds to the heavyweight position is Porter, as the redshirt-senior is coming off a season in which he posted 15 wins overall. Behind Porter at the heavyweight position is returning starter and sophomore Justin Kozera, who had 13 wins a year ago as a true freshman, and freshman Tony Mendez. Despite the youth at many positions, Coach Elliott, his staff and his team, have high ups in the 2012-13 season, which includes eight home contests on the year.

After starting the season at the Hokie Open in early November, GWU will return home to host both Virginia and George Mason at the Movember Duals on November 10th. GWU will remain at home to host Belmont Abbey in a dual match on November 19th, before hitting the road to compete at the Hoosier Duals (Dec. 1), at Appalachian State (Dec. 4), at the CSU Open (Dec. 15) and at the Brute Invitational (Dec. 29). The Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers will then kick-off the new calendar year with home bouts versus N.C. State (Jan. 12), Davidson (Jan. 22) and VMI (Jan. 25). After traveling to Campbell for a Southern Conference match on January 28th, Gardner-Webb again will return home to host Chattanooga (Feb. 1) and Duke (Feb. 5) in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ final two home matches of the year. On February 10th, GWU will take on The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio to compete in a tri-match with Cleveland State and Ohio on February 23rd. This year’s Southern Conference Wrestling Championship will be held on March 9th in Lexington, Va., as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will look for a strong showing in order to send some wrestlers to the 2013 NCAA Championships on March 21-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.

2012-13 COACHING STAFF
Daniel Elliott Head Coach First Year 7th Year Overall Daniel Elliott was named the Head Wrestling Coach at GardnerWebb University in July 2012. Elliott, who took over for former head coach Dick Wince who retired at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season after 22 years at Gardner-Webb University, has served as the Associate Head Coach for the last two seasons and has been on the GWU wrestling coaching staff since 2006. “Daniel came here as a student-athlete in 2001, and it has been a pleasure to watch him mature and grow into a coach worthy of this position in just over 10 years,” said Vice President for Athletics Chuck Burch. “His drive and enthusiasm will serve him well, as will his love for this University and wrestling program. “I am extremely excited about the opportunity to be the next head wrestling coach at Gardner-Webb University. It is a special feeling to be able to coach at one’s alma mater and I am truly thankful for the chance to continue to be a part of the development of this program,” commented Coach Elliott. Since moving over to the bench as a coach, Elliott has seen at least one GWU wrestler make it to the NCAA Championships in five of the last six years, including watching a record-tying four student-athletes qualify for nationals in 2010-11 and Dustin Porter who reached the NCAA Championships in each of the four years from 2007-10. Fellow GWU grappler Rob Tate reached the Championships in 2006-07, earning the Runnin’ Bulldogs lone victory at the national event that season. “The wrestling program has undergone several changes in the recent year ranging from our move into the Southern Conference to the current training facility. During my past few years as associate head coach, Coach Wince has given me the trust and guidance to take over several areas of the program,” added Coach Elliott. “I am excited to continue to grow as a coach and as a program. We will continue to work to bring quality people to Gardner-Webb who will buy into the goals of the wrestling program as we work to improve. This is a very vital time in a young person’s growth, and I look forward to helping our athletes grow into citizens that Gardner-Webb will be proud of.” In 2011-12, Elliott’s third as Associate Head Coach, the GardnerWebb wrestling program posted a 6-12 dual match record and a 2-5 record in conference dual match in their first year as an associate member of the Southern Conference. Battling injuries all season long, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were able to post a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship in March, scoring a team total of 21 points as three wrestlers placed in fourth-place or higher in their respective weight classes. However, for the first time in the program’s 12-year Division I history, the Runnin’ Bulldogs did not send a wrestler to the NCAA National Championships. In the program’s first ever postseason conference championship tournament, redshirt-junior Travis Porter, who suffered a fall in the True Second match at 197 pounds at the conference championship tournament, took third-place overall, while fellow teammates Alex Medved (157 pounds) and Justin Guthrie (165 pounds) each placed fourth in their weight classes.
22
GARDNER-WEBB WRESTLING Redshirt-juniors Alex Medved and Guthrie each posted 19 overall wins on the season to lead the team, while redshirt-senior Michael Slaughter finished his career out at GWU on a high note with 16 total combined wins at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Guthrie led the team with six pins on the season, while Alex Medved and freshman Scott Reilly, who wrestled unattached all season long and redshirted for GWU, each recorded four falls on the season. The future looks bright for the Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers, as freshmen Justin Kozera recorded 13 wins at 285 pounds on the season, while fellow newcomer Davante Andujar, who filled in at 149 pounds for most of the year due to an injury to Ryan Medved, tallied 11 total wins on the season. The 2010-11 season was yet another successful season on the mat, as Gardner-Webb had four student-athletes become East Regional Champions and qualify for the 2011 NCAA National Championships, the most that the Runnin’ Bulldogs have had in a single season since sending four grapplers to the nationals back in 2006. In the classroom, redshirt-sophomore Alex Medved was tabbed as a 2011 National Wrestling Coaches Association National Academic All-American, one of 92 student-athletes across the nation to receive this academic recognition. Redshirt-senior Jonathan Velazquez was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championships, as he helped lead GWU to a second-place overall team finish with a total of 74.5 points at the meet. Velazquez, along with Travis Porter and both Alex and Ryan Medved, were crowned East Regional Champions in their respective weight classes and qualified for the national championship tournament. In 2010-11, Gardner-Webb had four grapplers’ record over 20 wins on the season, while six wrestlers posted winning records on the year. As a team, GWU picked up wins over Anderson (S.C.) University, Belmont Abbey, Davidson and east regional foes Campbell, Millersville and Sacred Heart, while posted a 22-22 tie at home against Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference on January 21st. Elliott, who is in charge of the practice schedules and working with the student-athletes on the mat, has worked hard in raising money for the GWU Wrestling program and its new building. His fundraising efforts have allowed the Runnin’ Bulldog wrestling program to move into a new building for the 2010-11 season, which when fully renovated will be one of the nicest wrestling only facilities in all of NCAA Division I with offices, locker room, team room, bathrooms and a large practice area. During his career for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Elliott was a twotime NCAA Qualifier. He was also a two-time regional champion at 149 pounds. In his last regional meet, Elliott was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. He finished the regular season with a record of 39-2 during his senior campaign and was ranked 10th in the nation in the final standings. Elliott holds the school record for career wins, single-season wins in addition to consecutive wins. He also led the team in each of his last three seasons in takedowns. In the spring of 2008, Elliott competed in the USA Wrestling Northeast Regional and placed third in his weight class, marking the first time that he had placed at a senior-level event. Elliott graduated in May 2006 with a double major in History and Communications. Elliott then went on to earn his masters in Sports Science & Pedagogy from Gardner-Webb in the summer of 2008.

In his final season as the leader of the Gardner-Webb wrestling program, head coach Richard Wince looked to help lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs into a strong first season in the Southern Conference. After GWU kicked off the season with a 28-12 home win over Belmont Abbey in early November, the Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers’ competed at both the Hokie Open and the Citadel Open on November 6th, which was highlighted by Guthrie’s sixth-place finish at 165 pounds at the Hokie Open. Gardner-Webb returned to dual match action five days later, as the Runnin’ Bulldog wrestlers suffered a 40-3 loss to Chattanooga in their first-ever Southern Conference dual match in the program’s history. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then competed at three straight open tournaments, the Navy Classic, the Pembroke Classic and the Davidson Open, before returning to dual match action in early December. With a dual match record of 4-6 overall, the Runnin’ Bulldogs met up with VMI for a Southern Conference showdown on January 20th, in Lexington, Va. The Keydets held on for the 22-15 win to drop GWU to 1-3 in conference action and extend their winning streak to three straight bouts over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. After stepping out of dual match action for the 2012 Appalachian Open to wrap up the month of January, GWU returned home to host Campbell and Millersville on February 4th. The Runnin’ Bulldogs suffered their fourth conference loss of the season to the hands of Campbell, 17-16, as the Fighting Camels took the match win by way of a tiebreaker. Not deterred, Gardner-Webb dominated Millersville in the afternoon session, earning a 39-12 win to improve to
5-8 overall in dual match competition. After three straight losses at Duke and at home versus the Citadel and Indiana, Gardner-Webb won all but one match to defeat Davidson on the road, 36-3, on February 16th to put the Runnin’ Bulldogs at 5-11 overall with one match remaining. In their final regular season match of the year, and Coach Wince’s final home match of his 23 years at GWU, the Runnin’ Bulldogs battled the Ohio Bobcats tooth and nail, winning five of the 10 bouts on the night. However, in the other five wins for Ohio, four were falls and one was a major decision victory, giving the Bobcats the 2818 match win. With the dual match season over, the Runnin’ Bulldogs set their sights on the 2012 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship on March 3rd in Chattanooga, Tenn. GWU posted at least one win in six of the 10 weight classes and were led by redshirt-juniors Travis Porter, Alex Medved and Guthrie, who all recorded two wins apiece on the day. While there will be a new leader in charge next season with the retirement of Coach Wince, the future looks strong for the Runnin’ Bulldog wrestling program who will return eight starters from this past season and a large group of young grapplers who will push for mat time all season long.

GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC TRAINING
GARDNER-WEBB WRESTLING
An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Education Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of thirteen certified athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must challenge and pass the Board of Certification Exam to become Certified Athletic Trainers (AT). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with first-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen field of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

GARDNER-WEBB ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE
10 Principles of Performance Cornerstone: FAITH The cornerstone of any kind of true success begins with God. A man’s ability to seek and have a relationship with Him, guides his steps. 1. Attention to Detail * It is the mission of the athletic performance staff to carefully research, plan, and effectively execute every particular detail of training the student-athlete. 2. Testing and Evaluation * By looking at Anatomical Composition, Measurements, evaluating athletic skill, and goal setting. 3. Train Movements, not Muscles * Athletes. Not body builders. Athletic skill such as running, jumping, throwing, and shooting occur in different planes of motion, and all require proper neuromuscular recruiting patterns. * Terminology such as: push, pull, vertical, horizontal, transverse, linear, lateral are used when involving training. 4. Train Explosively * Utilizing appropriate training methods, student-athletes have the opportunity to take full advantage of their fast twitch potential. 5. Functional Mobility and Postural Control * Athletes are required to move their bodies and / or objects in a desired range of motion, while demonstrating coordination and control. * Flexibility, Range of Motion, and having a understanding of the relationship of anatomy while executing positions / movement patterns is essential. 6. Periodization and Variety * It is imperative that a successful training program utilize proper progression levels, periodized intensities, and volume design. * Exercises and drills must show variety to peak athlete interest, sustain performance levels, prevent overtraining, and cultivate competition. 7. Specificity * It is important to not only train the athlete in the movements required, but in the energy system required of the sport. 8. Diet and Recovery * Proper nutrition and rest help meet the energy demands of training. The body requires six separate types of nutrients in order to function at peak levels. It is important to consume a balance of these different types of foods to supply the necessary nutrients. 9. Attitude * You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do. - A.J. Kitt 10. Develop Trusting Relationships * It is very difficult (if not impossible) to disrupt or break up a team whose foundation is built on trust, loyalty, and integrity.

GARDNER-WEBB UNIVERSITY
History
Gardner-Webb’s journey from a boarding high school to a thriving regional University is marked by remarkable growth, great determination, and unyielding perseverance. In 1903, the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Baptist Associations conceived a vision of an institution of learning where young students would enjoy “the best possible educational advantages under distinctive Christian influence.” On December 2, 1905, the Boiling Springs High School, Gardner-Webb’s predecessor, was chartered. Even today, the University’s relationship with area churches is still strong. The institution was transformed into a junior college in 1928, and only survived the catastrophic Great Depression through God’s providential grace and the tireless efforts of numerous trustees and local champions of Christian education. Then in 1942, N.C. Governor and Shelby native O. Max Gardner began devoting time and energy toward strengthening and guiding the College. In recognition of his efforts, those of his wife, Fay Webb Gardner, and their families, the school’s name was changed to Gardner-Webb College. After World War II, the College experienced steady physical growth and academic development. New buildings sprang up, enrollments increased, and by the end of the 1960s, the College was ready to transition to a four-year institution. In 1971, Gardner-Webb earned its full accreditation as a senior college, and nine years later it began offering its first master’s degree in education.
In 1978, the College became an early pioneer of modern distance education by launching the groundbreaking Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) Program. The GOAL Program enabled working adults to take evening classes close to home and complete their bachelor’s degrees, a truly novel idea for its time. Today, Gardner-Webb’s GOAL classes are available at 16 centers across North Carolina. The institution officially became Gardner-Webb University in January 1993, and in 2001—four years shy of its centennial—the University began offering its first doctorate (Doctor of Ministry). Today, Gardner-Webb offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including four doctoral programs in ministry, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and as of 2012, nursing practice. In 2006, Dr. A. Frank Bonner was inaugurated as Gardner-Webb’s 12th President, ushering in the University’s latest era of remarkable growth. Under Bonner’s leadership, Gardner-Webb has achieved record enrollments, built impressive new buildings like the newly opened Tucker Student Center, and earned national acclaim for academic quality and student achievement. Most important, though, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to the guiding and sustaining principles of faith, service, and leadership, and to preparing graduates for lives of lasting impact, “For God and Humanity.”

Chuck Burch Vice President for Athletics 16th Year Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 16th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 31st year overall in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at GardnerWebb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-theboard improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last five academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted
GARDNER-WEBB ADMINISTRATION competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007. In 2009-10 the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program won their first-ever Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and made an appearance in their first-ever postseason appearance in the WNIT. The following year in 2010-11, the GWU women’s basketball team won the school’s second Big South Conference Championship, the first in women’s basketball, and punched their ticket to their first-ever NCAA National Championship Tournament. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
GARDNER-WEBB WRESTLING
THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which began its 92nd season of intercollegiate competition in 2012, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on Capital One Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.
